Abstract:
Purpose:To test the hypotheses that the metabolic profile of table tennis is dominantly aerobic, anaerobic energy is related to the accumulated duration and intensity of rallies, and activity and metabolic profile are interrelated with the individual fitness profile determined via table tennis–specific tests. Methods:Eleven male experienced table tennis players (22 ± 3 y, 77.6 ± 18.9 kg, 177.1 ± 8.1 cm) underwent 2 simulated table tennis matches to analyze aerobic (WOXID) energy, anaerobic glycolytic (WBLC) energy, and phosphocreatine breakdown (WPCr); a table tennis–specific graded exercise test to measure ventilatory threshold and peak oxygen uptake; and an exhaustive supramaximal table tennis effort to determine maximal accumulated deficit of oxygen. Results:WOXID, WBLC, and WPCr corresponded to 96.5% ± 1.7%, 1.0% ± 0.7%, and 2.5% ± 1.4%, respectively. WOXID was interrelated with rally duration (r = .81) and number of shots per rally (r = .77), whereas match intensity was correlated with WPCr (r = .62) and maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (r = .58). Conclusions:The metabolic profile of table tennis is predominantly aerobic and interrelated with the individual fitness profile determined via table tennis–specific tests. Table tennis–specific ventilatory threshold determines the average oxygen uptake and overall WOXID, whereas table tennis–specific maximal accumulated oxygen deficit indicates the ability to use and sustain slightly higher blood lactate concentration and WBLC during the match.

Abstract:
Lightweight sandwich panels (LWSP) have been used in various sectors of construction and transportation industries. However, due to the cost and complexity of the manufacturing process, their usage in high level sport equipment has been somewhat neglected. This study investigates the feasibility of using a wood veneer sandwich panel to construct the playing surface of a table tennis table. The effects of material parameters, such as the face sheet thickness, core configuration, core thickness and surface coating, on the dynamic friction coefficient and coefficient of restitution, which ultimately dictate the speed, bounce and spin of the ball, will be examined. All results from characterisation of the LWSP table using the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) standards will be compared with those from commercially available tables. The material parameters identified to yield the most consistent and favourable characteristics for a table tennis game will be applied for construction of a full size demonstration table.

Abstract:
In general, sporting triumphs are likely to be direct reflections of a society’s socioeconomic development. Chinese table tennis achievements have had a huge impact on Chinese society since 1950. The Chinese table tennis team has won every title in a row, which not only humiliates the World Table Tennis Federation (ITBF) but also additionally prompts the present situation of “flourishing Chinese table tennis and debauched global table tennis.” Furthermore, the impacts of achievement on Chinese society are not restricted to sports. It essentially affects society. Regardless of the way that table tennis has a long history, there is little critical familiarity with the physiological necessities of players, particularly during challenge. In this layout, a gander was taken at exploring the ongoing comprehension of the body’s capabilities during table tennis planning and competition, as well as what kind of readiness is involved. The anaerobic alactic system is fundamentally called into play during hard practice and challenge, while the tirelessness structure is depended upon to recover the anaerobic stores depleted during such effort, according to match and practice examination of table tennis coordination. While the anaerobic alactic system is the most overwhelming structure involved during seasons of effort in table tennis, a solid breaking point in steadiness permits a player to recover more quickly for the accompanying match and day of competition. This study surveys explicit examinations connected with cutthroat table tennis and accentuates the requirement for table tennis-explicit preparation and exploration drives. The contribution of the study was to see how sports vision training affected certain visual abilities and table tennis players’ ability to play. The experimental group that followed a 12-week sports vision training regimen demonstrated a significant improvement in selected visual abilities and table tennis playing ability, according to the study’s findings. On all of the examined variables, the control group showed no significant improvement.

Abstract:
Table tennis is important and challenging project for robotics research, and table tennis robotics receives a lot of attention from academics. Trajectory tracking and prediction of table tennis is an important technology for table tennis robots, and its estimation accuracy is also disturbed by non-Gaussian noise. In this paper, a novel Kalman filter, called minimum error entropy unscented Kalman filter (MEEUKF), is employed to estimate the motion trajectory of physical model of a table tennis. The simulation results show that the MEEUKF algorithm shows outstanding performance in tracking and predicting the trajectory of table tennis compared to some existing algorithms.

