Abstract:
The aim of the research is to study the employee engagement strategies utilised in Taiwan's SMEs from the perspective of the employees. In doing so, a qualitative research method was employed using semi-structured interviews. Nine participants from five sectors of SMEs (electronics & information, metal transportation, machinery and equipment, food manufacturing, and textile) were interviewed. The authors' results reveal that having high levels of engagement amongst employees in Taiwan's SMEs will bring about an increase in work commitment amongst employees which encourages productivity for the organisation. These findings hold several important theoretical and practical implications.

The Application for Multi Criteria Decision Making." International Business Research 9, no. 3 (February 25, 2016): 121. http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/ibr.v9n3p121.

Abstract:

Because of the financial market fast development between Taiwan and Mainland China, commercial banks, sometimes, cannot have an efficient method to investigate loan credentials for small and medium enterprises. Without efficient methods, commercial banks are forced to undertake the unnecessary default risks. The article chooses the behaviors of commercial banks between Mainland China and Taiwan to become study target. The purpose is to investigate the assessment method and influence factor of commercial banks toward small and medium enterprises for loan. Through modified Delphi approach and Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), the article attempts to analyze the decision-making measure of loan for commercial banks toward small and medium enterprises. From the results of practical evidence, the loan assessment measure of commercial banks between Taiwan and Mainland China is quite different. During loan assessment, China commercial banks focus on the debt-paying ability; on the contrary, Taiwan commercial banks focus on profitability of enterprises. The practical approved result of the study has supplied the insufficient data for related study articles in the past. More, the study can also be an important reference for perform related tasks in Taiwan’s and China’s commercial banks.

Abstract:
Along with Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT), the need for e-management has been extensive. For helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to take the first step to link up Industry 4.0, the implementation of the enterprise collaboration system (ECS) in SMEs has become inevitable. We use SuccMail to examine the effect of external supports and internal supports for ECS implementation of performance. To conduct this aim, we adopted the questionnaire from ERP and revised it for ECS. We collected the data from three SMEs from Taiwan and used the SPSS to run the correlation and multiple regressions. We find that all the supports are related to the performance; however, considering all the supports together, only some supports have significant and positive effects. We conclude that the supports can help SMEs in implementing ECS to increase the performance. Furthermore, the internal supports are more significantly and positively affecting the performance of implementing ECS in SME.

Abstract:
In face of the rapidly changing market, a micro-enterprise could keep its ability for quick adaptation and create more core value. Small and medium enterprises present the majority among the enterprises in Taiwan, showing the importance of micro-enterprises in the economic development in Taiwan. Micro-enterprises are affirmed in international societies as they create employment opportunities, balance urban and rural development, enhance income equality, and cohere with social network. The creativity of micro-enterprises is indeed not inferior to large-scale enterprises; however, with effective management, they could create more value added.By distributing and collecting questionnaires on-site, the franchisees of Richmaker Diners are sampled for the investigation. A total of 200 copies of questionnaires were distributed, and 117 valid copies were retrieved, with the retrieval rate of 59%. Each retrieved copy was regarded as a valid sample. The research results show 1. partially positive effects of Social Network on Productivity in Operating Performance, 2. significantly positive effects of Social Network on Profitability in Operating Performance, 3. remarkably positive effects of Social Network on Growth Force in Operating Performance, 4. effects of some personal Background on Social Network, and 5. effects of some personal Background on Operating Performance.

Abstract:
This study examines the impact of capital structure, working capital, and governance quality on the financial performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan using a sample of more than 2000 firms from the Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ) during the 24-year period of 1995–2018. Panel data are used to create statistics for the regression model. The result shows that a firm’s capital structure, represented by the debt ratio, has a significantly negative impact on the firm’s financial measures (return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE)), where the working capital, represented by the cash conversion cycle (CCC), has a negative impact and governance quality, represented by the board size, cash dividend distribution, and the percentage of directors, has different impacts.

