Abstract:
This study investigates the role of development planning in empowering rural communities in Indonesia’s decentralised era. Evidence is produced that the combination of procedural justice in planning development and social learning in its implementation can assist self-organisation and help empower local communities. Significant benefits are shown to result in: the acquisition and use of collective resources; the development of shared knowledge, skills, values and trust; community leadership; and the development of social networks. Two features of this empowerment model are community-based planning, utilising participatory rural appraisal at the level of the natural village, and the organisation of collective action. These are shown to be effective ways of incorporating procedural justice and social learning in self organisation and community empowerment.

Abstract:

Land and water use at archaeological sites is a growing field of study within Mesoamerican archaeology. In Mesoamerica, similar to elsewhere in the world, landscapes were settled based partially upon the characteristics of the environment and the types of food and water resources available. Across Mesoamerica, landscape concepts were also important to religious beliefs and ritual activity in a manner that may have had the potential to influence the power dynamics of a site. This thesis focuses on the management of water at the site of Takalik Abaj in Guatemala during the Middle to Late Preclassic periods (c. 1000 B.C. - A.D. 250) in order to analyze potential ritual and political functions of the water management system. Using spatial data within GIS, this thesis examines the flow of water across the site as directed by its topographical features. The archaeological record of Takalik Abaj and comparisons to water management systems at other Mesoamerican sites are also used to investigate the functions of the water management system. Thesis findings suggest that the water management system of Takalik Abaj was multi-faceted and that ritual functions tied to the control of water may have contributed to the identities and power of the elite.

Blanco, Valdez Diego Manuel. "La desnasalización en ese eja (Takana)." Bachelor's thesis, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12672/17178.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Mulovhedzi, Takalani Peter. "Pastoral guidelines for unmarried Christians regarding pre-marital sex / Takalani Peter Mulovhedzi." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/462.

Full text
Abstract:
The main problem which this study aims to address is; "How should Biblical views of sex be applied in the life of the unmarried Christians in the church of God?" In attempting to address this problem, the study will try to answer the following questions: - What are the Scriptural perspectives about Pre-marital sex? - What are the practical situations that unmarried Christians meet in their daily lives? - How can unmarried Christians be guided within Christian perspectives to abstain from pre-marital sex? The aim of this study is to investigate and propose guidelines for counselling unmarried Christians concerning matters of pre-marital sex. Zerfass's model for research was utilised in this study, forming basis-theoretical, meta-theoretical and practice-theoretical guidelines and methodology (Heyns & Pieterse, 1990:35-36). The study compares Scriptural perspectives about pre-marital sex with the practical situations that unmarried Christians meet in their daily lives. Attention is paid to three important concepts: Pre-marital sex, sexual intercourse, and unmarried Christians. The Scriptural perspectives and the key concepts are researched in detail, compared and evaluated. As a conclusion, guidelines are provided h m a Christian perspectives that can help unmarried Christians to abstain from sex before marriage. Pre-marital sex is a serious issue all over the country of South Africa, and its prevention has first of all to do with providing the correct information and then practicing it in everyday life. Pre-marital sex in the church is strongly influenced and by wrong information and messages h m the world, as is indicated in the empirical work. The problem in the church is caused by unmarried Christians who fail to apply and practice Biblical principles of pre-marital sex in their daily life. It is the church's responsibility to remind all young people about the danger of committing the sin of sexual immorality (sex and sexuality, homosexuality, lesbianism, incest, prostitution, pornography, rape, etc). Unmarried Christians need to know what the will of God is with regard to sex and related matters in order that they can be able to abstain from sexual activities. The only way to help unmarried Christians to abstain from premarital sex is found in God's Word, the Bible. Without applying and practicing Biblical knowledge, no unmarried Christian can abstain. God has provided guidelines to avoid pre-marital sex in the life of the young people. They are guidelines that should be used by all Christians and counsellors in counselling and helping unmarried Christians to live lives that are clean before God. Because the unmarried Christian is a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), he or she must not only know God's principles for sex, but he/she is instructed to apply them in everyday life. The ability to follow God's guidelines and principles regarding pre-marital sex is accomplished through Christ's presence in young people's lives.

