Abstract:

Abstract:
Microstructure and crystallographic texture play an important role in the sputtering target properties. The effect of asymmetric cross rolling (ACR) and deformation strain during ACR on texture homogeneity is not clear. Thus, high-purity tantalum (Ta) plates were ACR to 60% and 87% reduction in thickness. Texture of the rolled Ta sheets in the surface and center layer are characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD results indicate that ACR is effective to weaken the texture gradient existing in the as-received Ta plate. Besides, more homogeneous texture distribution along the thickness can be obtained with the increasing strain during ACR process.

Abstract:
The Auger@TA project is a combined effort involving members of both the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array experiment (TA) to cross-calibrate detectors and compare results on air showers detected at one location. We have recently reported results from Phase I of the project, during which we collected and presented data from two Auger water Cherenkov surface detector stations deployed into the TA experiment near the Central Laser Facility. For Phase II, we will deploy a micro-array of six or seven single-PMT Auger surface detector stations co-located with TA scintillator surface detector stations. The Auger micro-array will trigger and collect data independently from the TA allowing for a complete end-to-end comparison of detector data, calibration, and reconstructed event quantities on a shower-by-shower basis between the TA and Auger detector systems. We describe progress towards development of the micro-array for Phase II including the preparation of surface detector water tanks, station electronics, wireless communications, triggers, and data acquisition. We also outline plans for deploying the Auger@TA micro-array into the TA experiment in 2019 with preliminary estimates for coincident air-shower rates.

Abstract:
Sporangia of Phytophthora infestans from pure cultures on agar plates are typically used in lab studies, whereas sporangia from leaflet lesions drive natural infections and epidemics. Multiple assays were performed to determine if sporangia from these two sources are equivalent. Sporangia from plate cultures showed much lower rates of indirect germination and produced much less disease in field and moist-chamber tests. This difference in aggressiveness was observed whether the sporangia had been previously incubated at 4°C (to induce indirect germination) or at 21°C (to prevent indirect germination). Furthermore, lesions caused by sporangia from plates produced much less sporulation. RNA-Seq analysis revealed that thousands of the >17,000 P. infestans genes with a RPKM (reads per kilobase of exon model per million mapped reads) >1 were differentially expressed in sporangia obtained from plate cultures of two independent field isolates compared with sporangia of those isolates from leaflet lesions. Among the significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs), putative RxLR effectors were overrepresented, with almost half of the 355 effectors with RPKM >1 being up- or downregulated. DEGs of both isolates include nine flagellar-associated genes, and all were down-regulated in plate sporangia. Ten elicitin genes were also detected as DEGs in both isolates, and nine (including INF1) were up-regulated in plate sporangia. These results corroborate previous observations that sporangia produced from plates and leaflets sometimes yield different experimental results and suggest hypotheses for potential mechanisms. We caution that use of plate sporangia in assays may not always produce results reflective of natural infections and epidemics.

Abstract:
Pestalotiopsis species were most dominant endophytic species isolated from four medicinal plants including Terminalia arjuna , Terminalia chebula , Azadirachta indica , and Holarrhena antidysenterica . Thirty Pestalotiopsis species isolated from different parts of the medicinal plants were selected for the study. The antioxidant and antihypertensive properties of Pestalotiopsis isolates were determined by measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitory activity, lipid peroxidation, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition activity. Pestalotiopsis isolates of T. arjuna origin exhibited maximum radical scavenging activity compared with the others. The IC50 values of Pestalotiopsis extracts for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity ranged from 14 to 27 μg/mL compared with 15 and 6 μg/mL for butylated hydroxytoluene and ascorbic acid, respectively. The DNA damage study was also done for three isolates, TC-315, TA-37, and TA-60; TA-37 gave 80% protection. The IC50 values of Pestalotiopsis extracts for lipid peroxidation ranged between 30 and 35.5 μg/mL, while for the positive control butylated hydroxytoluene, it was 26 μg/mL. Out of 32 fungal extracts screened for antihypertensive assay, five (TA-37, TA-60, TA-102, TA-103, and TC-320) showed >60% inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme. The IC50 values for five extracts ranged from 21 to 37 μg/mL and was 20 μg/mL for captopril used as a positive control. The antibacterial activity was measured by the microplate-based turbidity measurement method. Four Pestalotiopsis extracts (TA-04, TA-37, TA-60, and TA-102) showed >75% inhibition against five bacterial strains including Bacillus subtilis , Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas fluorescens , Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. malvacearum, and Staphylococcus aureus . The antioxidant, antibacterial, and antihypertensive activities demonstrated the potential of Pestalotiopsis extracts as therapeutic targets.

