Abstract:
Based on ethnographic research data from Curitiba\'s tailors, this work explores the skills and techniques associated with the tailoring process, with the goal of understanding to understand how gestures, materials and work tools interact with each other producing not only clothes, but also the tailors themselves and the bodies of their respective clients. Reflection is devoted on the investigation of these practices as processes of knowledge production, and is in tune with the propositions that rethink the relationship between man and matter. The central axis of observation follows the suggestion of Tim Ingold (2013) that doing is a process of correspondence between the maker and material, not imposition or application of prior knowledge. It is suggested that the client\'s body and the tailor\'s capabilities are modeled by tailor-made clothing in the compromises established between suits, tailors and clients. In the end, it is intended to contribute to the understanding of the recent transformations of this field of work, especially with regard to the emergence of new ways of practicing tailoring.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the roles played by craft organisations or 'guilds' in medieval urban society through a case study of the tailors of London in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Using the records of the City and of the guilds themselves, including the important early records of the Tailors, this study seeks to answer important questions about the nature of these organisations and the impact which they had upon urban society. Far from being the mere 'agents' of municipal governments, craft guilds often performed important and constructive functions on behalf of the artisans themselves. The first two chapters examine the extent to which voluntarism characterized the activities of many of these associations: the guild of London tailors, though unusual in the scale and scope of its spiritual and charitable provision, embodied widely shared principles of association which were not articulated solely through parish guilds. Subsequent chapters look at the ways in which the Tailors' guild expressed and articulated other concerns of their members and those outside the ruling guild: in the sphere of City politics, for instance, the Tailors came to represent the aspirations of many poorer citizens through their struggle for civic prominence. Likewise, in the sphere of economic regulation, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which the Tailors' guild, among others, was able to introduce flexible and pragmatic policies of enforcement, based upon the shared interests of those inside and outside the decision-making groups. The final section of the thesis then examines more closely the limitations of impressions of economic structures derived purely from guild statutes. First, the nature of apprenticeship and servanthood in medieval London is examined with particular emphasis upon the differing perceptions of these 'life-cycle institutions' by all concerned. Secondly, a systematic analysis of the structure of the tailoring industry in London is carried out and explores the remarkable diversity of economic life in the capital.

Taylor, Edward Paul. "The representations of millers, tailors, and weavers in popular print, c. 1500 to c. 1700." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/29283.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a method for identifying resonant cultural phenomena and uses it to identify themes in the representations of millers, tailors, and weavers in early modern English proverbs, jests, and ballads. It then examines whether these stereotypes appear in the records of defamation and abusive language from four different contemporary courts. It argues that all three trades were associated with habitual occupational dishonesty, that millers had a reputation for super-sexuality, and that tailors were considered to be poor and inferior to other men. However, it also argues that these stereotypes were conditioned by generic characteristics of proverbs, jests, and ballads and therefore that stereotypes should be assessed within and across different media. Finally, it argues that the dishonesty, super-sexuality, and inferiority associated with millers, tailors, and weavers suggest that perceived moral character played a more important role in the creation of stereotypes than perceived economic or social position, political or religious allegiance, or ethnic or regional background.

Abstract:
Background Understanding the benefits from the environment of municipally-owned energy firms in Sweden, through the perspective of the network theory, the triple helix model and knowledge transfer. Aim To construct a model describing the resources flowing within the network of relationships within the specific context of operations. Methodology The study is centred on a case company where two specific departments are put in focus: the energy recovery department and the business development. The case study aims to be descriptive, according to the data collected from interviews of relevant respondents. Findings - The benefits derived from a collaboration with a knowledge centre is the legitimate creation of exploitable innovation for the firm, as well as the creation/improvement of hybrid platforms where mobility of personnel is seen as a central communication factor. - When it comes to the income generating activities the main benefits that arose within the collaboration was the creation of opportunities for growth and business networks as such.- Power on influencing the context generates policies and favourable network oriented circumstances.