Abstract:
The identification, positioning and grabbing path planning of table tennis balls are the preconditions for the robot to pick up table tennis balls autonomously. A method of table tennis identification, positioning and grabbing path planning based on monocular vision image processing is proposed. By analyzing the characteristics of table tennis images, a table tennis image segmentation method based on color and contour features is designed. The color and contour features of table tennis images are extracted, and HSV is used for image preprocessing. Image segmentation is processed by binarization, and Hough circle is used to detect contour recognition, and the segmentation image of table tennis balls is obtained by color combination. Convert the camera imaging coordinates to obtain the pixel position of the table tennis ball in the image. A ball picking path planning based on ant colony algorithm is designed. This paper provides a theoretical reference for the identification, positioning and path planning of autonomous ball picking.

Abstract:
This article takes table tennis as the research object, mainly extracts a large number of table tennis video trajectories, and combines the kinematic analysis method to reduce the noise of the extracted target to improve the accuracy of the table tennis trajectory and obtain the table tennis trajectory. The parameter group is used to simulate the trajectory of table tennis; based on the MATLAB environment to realize the table tennis trajectory simulation that provides the initial velocity and coordinates, complete the capture of the table tennis drop point. This article uses the two-dimensional information in the image to estimate the parameter values that form the three-dimensional information and then calculates the three-dimensional information based on the estimated parameter values. The unscented Kalman filter is used to estimate the trajectory parameters and rotation parameters of table tennis, and the algorithm for calculating and updating markers in real time is proposed, which reduces the influence of calculation errors on the estimation process and improves the accuracy of parameter estimation. First, establish a table tennis movement model and choose a suitable model to describe the translation and rotation movement of the table tennis. Then, based on the extended Kalman filter algorithm and the unscented Kalman filter algorithm, the ball flight trajectory estimation algorithm is established. Finally, an actual image acquisition system is built to collect trajectory information and surface information images from the actual table tennis movement. Processing is performed to obtain the positions of the center of the ping pong ball and the marked points on the corresponding sensors. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively estimate the trajectory, linear velocity, and angular velocity parameters of a table tennis ball, and the selection of the initial value has little effect on the algorithm.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the 2004-2015 financial performance (FP) of the national non-profit US Table Tennis Association using financial effectiveness (FE) indicators and financial efficiency (FY) ratios. Design/methodology/approach Archival data were used together with a case study method. FP was evaluated by net income; FE was indicated by total assets and total revenues while FY was examined by program services ratios and support services ratios. Findings On an average, the FP of the organization was poor ($6,475.00 net loss per year), FE was moderate (50 percent increases in assets and revenues), and the FY was poor (80 percent revenues spent on program services with a return on asset of 201.5 percent). Research limitations/implications By using case study method, the results may not be generalizable to other national non-profit sports organizations with non-financial goals. Practical implications The paper suggests that national non-profit organizations can enhance their FP by focusing on both FE and FY. Originality/value The study utilized both FE and FY measures to evaluate the FPs – a major shortfall in similar studies.

Abstract:
Spatial cognition facilitates the successful completion of specific cognitive tasks through lateral processing and neuroplasticity. Long-term training in table tennis induces neural processing efficiency in the visuospatial cognitive processing cortex of athletes. However, the lateralization characteristics and neural mechanisms of visual–spatial cognitive processing in table tennis players in non-sport domains are unclear. This study utilized event-related potentials to investigate differences in the spatial cognition abilities of regular college students (controls) and table tennis players. A total of 48 participants (28 controls; 20 s-level national table tennis players) completed spatial cognitive tasks while electroencephalography data were recorded. Task performance was better in the table tennis group than in the control group (reaction time: P < 0.001; correct number/sec: P = 0.043), P3 amplitude was greater in the table tennis group (P = 0.040), spatial cognition showed obvious lateralization characteristics (P < 0.001), table tennis players showed a more obvious right-hemisphere advantage, and the P3 amplitude in the right hemisphere was significantly greater in table tennis athletes than in the control group. (P = 0.044). Our findings demonstrate a right-hemisphere advantage in spatial cognition. Long-term training strengthened the visual–spatial processing ability of table tennis players, and this advantage effect was reflected in the neuroplasticity of the right hemisphere (the dominant hemisphere for spatial processing).

