Abstract:
In this study we examined the effect of the aqueous extract of Thonningia sanguinea (T.S.) on 7-ethoxyresorufin 0- deethylase (EROD, CYPlAl), 7-pentoxyresorufin-dealkylase (PROD, CYP2B1/2), 7-methoxyresorufin 0- demethylase (MROD, CYP1A2), aniline hydroxylase (aniline, CYP2E1), p-nitrophenol hydroxylase (PNPH, CYP2E1) and erythromycin N-demethylase (ERDM, CYP3A1) in rat liver in vitro and in vivo. Although T.S. extract increased ERDM activity in induced rat liver microsomes, it showed a dose-dependent inhibitory effectin vitro on other P450 monooxygenase activities particularly EROD and PROD, which are mediated primarily by CYPlAl and CYP2B1/2, respectively. PROD, EROD and MROD activities were also decreased by 18%, 19% and 40%, respectively, in hepatic microsomes prepared from rats treated with T.S. extract for 3 days. Kinetic analysis of CYP activity of 3-methylchloranthrene-induced microsomes demonstrated that T.S. inhibited EROD and MROD activities by a noncompetitive and competitive mechanism, respectively. The analysis of alterations produced by T.S. on PROD kinetic parameters in phenobarbital-induced microsomes suggested that the inhibition is noncompetitive. Pretreatment of rats with T.S. prolonged pentobarbital and phenobarbital sleeping time; however, plasma phenobarbital concentration determined on awakening showed no significant difference between control and T.S.-treated rats. T.S. was also found to be a potent inhibitor of the liver cytosolic glutathione S-transferase. These data suggest that selective modulation of CYP isoenzymes by T.S. might con-tribute to protection of the liver from xenobiotic-induced intoxication or to alteration of the action of drug (s) conco-mitantly administered besides its antioxidative properties.

Abstract:
We have calculated the total time of exposure to radiation on 25 patients undergoing scleroembolisation of spermatic veins. The aim of our study is to find the exact step in this procedure where we can act in order to shorten the total time of exposure. The procedure has been divided into 4 steps: V.R.: time for selective catheterisation of renal vein; V.S.: time for superselective catheterisation of the spermatic vein; T.S.: time for scleroembolisation; T.E.: total time of exposure. In our study the average time was 55’.2”, 53’.6” and 1’.24” for the V.R., V.S., and T.S., respectively The average time for the entire procedure was 3’.17”. As the effects of X-rays on spermatogenesis are well-known, we believe it is necessary to shorten as much as possible the total time of exposure to radiation.

Abstract:
The synapsins are a family of four neuron-specific phosphoproteins that have been implicated in the regulation of neurotransmitter release. Nevertheless, knock-out mice lacking synapsin Ia and Ib, family members that are major substrates for cAMP and Ca2+/ Calmodulin (CaM)-dependent protein kinases, show limited phenotypic changes when analyzed electrophysiologically (Rosahl, T.W., D. Here, using the optical tracer FM 1-43, we characterize the details of synaptic vesicle recycling at individual synaptic boutons in hippocampal cell cultures derived from mice lacking synapsin I or wild-type equivalents. These studies show that both the number of vesicles exocytosed during brief action potential trains and the total recycling vesicle pool are significantly reduced in the synapsin I-deficient mice, while the kinetics of endocytosis and synaptic vesicle repriming appear normal.

Abstract:
The expediency of development of theoretical and methodological bases of accounting and analytical support of the system of strategic management on the basis of use of T.S. Kuhn paradigmatic model of science development has been grounded. The peculiarities of the development of accounting science on the basis of the introduction of the concept of non-financial and integrated reporting in the current accounting practice have been considered. The difference between cumulative and non-cumulative approaches to the development of the system of scientific knowledge in accounting has been disclosed. The reasons for the expediency of using the paradigmatic concept of T.S. Kuhn to describe the process of development of the system of accounting scientific knowledge in the context of the development of the concept of strategic accounting communications have been determined. The basic concepts of the paradigmatic model of science development of T.S. Kuhn have been analyzed. The structure of the paradigm according to the approach of T.S. Kuhn has been revealed. The main phases of development of scientific knowledge according to T.S. Kuhn have been considered. Two groups of researchers' approaches, which use a paradigmatic model to analyze the peculiarities of the development of the system of accounting scientific knowledge have been allocated and characterized.