Abstract:
Introduction: Edible and medicinal plants contain active principles that can act as antimutagens, and hence their intake may be useful for human cancer prevention. Green leafy vegetables are important sources of carotenoids which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimutagenic properties. Objective: To study the antimutagenic activity of oxycarotenoid-rich extracts isolated from Coriandrum sativum (coriander leaves) and Murraya koenigii (curry leaves). Methods: Oxycarotenoid-rich extracts isolated from Coriandrum sativum (coriander leaves) and Murraya koenigii (curry leaves) were investigated for antimutagenic activity in vitro by Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98 and TA 1535. Mutagens used were, nitro-o- phenylenediamine (NPD) (20μg/plate) and N-methyl- N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) (1μg/ plate). Results: The results revealed that oxycarotenoid-rich extracts isolated from Coriandrum sativum (coriander leaves) and Murraya koenigii (curry leaves) administered at doses of 1.0 mg, 2.5 mg and 5 mg per plate significantly inhibited mutagenicity induced by NPD and MNNG.Conclusion: These findings suggest that oxycarotenoid- rich extracts isolated from Coriandrum sativum (coriander leaves) and Murraya koenigii (curry leaves) have antimutagenic properties.

Abstract:
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the third most important grain legume cultivated in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In the present study Six crossing combinations were executed in chickpea comprising Chanoli and PKV Kabuli 4 as female parents and Virat, BDNGK-798 and WR- 315 as resistant male parents. Total 54 markers including 13 SCoT, 31 SSR, 5 STMS, 3 RAPD, 1 SCAR, and 1 ISSR, used for parental polymorphism and polymorphic markers UBC-855, 66 % for TA-59 and 100 % for TA-110, TA-135 and GA-16 were further used to hybridity assessments of F1 plants. The PIC value for polymorphic markers ranged from 0.15 to 0.89 with an average value of 0.46. The highest PIC value was observed in UBC-855 marker (0.89), followed by TA-135 (0.62), TA-59 (0.50), and GA-16 (0.16) and lowest PIC value observed in TA-110 (0.15). From total crosses 31 F1 plants of six crosses were screened for true F1 hybridity assessment. STMS marker TA-59 was used for F1 hybrid purity assessment. This marker screened 31 F1 plants. TA-59 shows specific size amplicon in female and male parents. The results of this investigation proved that SSR markers are well polymorphic and more useful markers within species of chickpea genotypes to perform the molecular characterization and to test the genetic hybridity of F1 plants. Among the tested SSR markers TA-59, TA-110, TA-135, GA-16, UBC-855 shows high percentage of polymorphism and PIC value which will were more helpful for parental diversity analysis and hybridity assessment.

