Full textBased on ethnographic research data from Curitiba\'s tailors, this work explores the skills and techniques associated with the tailoring process, with the goal of understanding to understand how gestures, materials and work tools interact with each other producing not only clothes, but also the tailors themselves and the bodies of their respective clients. Reflection is devoted on the investigation of these practices as processes of knowledge production, and is in tune with the propositions that rethink the relationship between man and matter. The central axis of observation follows the suggestion of Tim Ingold (2013) that doing is a process of correspondence between the maker and material, not imposition or application of prior knowledge. It is suggested that the client\'s body and the tailor\'s capabilities are modeled by tailor-made clothing in the compromises established between suits, tailors and clients. In the end, it is intended to contribute to the understanding of the recent transformations of this field of work, especially with regard to the emergence of new ways of practicing tailoring.

For each semester in the second quarter of Eighteenth century, the City Council of Mariana had been summoning craftsmen to get their mercantile licenses, regulating their manual specialties due the extensive Termo de Mariana. Between the years of 1735 and 1750, the tailoring and tailors were the most license pleading craft and artisans in the City Council of Mariana. Such notoriety has motivated the present dissertation entitled Using the tailor’s craft: The tailoring and the tailors of the Termo de Mariana (1735 – 1750). The systematization and analysis of this source have allowed the elaboration of a nominative list containing 323 tailors who requested one or more mercantile licenses between the years of 1735 and 1750 in order to exercise craft specialized in tailoring at some places of the Termo de Mariana. Based on that, the present dissertation seeks to comprehend the labor universe of this mechanical specialty and its agents in a restrict time-space analysis by taking data from City Council documents. Altogether, the tailors were historical subjects qualified in crafting clothes, acting upon a vivacious and multifaceted socioeconomic conjecture, in which they wore the ordinary and luxurious necessities of a society of distinctions and appearances.

Full textThe synthesis of glycopolymers with various comonomers as prepared via the RAFT process is investigated. The macro-RAFT agent poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose) (PMAlpGlc) was prepared by polymerization of the glycomonomer with cumyl phenyl dithioacetate as the chain transfer agent. Chain extension with styrene or methyl acrylate or acrylic acid afforded novel diblock copolymers, (PMAlGlc-b-poly[styrene] or PMAGlc-b-poly[methyl acrylate] or PMAlGlc-b-poly[acrylic acid]), with predetermined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The poly(acrylic acid) based glycopolymer was used to modify the surface of CaCO3, forming what will be referred to as a ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particle. This surface modifying effect was evaluated in depth; a schematic study of the effect of reaction temperature, pH, reaction time and glycopolymer concentration on CaCO3 crystallization was carried out. The analytical techniques Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to verify that these ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particles have an increased adherence to cellulose compared to ‘non sugar-coated’ particles. A series of polymer configurations comprising various ratios of glycomoiety to poly(acrylic acid) was prepared. The effect of this polymer series on CaCO3 crystallization was evaluated and the ideal polymer configuration and its optimum synthesis conditions (i.e. reaction pH, temperature, time and polymer concentration) that gave maximum adherence of the ‘sugar-coated CaCO3’ particle onto cellulose were identified. The ability of these poly(acrylic acid) based glycopolymers to increase the interaction between CaCO3 and cellulose was then evaluated. This was done by simply mixing all three substrates, i.e. glycopolymer, cellulose and CaCO3 together. Analysis by TGA, SEM and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) revealed both the ideal polymer configuration that favoured increased adherence of the CaCO3 to cellulose and the optimum reaction conditions required for application and testing. In addition to studying the interaction between cellulose and CaCO3, the amphiphilic nature of the glycopolymers was determined. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirmed that coreshell particles were prepared and that these particles are solvent exchangeable (in the case of styrene and methyl acrylate glyco-blocks) or pH exchangeable (in the case of acrylic acid glyco-blocks).