Abstract:
In November 1653, a vessel arrived in the harbour town of Gothenburg, on the west coast of the Protestant monarchy of Sweden. Aboard the ship was the newly appointed English Ambassador Extraordinary, Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675); jurist, Puritan and avid diary keeper. In his journal, Whitelocke noted down the entirety of what he was to experience during his stay in Sweden. From the heaps of papers he produced over his lifetime, he later edited this particular record under the title Journal of the Swedish Embassy. Spanning between 1653 and 1654, the pages of the journal contains information of the most mundane kind, as well as eye witness accounts of what must be recognised as a very interesting part of European history. More so, it reveals Whitelocke’s views on the political questions of his time, mainly presented through conversations with important actors from Swedish society, such as Queen Christina, Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna, and the Archbishop of Uppsala, Johannes Canuti Lenaeus. In the eyes of the Swedes, Whitelocke became a representative not only of the new Commonwealth of England, but of the new ideas that had formed the basis of its government. As such, he was often made to explain the conduct of his country men, as well as defend the recent events in England. Thus, through these recorded exchanges, an image of Whitelocke´s representation and of his views regarding the changes in England emerges from the pages. This Masters Thesis will analyse this image, as well as discuss Whitelocke’s political views, both practical and ideological, at the time of his embassy to Sweden.

Finlay, Andrew Robert. "Trade unionism and sectarianism among Derry shirt workers 1920-1968 : with special reference to the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1989. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317879/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem at the heart of this study is: to what extent and in what ways was the development of trade unionism in the Derry shirt industry influenced by sectarianism? This problem and my approach to it were elaborated in contradistinction to existing theories of trade unionism in Northern Ireland. According to the main theory, developed most cogently within traditional Irish Marxism, trade unionism was thwarted by sectarianism. I suggest that this theory has more to do with the reductionist and evolutionist assumptions of its authors than with social reality and argue that the relationship between trade unionism and sectarianism is better understood with an approach in which it is recognised that both of these institutions are constituted through the actions of concrete individuals who are themselves constituted by society, and in which priority is given to the meanings which individuals ascribe to their actions and predicaments. My study is based on interviews with a sample of retired union officials and activists. My respondents were keenly aware of the Catholic-Protestant dichotomy, but, contrary to what traditional Irish Marxists would lead one to expect, they did not regard sectarianism as a significant problem until the 1950s. My analysis of union growth and structure 1920-1952 largely confirmed this view: union densities compared favourably with clothing workers in Britain, and the main factors underlying fluctuations in membership were more or less the same as elsewhere in Britain. Conflict between Protestant and Catholic shirtmakers only became a problem as a result of inter-union rivalry which followed the formation of a breakaway union in 1952. Sectarian conflict was activated by a specifically trade union power struggle, not vice versa, Thus, this study does not merely contradict the prevailing view of the relationship between trade unionism and sectarianism - it inverts it.

For each semester in the second quarter of Eighteenth century, the City Council of Mariana had been summoning craftsmen to get their mercantile licenses, regulating their manual specialties due the extensive Termo de Mariana. Between the years of 1735 and 1750, the tailoring and tailors were the most license pleading craft and artisans in the City Council of Mariana. Such notoriety has motivated the present dissertation entitled Using the tailor’s craft: The tailoring and the tailors of the Termo de Mariana (1735 – 1750). The systematization and analysis of this source have allowed the elaboration of a nominative list containing 323 tailors who requested one or more mercantile licenses between the years of 1735 and 1750 in order to exercise craft specialized in tailoring at some places of the Termo de Mariana. Based on that, the present dissertation seeks to comprehend the labor universe of this mechanical specialty and its agents in a restrict time-space analysis by taking data from City Council documents. Altogether, the tailors were historical subjects qualified in crafting clothes, acting upon a vivacious and multifaceted socioeconomic conjecture, in which they wore the ordinary and luxurious necessities of a society of distinctions and appearances.

Abstract:
This thesis tells the stories of five Oregon women who transcended the customary roles of their era. Active during the waning years of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, each woman made a difference in the world around them. Their stories have either not been told or just given a passing glance. These tales are important because they inform us about our society on the cusp of the twentieth century. Hattie Crawford Redmond was the daughter of a freed slave who devoted herself to the fight for women's suffrage. Minnie Mossman Hill was the first woman steamboat pilot west of the Mississippi. Mary Francis Isom was a local librarian who went to France to deliver books to American soldiers. Ann and May Shogren were sisters who brought high fashion to Portland and defied the gender and social rules in both their business and personal lives. These women were not the only ones who accomplished extraordinary things during their lives. They are a tiny sample of Oregon women who pushed beyond discrimination, hardship and gender limits to earn their place in Oregon's history.

