Abstract:
In recent years, geothermal energy use from low-temperature sandstone reservoirs has sharply increased. Nonetheless, the injection of heat-depleted geothermal fluids has not been an easy task because of well/formation damage and operational/economic issues. Sønderborg geothermal plant is a case example of heat-mining from a low-temperature reservoir. It is in the northeast of Sønderborg towards Augustenborg Fjord. The present work takes into consideration the regional and local geology of the Sønderborg area, construction of the wells, field experience and water chemistry. The main issues of the geothermal plant appear to be related to the construction of the wells and reinjection of the heat-depleted brine. Our water chemistry analysis and PHREEQC simulations indicate that geothermal brine was saturated with respect to carbonate and barite minerals. The excess of Ca2+ and SO42− ions could have led to the formation and precipitation of carbonate and sulfate scales. Moreover, the increment of iron concentration over time could suggest the ingress of oxygen and pitting corrosion due to the presence of halide ions.

Abstract:
ENCOUNTERS AND BOUNDARIES. INTERARTISTIC PROJECTS FOR THE CITY’S HARBOUR. A SØNDERBORG STORYIn the early 2000s, The Danish Arts Foundation strengthened a burgeoning interdisciplinary tendency in urban planning when it decided to fund strategic design projects for post-industrial Danish harbour cities. The present study delves into this process, which involved a specially composed team of seven members (architects, artists, and a scholar of cultural theory [the author of the present article]), as well as administrative and political institutions in Sønderborg, a historical city of 30,000 inhabitants in Southern Jutland, not far from Germany. Referring to French philosopher Michel de Certeau’s critical demonstration of a gap separating the urban planner from the very life of the city for which his plan or design is destined, the Arts Foundation team systematically attempted to reflect upon its own points of view as well as those of the citizens and society of Sønderborg. Notably, the design team explored the itineraries of everyday life as a basis for new urban spaces, architectural structures and pedestrian infrastructures, the aim being to reuse industrial urban elements of the early 20th century – elements that could easily be appropriated by the scale and practices of contemporary urban life. “Encountering the City’s Harbour”: these words summarise the concept underlying the urban design and development strategy proposed by the Arts Foundation team. A model comprising four levels – [1] studies from afar; [2] in situ explorations of the urban fabric; [3] elaboration of a key concept; [4] dialogues with urban users – systematises the collaborative efforts made from 2002 to 2005 and provides a practical answer to the structural challenge outlined by Certeau.

Abstract:
Energy systems in cities need to be decarbonized and are becoming more integrated via energy sector coupling. Today, cities often use simple methods to assess their low carbon targets, e.g., carbon calculators, and these methods use annualized carbon reduction potentials. For example, reductions from heat savings in buildings or fuel demand in transport. This is done because it is simple and fast. This paper describes a methodology that goes beyond carbon calculators and assesses highly renewable energy systems. The methodology is carried out for a case city—Sønderborg, Denmark. Using a national 100% renewable energy study and a suitable energy system analysis tool (EnergyPLAN), the method accounts for inter-sector coupling and energy system dynamics. The energy system is assessed by comparing the results from the analysis tool against numerous key sustainability factors for a Smart Energy System. The paper illustrates how the method delivers a sustainable 100% renewable Smart Energy System for Sønderborg, which can be part of the Danish energy system in 2050 based on local resources. The paper discusses the broader applicability of the method within strategic energy planning.

Abstract:

Lopes, Merwyn. "Feasibility study: Biogas in Sonderborg." Thesis, KTH, Industriell ekologi, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-33068.

Abstract:
The purpose of this feasibility study has been to guide decision makers in the implementation of abiogas project for the region of Sønderborg, Denmark. The project has been part of Feasibility studies envisioned in the Master Plan for Sønderborg to go carbon neutral by 2029. The study tried to evolve abest alternative for the city and gives a ready document to refer all aspects of biogas. The intensive industrial farming in Sønderborg needs to evolve to compare favorably with the situationin other regions of Denmark. The interests of various stakeholders in the waste cycle should be alignedwith that of farming. Interesting developments in the Bioenergy space hold promise for farmers to usetheir capacities for additional or alternative livelihood in energy. The focus to promote biogas as part ofDanish energy strategy and multiply capacity over the next 3 years has attracted numerous biogas proposals all over Denmark. This study had started off with identifying and estimating very obvious substrate sources. At verymoderate assumptions the value of methane in these sources has been estimated at 9 million m3. Thispotential could easily be increased if economically feasible substrates like energy crops and algae areadded. The SWOT analysis of pig farming in the region brings out the perspectives of farming direction in the near future. The 5 scenarios developed help the decision maker understand the various aspects thatneed to be carefully considered when planning the plant. The best case scenario for the city would bethe energy mosaic scenario which would integrate the high tech focus of local industry, a renewable energy source and a showcase project to make the region stand out among the other regions focused inthe climate change debate. The technological system analysis should help decision makers understand the stakeholders and the various dimensions in biogas that although complicated are manageable. The business case approach to identify utilization of energy and its costs gives a clear picture on the need for using the energy in CHP.The present focus by potential investors on government subsidies to calculate profitability needs to be understood in the context of other similar plants accepting present subsidy levels and the societal benefits, which unfortunately cannot be valued in money terms. At the center of all this is the need for proper stakeholder management within a bound timeframe asidentified by the “Create acceptance process”. The various tools and data are all present in this study, that only need to be arranged and presented by the company eventually handling the strict Projectmanagement goals of this project.