Abstract:
T.S. Eliot is an exceptional, unusual playwright. He fuses classicism and modernism in his plays and other literary works. However, this rare technique of making plays has been successfully used by him. He combines Greek myth and Christian rituals with contemporary issues, especially those relating to the masses or average citizens, in order to express his cultural ideals. Because of this special technique that is effectively wielded only by a few playwrights, T.S. Eliot included, he became an enigma for many literary historians. This paper thoroughly analyzes how T.S. Eliot uses both classicism and modernism in his plays, which is a rare but effective art of dramatization.

Gray, Will. "T.S. Eliot among the Metaphysicals." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3123.

Full text
Abstract:
Eliot's admiration for the poetry of the seventeenth century is well known. However, the several documents that explore the subject (thinly scattered across decades) fail to constitute a full account. Drawing on manuscript and print sources, and tracing particularly Eliot's prose poetics, this thesis redresses the scholarly need for a nuanced account of Eliot's role among the Metaphysical poets. The relationship ran in both directions, most famously in Eliot's championing of the poets and his urging that they find a new readership. His part in the revival of Metaphysical poetry, though, has been greatly exaggerated and the record is here faithfully adjusted. He was not in any way responsible for that revival, though he is its most important product, as is shown by a careful reconstruction of turn-of-the-century transcontinental publishing and reception. Eliot's criticism tells its own, largely unexplored story about the Metaphysicals and their influence on his critical and poetic sensibility. Most scholars, for instance, know that Eliot loved Donne, but few know the origin of that interest, let alone its brief nature or the personal reasons that drove him to appreciate the poet's audacity. Most also know the Modernist dicta of Tradition, objective correlative and the dissociation of sensibility, but not the fact that each owes something to Eliot's thinking about Donne. Engaging with Harvard class notes, under-consulted textbooks and a close study of Eliot's articles from the 1910s, two separate chapters investigate his education and early prose, along with their delicate dance between impersonality and confessional criticism. 1921-1926 marks a crucial stage in Eliot's writing, both for his poetry and his criticism. The Metaphysicals provide the clearest barometer of that change as well as the space where he approached conversion. This thesis is the first to trace the poets throughout Eliot's criticism, one of the first to engage with his Metaphysical-themed Clark Lectures, and the first to move far past Eliot's conversion, interpreting George Herbert as typical of his late mindset. In 1961 Eliot claimed no one had been as influenced by the Metaphysical poets as he had been. What this thesis offers is not only a more nuanced portrait of that influence but also a glimpse into the educational, critical and reading cultures of the early 1900s.

Bahbahani, A. "The invisible wagnerite : T.S. Eliot." Thesis, University of Sussex, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.264554.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is about aspects of Wagnerism in the works of T.S. Eliot, in terms of both influence and affinities. The opening chapter offers a brief historical background to Eliot's familiarity with and relation to Wagner, as well as an account of the principal issues to be discussed in the following chapters. The two artists' volumes of criticism mostly show in theory how they work in practice. One key theme there is the maintenance of the idea of tradition and at the same time that of revolutionizing the arts (poetry, opera and drama). Eliot's interest in music, notably in the use of the Wagnerian leitmotif, is one of the highlights of this study. Then, Eliot's concern for myths: his 'mythical method' is discussed in a separate chapter for comparison with Wagner's way of handling myths in his operas. Other important topics feature drama, the Greeks and Shakespeare, and poetry, especially Dante's, the Romantics' and that of the French Symbolists. Certain themes common in both (like salvation and love) are tackled in more than one chapter because of their relevance throughout, but a selection of motifs is singled out in a separate chapter. The study also investigates Eliot's and Wagner's relation to art and life from religious (Buddhism and Christianity) and philosophical (Schopenhauer and Nietzsche) paints of view. Where relevant, some biographical data shedding light on their arts are touched upon--e.g. their personal (including marital) experiences and their anti-Semitism. The concluding chapter rounds off the subject by mainly offering some possible reasons for Eliot's obscure and neglected Wagnerism.