Abstract:
The high melting point, high sputtering threshold and low tritium inventory rendered W as a potentially suitable material in fusion devices. The major problem associated with presently available tungsten grades as structural materials is its brittleness at lower temperatures. This is further worsened by irradiation embrittlement. A strategy for ductility improvement is producing a composite, with the brittle W matrix being reinforced by short fibres of tantalum. As Ta is more ductile than W it can therefore divert or stop cracks propagating in the W matrix. In the present research Ta short fibres and powder were used as reinforcement component for W by alloying Ta short fibres or powder in a W powder matrix. The composites were subsequently irradiated with deuterium to assess the retention of this hydrogenic species in the materials. The irradiated composites, with Ta contents of 10 or 20 at%, were produced from pure elemental powders (W-Ta powder composites), and pure W powder and Ta fibre (W-Ta fibre composites) with 100 μm in diameter by low energy ball milling in argon atmosphere. These materials were consolidated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) in the temperature 1200 to 1600 ºC range. Pure W and Ta plates (controls) and W-Ta composites were irradiated with He+ ions (optional pre-implantation step) and D+ ion beams at room temperature with fluences in the 1020-1021 at/m2 range. Blistering and deuterium retention in W and Ta plates and in W-Ta composites were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and thermal desorption analysis. The deuterium concentration was evaluated trough nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) using 0.75 to 2.1 MeV 3He+ beam and the D(3He,p)α reaction. The investigations showed that deuterium irradiation induced microstructural modifications producing blistering in Ta plates as well as in W-Ta composites (Figure 1). These effects increased substantially in the Ta and W-Ta materials with the He pre-implantation step, while blisters have not been observed in the W plates either for D+ or He+ plus D+ implantation. Higher deuterium retention was observed by thermal desorption for the composites than for the W plates. Moreover the present study revealed that D+ trapping in the composites is dependent on the microstructure with higher retention observed for fibers than for powder. This work has been performed under the Contract of Association between EURATOM and Instituto Superior Tecnico. Abstract:
In this paper, a new layer removal method for measurement of local residual stress through the thickness of clad plates is developed using inherent strain which is considered a source of residual stress. Using the new method, residual stresses in explosively clad plates of Ni/SUS304 and Zr/Zr/Ta/SUS304 are measured. Then, residual stresses remaining in a pipe joint piece cut from the explosively clad plate are estimated by an elastic analysis using inherent strain. Furthermore, the validity of a mechanical stress reduction method by applying axial compressive load to the pipe joint piece, is demonstrated by elastic-plastic FEM analysis.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In previous contexts, outdoor gyms have been described as gender neutral as they are beingused equally by men and women (Malmö 2014). This can be problematic since the term“gender neutral” often lead to that men’s and women’s different experiences get overlookedwithin urban planning (Larsson & Jalakas, 2014, s. 51f).Within this essay, we will use three theoretical inputs - territorialisation, gender and securityto examine outdoor gyms in the park Pildammsparken in Malmö, from a gender perspective. We have looked at people’s movements at the gyms and how people use them throughobservations. We have gained knowledge about how people perceive the gyms throughinterviews. The observations and the interviews took place within two weeks in April duringdifferent times of the day, to comprehend if the gyms were used differently at different times. The difference in how men and women use and perceive the outdoor gyms can be seenthrough our interviews, in which women state that they feel insecure during daytime due tobeing stared at and feeling scared when it’s dark outside. Women therefore don’t equallypartake at outdoor gyms, because their freedom of movement are limited. The young, physically fit, male body is therefore the body that take place at outdoor gyms. Finally, weargue that societal structures and norms has such an effect on public spaces, that men andwomen cannot with equal rights take part of the city.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this essay I make an attempt to define the abilities that helped me in my antisocial choices that as a woman to become a decorator and throw me into the male construction industry. I use the metaphor of the wolf pack, which may symbolize hierarchies, norms, and even gender. What helped me to take my place among the males? Is it practical knowledge to deal with new antisocial environments, or what is it? I have not only survived, but also survived in the industry. In the pursuit of abilities and its knowledge of relevance, I analyse different stories from my 25 years in the profession and how I 've handled it encountered. These abilities I have then analysed on the basis of gender and Aristotle and Nussbaum's concept of knowledge, mainly Fronesis and various virtues. All in a try to see if it has to do with knowledge to survive in unfamiliar terrain.

