Abstract:
The health of the environment is integral to the health and wellbeing of the people. When the balance between Atua, whenua and tangata is disrupted, desecrated, disturbed or violated, it can have a detrimental impact on these relationships. This research study explored alternative indigenous paradigms for conceptualizing an environmental health framework that would improve the potency and health of all living things. A key question of the research study was to explore how Ngati Kuri sought to strengthen their relationship and connection with the natural world. The Hapu established Te Tai O Marokura health and social services as a vehicle to improve potency: healthy environments, healthy people. The specificity of Ngati Kuri experiences provided a broader context for researching and theorizing about restorative models that utilized traditional knowledge localized to a particular area. Another key question was to examine how Maori cultural values that were embedded within a worldview, could offer insights and constructs for new ways of being and thinking in the modern world. Kaupapa Maori philosophical positioning and theorizing informed the approaches and practices underpinning the study. The key aspects of the methodology were constructed around the tikanga principles of tinorangatiratanga, whakapapa and kaitiakitanga to provide a rationale for the collaboration formed with the Hapu. At the heart of the thesis is the validity given to the collective ownership of indigenous knowledge which challenges the fictional notion of a singular, temporally bound authorship. The thesis reflects the whakawhanaungatanga (reciprocal understanding) relationship between the Tuakana represented by Miriama Kahu and the Teina, Benita Wakefield working collaboratively with the Kaitiaki construct group formed to ensure that the use of indigenous knowledge and its transmission processes had honest transparency. The Tuakana was responsible for providing guidance, wisdom and mentoring to the Teina, the enrolled academic student responsible for producing the written thesis. These innovative collaborative Kaupapa Maori methods and practices in the study have tested the boundaries of conventional doctoral processes, breaking university academic regulations and challenging the western academy in the political nature of collective knowledge production and validity of indigenous knowledge. Qualitative and quantitative processes, approaches and methods were also utilized to inform the study and to ensure reflexivity of research practices. The key findings of the study were: • Improving potency requires a depth of intimacy and connection with all living things that involves a reciprocal understanding of the relationship between Atua, whenua and tangata. • Indigenous knowledge is localized to a spatial area and embedded within a worldview that validates and affirms cultural values and beliefs which continue to have relevance in more contemporary times. • The transformative nature of alternative indigenous paradigms must encompass the totality of creation, humanity and their genealogical and inter-generational linkages to all life. A major contribution of this PhD has been to create new knowledge, ways of thinking and meaning for restoring potency through the environmental health conceptual framework grounded in cultural and spiritual values. The specific focus on Ngati Kuri traditional knowledge authentic to the Hapu and their application, has significantly contributed towards constructing alternative indigenous approaches for meeting the challenges within the modern world.

Abstract:
In the mid-1950s, Japan’s Daihachi Oguchi revived the taiko piece Suwa Ikaduchi, which had traditionally been played at the Nagano Prefecture Suwa Shrine. Until then, the song was played by a single male drummer for ritual at the shrine, a common use of Japanese drums throughout history. Oguchi made changes to the music, creating an ensemble of drums that emulated the Western drum kit, resulting in a new musical genre, which we now refer to as “taiko” in English. Nearly 60 years later, this musical form has spread across the globe with great popularity. The main points of this thesis are to clarify the distinct reference to an historic past required to discuss taiko within Hobsbawm’s theory of invented tradition, to present individuals and communities involved in the formalization of taiko, and to consider what can be learned from the ordinary musician. All of these lead to a better understanding of the process of the formalization, or metamorphosis of taiko, which has not previously been examined. Following the Introduction, Chapters One and Two provide background on both the instruments and the music of taiko. A survey of the inception of pioneer taiko groups in Japan and the United States, where taiko developed simultaneously, can be found in Chapter Four. The preceding Chapter Three presents new research regarding the community where the Suwa Ikaduchi score was discovered, and begins to consider the relationship between the taiko ensemble and the community in which it is formed. This connection between the taiko ensemble and community is reinforced by the story of Eitetsu Hayashi in the fifth chapter, a former member of one of Japan’s first professional taiko groups. Taiko is still developing as a music and a performance art, but we are able to draw conclusions about what is special about taiko in considering the relationship between taiko and community throughout these early years of development. The final chapter tells the stories of two non-professional taiko musicians, one in the United States and one in Japan, concluding that the “traditional” roots of taiko helped to develop a musical genre today with a purpose greater than the music itself. Appendix I includes a copy of the Suwa Ikaduchi drum score, instructions on how to read it using taiko’s system of oral transmission, and a chart explaining the basic rhythmic value of the system. A chronology of events in Japanese American history can be found in Appendix II. Appendix III includes figures of the different kinds of taiko, photos of the Osaka region’s danjiri, and newspaper articles printed during taiko’s formative years.