Abstract:
Globally, 95% of enterprises are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Social media has recently become a powerful marketing tool due to characteristics such as the ability to share digital information and interact with consumers instantly. In SMEs, limited budgets restrict the use of social media as marketing tools. Thus, complimentary use of social media may be an alternative method for SMEs to maximize their marketing strategies. This study identifies what marketing goals are important for SME growth and how complimentary social media are used for attaining marketing goals. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) analysis was conducted to confirm the order of local weights and global weights for marketing goals and complimentary social media. We found that the order of local weights for marketing goals for SMEs in the growth phase is brand awareness > online purchase > sales potential. The order of global weights for complimentary social media to meet above marketing goals is Facebook > PIXNET > Twitter > Instagram > YouTube > LINE. Finally, we used an SME from Taiwan as a case study to ensure that the application of the above complimentary social media can meet above marketing goals and potentially increase the survival of SMEs at the growth phase in Taiwan.

Abstract:
Due to the impact of globalization, the competition between enterprises has become fierce and led the supply chains of many industries to be reorganized. One of the consequences is that the operation of many small and medium enterprises (SMs) had become very difficult. Hence, many of SMEs in Taiwan have gone bankrupt and some of them have moved to other places where they have lower production costs, in order to survive; this not only hollowed out the industries but also disconnected the supply chains in their mother countries. Because Taiwan’s SMEs are generally poor in innovation, this study explored the implementation of the theory of inventive problem-solving (TRIZ) with alignment of new product development (NPD) and supply chain management (SCM) to strengthen the innovation and productivity of new products, so that SMEs can refer to its use to aid sustainable business operation. We considered an SME in Taiwan as a case to study and investigate the strategies that it employed to achieve survival and sustainability. By examining the practical applications of the NPD of the case company, which was based on the TRIZ and NPD SCM alignment, we found that value-added products may be created despite unfavorable industry environments, by implementing and coordinating the TRIZ and three product-related variables, namely innovating, modularity, and variety. This study explored practical alternatives for SMEs to develop various value-added products that meet customers’ changing requirements and succeed in competitive markets to achieve a sustainable business operation. Considering SMEs are crucially important to the economic equality and development of countries and that SMEs may only survive for a short time when operating in changing supply chain environments, this study can be used as a reference for the management of SMEs and future academic research in related fields.

Abstract:
The latest version of the draft bill regarding Law on the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition has added new arrangements about the abuse of a superior bargaining position. The new law proposal which is intended to amend existing Indonesian competition law (Law Number 5 Year 1999) stipulates that any business actor is prohibited from abuse its superior bargaining position within a partnership agreement with other less dominant entities. Under Law Number 20 Year 2008 on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, a partnership agreement means any agreement made between micro, small and medium enterprises and large enterprises like state or privately owned national businesses, joint ventures and foreign businesses that conduct economic activities in Indonesia. For example under the Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SoE) Regulation No. 7 of 2015, the SoE is obligated to arrange a business partnership agreement with small scale enterprise. Unlike the arrangements on abuse of dominant position which requires the establishment of monopoly power or dominance in a relevant market, the abuse of superior bargaining position may exist without market power and only required competition authority to detect whether there is any exploitation by the counterparty in a relatively stronger bargaining position. Such a condition makes many antitrust experts or economists question the relevancy of regulating abuse of superior bargaining position under competition law. However, several jurisdictions –Japan, Korea, Taiwan, France, and Germany- have regulated the abuse of superior bargaining position under their national competition laws

Abstract:
China has achieved rapid economic growth and become involved in the economic globalization through its policy of reform and opening-up and modernization. It has attracted much investment from lots of Taiwanese enterprises, including some small and medium-sized enterprises featuring a high labor cost and facing difficult operation in the traditional industries. Thanks to the policy, many Taiwanese enterprises have got a chance to rebirth by transforming their crises into opportunities. With the implementation of the policy of urbanization, the people from rural areas in China have been moving to urban areas, and the enterprises of the second and third industries have been concentrating in cities. This has not only fueled the livelihood-oriented consumption in China but also expanded the domestic demand market of the Taiwanese medium and large-sized livelihood enterprises in China. The Belt and Road trade foundation construction program, which aims to link Europe, Asia and Africa and was proposed in 2013, is an extension of the Great Development of Western Part of China and offers Taiwanese enterprises a chance to get fully involved in the development of the international market. The 31 Measures to Benefit Taiwan announced by the Chinese government in February 2018 has significant influence on the future development of the Taiwanese enterprises in China. Therefore, this paper will elaborate on the effects of the Belt and Road and the 31 Measures to Benefit Taiwan on the Taiwanese enterprises.