Abstract:
Purpose By using table tennis as an example and conducting an in-depth investigation into the impact of market demand factors on membership consumption of table tennis club members in the USA, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate the opportunities and marketing efforts needed for Asian sports to survive and thrive in North America, in which consumer demand factors assessing core program features of table tennis clubs were found to be very influential of cognitive, affective, and behavioral consumptions of table tennis club members. Design/methodology/approach Through conducting a review of literature, observations of club operations, and interviews of club administrators and club members representing various table tennis clubs, a preliminary questionnaire was formulated for this study. The initial questionnaire was submitted to a panel of five experts, for a test of content validity. By incorporating their suggestions, editing was made to improve a number of the items in the questionnaire. Data collection took place in two national table tennis tournaments, two local tournaments, and six table tennis clubs. Procedures in SPSS 19.0 (SPSS, 2009) and Mplus 5.21 were carried out for data analyses. Findings The findings of this study are that market demand factors would be significantly related to consumer perceived benefits and perceived value, and in turn related to consumer satisfaction of table tennis club membership. The market demand factors had a positive impact on perceived value and benefits confirmed the theoretical framework and previous research findings, which also made a practical sense that a table tennis club needs to offer product features and meet expectations of its current and potential members in order to enhance program value and benefits perceived by its members. Originality/value The past two decades have marked the speediest rise of a globalized sport production and consumption trend. In an era of globalized sport marketplace, sports have become a business commodity to meet the needs of commerce. For an Asian sport to penetrate into the North American marketplace as table tennis has done, it would be wise to develop regional network, strategies, product, and promotions. It is expected that table tennis as a popular Asian sport will continue being spread to other parts of the world; thus, the findings of this study have potential relevance to promoting table tennis globally.

Abstract:
In the system design of table tennis robot, the important influencing factors of automatic detection of technical and tactical indicators for table tennis are table tennis rotation state, trajectory, and rebound force. But the general prediction algorithm cannot process the time series data and give the corresponding rotation state. Therefore, this paper studies the automatic detection method of technical and tactical indicators for table tennis based on the trajectory prediction using the compensation fuzzy neural network. In this paper, the compensation fuzzy neural network algorithm which combines the compensation fuzzy algorithm and recurrent neural network is selected to construct the automatic detection of technical and tactical indicators for table tennis. The experimental results show that the convergence time of the compensation fuzzy neural network is shorter, the training time is shortened, and the prediction accuracy is improved. At the same time, in terms of performance testing, the model can accurately distinguish the influence of table tennis rotation state and rebound on table tennis motion estimation, so as to improve the accuracy of motion trajectory prediction. In addition, the accuracy of trajectory prediction will be improved with the increase of input data. When the number of data reaches 30, the trajectory prediction error is within the actual acceptable error range.

Abstract:
Compared with optical sensors, wearable inertial sensors have many advantages such as low cost, small size, more comprehensive application range, no space restrictions and occlusion, better protection of user privacy, and more suitable for sports applications. This article aims to solve irregular actions that table tennis enthusiasts do not know in actual situations. We use wearable inertial sensors to obtain human table tennis action data of professional table tennis players and non-professional table tennis players, and extract the features from them. Finally, we propose a new method based on multi-dimensional feature fusion convolutional neural network and fine-grained evaluation of human table tennis actions. Realize ping-pong action recognition and evaluation, and then achieve the purpose of auxiliary training. The experimental results prove that our proposed multi-dimensional feature fusion convolutional neural network has an average recognition rate that is 0.17 and 0.16 higher than that of CNN and Inception-CNN on the nine-axis non-professional test set, which proves that we can better distinguish different human table tennis actions and have a more robust generalization performance. Therefore, on this basis, we have better realized the enthusiast of table tennis the purpose of the action for auxiliary training.