Abstract:
This paper is a qualitative study based on a phenomenological perspective. The purpose of the study has been to examine how the artistic work with a Community Theatre can visualize the beliefs held by young girls in Skellefteå today regarding the power structures that exist in their lives and how they affect them. Furthermore, the study aims to examine how the work of a theater can provide participants with the opportunity to visualize these structures of power to the public. Questions raised in the study concerns the power structures the young girls are experiencing in their daily lives, how they affect them, how to through a theater approach them in an artistic practice and how the participants' experience of existing power structures is influenced by the work of a theater. The study began with a focus conversation about the participants' view of power in different areas. Based on the conversation, we decided to revise and orchestrate a part of Shakespeare's Othello, focusing on jealousy and men's violence against women in intimate relationships. This was rehearsed and performed to an audience during Trästockfestivalen in Skellefteå. The study ended with a further focus conversation which concerned the work of the theater production and how it affected the participants' view of power. The results show that participants believe that it has been useful to work with the power structures in this way. In particular, they have appreciated the discussions and the opportunity of amateurs to work with the profession, and in this work get visibility to real-life, current issues for an audience.

Abstract:
Solar flat plate collector (SFPC) is a heat exchanger that transforms radiant solar energy into thermal energy in the form of heated fluid. The performance of SFPC is very much dependent on operating/input and response/output parameter which mainly affects the efficiency of SFPC. This chapter presented the modeling and optimization of SFPC system parameters (solar radiation [I], wind velocity [V], ambient temperature [Ta], and Inlet Temperature [Ti]) for SFPC. Modified-fuzzy set theory with MOOSRA (M-FST-MOOSRA) was employed to optimize the SFPC system. Based on results, trail no. 14 (i.e., I = 825 W/m2, V = 1.4 m/s, Ta = 28.8oC, and Ti = 66.4oC) gave highest RPI among the other trail nos. and shows the optimal setting which results in higher efficiency and better performance for the SFPC. Further, parametric analysis is also done to determine the most important parameter followed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis. Last, confirmatory test are conducted to verify and validate the proposed method with the experimental results.

Abstract:
Contrary to the traditional viewpoint which interpreted Plato’s stance towards poetry as derogatory, more recently scholars have rightly argued that Plato’s treatment of painting is too complicated to be dismissed as negative only. Painting is for Plato a well-adapted analogy which allows him to discuss highly intricate philosophical issues, as, for example, the relationship of the forms with our earthly realm of sense-perception. It also provides him with useful vocabulary to conduct his philosophical investigations. In this paper, I focus on Plato’s employment of one particular pictorial technique, that of shadow-painting (skiagraphia). I argue that this innovative 5th century technique served Plato as a metaphor for discussing the intricate philosophical issue of opposition and antithesis (ta enantia). In specific terms, Plato associates the technique of skiagraphia with the poets, sophists and the unsophisticated non-philosophical majority.

Abstract:
After the first report of deep eutectic mixtures by the team of Abbott in 2003, the advent of green synthesis has been progressively changing the way synthetic chemistry is thought and also taught. Since then, a plethora of efforts worldwide have been taken to stretch the ideas of sustainable as well as environmentally benign approaches to do the crucial synthetic organic transformations under operationally simple yet effective conditions. Although, till date, several green synthetic strategies for examples ultrasound, microwaves, flow as well as grindstone chemistry etc., and green reaction media (e.g. ionic liquid, water, scCO2, and so forth) have successfully been invented. But a low melting mixture of L-(+)-tartaric acid (TA) and N,N′-dimethylurea (DMU), usually plays a double and/or triple role (solvent, catalyst, and/or reagent), though still infancy but enjoys several eye-catching properties like biodegradability, recyclability, non-toxicity, good thermal stability, tunable physiochemical properties, low vapor pressure as well as reasonable prices in addition to the easy preparation with wide functional groups tolerance. To this context, keeping the importance of this novel low melting mixture in mind, we intended to reveal the advancements taken place in this wonderful area of research since its first report by the Köenig’s group in 2011 to till date. In this particular chapter, firstly we would disclose the importance of the green synthesis followed by a brief description of deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) particularly emphasizing on the role of L-(+)-TA and DMU from modern synthetic chemistry perspective.