Abstract:
This study deals with the relevant support services in the education system of the Northern Province. The first chapter serves as the orientation for the research project and contextualize the problem statement, which revolves around the question: What support services are needed to make education and training more effective in the education system of the Northern Province? The aims and objectives, delimitation also of the field of study, methods of investigation structure of study and feasibility of study are presented in this chapter. In the subsequent chapters, attention is given to the definition and theory of support services, which are clearly outlined and discussed separately. These include support services for educators, learners and teaching structures and activities. Support services for educators include: -Support regarding academic equipment; -Support regarding the relationship between the educator and the learner; -Support regarding the relationship between the educator and the learner's family; and -Personal support of the educator. Support services for teaching activities and structures include: -Teaching activities; -Support in the management task of the school; and -Support with the physical features of the school. Attention is also given to internal and external factors underlying the requirements of support services. Internal factors underlying the needs of support services include: -Internal factors of educative nature; -Internal factors of historic nature; -Internal factors of interactive nature; -Infrastructure; -Students; -Educators; -Curriculum and examinations; and -School management. External factors underlying the needs of support services include: -Demography; -Geographic and climatic factors; -The physical and psychological characteristics of the target group; -Science and technology; -Language; -Socio-economic situation of the target group; -Political and institutional situation; -Philosophy of life or religion; and -Culture. The empirical research, which includes the construction of questionnaire based on literature survey, and the interpretation of data that formed the main focus of the research are also discussed. The dissertation concludes with a presentation of its findings and recommendations with regard to aims and objectives of this research project.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to undertake a theoretical analysis of the dynamics of change in pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe oral traditions of Te Waipounamu to gain a deeper understanding of their nature, function, evolution and meaning. For the purposes of this thesis a framework will be established to classify changes to encompass different types of alterations made pre-contact and post-contact to authentic and un-authentic oral traditions. This model will analyse the continuum of change and will be applied in later chapters to pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe traditions to gain an understanding of the dynamics, evolution and construction of the oral traditions of Te Waipounamu. This study of the morphology of tradition will demonstrate they were never fixed but evolved alongside their communities as they adapted to ensure tribal identity and mana was firmly entrenched in their local landscape. A major component of this thesis will be analysis of Waitaha traditions centring upon three key questions; firstly who were Waitaha peoples, secondly, where were they from, and thirdly, were they, and do they continue to be separate social units? This thesis will contribute to this discussion by analysing literature concerning pre-Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe tribal identities to ascertain not just who they were and where they were from but how their identities have been constructed and modified over time. Analysis will examine the role of oral tradition in establishing tribal identity and how Waitaha traditions were changed both pre and post-contact to suit the cultural, political and ideological imperatives of the time, providing an insight into how our ancestors perceived, recollected and constructed the past to suit the needs of the present.

Jongens, Richard. "The Anatoki fault and structure of the adjacent Buller and Takaka terrane rocks, northwest Nelson, New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geology, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4758.