Abstract:
Total daily energy expenditure (TEE) and physical activity level (PAL) are important for adequate nutritional management in athletes. The PAL of table tennis has been estimated to about 2.0: it is categorized as a moderateactivity sport (4.0 metabolic equivalents [METs]) in the Compendium of Physical Activities. However, modern table tennis makes high physiological demands. The aims of the current study were to examine (1) TEE and PAL of competitive table tennis players and (2) the physiological demands of various types of table tennis practice. In Experiment 1, we measured TEE and PAL in 10 Japanese college competitive table tennis players (aged 19.9 ± 1.1 years) using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method during training and with an exercise training log and self-reported energy intake. TEE was 15.5 ± 1.9 MJ·day-1 (3695 ± 449 kcal·day-1); PAL was 2.53 ± 0.25; and the average training duration was 181 ± 38 min·day-1. In Experiment 2, we measured METs of five different practices in seven college competition players (20.6 ± 1.2 years). Three practices without footwork were 4.5–5.2 METs, and two practices with footwork were 9.5–11.5 METs. Table tennis practices averaged 7.1 ± 3.2 METS demonstrating similarities with other vigorous racket sports. In conclusion the current Compendium of Physical Activities underestimates the physiological demands of table tennis practice for competition; the estimated energy requirement should be based on DLW method data.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigates the relationship of trunk rotational velocity with mobility and curvature of the spine in wheelchair table tennis players. Eleven para table tennis players and 13 able-bodied athletes performed 5 seated trunk rotations to each side with 1 kg barbell placed on the shoulders. Trunk rotational velocity and respective angular displacement were significantly lower in para table tennis players compared to able-bodied athletes. Both groups showed similar values of thoracic kyphosis. However, para table tennis players exhibited lower lumbar inversion and pelvic retroversion compared to able-bodied athletes. Peak and mean velocity in the acceleration phase of trunk rotation correlated with angular displacement in both para table tennis players (r=0.912, p=0.001; r=0.819, p=0.013) and able-bodied athletes (r=0.790, p=0.026; r=0.673, p=0.032). These velocity values were also associated with lumbar curvature (r=-0.787, p=0.003; r=− 0.713, p=0.009) and pelvic tilt angle (r=0.694, p=0.014; r=0.746, p=0.007) in para table tennis players. Findings indicate that slower velocity of trunk rotations in para table tennis players might be due to their limited range of trunk rotational motion. Decreased posterior concavity could also contribute to these lower values. However, other biomechanical factors may have an impact on the association between these variables and have yet to be documented.

The total table tennis (TT) time and the total resting time (TRT) were longer for men (p < 0.05), but game density was higher for women (p < 0.05). During rallies, the real playing time (RPT) was longer for women, while the TRT was longer for men (p < 0.05). The maximum HR, minimum HR, and maximum LA concentrations were higher for men (p < 0.05). The obtained data reveal gender differences in the physiological, metabolic, structural, and temporal variables in table tennis players. The analysis of the studied variables could allow training sessions to be planned and organized according to table tennis players’ gender.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate table tennis players’ personality traits and motives in the frame of the Big Five personality model and the self-determination theory (SDT) of motivation. A total of 447 Italian table tennis players ranging in level of play between the regional and international levels participated in the study. They completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their personality traits and motives to play table tennis. Findings showed conscientiousness as the most distinctive trait of table tennis players. No differences were detected between elite and non-elite players. Table tennis players are mainly motivated by factors belonging to the intrinsic pole of the self-determination motivational continuum. External reinforcements represent a minimal incentive to play this sport both for elite and non-elite athletes. The current findings help clarify the relationships between personality traits, playing certain types of sports, and achieving different performance levels. We conclude by outlining implications for applied sport psychology.

Abstract:
Sensor technology has been deeply into the sports industry, with the help of sensors to monitoring and collection data for the physical training in real-time. In table tennis, wearable sensors can record the amount of training, movement essentials, and the number of strokes of both hands and assist in the testing and evaluation of table tennis. This paper analyzes the application of wearable sensors in table tennis training activities and the details of signal collection and feature extraction. At the same time, machine learning technology often used to recognize and test table tennis training data, and a support vector machine (SVM) is one of the representative classifiers. Applying the processed signal data to the classification and testing of SVM can effectively identify the movement and evaluate the training effect and athletes’ physical fitness. The integration of intelligent sensors and table tennis can effectively improve the evaluation efficiency and quality in the process of teaching and training.