Ramiah, Vernon. "Tailored glycopolymers." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1485.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Chemistry and Polymer Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The synthesis of glycopolymers with various comonomers as prepared via the RAFT process is investigated. The macro-RAFT agent poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose) (PMAlpGlc) was prepared by polymerization of the glycomonomer with cumyl phenyl dithioacetate as the chain transfer agent. Chain extension with styrene or methyl acrylate or acrylic acid afforded novel diblock copolymers, (PMAlGlc-b-poly[styrene] or PMAGlc-b-poly[methyl acrylate] or PMAlGlc-b-poly[acrylic acid]), with predetermined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The poly(acrylic acid) based glycopolymer was used to modify the surface of CaCO3, forming what will be referred to as a ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particle. This surface modifying effect was evaluated in depth; a schematic study of the effect of reaction temperature, pH, reaction time and glycopolymer concentration on CaCO3 crystallization was carried out. The analytical techniques Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to verify that these ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particles have an increased adherence to cellulose compared to ‘non sugar-coated’ particles. A series of polymer configurations comprising various ratios of glycomoiety to poly(acrylic acid) was prepared. The effect of this polymer series on CaCO3 crystallization was evaluated and the ideal polymer configuration and its optimum synthesis conditions (i.e. reaction pH, temperature, time and polymer concentration) that gave maximum adherence of the ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particle onto cellulose were identified. The ability of these poly(acrylic acid) based glycopolymers to increase the interaction between CaCO3 and cellulose was then evaluated. This was done by simply mixing all three substrates, i.e. glycopolymer, cellulose and CaCO3 together. Analysis by TGA, SEM and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) revealed both the ideal polymer configuration that favoured increased adherence of the CaCO3 to cellulose and the optimum reaction conditions required for application and testing. In addition to studying the interaction between cellulose and CaCO3, the amphiphilic nature of the glycopolymers was determined. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirmed that coreshell particles were prepared and that these particles are solvent exchangeable (in the case of styrene and methyl acrylate glyco-blocks) or pH exchangeable (in the case of acrylic acid glyco-blocks).

Abstract:
Health care organisations are extremely complex because they consist of heterogeneous groups of people (clinical professions, patients, managers), use advanced technology (medical devices and patient record systems), and apply many organisational and clinical routines. When introducing Electronic Patient Record systems (EPR) in health care organisations, all these aspects get affected. Using a sociotechnical perspective is necessary in order to get a "successful" EPR usage. The aim of my PhD studies is to provide health care organisations with knowledge and insights into how they can improve their organisation and practice in relation to usage of EPR systems. In my research I have used a grounded theory methodology for studying, analysing and reflecting on how electronic patient record systems are used by professionals in their practice. Studies have been conducted during a 2.5 years collaborative research project. Within the studied health care organisation there are differing opinions if an EPR system is mainly a technical system or a tool to support the clinical organisation. This conceptual division leads to an uncertainty in who is responsible for the proper function of the EPR system and have a major effect for the clinicians in their clinical practice. During the research seven potential problems areas, mandate, usability, education, participation, improvements, support and evaluation have been identified as crucial for the health care organisation to manage to achieve an effective EPR usage. The main results are 1) The health care organisation needs to establish a problem-solving strategy that questions the reasons behind the problems occurred, 2) The different stakeholder groups need to interact, create a better understanding for each other's perspective and agree on the same goal for the EPR system, 3) The clinical organisation needs help to improve their clinical practice in relation to the EPR system, 4) The EPR deployment and usage affect the clinicians in different ways. Their attitude towards the EPR system is dependent on the usability of the EPR system, the deployment process, their experience of participation, education, support and possibilities to improve the system.