Toda, K. "T.S. Eliot and Renaissance drama." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2015. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1463322/.

Full text
Abstract:
The crucial importance of non-Shakespearian Renaissance dramatists to T.S. Eliot is evident in both his poetry and his prose. Eliot himself drew attention to this: he credited his own ‘poetic formation’ to the ‘minor Elizabethan dramatists’, and when reviewing his ‘critical output for the last thirty-odd years’ in 1951, he confessed himself ‘surprised to find how constantly I have returned to the drama, whether by examining the work of the contemporaries of Shakespeare, or by reflecting on the possibilities of the future.’ As C.S. Lewis disapprovingly wrote, Eliot’s ‘sympathy with depraved poets (Marlowe, Jonson, Webster) is apparent’. This thesis will trace Eliot’s engagement with these dramatists; it is a topic that has been comparatively neglected despite the central role it played in the evolution of his poetic and critical sensibility. The first section, which is largely biographical, explores Eliot’s background and education for clues to the development of his great interest in Renaissance drama, as well as detailing the ways in which he pursued this interest when he moved to England. The second comprises a detailed study of Eliot’s many essays on Renaissance dramatists. The last section examines his poetry, from the juvenilia to The Waste Land of 1922, when the outward signs of his ‘saturation’ were particularly prominent. In my conclusion I discuss how his engagement with Renaissance drama evolved in his post-1922 poetry and culminated in the composition of his own verse plays. The aim of this thesis is to explore the nature of the ‘profound kinship’ Eliot shared with Renaissance dramatists; their work appealed to him because it combines erudition with emotion, refinement with savagery, levity with the macabre and squalid. This appeal was so strong that it powerfully shaped both his poetic ideals and his vision of modernity.

Asciuto, Nicoletta. "T.S. Eliot : turning darkness into light." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11007/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of light and dark imagery throughout T. S. Eliot’s literary career; in his poetry (Inventions of the March Hare, Prufrock and Other Observations, The Waste Land, Ash-Wednesday, Four Quartets) and in his dramatic works (The Rock, Murder in the Cathedral, The Family Reunion). The aim of this thesis is twofold. Firstly, it aims to show how, by an attentive analysis of light and dark imagery in Eliot’s works, it is possible to discern a continuous pattern of light and dark correlation and opposition throughout his oeuvre, which can be interpreted in historical, biographical, and existential terms. Secondly, this thesis seeks to explain poetry qua poetry, with the light and dark imagery proving a remarkable path of investigation, in which to understand Eliot’s poetry and its important relationship with his own literary “debts”. If, on the one hand, many critics have considered the importance of light and dark imagery in Eliot’s most significant poetical work after his religious conversion, Four Quartets, as an important turn to mysticism and religion, this has too often been perceived as a sudden change in his beliefs and in his poetics, rather than as a gradual development. The presence of light and dark images in Eliot’s early poetry, as well as in his earlier masterpiece The Waste Land, shows how Eliot had consciously imagined a path of light throughout his oeuvre, demonstrating his own preoccupations with regard to soul, rationality, and religion from his very early years as a poet. This thesis thus wants to fill a gap in the field of Eliot studies, where the importance of light and dark imagery in Eliot’s early poetry, as well as in his drama, and the connection of light and dark in Four Quartets with his other literary works, has been underestimated by previous scholars.

Micaković, Elizabeth Joan. "T.S. Eliot's voice : a cultural history." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18902.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a diachronic account of T. S. Eliot’s speaking voice, which, over fifty years, developed into the meticulously crafted tool of the twentieth-century author and critic and the politically and socially powerful instrument of the public intellectual. Eliot’s voice, although certainly the offspring of the nineteenth-century marriage of authorship as a bona fide profession and oral performance, was, however, unique in its responsiveness to twentieth-century legal and political debates on national identity and stability, copyright, and the powerful potential of recording technologies to both disseminate an author’s words almost exponentially whilst simultaneously encroaching on the traditional material of authorship: print. Indeed, what underpins this thesis is the argument that he was both fascinated by and actively involved in shaping those very discourses on the authority of the spoken voice in the belief that the power of the spoken word, and ultimately of his own voice, held an unrivalled ability to impact on social behaviour and national stability.