Abstract:
The majority of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or original design manufacturers (ODMs). Given the growing intensity of global competition, transformation from OEM or ODM to a branded enterprise is a key concern for SMEs. SMEs’ branding processes are subject to numerous problems and among them, resistance by organization members is considered the most critical. Previous studies have largely focused on factors contributing to branding success or resistance by an organization’s employees, and few have addressed the implications of SMEs managers’ resistance to branding. To address the research gap, this study constructs a cognitive model for managers’ resistant behavior while drawing on the theory of planned behavior. Then, applying structural equation modeling, this study confirms that four exogenous variables, perceived belief, changes in job characteristics, organizational inertia, and social factors, directly influence two endogenous variables, managers’ attitude toward resistant behavior and the subjective norms of resistant behavior. Using demographic variables as independent variables, this study conducts a logistic regression analysis to predict companies resistant to branding on the basis of their background characteristics. The results highlight that the three factors with the highest predictive powers are organizational inertia, job position, and capitalization.

For the purpose of sustainable development, green management has become an important social issue for many companies. Substantial scholarship has focused on corporate green behavior. However, little is known concerning how corporate green behavior is influenced by environmental uncertainty. This paper was aimed at analyzing the influence of perceived environmental uncertainty on the adoption of green practices for small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). We conducted a questionnaire survey on SMEs in Taiwan and concluded that environmental uncertainty has a significantly negative influence on the decision to adopt green practices for SMEs.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship with organization setting has been conceptualized in a variety of ways. Studies in this area remain broad and appear relatively fragmented. From previous literature reviews, we found that little attention has been paid toward the entrepreneurial management model with the starting-up phases of Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan. In view of this, the purpose of this study is to fill this gap in the literature by proposing a research framework that integrates both entrepreneurship literature and Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) literature. To address this problem, a new research method based on integrating cases study and in-depth interviews methods are also proposed. According to the results, the individual factor was the central part among the four contributing factors (reproduction, imitation, valorization, and venture). With respect to the six dimensions of entrepreneurship (strategic orientation, commitment to opportunity, commitment to resources, control over resources, management frame, and compensation philosophy), the enterprises interviewed in this research all set forth their perspectives. As for the four kinds of entrepreneurial status, there were four entrepreneurial imitation companies and two entrepreneurial venture companies in this research. To conclude, several propositions were proposed, and the results released that the individual factor was the crucial part among the four contributing factors. Research also examined the main dimensions of entrepreneurship for analyzing the theoretical basis.

Abstract:
The implementation of an effective quality management system has always been considered a principal method for a manufacturer to maintain and improve its product and service quality. Globally many regulatory authorities incorporate quality management system as one of the mandatory requirements for the regulatory control of high-risk medical devices. The present study aims to analyze the GMP enforcement experience in Taiwan between 1998 and 2013. It describes the regulatory implementation of medical device GMP requirement and initiatives taken to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in compliance with the regulatory requirement. Based on statistical data collected by the competent authority and industry research institutes, the present paper reports the growth of Taiwan local medical device industry after the enforcement of GMP regulation. Abstract:
A credit evaluation model for SMEs in Taiwan based on the characteristics of financial as well as non-financial data is proposed in this paper. While most financial distress prediction models use financial ratios as predictive variables, this study also integrates non-financial data as predictive variables. Kuo and Li (1999) proposed that certain firm-specific financial ratios have informational content. Moreover, the introduction of non-financial variables does enhance the model's discrimination power. The proposed credit evaluation model makes it easier to classify successful or failed SMEs.