Abstract:
Tailored graph ensembles are a developing bridge between statistical mechanics and biological networks. In this thesis, this concept is used to generate a suite of rigorous mathematical tools to quantify and compare the topology of cellular signalling networks. Earlier published results to quantify the entropy of constrained random graph ensembles are extended by looking at constraints relating to directed graphs, bipartite graphs, neighbourhood compositions and generalised degrees. To incorporate constraints relating to the average number of short loops, a number of innovative techniques are reviewed and extended, moving the analysis beyond the usual tree-like assumption. The generation of unbiased sample networks under some of these new constraints is studied. A series of illustrations of how these concepts may be applied to systems biology are developed. Topological observables are obtained from real biological networks and the entropy of the associated random graph ensemble is calculated. Certain studies on over-represented motifs are replicated and the influence of the choice of null model is considered. The correlation between the topological role of each protein and its lethality is studied in yeast. Throughout, this document aims to promote looking at a network as a realisation satisfying certain constraints rather than just as a list of nodes and edges. This may initially seem to be an abstract approach, but it is in fact a more natural viewpoint within which to consider many fundamental questions regarding the origin, function and design of observed real networks.

Abstract:
Geopolymers are synthetic materials formed by alkali-activation of aluminosilicate particles. They have attracted increasing attention as sustainable materials, being obtained from different raw materials, including industrial by-products, and by production processes at low temperature. Thanks to the good properties showed by these materials (thermal stability, fire-resistance, etc.), and the intrinsic mesoporosity, geopolymers have been studied as new materials for applications in many industrially relevant fields. To achieve full advantage of their porous structure, it is necessary to control its formation. The geopolymer production process in aqueous medium allows to tailor the porosity from nanometric to millimetric range since water acts as pore former. Moreover, ultra-macroporosity may be induced in the materials exploiting different techniques, commonly used for the production of porous ceramics, determining the possibility to obtain materials with different architectures, pore size and shape, etc. Hierarchical pore systems, where the mesopores of the geopolymer skeletal materials are directly connected to macro- and finally to ultra-macropores, may be constructed in this way. The main goal of this research project was to investigate the use of different process techniques applied to geopolymer matrices to generate porous structures characterized by peculiar porosities able to determine specific properties and functionalize the materials. In detail, the porosity was induced by direct foaming or addition of lightweight aggregates. Furthermore, geopolymers with main unidirectional anisotropic macropores were produced, for the first time, using a freeze-casting technique. All the materials produced were deeply investigated to optimize the production processes and evaluate the final properties, many of which arising from the intrinsic and induced porosity generated, in order to address the materials for potential applications as, for example, thermal insulating panels or heat transfer devices.

Munro, Ian. "Partnering online : developing a value framework for e-tailers." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/7713.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 124-128.
This research aims to develop a framework within which to analyse and discuss the "e-tailing partnership" - a "horizontal" partnership model in which e-taiIers promote, sell and even bundle one another’s goods in a mutually beneficial partnership. At the core of the framework is the concept of "value". The research draws on marketing theory to structure value into a "value block" which enables firms to quantify gains or losses in e-tailing projects. The paper discusses e-tailing partnerships within the value block framework. The partnership contract and the distribution of value between partners are both analysed. Design requirements for theoretical partnering systems are deduced and reported. Risks and implications for related systems are considered. Finally, three commercial software candidates are empirically evaluated in terms of the partnership models presented. From this research it is apparent that the e-tailing partnership is worth serious contemplation and may prove to be a significant business model for firms in the New Internet Economy.

Abstract:
Tailored is a graphic design experiment which explores clothing as communication. It tells the story of my life through my body and the “designed” skirts I wear. Clothing is a visual representation of who we are and what we do. Through Tailored I am pushing the boundaries of how people read what I wear. I have designed and made skirts that explicitly define (through words, fabric and image) the six main compartments of my life. This paper records and explores the visual experiences I create for those around me and myself. Tailored is a personal investigation of how clothing speaks about me through personally designed garments.