Abstract:

Instructional design/ designing training activities for adults is an activity that requires the anticipation of the steps that will be covered in the training process. This includes anticipating the objectives, content, methods, resources and assessment instruments in the context of a training activity. The analysis of the main instructional design models highlights a paradigm shift in the design training activities for the adults through a shift from product-centered design models (centered on the learning outcomes), to process-centered models (centered on the components of the training process) and mixed models (centered on the learning outcomes but also on the pedagogical conditions in which they occur). Based on this categorization, the paper covers the most common instructional models of design used in adult education: taxonomic models centered on the learning objectives - B. Bloom, L. Anderson, Krathwohl, E. J Simpson, T.S Baldwin, process-centered models - ADDIE model, Kemp model, mixed models –Merrill, Gagne and adaptive instruction models. The models of instructional design are covered in a critic but constructive manner, following their advantages and disadvantages and their possibilities for implementation. In the final part of the paper we address to the need of conceptualization of the concept of \\\"blended learning” and the need to develop a specific instructional design model in the light of the new perspectives and challenges that may appear. Blended learning is used to describe a solution that combines several different delivery methods or the learning that mixes various forms of organizing activities such as face-to-face classrooms, e-learning, and self-paced learning.

Abstract:
Abstract. Local ductility has become a useful and significant mechanical property of sheet metal, particularly for advanced-high-strength-steels (AHSS) [1, 2]. The widely accepted hole expansion test (HET) [3] has two problems: It mixes up the effects of shear cutting with the intrinsic material ductility, and the variance of test results is large. As a complementary approach, a workgroup consisting of universities, steel producers, automotive suppliers and OEMs have developed VDA-guideline 238-110 [4] for industrial application of the TTS (True Thickness Strain at fracture at minimum thickness) and TFS (True Fracture Strain from area reduction), to quantify local ductility based on the postmortem microscope analysis of the fracture surface of tensile test samples. In 18 laboratories, more than 1440 tensile tests have been performed on a sample batch of 3 AHSS grades (CR440Y780T-DH, CR780Y980T-CP, and HR660Y760T-CP). Using ASTM, JIS and ISO tensile specimens, each laboratory determined the conventional mechanical properties as well as TTS and TFS. For comparison HET were also performed. The measurement results were analyzed statistically in terms of gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GRR). Measurement variance for TTS is comparable to elongation at breakage and significantly lower than HET. TTS results clearly show superior local ductility of the -CP steels over -DH. An analysis of fracture morphology shows differences between the hot-rolled and cold-rolled -CP grades and a tendency for the -DH steel to fail at the edge. For -CP steels, TTS and TFS results are indistinguishable, for the -DH grade, the TFS value is slightly higher than TTS, likely a side-effect of higher global ductility.

Abstract:
Abstract Hybrid thermal management systems (TMS) enable faster response to rapid transient heat loads by supplementing heat rejection through a primary heat sink with temporary heat storage in a thermal energy storage (TES) device. The TES is not a passive component; it must be actively controlled by a realtime controller to decide when the TES should be discharged or recharged. While various types of controllers have been developed for hybrid TMS architectures, controllers for hybrid TMS in transient electronics cooling applications have predominantly been demonstrated in simulation environments. One such controller developed previously is a heuristic logic-based controller that leverages a state of charge (SOC) metric and feedback from several thermocouples placed in the fluid loop to manage the operation of the TES. In that prior work, the controller was demonstrated in simulation only; this paper builds on that work by implementing and validating the controller’s performance in an experimental single-phase hybrid TMS testbed. A particular advantage of this controller is its low level of computational complexity, facilitated by its rule-based architecture, which makes it more amenable for industrial use. We present an experimental case study to demonstrate the heuristic controller’s ability to meet two objectives: reduce the peak temperature at the surface of the cold plate below an allowable threshold and manage the SOC so the thermal storage capacity is not depleted.

Abstract:

Abstract:
