In current tablet manufacturing processes, there is a knowledge gap concerning material transformation and the subsequent impact on tablet properties; this gap presents a barrier to rational formulation / process design. In this study, it was hypothesized that the understanding of tablet microstructure is pivotal in bridging our knowledge about the materials, the manufacturing process, and the tablet properties. A series of X-ray micro computed tomography (microCT) characterization methods were developed to untangle material interactions during tablet manufacturing process, leading to an interpretation of tablet compaction mechanisms through 3-D representation of microstructural features. Numerical simulation of liquid intrusion based on microCT data was utilized in calculating tablet microstructure permeability, introducing a novel parameter for characterization of tablet dissolution properties. A tablet holder was designed and used in combination with paddle dissolution test to investigate tablet dissolution process, enabling the classification of dissolution mechanisms and identification of correspondent formulation design strategies. When incorporated with permeability results, a quantitative dissolution model capable of separating the contributions from disintegration and surface dissolution was derived. The dissection of the dissolution process provides a scientific framework supporting the Quality by Design paradigm for product and process development. . This work provides a strategy for building an integrated formulation design and characterization system incorporating microstructural analysis. It opens up an approach in which microstructure becomes a critical target for design and optimization.

Becker, Jane A. "Optimizing the touch tablet: the effects of lead-lag compensation and tablet size." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/94450.

Full text
Abstract:
A major design aspect of touch tablet operation is the display/control (D/C) gain. The primary objective of this research was the development and optimization of a variable D/C gain to improve human performance with touch tablets. This variable gain minimizes the speed-accuracy trade-off problem associated with traditional D/C gains. An additional objective.of this research was to determine the effect of tablet size on human performance. Display/control (D/C) gain is defined as the amount of movement which occurs on the display in response to a unit amount of movement of the control. With traditional D/C gains, there is a trade-off between low D/C gain which enables fine positioning, but results in very slow cursor movement, and high D/C gain which produces quick cursor movement but results in poor fine positioning ability. A lead-lag compensator which ameliorates this trade-off problem was developed. A lead-lag compensator is composed of a pure position gain component plus an additional velocity gain component. The results indicate that a lead-lag compensator greatly increased the target acquisition rate relative to a traditional D/C gain system. Percentage error increased with lead-lag compensation relative to an uncompensated system. The overall error rates were very low in all cases, however. Tablet size did not appear to significantly affect performance; performance on the three tablet sizes was generally consistent.

Abstract:
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the world has seen a changing trend in computing power thanks to advancements in technology. One peculiar platform in the field of usability is the tablet. Due to its recent introduction, it has had a relatively short life span with few established methodologies. The tablet is gaining market share at a tremendous speed and thus there has been a big demand of the appropriate evaluation methods. This comprehensive study intention is to; through a literature survey and transformation of collected material identify what usability requisites there are when developing a user interface for a tablet application. Existing user interface guidelines from various companies involving the development of tablet software are examined and paired up with usability principles in the creation of the usability checklist. The usability checklist practical effectiveness is tested on various tablet applications and the results are compared to the results of a usability user test  valuation. The majority of the usability problems found by the user test evaluation are codiscovered, in addition, there were a greater number of undiscovered usability problems that was identified with the checklist evaluation.

Abstract:
Interaction with virtual environments has for a long time been a subject of research and many different techniques and interaction-devices have been developed. Both 3D interaction devices such as wands, gloves etc are in use, but also traditional 2D interaction with a mouse and a keyboard exist. In this work we explore the possibility to use a TabletPC as an interaction-device for virtual environments. Several methods of interaction for tasks like selection and value manipulation were developed, using the human ability of spatial knowledge as an aid. The methods have been developed to suit a pen-based interface and the special features of the pen have been taken under consideration. Evaluation showed that the developed interaction methods were usable.

Abstract:
A single punch tablet machine has been instrumented to measure top and bottom punch force and punch displacement. A system has been developed for instrumenting rotary tablet machines using radio telemetery techniques and compared with conventional instrumentation systems. It is shown that the positioning of the measuring devices is critical for accurate measurements of forces and punch displacement. Samples of Micro crystalline cellulose (Avicel PH-102) and various grades of Lactose have been characterised and their compaction properties measured by a variety of techniques including breaking strength, changes in bed density under compaction and stress relaxation. The properties were determined using a specially constructed laboratory compaction simulator capable of reproducing compaction events typical of full scale production. It is shown that none of the conventional indices of compaction behaviour adequately predict the compaction properties of materials as described by their breaking strength: force profile. A phenomenon is described whereby the measurement of maximum force is not coincidental with the measurement of maximum punch penetration. Using model materials it is suggested that these differences are due to the visco elastic and plastic components of materials during compression. A new index - rise time - (the time between the initiation of compression and the point of maximum force application) is proposed as a useful means of predicting the behaviour of pharmaceutical solids during compression.