Wang, Yingli. "Electronic marketplaces for tailored logistics." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55768/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last two decades, the role of e-business as a fundamental element that links organisations of the supply chain into a unified and coordinated system has been increasingly recognised in the literature. Recent technological advances enable a proliferation of B2B e-business systems in supporting interorganisational e-business integration, but also create more complexities for organisations in determining what form of electronic linkage and relationship configurations should be forged with what kind of business partner(s). At the same time, as customers become more demanding, there is a trend towards providing tailored logistics provisions in order to satisfy different customers' needs. Consequently, careful design of information flows within and between the organizations is required. In view of the aforementioned, there is need for a design of an overall e-business architecture which governs and specifies the different inter-organisation information coordinate and control (ICC) mechanisms for different logistics scenarios, referred to here as a B2B e-business reference architecture (ERA). Historically this research area has not received due attention from researchers or practitioners. Therefore, the primary aim of this thesis is to develop such an ERA and substantiate it through empirical research, focusing its application on an emerging e-business model termed an Electronic Logistics Marketplaces (ELM). The first part of this research is analytical, developing the B2B ERA through the synthesis of literature and the use of secondary case examples. Four architectures are proposed with detailed characterisation: Centralised Market, Traditional Hierarchical Coordination. Modified Hierarchical Coordination, and Heterarchical Network. The second part of the research is empirical, since it validates the conceptual model developed through six case studies. It shows that one size does not fit all, and there should be different architectures for different logistics scenarios. The study also establishes a fundamental understanding of closed ELMs which have not been studied in-depth and systematically. Through analysis of three key elements, namely, technology, collaboration and process, the likely operational models and the relationship between ELMs and tailored logistics are established. Reasons for using closed ELMs are also identified through the exploration of motives, barriers, costs and benefits. A major case study is conducted to investigate the Heterarchical Network type of ELM, later after being termed as 'collaborative ELM'. Reasons for the formation of this type of ELM, and the impact it brings to the supply chain are examined in detail, providing significant insights considering its rarity and novelty in practice. Finally the thesis summarises the research findings and their practical implications are discussed. Study limitations are acknowledged and possible future research directions are suggested.

Edlin, Christopher David. "Tailored ligands for zinc coordination." Thesis, Durham University, 1998. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4787/.

Full text
Abstract:
Selective coordination to zinc over other members of the first row transition metal series is important for the commercial application of lipophilic ligands for the hydrometallurgic recovery of the metal. In order to achieve selectivity for zinc(n) over other ions, particularly copper(II) and iron(III), ligands have to be designed which take advantage of zinc's preferred tetrahedral coordination geometry and the borderline donor atom preference of the metal. With such ligands in mind, three new classes of ligand system have been designed and synthesised based on the benzimidazole, quinoline and pyridine ring systems with appended phosphinic and thiophosphinic acid anionic donor groups. Benzimidazole ligands which bind zinc in a 2:1 manner in solution have been made and their complexation ability assessed by ESMS, (^31)p NMR, liquid-liquid extraction, fluorescence and UV absorption spectroscopic methods. A bisbenzimidazole ligand with a C(_3) spacer in the 2,2' position was synthesised and shown to bind zinc initially in a 2:1 manner, at low metal concentrations, and predominantiy as a 1:1 species at higher metal concentrations. The formation constant for the ML complex was shown to be logK(_ML)=5 by analysis of the NMR titration curve, which was in close agreement with the value obtained from liquid-liquid extraction studies. A directly linked 2,2'- bisbenziraidazole system was also synthesised as an extension to previous work, however isolation of the target ligand proved to be difficult due to the insolubility of the desired bis-acid.8-(Quinolinyl)phenylphosphinic acid and 8-(2-metiiylquinolinyl)phenylphosphinic acid were also synthesised and their solution complexation behaviour studied in detail. The unsubstituted ligand appeared to form 1:1 complexes with zinc at all the metal concentrations studied, and the absence of the methyl substituent does not inhibit coordination to the ferric ion. In contrast the metiiyl substituted ligand initially forms a 2:1 L:M complex, and 1:1 complexes at higher metal concentrations. The initial ML(_2) complex probably involves coordination of two of the phosphinic acid moieties. Three pyridyl derived ligand systems were also synthesised varying the bulk of the C-6 substituent and the effect of the phosphinic versus the thiophosphinic acid moiety towards zinc coordination was examined. Both of the methyl appended ligands were shown to bind zinc in a 2:1 manner, with the thiophosphinic acid exhibiting a greater avidity for zinc. In contrast, the unsubstituted ligand predominantly forms 1:1 complexes at all metal concentrations.