Abstract:
Abstract The research focuses on rural environments and the questions concerning cultural environment surveys in land use planning. The main purpose of the study is to scrutinize how survey information serves planning. The focus is on pointing out the challenges which can be identified in data management and utilization of information. Main challenges are related to the extendedness and increasing workload of surveys, fragmentation of information and the emphasis put on expertise knowledge. The problems are mainly caused by the lack of well-established practical examples, partly on the hegemony of sector based planning and rationalist-comprehensive tradition in theory of science. Yet the surveys form basically the framework, in which the object or area is been reviewed in the preparation phase of planning. In that sense, the chosen methods in fact-finding also define which qualities primarily come into focus. Single methods or viewpoints and the theories they rely on enlighten the whole only in part. On this basis the aims of the study can be divided roughly in three sections – firstly to the critique of the current practices, secondly, conceptual definition of the structural components of the cultural environment itself, and thirdly, formulation of an integrative approach derived from the above mentioned points of departure. The general understanding of the interaction between man, culture and environment is achieved through phenomenological and existential hermeneutics. The person mapping or exploring the environment with his methods is seen as ”link” between the existing conditions and the future plan. Through that, the overall terms of perception and practice-bound preconditions of human interpretation will come under scrutiny. The study aims to ponder the integration of different approaches and angles, forming a ”toolkit” for environmental analytics and interpretation as a kind of a complexity management. Cultural environment surveys should be developed in a way that they would regard areas as thematic and functional entities instead of a sum of single elements. The research results are presented as a matrix of needs-and-goals -analysis, which forms a framework of assessment for values and desicions. The aim is to clarify the general set-up of land use planning which includes various stakeholders and is multidisciplinary by nature, especially in the context of cultural environments. The needs-and-goals -analysis is based on cultural environment profiling, which includes recognition of values and tolerance towards changes. The purpose of an integrative analysis is to bring out development possibilities and restrictions, together with different development goals. The intensions of different stakeholders should be brought out early enough, in order to prevent disagreements to evolve into conflicts and problems
Tiivistelmä Tässä tutkimuksessa käsitellään maaseudun kulttuuriympäristöjä sekä maankäytön suunnittelun valmisteluvaiheessa tuotettuja kulttuuriympäristöselvityksiä. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, miten suunnittelun tausta-aineistoina toimivat selvitykset ja niiden sisältämä tieto voitaisiin jäsentää palvelemaan paremmin suunnittelua. Tutkimuksessa on pyritty tuomaan esiin haasteita, joita tiedon hallinnassa ja hyödynnettävyydessä suunnittelun pohjaksi on voitu todeta. Pääasiallisesti nämä liittyvät selvitystiedon laajuuteen ja kuormittavuuteen, sektoroitumiseen ja asiantuntijanäkökulman korostumiseen. Tutkimuksessa esille tuodut ongelmat johtuvat osin selkeitten toimintamallien puutteesta, osin sektorisuunnittelun vahvasta taustavaikutuksesta sekä rationalistis-komprehensiivisesta perinteestä tieteenteoriassa. Kaavoituksen valmisteluvaiheen selvitykset muodostavat kuitenkin viitekehyksen, jonka puitteissa suunnittelualuetta tarkastellaan. Tutkimuksessa on pohdittu eri näkökulmien integroitumista eräänlaiseksi organisoiduksi kompleksisuuden hallinnaksi, jonka perustana on havaintojen tekemisen ”välinekokonaisuus” kohteena olevan ympäristön piirteistä.

Abstract:
Puerto Rican people and culture are the result of the often violent contact between the colonizing forces of Spain, the African people they later enslaved and the indigenous population of the island. Over time, the blending of these three diverse peoples, each with their own unique culture and traditions, resulted in a new population currently known as Puerto Rican. Little information is available, however, regarding Taino culture and society prior to European contact, and even less is known about their ongoing contributions to Puerto Rican culture. This thesis brings together accurate information about the indigenous people of Boriquen. It attempts to correct distortions and untruths about Taino culture, providing alternative interpretations and giving recognition to the Taino legacy which remains a part of Puerto Rican culture today.

