Abstract:
This thesis investigates the effects of urban land use on transportation system performance in terms of various land use factors such as density, mixed or single land use, jobs-housing balance, street patterns, transit accessibility. Reviewed studies show that urban land use has considerable effects on transportation system performance measures which are average travel distances per person, level of service, air quality, gasoline consumption etc. Based on the obtained results, it is concluded that one of the basic reasons behind increasing auto dependency and outcoming problems in recent years

Abstract:
Sustainable transportation aims encouragement of non-motorized (pedestrian and bicyclist) and shared-ride transportation modes instead of car-dependent travels. This is important for university campuses, as they have better chance to implement such policies in a rather controlled traffic network, and can set an example to other communities. Most of sustainable campus transportation programs boil down to reduction of car-based emission cost of campus mobility, which is always the first step in developing more sustainable transportation policies. Cetiner, Demet. "A Risk-sensitive Approach For Airline Network Revenue Management Problems." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12608920/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, airline network revenue management problem is considered for the case with no cancellations and overbooking. In literature, there exist several approximate probabilistic and deterministic mathematical models developed in order to maximize expected revenue at the end of the reservation period. The aim of this study is to develop models considering also the risks involved in the proposed booking control policies. Two linear programming models are proposed which incorporate the variance of the revenue. The objective of the models is to effectively balance the tradeoff between the

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the capacitated vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) is studied, where the objective is to serve a set of geographically dispersed customers with known demands and predefined time windows at the minimum cost. It is hard to find an optimal solution for the VRPTW even if the problem size is small. Therefore, many heuristic methods are developed to obtain near optimal solutions. In this study a local search algorithm is proposed for solving the VRPTW, which consist of route construction and route improvement phases. Computational experiments are conducted with Solomon

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, the resilient modulus values obtained from repeated unconfined or triaxial compression tests are used as the elastic modulus of granular layers in structural analysis of flexible pavements. Sometimes the resilient modulus of granular materials are estimated from known California bearing ratios (CBR) or stabilometer resistance (R) values by simple regression equations. On the other hand, it is well known that stress-strain relation for unbound granular materials is nonlinear and the resilient modulus increases with the increase in stress intensity. Traffic safety is an important problem in today&rsquo
s world with increasing number of fatalities and injuries in traffic accidents. For the solution of this problem, determination of accident prone locations on a network and reasons behind is an essential step, which is studied to some extend via different traffic accident analyses in the literature. While major factors affecting accident risk, such as speed, congestion, infrastructural aspects are known, it is still very difficult to figure out the interaction among these factors, due to complexity in the spatial and temporal distributio

Abstract:
The economic evaluation of a new airport investment requires the use of estimated future air passenger demand.Today it is well known that air passenger demand is basicly dependent on various socioeconomic factors of the country and the region where the planned airport would serve. This study is focused on estimating the future air passenger demand for planned airports in Turkey where the historical air passsenger data is not available. For these purposses, neural networks and multi-linear regression were used to develop forecasting models. Yuksekol, Irem. "Evaluation Of Pedestrian Safety Around Bus Stops Using Geographic Information Systems." Master's thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614977/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users in terms of traffic safety. Public transit users mostly have a pedestrian trip before and/or after the transit one. Thus, pedestrian activity is produced at transit stops naturally. The main focus of this study is pedestrian safety problems around transit stops, more specifically bus stops. The proposed methodology first includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses of the pedestrian safety along the study corridors and around bus stops on them
this enables determination of accident-prone corridor segments and bus stops, respectively.

Abstract:
This study deals with a municipal solid waste management system in which the strategic and tactical decisions are addressed simultaneously. In the system, the number and locations of the transfer facilities which serve to the particular solid waste pick-up points and the landfill are determined. Additionally, routing plans are constructed for the vehicles which collect the solid waste from the pick-up points by regarding the load capacity of the vehicles and shift time restrictions. We formulate this reverse logistics system as a location-routing problem with two facility layers. Mathematical

The negative social and economic results of traffic accidents are the most serious problems within the concept of traffic safety. Every year, unfortunately, a huge number of traffic accidents result in destructive losses. Especially, when the holiness of human life is concerned, traffic safety has an invaluable role for the traffic improvement strategies. In this manner, Turkey places one of the highest ranks regarding the growing rate and severity of traffic accidents that should be immediately taken under control.