Tamami, Mana. "Tailored Architectures of Ammonium Ionenes." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35933.

Full text
Abstract:
The synthesis and characterization of a variety of ammonium ionenes from water-soluble coatings to high-performance elastomers are discussed. Water-soluble random copolymer ionenes were synthesized using the Menshutkin reaction from 1,12-dibromododecane, N,N,Nâ ²,Nâ ²-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine, and 1,12-bis(N,N-dimethylamino)dodecane. The absolute molecular weights were determined for the first time using a multiangle laser light scattering detector in aqueous size exclusion chromatography and the weight-average molecular weights of these ionenes were in the range of 17,000-20,000 g/mol. Charge density increased with increasing molar ratio of N,N,Nâ ²,Nâ ²-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine and the glass transition temperature (Tg) increased from 69 °C to 90 °C as the charge density increased. Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) showed isotropic scattering patterns for these ionenes. A limited study on cytotoxicity of these ionenes showed no direct correlation between charge density and cell viability for human brain microvascular endothelial cell line. A series of low hard segment (HS) content, poly(propylene glycol) (PPG)-based ammonium ionenes were synthesized using a Menshutkin reaction from bromine end-capped PPG oligomers (prepared using acid-chloride reactions) and N,N,Nâ ²,Nâ ²-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine. Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, titration analyses, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, confirmed the difunctionality of bromine end-capped PPG oligomers. Thermal analysis revealed Tgâ s of -60 °C, comparable to pure PPG, using differential scanning calorimetery (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirming microphase separation, and an onset of degradation (Td) at 240 °C. Synthesis of a series of random block copolymer ammonium ionenes with an aliphatic 1,12-dibromododecane as part of the hard segment (33 wt% HS) enhanced film formation and supported microphase separation property. The Td and Tg did not change compared to PPG-ionenes with lower HS content. DMA and tensile testing demonstrated the influence of soft segment (SS) molecular weight and hard segment (HS) content on the mechanical properties of segmented ammonium ionenes. DMA showed the onset of flow, ranging from 100-140 ºC for 1K and 2K g/mol PPG-based ionenes respectively. SAXS revealed a Bragg distance scaled with soft segment molecular weight and ranged from 6.6 to 23.4 nm for 1K to 4K g/mol PPG-based ionenes, respectively.

An investigation of the salt-responsive solubility property of random block copolymer PPG-ionenes revealed a dependence on PPG molecular weight. The 1K g/mol PPG-based ionenes with a hydrophilic (HPL)/hydrophobic (HPB) value ranging from one to three showed solubility in both water and one wt% NaCl aqueous solutions. The 2K g/mol PPG-based ionenes containing HPL/HPB value of two to 15 showed cloudy dispersions in water and one wt% NaCl solutions. The 4K g/mol PPG-based ionenes possessed the salt-responsive character; 4K g/mol PPG-based ionenes with HPL/HPB values of one to 12 showed milky dispersions in water, suspended particles in one wt% NaCl solutions and film precipitation at a HPL/HPB molar ratio of 19.

ABSTRACT

Much of the content of modern day language didactics can accomplish a lot when it comes to details and specific areas of learning, but rather seldom does it give a larger picture that can serve as a base to explore new territory and develop another way of teaching and learning.

The aim of this thesis is to develop a practical concept that enfolds some of these theories and ideas.

Instead of a focus on methodology this thesis attracts attention to the roles of both teachers and students as well as the use of multiple methodology use because of the goal which is individualised education.

Another issue is the mentality of the learner with the polyglot as the model for an efficient language learner. These ideas affect the content of the tool for investigation, documentation and guidance of the students that is presented.

Key words: learner styles, multiple methodology use, coach, human character, polyglot, individualisation and artificial language environment.