Abstract:

Abstract: This research investigated the meanings of taiko at the Instituto Cultural Nipo Brasileiro de Campinas (ICNBC). Taiko is a musical, percussive, bodily and collective practice, which uses the Japanese drums (taiko) as main instruments. The ICNBC is an association for the social gathering of Japanese descendants, through various activities, including what the native called as "cultural activities" (designating those originated in Japan) among which taiko figured prominently, at the moment of this research. The taiko group "Wadaiko Tsubame Nipo Campinas" was formed by young people engaged in social activities that occurred beyond this practice, including the participation in the age groups kodomo-kai (group of children), junia-kai (group of teenagers) and seinen-kai (group of young adults), in community events, in other "cultural" and sports activities, among other areas. Whereupon this broad and ethnically-centered participation, the research focused on those aspects which constitute, on the one hand, the belonging and, on the other, the autonomy of the practice in relation to the community context. With this approach, meanings such as "discipline", "union" and "leadership" were described in their broad and specific aspects, giving rise to discussions of "identity", "hybridization", "ownership", "sociation" and "sociability".

Abstract:
Tiivistelmä. Riitatilanteet ovat arkipäiväinen osa lasten välisiä suhteita. Lapset ratkaisevat riitatilanteita eri tavoin ja tarvitsevat niiden ratkaisemiseen usein aikuisen apua. Riitatilanteiden selvittämistä harjoitellaan arjen eri tilanteissa, jossa lastentarhanopettaja on merkittävässä roolissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää lastentarhanopettajien käsityksiä 5–6-vuotiaiden lasten välisistä riitatilanteista. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa halutaan selvittää millaisia käsityksiä lastentarhanopettajilla on omista keinoista tukea riitatilanteita. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena, fenomenografisena tutkimuksena. Aineiston analyysissa on käytetty soveltuvin osin fenomenografista analyysimenetelmää. Aineisto kerättiin haastattelun avulla. Haastatteluun osallistui 4 lastentarhanopettajaa. Lastentarhanopettajat käsittivät lasten riitatilanteet tavallisina, vertaissuhteessa tapahtuvana ilmiönä, joiden syntymiseen vaikuttaa lapsen sosiaalisten taitojen kehittyneisyys.

Paris 3, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA030124.

Full text
Abstract:
The considerable recourse to intertextuality enables Mexican Paco Ignacio Taibo II to weave around his detective novels a web of eclectic references which main objective is obviously to justify claiming the literariness to a genre often confined to the fringes of literature. The use of reference takes on multiple stylistic functions or narratives which accredit the fiction with the inexorable presence of the literary in the heart of even everyday life, endowing the diegesis with a two-tiered system of reference. The intertextual reprocessing, parallel to that of the great historical revolutionary myths, promotes heroic characters taken from popular literature. They substitute political figures as the inspiring force behind committed individual behaviour and allegories to values of a struggling community. These duly mythicized figures finally integrate into a complex secular Pantheon which is put forward as a model by the writer not only to his characters but also to his readers

From karate to taido : sport, martial art or new lifestyle? The present inquiry will be partly concerned with going back to sources, there to trace the various choices made at given times that have led down various paths through the socio-historical evolution of the pursuit in question thereby affecting its lines of practice. Like all human pursuits, karate is in fact a focal point for various vested interests. At the same time, the interplay of eastern and western cultures should also enable the foundations - the essential principles that ostensibly bring mankind to maturity to be pinpointed and the possible meaning of a truly body-based culture to be elucidated. More precisely, we shall endeavour to provide at least partial answers to a number of basic questions. - why practise an art born of another culture at another period in time? - how legitimate, relevant and meaningful is the practise of karate in today's society? - what kind of personnal shortcoming is karate there to remedy? - what evils do we palliate by the repetition of the self-same gestures over many years?

This study aims to comprehend the concept of Ma, inherent in the japanese culture, and to identify possible spaces that could characterize this concept in Tadao Ando’s architectural production, through the study about this culture and from different approaches about Ma, as said by Tadao Ando (2000): Japanese architects, as Ito Yotaro, Kiwari - Module of traditional Japanese Architecture, 1961;Isozaki Arata, Ma – nijunen ato no kikanten, (MA – Twenty Years On) and Kenmochi Takehiko, use the term Ma to indicate physical space and also a kind of space-time. The spatiality of Ma seems to be of a fragile visualization, but eminently communicative, when invites not only to the perceptive participation of human being that lives the spatiality, but also your memory and your thought, through the relationship between man, society and culture. (MICHIKO, 2007: p. 84). The Japanese sense of Ma is not something created by a composition of elements, it is something that takes place in the imaginary of human being as he experience the architectural void created by the composition of these elements. The existence of an exclusive concept of the eastern culture and intrinsic of various artistic genders instigated the inquiry about this theme. From the western theories that assisted the understanding of the architectural void, this dissertation seeks to comprehend the concept of Ma and approximate these different cultures. With this objective of properly comprehend the concept of Ma in architecture and study it through the scientific method, different works of the contemporary architect Tadao Ando were studied in order to exemplify possible spatialities of Ma present in these works.