The mobile technology that emerged with the smartphones and tablets has changed the way people travel. This has changed both in how bookings are performed, but also in the way travel destinations are browsed and explored. This thesis concerns the design and implementation of a prototype for exploring destinations, with the goal of finding out the most essential factors and parameters for travel browsing. With literature studies, user survey, paper prototyping and Hi-Fi prototypes, an implementation was made, written in Objective C and created as an iPad prototype. The application uses a globe-, map-, image- and list view as the main interfacesfor browsing destinations. The prototype uses 14 di↵erent APIs, with diverse functionality to be able to take advantage of searching and filtering of destinations, made available by the APIs. By incorporating social platforms, it was made possible to better target the user’sinterest, making the experience and exploration more personalized.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, 2009.

This thesis explores how tablet performance is affected by microstructure, and how microstructure can be controlled by selection of excipients and compaction parameters. A systematic strategy for formulation and process design of pharmaceutical tablets is proposed. A modified nanoindenter method was used to test the mechanical behavior of diametrally compressed excipient granules. X ray micro computed tomography and Terahertz pulsed spectroscopy (TPS) and imaging (TPI) were used to analyze the microstructure of the tablet core and detect internal defects. Granule failure mechanisms are found to be consistent with tablet microstructure. MCC granules deform plastically when tested and X ray images show individual granules undergoing increasing deformation in tablets as higher compaction forces are used. A highly interconnected pore-structure limited tablet hardness and led to bursting behavior during dissolution. No effect of compaction force or speed was observed in dissolution profiles. Lactose granules fracture at strains less than 5%, forming monolithic structures with no evidence of initial granule shape or size. Pore size decreases as compaction force is increased for DCL 11 tablets. A decreasing pore size corresponds to increasing THz refractive index, tablet hardness and dissolution time. DCL 11 and DCL 14 tablets compacted under the same conditions have the same pore size distributions and hardness, although DCL 14 granules are weaker than DCL 11, and DCL 14 tablets dissolve up to four times slower than DCL 11 tablets. No difference was observed between the THz spectra of tablets made from the two grades of lactose.
(cont.) Further work is needed to understand the physical significance of the THz measurements. TPI can detect laminated tablets and is faster than X ray micro CT. In order to develop a rational design methodology, two key areas for future research are building a process model for compaction and developing quality testing methods that can be analyzed mechanistically. The capstone project explores strategic decision making for innovator firms and generic drug manufacturers in the period surrounding patent expiry. Statin products were used as an illustrative case of a pharmaceutical technology experiencing commoditization. A system dynamics model was used to simulate historic results and explore options for products still under patent protection. Current models of technology market dynamics apply to statins, but regulation and legislation play a large role in controlling market entry, leading to strong sequencing effects.

A process and physical system were developed to manufacture pharmaceutical tablets through an electrospinning operation and subsequent compaction. Theoretical simulations of the electrospinning were run to predict physical system performance, and a proof-of-concept device was designed, produced and tested. The process was demonstrated to be theoretically scalable to levels of production suitable for industrial pharmaceutical manufacturing. The system demonstrated clear advantages over preexisting pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, eliminating airborne drug particulate matter, minimizing liquid drying time, and enabling a more agile, liquid-based continuous manufacturing process to be utilized for pharmaceutical production. Future work was specified to refine and optimize the process, and improve process control and monitoring in order to meet the pharmaceutical industry's strict regulatory controls.