Abstract:
The idea that there may be a conflict between different genetic elements—for example, between chromosomal and mitochondrial genes—is a natural one. A wide range of phenomena, from distorted sex ratios and male sterility in plants to the evolution of chromosome form, may best be understood in terms of such conflict. Before discussing examples, however, it is useful to define ‘genomic conflict’. Suppose that two genetic elements, A and B, influence some phenotypic trait, T. Suppose, further, that some value of the trait, TA, would evolve if only genetic elements A were effective, and an alternative value, TB, if only elements B were effective. If TA and TB are not the same, then there is a potentiality for genomic conflict between elements A and B. In this chapter, we are mainly concerned with cases in which the two genetic elements are present in the same cell: hence the term ‘intragenomic’ conflict. However, the definition can be applied when the elements are in different cells in the same organism, or in different organisms: ‘parent-offspring conflict’ (Trivers, 1974; Parker & MacNair, 1978) is a case in which there is a conflict between genes expressed in different organisms. The occurrence of intragenomic conflict depends on how the genes are transmitted. Imagine a single-celled asexual haploid organism, with a single chromosome containing no transposable elements, one copy of which is transmitted to each daughter cell. Suppose further that the cell contains no symbionts or accessory genetic elements. There would then be no possibility of intragenomic conflict. In practice, conflict arises because cells contain transposons, plasmids, organelles and symbionts, and are sexual. Most biologists find the phenomena of intragenomic conflict unfamiliar and unexpected. It might seem that a good way of making sense of the subject would be to classify the genes concerned according to whether they are in parasites, mutualists, organelles or chromosomes. The snag is that parasites can evolve into mutualists and vice versa, symbionts can become organelles, genes can transfer from organelles to chromosomes, and chromosomal genes may be well behaved, transposable or ‘driving’. For these reasons, we will discuss intragenomic conflict under four heads, according to the different ways in which genes can obtain an unfair advantage over their fellows.

"Examples of British Brecht discussed here include George Devine’s production of The Good Woman of Setzuan, Sam Wanamaker’s The Threepenny Opera and William Gaskill’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle. (Throughout this book all the play titles given reproduce exactly the translations used for the particular productions discussed.) The chapter also includes a brief assessment of the relationship between the work of Brecht and that of key British playwrights: John Arden, Arnold Wesker, John Osborne, Robert Bolt and Edward Bond. Chapter 3 describes the ways in which the political upheavals of 1968 and the social and artistic developments in Britain made Brecht eminently suitable and accessible to radical theatre groups. It analyses the impact of politically committed theatre practitioners’ attempts to take on all aspects of Brecht’s dramatic theory, political philosophy and, as far as possible, theatre practice. Detailed analyses of Brecht productions by some key radical companies (e.g. Foco Novo, Belt and Braces Roadshow, Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre, Manchester’s Contact Theatre and Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre) demonstrate how their commitment to the integra-tion of political meaning and aesthetic expression contributed to the growing understanding and acceptance of Brecht’s theatre in Britain. This achievement is contrasted in Chapter 4 with the ways in which Brecht’s plays were incorporated into the classical repertoire by the national companies – the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre – in the 1970s and 1980s. Here there is an assessment of the damaging impact on these Brecht productions of the companies’ hierarchical structure and organisation, the all-too-frequently non-collaborative approaches to production, and the undue emphasis placed on performance style and set design, often in isolation from a genuine commitment to the intrinsic, socio-political meaning of the texts. The chapter centres on the productions of Brecht in the 1970s and 1980s for the Royal Shakespeare Company directed by Howard Davies, and on those at the National Theatre directed by John Dexter and Richard Eyre. Chapter 5 presents three case studies, that is, detailed accounts based on access to rehears-als and on interviews with the relevant directors and performers, of three major British productions of Brecht plays in the early 1990s. The first case study is of the award-winning production of The Good Person of Sichuan at the National Theatre in 1989/90, directed by Deborah Warner, with Fiona Shaw as Shen Te/Shui Ta. The second is of the Citizens Theatre’s 1990 production of Mother Courage, directed by Philip Prowse, with Glenda Jackson in the title role. And the third is of the National Theatre’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, directed in 1991 by Di Trevis, with Antony Sher as Ui. The main focus of this chapter and its case-studies is the relationship in practice between Brechtian theory, and the aesthetics and the politics of the texts, in both the rehearsal process and the finished performances." Abstract:
Abstract Thermoacoustics (TA) deals with the conversion of heat into sound and vice versa. The device that transfers energy from a low temperature reservoir to a high temperature one by utilizing acoustic work is called TA cooler (TAC). The main components of a typical TA device are a resonator, a regenerator (stack of parallel plates) and two heat exchangers. The thermoacoustic phenomenon takes place in the stack when a nonzero temperature gradient imposed along the regenerator (i.e. parallel to the direction of the sound wave propagation) interacts with the sound wave oscillations. The low temperature at the cold of TAC can be used to condense humid water from the air and also reduce the moisture in the air at some humid areas. In the current study, the high intensity sound waves was produced by the speaker to drive a TA cooler to produce cooling power at a cold temperature of around 18°C. The drainage of condensate in the regenerator is the key for the system performance, because if the porous structure will be blocked by the condensate, TA phenomenon cannot take place in the regenerator. This work is dedicated to investigate the effect from temperature gradient created in TAC for condensation enhancement. 3D printer was used to design and fabricate different structures of regenerator, and then the systematic cooling capacity was measured and compared with different designs of regenerators. Energy balance was also discussed for each type of regenerator. The potential application of this investigation can be an autonomous thermoacoustic cooler system for water harvesting in arid areas. This work can be used to evaluate how the TA effect can be affected by the condensation if humid air is used as the working fluid.