Abstract:

Montpellier 3, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003MON30043.

Full text
Abstract:
The crime novel is the imaginary illustration of a constant victorious justice in its fight against crime and its very relative success in Mexico proves that mexican society cannot be the gathering place of such an ideology. Nevertheless, P. I. Taibo II managed, contrary to historical logic, to reconcile the genre with the country. Through Cosa Fácil, La vida misma and Cuatro manos, an axiological jamming, better suited to collective mexican mentalities, gradually replaces crime novel manicheanism. At the same time, the enigma, following the sterilisation course of the investigation theme, disappears from plots. This phenomenon takes place when the enigmatic structure is getting more intricated. Therefore, Cuatro manos represents the defeat of the justice and the structural quintessence of the enigma. It is an attempt to litterary appropriateness and reorganisation of the destructured vision resulting from postmodern communicational abundance

Abstract:
Definitions and boundaries of race and ethnicity are socially constructed. They are malleable inventions created by the negotiation of ascribed ideas from outside groups and asserted notions from the inside group's membership. The revitalization of Taíno identity and culture within the Puerto Rican and related communities is a classic case example of this negotiation. Although objective conditions exist to recognize the descendants of these Caribbean aboriginals as an identifiable group, their identities are contested and sometimes ridiculed. Even though Taíno heritage is accepted as an essential root of Puerto Rico's cultural and biological make-up, this group has been classified as extinct since the early 16th century. This thesis analyzes the official newsletters of the Taíno Nation of the Antilles--one of the leading organizations working for revitalization. The content of this material culture was dissected and organized into rhetorical categories in order to reveal patterns of endogamic assertions of race and ethnicity. This thesis will provide a descriptive analysis of the Taíno Nation's rhetorical process of convincing the world that they do in fact exist.

Kusakabe, Madoka. "Sata Ineko and Hirabayashi Taiko: The Café and Jokyû as a Stage for Social Criticism." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12084.

Abstract:
xii, 251 p.
Sedimentations of transformations and experiences empowered the 20th century writers Sata Ineko and Hirabayashi Taiko as writers. Because of their mutual belief in the early principles of the proletarian literary movement--writing the reality of the working class from their perspectives--both produced works centered on daily life. In not only delineating but also examining the daily occurrences, their stories and critiques acutely exposed the issues, the conditions, and the exploitation of the working class under capitalism, particularly the unfair and unreasonable treatment of women and women workers under the patriarchal slogan "Good Wives and Wise Mothers" and the discrimination of women workers and writers even within the proletarian movement. The café proved the best site for both to offer keen analyses. Materializing the actual working experiences of jokyû (café waitresses), they exposed the superficiality of Japanese modernity in the 1920s and 30s, the suppression and oppression of women under patriarchy, commodification and exploitation of working women under capitalism, and the ultimate consequences--social myopia and deterioration of human life. While the café was for jokyû a site of exploration and challenge by overturning the dominant power hierarchy practiced in society, for Sata and Hirabayashi, writing about the café challenged the prejudice and confinement of existing categorizations such as "women," "women workers," " jokyû ," "women writers," and "proletarian writers." Both Sata and Hirabayashi treated the café and jokyû as realistic and multifaceted. To strengthen this realism, both writers relied on their own corporeal experiences and sensations, supporting honest illustrations of power dynamics and the dual-system oppression of women at play within and beyond the café environment. Both acknowledged the body as a site of complication and possibility. Through their acknowledgments beyond the surface inscriptions that restrict and limit who and what lies within, both Sata and Hirabayashi contended that the body was an interactive and potentially productive catalyst for change. For them, the corporeal experience proved more effective for gaining consciousness, obtaining class-consciousness, and eventually achieving ideological resolution than through doctrinal readings and teachings.

Abstract:
My thesis seeks to answer the broad questions: can early foragers alter marine resources in island settings and can archaeological data provide insights into these changes. These questions highlight two important issues. The first issue reflects the common belief that small-scale societies did not affect their environments. The second issue centers on growing concern over the collapse of fisheries across the globe. To answer these questions, I use fish bones recovered from an archaeological site located in Belmont, Jamaica near the Bluefields Bay marine sanctuary. The Bluefields Bay site dates to the late Taíno occupation of Jamaica. The name Taíno refers to the peoples who greeted Columbus. I conduct my analyses through the identification of the faunal bones to lowest taxonomic level, and apply the theoretical tool known as resource depression to detect declines in the relative abundance of large-bodied fishes, reductions in fish body size, and changes to fish community composition. I found significant changes in body size and diversity of fishes through time, pointing to shifts in the marine ecosystem due to human exploitation that occurred nearly a thousand years ago.