Abstract : Digital technologies are already part of our daily life and are present in various spheres, be it social, cultural, economic, religious, among many others. However, in spite of the medias being already present and influential in our society, it is questioned why the school has not yet effectively integrated the digital culture in its pedagogical practice. From this questioning, the present dissertation intends to reflect on the changes brought about by the media in the field of education, considering the school as a space which provides opportunities for social changes (and it is therefore concerned with the formation of autonomous, active and critic individuals), and cannot ignore the complex and dynamic process to which the current society is going through. More specifically, we will seek to analyze the initial formation of English teachers oriented to the integration of digital medias during their practicum. We understand that the technological advances in recent decades, as well as the global processes that derive from these advances, place English teaching and the integration of medias in its practice as relevant issues today. That being said, we intend to investigate the knowledge and use of digital media that the subjects of this study - 14 undergraduates of the English Language course at UFSC - have after finishing their theoretical formation and starting their teaching practice and how this digital literacy is used during the practicum. To accomplish this goal, this research used the methodological approach of a case study, participant observation, and instruments inspired by ethnographical research combined with qualitative and quantitative approaches. We also relied on the contributions from various authors: in the area of literacy and media education we counted on the studies of Belloni, Knobel, Lankshear, Soares and others; on teacher?s training and practicum we referred to Alvarez, Pimenta and Wielewicki. Warchauer and his expertise on the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) helped us in understanding the evolution of the use of technologies and its associated methodologies in teaching English. We concluded that the practicum is the moment in which the future teachers find favorable conditions, i.e. educational support, institutional support, the physical structure of the school, student groups, among other conditions, and thus can put into practice their knowledge of teaching, in an experimental and safely way. In this context, we noted that the inclusion of media in educational activities during the practicum was considered by many of the future teachers from two perspectives: as a valuable tool in supporting the teaching of English, and also for its cultural characteristics. In the first case, the Internet and medias provided authentic and interesting materials that were relevant to the context of the students. As a cultural object, the medias were perceived by teachers as part of the digital culture in which most young generation of students were part of (cyberculture). Most students seemed to be already familiar in using and interacting in different online environments. In this sense, the integration of media in pedagogical context was aimed at bringing the culture practiced by students out of school into the classroom, with attractive and dynamic activities, in which could promote the language learning in a collaborative and enjoyable way, as well as meaningful to the learners.

Abstract:
Throughout the last decade handheld tablet devices have become a common part of the lives of many people. While these tablets have been widely used for games, they have been rarely used as a medium for board games in which the tablet is the game board and players interact with it using physical game tokens. The main topic of this thesis is to research past attempts at creating tablet-based board games and to use the knowledge gained from this research to develop a new, more accessible way to develop games for this medium. The Minotauros JavaScript Library, which was created to allow developers to make tablet-based board games for most tablets. The library’s functionality was tested through users playing a simple game, Roll, that implemented the library. Through thorough testing, it was found that the library is fully functional and has been made publicly available. The research behind the functionality, testing, and results of the creation of this library are detailed in this thesis.

Abstract:
In recent years, students and educators alike have utilized new technologies such as tablet computers as a means of enhancing the learning process. While prior research suggests that these implementations within the classroom provide a new and beneficial method of relaying and learning information, scientists have begun to explore the possible side effects that these technologies have on the learning process. Although much of the current literature suggests that learning from an electronic screen does not affect efficacy compared to learning from printed text (Bayliss et al., 2012; Dundar & Akcayir, 2012), researchers continue to explore the possible consequences that using said technologies may have in academia. The current study aims to address how tablet computers affect the process of learning differently across levels of education. It is proposed that older generations, such as college students, who did not grow up with tablets in the classroom may suffer from the effects of proactive interference when compared to younger students who have been exposed to technologies much more profoundly in their education (e.g. elementary students). If this is so, the current study also proposes a possible intervention that would help students at any educational level overcome this interference in order to integrate tablets into their studies effectively.

This thesis describes the production of Sanctuary, a multiplayer learning game to be played on two tablet computers. Sanctuary's principle innovation is the splitting of the user interface onto two tablets, separating player tools in separate roles and thus providing players with obtainable epistemologies. The designed intention of this interaction is to force communication and interaction and thus metacognition in players. By requiring players to express their beliefs about the game world to one another in language in order to be successful, the design of the game encourages players to formalize their intuitions and experiences. If this approach is successful, then it may be applied further to an increasing range of epistemological frames and better science education. This has the potential to build cooperative, thriving learning communities with shared experiences. The game was tested with a non-random stratified sample of high school students, suggesting new directions for the intervention, and demonstrating the value of co-design.

The compaction process of these excipients was evaluated using the parameters of the compaction equation. The mixtures of four fillers in various ratios were evaluated. These mixtures contained also theophylline as model drug and magnesium stearate as lubricant. The used three-exponential equation was previously developed by doc. RNDr. Milan Řehula, CSc. By using this compaction equation the volume reductions, speeds of volume reductions and consumed energies were calculated and evaluated. The results of this work showed that particular used fillers have different effect on the compaction process flow. That is caused primarily by different behavior of these materials during compaction and by formation of different types of bonds. Also the need of thorough cleaning and drying of compaction aid before compaction was confirmed.

Parameters were monitored depending mainly on the content of the fillers, that were dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose and lactose. Twenty-five prepared mixtures with different ratios of these fillers were evaluated. Flowability was evaluated by three methods stated in Czech Pharmacopoeia 2009 - compressibility index and Hausner ratio, flow through an orifice and angle of repose. Moisture content was evaluated as a weight loss during drying. Mixtures containing dicalcium phosphate and lactose proved more appropriate in terms of flowability, their flow properties are passable. However, according to the moisture content, mixture with microcrystalline cellulose are more preferable.