Abstract:
The present paper evaluates the behavior, in design and part load working conditions, of a complex gas turbine cycle with multiple intercooled compression, and the optional preheating of the air at the high pressure compressor outlet by means of the gas turbine outlet hot gas. The results are then compared with those obtained by a Brayton cycle gas turbine, with or without preheating of the air at the high pressure compressor outlet. Subsequently, the performance of complex combined cycles, with intercooled gas turbine as topper and one, two or three pressure level steam cycle as bottomer, in design and part load working conditions is also evaluated. The performance of these complex combined plants is then compared with that obtained by a Brayton cycle gas turbine as topper and one, two or three pressure level steam cycle as bottomer. Part load working conditions are realized by varying either the inlet guide vane angle of the first compressor nozzles or the maximum temperature at the combustor outlet. The study shows that in part load working conditions obtained by varying IGV, the complex cycles, in the examined gas turbine or in the combined cycle power plants, give conversion efficiencies decidedly greater than those obtainable by varying combustor exit temperature. Furthermore it is found that these complex power plant efficiencies, in part load working conditions, are far greater than those obtained by the Brayton cycle gas turbine, or by combined cycle with Brayton cycle gas turbine as topper, if IGV adjustment is adopted. If power variation is obtained with combustor outlet temperature adjustment, the efficiencies of the combined power plants with complex or Brayton cycle gas turbines, are substantially the same, for the same relative power variation.

Abstract:
Significant progress has been made in the installation and initial operation of several IGCC power plants. At least six IGCC projects are scheduled to enter commercial operation in the USA and in Europe during 1996. Several additional IGCC projects are under construction or under development using many different gasification systems. Gas turbine manufacturers introduced advanced gas turbine technology in 1995, resulting in IGCC efficiency for coal and heavy oil-fired plants of up to 50% (LHV) with plant costs consistent with conventional steam plants. Gas turbine developments specifically aimed at IGCC applications allow the use of environmentally low quality fuels without added impact on the environment. This paper discusses the current operating experience of several of the initial IGCC plants and illustrates the very attractive fuels flexibility with the combined-cycle plants burning naphtha or distillate oils initially with later conversions to IGCC burning lignite, heavy oil or orimulsion. This paper also discusses the heat rate and output performance capabilities of the IGCC with H level gas turbine technology and the resulting impacts on the cost of electricity from IGCC plants.