Abstract:
This study proposes a reading of architectural poetics on the works of Luis Barragán, Alvaro Siza and Tadao Ando, departing from the link that each of them establish on the binomal construction-nature. Considering among their productions the emblematic projects of such a relationship, we can find pure architectonic places (HUET, 1979) that restore the ontological character of the discipline, evoking, through this last frontier of architecture, universal issues of the human existence. In the dialogue they propose between place and modern synthesis, those \"site constructions\" thus reveal rather than critic positions, but basic and primordial disquietudes - or obsessions - from their creators. Those disquietudes become concrete in the phenomenological experience of the place, in the very same \"dematerialization\" of architecture.Barragán, in Los Clubes (1964-1968) - Cuadra San Cristóbal and Fuente de los Amantes -, imposes sharp contrasts to the landscape to then dissolve them in a \"fantastic reality\" that consummates the unlikely match between catholic faith and erotic desire; in Leça da Palmeira Swimming Pool, Siza tells, by a \"technical speech\", the return of Man towards Nature, in a liturgic procedure that undoes, between the city and the beach, the concrete wall into sand and stone; on the Water Temple, Tadao Ando establishes a path from the profane towards the sacred - from the occidental reasoning to the oriental spirituality -, through the symbolic transmutation of the form along radically available spaces (Ma). Each chapter individually circumscribes one architect and his work through three sequential proxies: it begins with the impressions obtained in site visits; then goes through a genealogy of the imagination and the formation of the language; and closes the circle returning to the project, aproached through the drawings and data collected during the research. The goal then, is to create a bridge between the project intentions and the expression of the work, to identify, along this path, the poetic architectural resources that were used. In the conclusion, horizontal crossings are created between different expressions of those resources on the constructions - pathway, wall, water, light etc. - as a way to try to contribute to the poetic lexicon of the discipline.

Abstract:

Preschoolers express their needs through action. Children at this age tend to lose their concentration and get frustrated easily. The research shows, "Taiko activity" helps to children to concentrate and focus on their energy throughout the process. Through Taiko, children establish the internal sense of order, improve temperament ( chen xin-yi,2012). Because of the concentration that it takes to practice strike posture, memorize the beats, and observation of coordination between the individual and others, children are able to practice through repetition and focus on one thing which helps to achieve overall team efforts. This research focus on how "Taiko Activities" affect preschoolers’ attention. We divided 18 preschoolers from a private school in Kaohsiung into two groups, Nine children as the experimental group, and the other nine as the control group. Every morning they practice 30 minutes of "Taiko Activities". The "Taiko Activities" experiment is divided into two phases for a total of 16 weeks. We use neuropsychological test software combines with interviews for final analysis. The results of this study indicated that "Taiko activity" can effectively improve these preschoolers’ performance of alertness and flexibility attention on the test. Both groups performed better than before they started "Taiko Activities". "Taiko Activities" can improve preschoolers’ attention and performance.

Are thereby undertaken thorough inquiries, firstly to the Japanese cultural universe: questioning its origins; philosophy, religion and arts, cementing the propositions of thought, actions and motivations of its people and, subsequently, to the architectural universe: analyzing the tea house, temples and gardens, featuring the design of space as intrinsic element of traditional Japanese fundamentals. The last considered theme unites a methodical examination to the life of Tadao Ando, describing his steps and mentioning his labor tribute to the contemporary architecture, demonstrated by the genesis of several paradigmatic works that masterfully perpetuated in construction. It will also be defended and demonstrated that the traditional Japanese principles prevail in his architectural legacy.

The relationship between sensory integration with the Taiko course and practices before and after tests for body movement training. The child's sensory integration function was measured and the total scores of the nine items were analyzed by Excel: 一、There is a significant difference between the Taigu activity and the total score between the Pre-test and post-tests. 二、It is significant correlation between the integrated motion tests on both sides of the body and the total score. 三、Taiko activities and body movements have a mutual relationship. 四、There is a significant correlation between the Taiko activity and the child's sensory integration test. According to these above facts and related documents, we suggest that the parents don’t need to let the children to read, write and arithmetic too early. Rather than let the children to develop its sensory integration sense organs function completely with play, then could make the children to study better and happier.