Full textThis research aims to develop a framework within which to analyse and discuss the "e-tailing partnership" - a "horizontal" partnership model in which e-taiIers promote, sell and even bundle one another’s goods in a mutually beneficial partnership. At the core of the framework is the concept of "value". The research draws on marketing theory to structure value into a "value block" which enables firms to quantify gains or losses in e-tailing projects. The paper discusses e-tailing partnerships within the value block framework. The partnership contract and the distribution of value between partners are both analysed. Design requirements for theoretical partnering systems are deduced and reported. Risks and implications for related systems are considered. Finally, three commercial software candidates are empirically evaluated in terms of the partnership models presented. From this research it is apparent that the e-tailing partnership is worth serious contemplation and may prove to be a significant business model for firms in the New Internet Economy.

This thesis refers to the social need of the implementation of electrochemical sensors in our daily life at different levels. From a sanitary point of view, the use and real application of user-friendly platforms by the patient itself would facilitate the decision-making process thanks to the obtaining of relevant information and monitoring of a disease. Besides, the use of these tools individually, in health centers or even hospitals, would reduce the cost that healthcare must pay on a daily basis. In a different approach, this type of sensors can also offer other types of applications, which can be applied for environmental or safety purposes. The manufacturing of electrochemical sensors (amperometric and potentiometric) integrated and embedded on different substrates easy to manipulate, low cost and robust (such as textiles, balloons or paper) has been achieved during this thesis. The study of their analytical performance under different mechanical stress and using different biological fluids (detecting ions in sweat or glucose in serum and blood) has also been carried out successfully. These technological contributions are aimed at overcoming the challenges that today's society needs to solve: such as the sustainability of the health system in an aging population; the maintenance of security and general wellbeing; and environmental control. This thesis contributes with huge advancements to face these issues and shows different scientific solutions and useful tools for these challenges that society needs to address. Full textABSTRACT
Much of the content of modern day language didactics can accomplish a lot when it comes to details and specific areas of learning, but rather seldom does it give a larger picture that can serve as a base to explore new territory and develop another way of teaching and learning.
The aim of this thesis is to develop a practical concept that enfolds some of these theories and ideas.
Instead of a focus on methodology this thesis attracts attention to the roles of both teachers and students as well as the use of multiple methodology use because of the goal which is individualised education.
Another issue is the mentality of the learner with the polyglot as the model for an efficient language learner. These ideas affect the content of the tool for investigation, documentation and guidance of the students that is presented.
Key words: learner styles, multiple methodology use, coach, human character, polyglot, individualisation and artificial language environment.

Full textThe increasing demand for food that are more nutritious, safe, affordable, pleasant and healthy is the driving force of product and process innovation in the food and beverage industry. Nanotechnology offers a way to meet such demands through the design of materials that are able to improve the performance in some of the most relevant operations of this industry (such as filtration, preservation and quality control), as well as some important characteristics of the products (such as stability, flavour, nutritional quality, etc.). Among the nanomaterials developed for practical purposes, electrospun nanofibrous materials, produced from synthetic and bio- polymers have received great attention by virtue of their fabrication simplicity through the electrospinning technique and their special nano-related features that include large surface-to-mass ratio, very high porosity, enhanced mechanical resistance and improved responsive capacity to changes in the surrounding atmosphere compared to conventional configurations of the same polymer or polymer blend. Nanofibrous materials can combine the advantages of particulate nanomaterials like nanoparticles with the advantages of polymeric laminate materials like films or membranes. In this thesis, we will demonstrate the potentialities of nanofibers in three spheres of food-related applications: (i) sensors aimed at food quality control, (ii) as encapsulation/release systems for active ingredients or packaging materials and (iii) as separation membranes for beverage filtration. The methodological strategy that will be followed, intends to be as close as possible to the ready-to-use approach, rather than to the proof-of-concept study, by using more realistic samples, materials and testing conditions. The thesis is thus structured in three chapters, each one devoted to the above mentioned technological sphere. In particular, chapter 1 will investigate the application of polyamidic nanofibrous membranes for increasing selectivity and specificity in electrochemical sensing of complex foodstuffs. Chapter 2 will explore the use of nanofibers for encapsulation and controlled release of bioactive chemical species (such as antioxidant phenolic compounds and antimicrobial volatiles). Finally, chapter 3 will descrive the use of nanostructured membranes for the filtration of beverages (in particular of apple juice) and for selectively removing bitter polyphenols. Every tailor-made application developed represents a separate scientific contribution and is an individual deliverable of the thesis.