Abstract:
The high grade performance of gaskets for bolted flange connections in terms of TA Luft and VDI guideline 2440 assumes the fulfilment of the following requirements: Long-term suitability of the gasket particularly with regard to the exposure to the operating temperature and the medium; this requires the investigation of the long-term behaviour, e.g. according to DIN 28090-2 and DIN 28090-3 The design of flange connections (strength and tightness proof) on the basis of realistic gasket characteristics determined experimentally, e. g. according to DIN 28090-1 or prEN 13555 Compliance with the specific leakage rate of 10-4 mbar 1 / (s·m) in a type test at 1 bar test pressure. Similar requirements are effective for packings of stuffing boxes, in which the type test is carried out under more intensive boundary conditions compared to the flange connections: real operating pressure and stem strokes. In the frame of a research project sponsored by the German chemical industry a choice of gaskets were tested which cover all gasket types in the European gasket standard EN 1514 part 1 to 7. The gasket types were classified in view of their high grade performance potential. Similar investigations and analyses were carried out for standard packings for stuffing boxes. These results and their consequences are presented. In addition to the explicitly mentioned requirements in VDI 2440 further requirements should be seen as important in view of the assurance of high grade performance: Quality control during gasket production This can be ensured by manufacturers quality management and by compliance with requirements of corresponding quality standards, e.g. DIN 28091 (an European quality standard (prEN 14772) for gaskets is in preparation) Controlled assembly, which is necessary to realise the design assembly bolt load with limited scattering High grade performance proof of gaskets, more correctly of gasketed bolted flange connections has to be regarded as a complex matter in opposition to common interpretations and involves more than just the compliance with a certain leakage rate criterion of a special type test.

Abstract:
The key components of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combined Cycle (PFBC) plants are the specially designed gas turbine, which we refer to as the PFBC machine, and the pressurized fluidized bed boiler used to generate and superheat steam for expansion in a steam turbine, in ABB’s P200 and P800 modules, ABB Stal’s 17 MWe GT35P and 70 MWe GT140P machines, respectively, are used. Particulate cleanup before expansion in the turbine sections is with cyclones. So far, over 70,000 hours of operation has been accumulated on P200 modules in the world’s first PFBC plants, demonstrating that PFBC meets the expectations. The GT35P machines have been found to perform as expected, although some teething problems have also been experienced. The next P200 plant will be built in Germany for operation on brown coal. The first GT140P machine has been manufactured. After shop testing in Finspong, it will be shipped to Japan for installation in the first P800 plant, which is under construction. Future development of the PFBC machines are foreseen to include raising the turbine inlet temperature through combustion of a topping fuel in order to reach thermal efficiencies which ultimately may be in the range of 50 to 53% (LHV).

Full text
Abstract:
Gas-fired combined cycle power plants (CCP) are presently the most efficient systems for producing electricity with fossil fuels. Gas turbines have been and are being improved remarkably during the last years; presently they achieve efficiencies of more than 38% and gas turbine outlet temperatures of up to 610°C. These high outlet temperatures require modifications and improvements of heat recovery steam generators (HRSG). Presently dual pressure HRSGs are most commonly used in combined cycle power stations. The next step seems to be the triple-pressure HRSG to be able to utilise the high gas turbine outlet temperatures efficiently and to reduce exergy losses caused by the heat transfer between exhaust gas and the steam cycle. However, such triple-pressure systems are complicated considering parallel tube bundles as well as start up operation and load changes. For that reason an attempt has been made to replace such multiple pressure systems by a modified Rankine cycle with only a single-pressure level. In the case of the same total heat transfer surfaces this innovative single-pressure system achieves approximately the same efficiency as the triple-pressure system. By optimising the heat recovery from the exhaust gas to the steam/water cycle, i.e. minimising exergy losses, the stack temperature is much higher. Increasing the heat transfer surfaces means a decrease of the stack temperature and a further improvement of the overall CCP-efficiency. Therefore one has to be aware that the proposed system offers advantages not only in the case of a foreseeable increase of gas turbine outlet temperatures but also for presently available gas turbines. Using existing highly efficient gas turbines and subcritical steam conditions, power plants with this proposed Eisenkolb Single Pressure (ESP_CCP) heat recovery steam generator achieve thermal efficiencies of about 58.7% (LHV).