Abstract:
Recently, many manufacturing industries have been facing challenges such as rising material costs, small-volume and large-variety products, shortened production cycles, increased labor costs and longer after-sales service times, which is a very tough challenge for most small and medium-sized component manufacturing suppliers. In addition to the current hot topics in the manufacturing industry - Smart Manufacturing (Industry 4.0) and lean production management, if small and medium-sized enterprises are not able to adjust the pace of manufacturing timely and find a suitable production model, they will soon be overwhelmed by the torrent of the era of speed and accuracy. In the face of the dramatic changes in the industry structure, the company can deploy the global expansion of overseas customers in advance, and adjust to apply and implement a flexible manufacturing model system through the introduction of the Industrial Internet of Things and flexible manufacturing production management. In order to meet the market needs, the manufacturing industry is gradually oriented towards customized production and the rapid development of new products. To meet such stringent requirements, flexible manufacturing becomes one of the necessary ways for enterprises to consider their development models. Therefore, the efficiency and reliability of work can be improved through the Industrial Internet of Things that facilitates machine-to-machine communication, cloud-based big data and learning and imitations of smart robots. This study is an in-depth study of a company that is currently in the process of digital transformation, collecting relevant information and reviewing the analysis to find a suitable smart manufacturing solution for the company and to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the strategic development of the company. The findings can provide a significant reference for homotypic companies in the development of their business strategies.

Abstract:
Taiwan's competitiveness in the global arena has often been attributed to the country's dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In the most recent decade, the Taiwanese government has increased support to innovative SMEs, and with the emergence of new fields such as biotechnology, companies with highly innovation-driven agendas are surfacing. The innovation focus provides not only new opportunities but also challenges for Taiwanese SMEs. In this article I aim to increase the understanding of how national and global forces affect SME innovation in Taiwan. To this end, I use an industrial network approach to trace the national and global interdependencies that follow the network of a Taiwanese SME in the biopharmaceutical sector.

Abstract:
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are usually lacking in resources and technical capabilities. Clusters are considered to be a common development pattern to promote resource sharing and information exchange among SMEs. The business ecosystem provides a new perspective for contemporary companies. Through the symbiosis and evolution of the biomimetic system, companies can pursue their own interests on the platform and, at the same time, promote the growth of the overall ecosystem. This study used manufacturing and service Taiwan SMEs as the sample population, and utilized FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) and survey questionnaire methods to explore both the factors that influence the analysis and comparison of the keystone business strategy between manufacturing and service industries and the reasons behind it.

Abstract:
This paper examines internationalization processes in the context of the Internet economy and presents some exploratory insights; it is based on case studies, supplemented by a preliminary quantitative study from a developing economy context, concerning the role of the Internet in enhancing the internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Three main points are made in this paper. First, the Internet holds great promise in facilitating the internationalization of SMEs – especially as a marketing tool, and the communications. And the degree of internationalization (DOI) is positively correlated with the degree of electronic commerce (DOEC). Second, Internet technology has little influence on the SMEs' choice of entry mode. Third, stage-based theories do not reflect company experience in Internet economy; a preliminary study suggests that this notion is worthy of further study on a larger scale. These findings have implications for future research, practice and policy-making in terms of taking a holistic view of the use of Internet technology.

Abstract:
Wuan Chuang Food Industrial Corporation was founded in 1909 and is the longest lasting brand of soy sauce in Taiwan. Along its evolution into what it is today, this small and medium-sized enterprise had adjusted its focus between black-bean and soybean soy sauce businesses. The former is a traditional Taiwanese soy sauce that requires a lengthy, naturally-brewed process and tremendous manual works. In turn, black-bean soy sauce can only be produced in small volumes and charged premium prices. The latter, introduced to Taiwan in 1940s, is a Japanese-style soy sauce that can be produced massively in machine-controlled, giant tanks, and is dominated by large firms who compete sharply on prices. This case delineates Wuan Chuang’s growth path and the nature of the soy sauce industry in Taiwan. The stage is set for students to discuss Wuan Chuang’s strategic orientations and whether the directions of its actions fit with its competitive strengths.