The thesis evaluates anhydrous and dihydrate calcium hydrogen phosphate from the view point of the tensile strength, disintegration time of tablets depending on the compression force. Two firm products - Anhydrous Emcompress® and Di-Cafos® A 60 are used as anhydrate and Emcompress® is used as dihydrate. A compression force together with lubricants (magnesium stearate, sodium stearyl fumarate) and an addition of microcrystalline cellulose (Vivapur® 102) are the influential factors. In addition to the characteristics of tablets, the energy balance of compression is also evaluated. Used compression forces were 12, 16 and 20 kN. The compression force 12 kN was used for the mixtures containing Vivapur® 102. Total energy of compression, energy for friction and energy accumulated by tablet after compression increased with compression force. The highest values were at Anhydrous Emcompress® , an addition Vivapur® 102 increased these values. There weren't more significant differences among the values of decompression energy. Plasticity decreased with the growing compression force, the highest values were at Anhydrous Emcompress® , Vivapur® 102 increased that. Tensile strength increased with compression force, Emcompress® provided the strongest tablets, Di-Cafos® A 60 provided at least strong tablets. Vivapur...

The thesis evaluates three types of anhydrous β-lactose combined with lubri- cants. The evaluation is made from the standpoint of compressibilty, tensile strength and ejection force, depending on the compression force used. Studied materials are Duralac H, SuperTab 21AN and Lactopress Anhydrous 250. Lubricants used in the concentration of 1% are magnesium stearate, glycerol-dibehenate and poloxamer 188. Compressibility is evaluated by the energy profile of compression. Total energy of compression increases with compression force used and de- pends on the type of anhydrous β-lactose and type of lubricant. Higher plasticity is shown by Duralac H and SuperTab 21AN. Ejection force is lowest in the case of Duralac H for all lubricants. Magnesium stearate appears to be the best lubricant for all types of anhydrous β-lactose. The effect of lubricants on the tensile strength of tablets depends on the compression force used. Highest values of disintegration time provides SuperTab 21AN, Duralac H with glycerol-dibehenate provides lowest values. 1

The theoretical part deals with the characterization and classification of matrix tablets, polymeric carriers (sodium alginate, chitosan and carrageenan) and with the principles of evaluation of rotational, adhesive and oscillational tests performed in the experimental part. The mucin from porcine gastric used as a model substrate for adhesion tests behaves as a viscoelastic solid and its adhesive strength decreases with increasing hydration. Significantly higher adhesive strength was found for chitosan at pH 1.2 and sodium alginate at pH 6.8 compared to the adhesive strength of iota-carrageenan. Ibuprofen is a phenylpropionic acid derivative, which has analgesic, antiinflammatory and antipyretic actions. It is used in the management of mild to moderate pain, inflammatory conditions, peri-articular disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and joint disorders. Tablets, like ibuprofen, can be manufactured by three different processes viz. wet granulation, dry granulation and direct compression. With direct compression, the directly compressible base, along with the active ingredient (ibuprofen) and other suitable excipients, can be compressed directly.

This substance was tested in combination with two lubricants - magnesium stearate and sodium stearyl fumarate, for this purpose two concentrations were used 0.5 % and 1 %. Combination with model drugs was also included. Prosolv ® ODT G2 was also compared with Prosolv® SMCC 50 in the studied properties. The compressibility was evaluated by energy profile of compression process. Tensile strength and disintegration time were tested properties of tablets. The total energy values of tableting materials with Prosolv® ODT G2 were not enough affected by lubricants, though acetylsalicylic acid increased total energy. In the case of Prosolv® SMCC 50 the values of total energy were increased. Plasticity decreased in the case of Prosolv® ODT G2 under the influence of lubricants and drugs. Plasticity values for Prosolv® SMCC 50 were higher and more balanced. Lubricants in the mixtures with Prosolv® ODT G2 caused higher strength, however ascorbic acid decreased tensile strength of tablets. Tablets from the Prosolv® SMCC 50 mixture were significantly stronger, but lubricants decreased tensile strength of tablets. The disintegration time of tablets with Prosolv® ODT G2 was very short. The experimental part deals with viscoelastic characteristics of the mixtures. These characteristics were evaluated by stress relaxation test with maximal compression force 10 kN and dwell time 180 s. Also the tensile strength was evaluated. The highest values of parameters of elasticity A1-3 and plasticity P1-3 were measured in...
