Automated theorem proving with connection tableau calculi imposes search problems in tremendous search spaces. In this paper, we present a new approach to search space reduction in connection tableau calculi. In our approach structurally similar parts of the search space are compressed by means of disjunctive constraints. We describe the necessary changes of the calculus, and we develop elaborate techniques for an efficient constraint processing. Moreover, we present an experimental evaluation of our approach.

Abstract:
In contrast with Tableau algorithm, this paper presented a totally new approach to check the satisfiabilities of acyclic ALCNIR+-concepts―FTC algorithm. This calculus can make a direct judgment on the satisfiability of an acyclic ALCNIR+-concept by translating its description into a fully tiered clause whose satisfiability is directly available. FTC algorithm eliminates description overlaps to largest extent as it works on concept description directly. Therefore, FTC algorithm has notably better performance than Tableaux by saving a lot of spatial costs.

We present a novel reasoning calculus for the description logic SHOIQ^+---a knowledge representation formalism with applications in areas such as the Semantic Web. Unnecessary nondeterminism and the construction of large models are two primary sources of inefficiency in the tableau-based reasoning calculi used in state-of-the-art reasoners. In order to reduce nondeterminism, we base our calculus on hypertableau and hyperresolution calculi, which we extend with a blocking condition to ensure termination. The main content of this thesis concerns a tableau method for solving the satisfiability problem for the modal μ-calculus. A sound and complete tableau system for the modal μ-calculus is given. Since every tableau in such tableau system is finite and bounded by the length of the formula, the tableau system may be used as a decision procedure for determining the satisfiability of the formula. An alternative proof of the small model property is obtained: every satisfiable formula has a model of size singleexponential in the length of the formula. Description logics are a family of logics that provide formalisms for representing and reasoning about knowledge, based on describing concepts, in a structured and formally well-understood way. They provide the logical foundation for the web ontology language (OWL), which increased awareness of them recently. The most popular techniques for decision procedures for description logics are tableau reasoning methods, which have a long tradition and are well established in automated reasoning. Automated deduction procedures for modal logics, and related decidable fragments of first-order logic, are used in many real-world applications. A popular way of obtaining decision procedures for these logics is to base them on semantic tableau calculi. We focus on calculi that use unification, instead of the more widely employed approach of generating ground instantiations over the course of a derivation. The most common type of tableaux with unification are so-called free-variable tableaux, where variables are treated as global to the entire tableau. A long-standing open problem for procedur