Abstract:
This study explores unusual interventions (UIs) in counselling and psychotherapy, as defined by Akhtar (2011, p. xvii): “Clinical surprises ... when the [therapist] makes a radical departure from the set and familiar rules of technique”. There is currently a paucity of literature and research in this area, and the present study aims to contribute to an emerging theory: Under what circumstances do UIs occur, how do they manifest, and what are the therapeutic consequences? A qualitative methodology, constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006), was used in this endeavour. 10 psychotherapists and psychologists, of varying theoretical orientations and training backgrounds, were recruited via email, and subsequently interviewed about UIs. 2 pilot interviews with trainees were included in the final sample, which, otherwise, consisted of practitioners with a minimum of 10 years clinical experience. The Grounded Theory is comprised of 21 UI proposals, derived from 4 core, sequential categories. A distinction is made between Full and Partial UIs, with the former denoting a spontaneous, ‘not thought through’ therapist response. The UIs reported in this study predominantly had a positive therapeutic effect. The UI process may lead to therapist self-conflict as it represents a deviation from prescribed, standard technique.

Abstract:
This study aimed at determining the spatial and temporal distribution of Pomatomus saltatrix larvae off the temperate coast of Western Australia by examining sets of existing, archived ichthyoplankton samples. These samples covered several years, encompassed a range of sampling techniques (oblique, vertical, surface and neuston tows), and covered the spawning area hypothesised by Lenanton et al. (1996) for P. saltatrix off Western Australia. Overall, from a total of 19 246 fish larvae examined, only 31 P. saltatrix larvae were found. These larvae were found in an area offshore of Geraldton and in the waters around Rottnest Island. Sizes of P. saltatrix larvae ranged from 3 .4mm to 19 .5mm body length. P. saltatrix larvae were present in samples taken in January, March, April and May, suggesting spawning during summer and autumn. P. saltatrix larvae were typically found in surface waters on the continental shelf ( <200m). Larval age was estimated using an existing length-age regression published from the stock of P. saltatrix occurring on the east coast of the United States of America. Age estimates ranged from 7 to 31 days after hatching. The AusCONNIE oceanographic connectivity interface was used to identify potential source areas for these larvae and thereby allow inference of where mature P. saltatrix may be spawning. The AusCONNIE output suggested that wind-driven currents associated with southerly wind stress may play a role in larval transport in summer, and the influence of the southward flowing Leeuwin Current may be more important in autumn. Overall, the results of the study provide support for the hypothesis of Lenanton et al. (1996) that P. saltatrix spawns in temperate shelf waters of W.A. in summer and autumn.

Abstract:
The increasing demand for food that are more nutritious, safe, affordable, pleasant and healthy is the driving force of product and process innovation in the food and beverage industry. Nanotechnology offers a way to meet such demands through the design of materials that are able to improve the performance in some of the most relevant operations of this industry (such as filtration, preservation and quality control), as well as some important characteristics of the products (such as stability, flavour, nutritional quality, etc.). Among the nanomaterials developed for practical purposes, electrospun nanofibrous materials, produced from synthetic and bio- polymers have received great attention by virtue of their fabrication simplicity through the electrospinning technique and their special nano-related features that include large surface-to-mass ratio, very high porosity, enhanced mechanical resistance and improved responsive capacity to changes in the surrounding atmosphere compared to conventional configurations of the same polymer or polymer blend. Nanofibrous materials can combine the advantages of particulate nanomaterials like nanoparticles with the advantages of polymeric laminate materials like films or membranes. In this thesis, we will demonstrate the potentialities of nanofibers in three spheres of food-related applications: (i) sensors aimed at food quality control, (ii) as encapsulation/release systems for active ingredients or packaging materials and (iii) as separation membranes for beverage filtration. The methodological strategy that will be followed, intends to be as close as possible to the ready-to-use approach, rather than to the proof-of-concept study, by using more realistic samples, materials and testing conditions. The thesis is thus structured in three chapters, each one devoted to the above mentioned technological sphere. In particular, chapter 1 will investigate the application of polyamidic nanofibrous membranes for increasing selectivity and specificity in electrochemical sensing of complex foodstuffs. Chapter 2 will explore the use of nanofibers for encapsulation and controlled release of bioactive chemical species (such as antioxidant phenolic compounds and antimicrobial volatiles). Finally, chapter 3 will descrive the use of nanostructured membranes for the filtration of beverages (in particular of apple juice) and for selectively removing bitter polyphenols. Every tailor-made application developed represents a separate scientific contribution and is an individual deliverable of the thesis.