Full text
Abstract:
The Early Paleozoic rocks exposed in the northwest of the South Island, New Zealand, can be grouped into two terranes. An Ordovician deep water passive margin assemblage makes up the Buller terrane. A Cambrian arc assemblage and an Ordovician to Silurian mainly shallow water passive margin assemblage make up the Takaka terrane. The two terranes are cut by Late Paleozoic and Early Cretaceous plutonic rocks. The terrane boundary is the Anatoki Fault, which is a north-south striking, east dipping structure that steepens southwards. This thesis is a study of the movement history of the Anatoki Fault and a study of structures and microstructures in the flanking lithologies of the Buller and Takaka terranes. The study area is divided into seven areal domains, each containing structural evidence that can be related on an inter-domainal scale. In the study area, three major deformation events can be recognised in both the Buller and Takaka terrane rocks. Each consecutive deformation event recognised in one of the terranes has structures that can be matched in style, orientation, and timing of development with that in the adjacent terrane. D, is represented by upright to overturned towards the west, N-S trending, large scale folds with an axial planar slaty cleavage. D, structures are observed in all domains and relate to other N-S trending structures seen in both terranes. Based principally on constraints outside the study area, D, is thought to be Early-Middle Devonian in age. A well-developed foliation, which obliterates D, structures in close to the Anatoki Fault, represents D2• The foliation expresses a zone of non-coaxial ductile deformation observed in the north of the study area. Rb-Sr geochronology, and the relationship between the foliation and the adjacent ~lllMa Mt Olympus Pluton, suggest D2 formed in the Early Cretaceous (soon after ~ IllMa). D3 is represented mainly by mesoscale folds with an axial planar crenulation cleavage. D3 structures crenulate and refold both D, and D2 structures and are mid-Cretaceous in age. Two deformations are recognised in the Balloon Melange of the Takaka terrane. The first deformation is responsible for the melanging when the protolith was in an unlithified state. This deformation occurred in the Late Cambrian. The second deformation is expressed by a slaty fabric when the melange was lithified and is thought to be related to D,. The contact between the Balloon Melange and other units in the Takaka terrane is thought to be tectonic but locally intrusive. Most structures in Northwest Nelson can be correlated with D" D2, and D3 of the study area. However, some N-S trending folds in the Cambrian arc assemblage are thought to be older than D, and are here thought to relate to pre-D, Late Cambrian deformation recognised in the Balloon Melange. The Anatoki Fault records a complex history of both ductile and brittle movement, a history which differs in various segments of the fault. Thus, tectonites from central segments of the study area record ductile east over west reverse-slip associated with D" and represent an early stage in its movement history; D2 tectonites from the northernmost studied segment record Early Cretaceous ductile dextral-slip reactivation; tectonites from the southernmost segment records ductilelbrittle dextral normal-slip reactivation that postdates the intrusion of the ~137Ma Crow Granite. The post-137Ma movement, and brittle/ductile movement of unknown age recorded in the remaining segments, may be related to D2• The Anatoki Fault has also undergone Late Cenozoic brittle reactivation. A plate tectonic model is developed to explain the earlier structures of the study area and the general structure of Northwest Nelson. It is proposed that an accretionary wedge/fore-arc setting related to a Cambrian island arc subduction zone provides the environment in which pre-D, structures formed, and that in the Early-Middle Devonian, the two terranes amalgamated as a result of a convergent strike-slip plate boundary. Much of the Takaka terrane was truncated by the strike-slip movement which dominated the early stages of Devonian deformation whereas convergence related thin-skinned tectonics dominated the latter stages of deformation, and resulted in formation of the D, structures. In this model, the Central Belt of the Takaka terrane, which consists primarily of the Cambrian arc assemblage, is interpreted as an uplifted tectonic wedge in which the Anatoki Fault is a back-thrust. D2 and D3 relate to an extremely active and changing tectonic period of New Zealand in the Early to mid-Cretaceous. Twinning in ankerite porphyroblasts in D2 tectonites was examined to investigate the twin laws and their usefulness as a paleostress indicator. Results show that the twin laws are the same as those in dolomite and that twinning occurs at temperatures above ~250°C. Paleostress axes derived from the analysis provide evidence of microscale strain partitioning in which the porphyroblasts have accommodated a pure shear component. The c-axes preferred orientations in dynamically recrystallised calcite tectonites, from the Anatoki Fault zone, most closely resemble those produced in the grain-boundary migration regime of experimental studies. As such, the preferred orientations cannot be used to indicate shear-sense.

Suzuki, Saeko. "Popular educational books for women as cultural commodities in early modern Japan : a case study of Takara-bako and Oshie-gusa." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/58228.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines joshiyō ōrai-mono (popular educational publications for women in early modern Japan) as cultural commodities in the transmission of knowledge in relation to three areas: texts/illustrations, commercial publishers, and readers as clients. It also seeks to understand that woodblock prints have the characteristics of repeatable commodities. The project focuses on two encyclopaedia-type joshiyō ōrai-mono books: the 1814 edition of Onna daigaku takara-bako or The Treasure Box of the Women’s Greater Learning, and the second edition of Onna daigaku oshie-gusa or The Elementary Textbook of the Women’s Greater Learning, published in the mid-1840s. Comparing the two books reveals some notable issues. First, the commonality of the contents and physical characteristics of the two books shows that their publisher, Izumiya Ichibē, reused the texts, and copied the design of Takara-bako, a best-selling ōrai-mono, to produce his new book Oshie-gusa. Second, previous scholarship that has developed the literary genre framework for early modern print books cannot always explain the encyclopaedia type of popular educational materials because of their cross-genre characteristics. Third, Takara-bako emphasizes knowledge of waka poetry for female readers as well as providing the list of major female occupation catalogue in that period. Fourth, Oshie-gusa increased the practical contents such as Yin-yang divination and male-female compatibility as a handbook of marriage and family. Fifth, both books stress clothing-related matters, advocating not only household responsibilities but also female virtue based on neo-Confucianist ideology. The comparative analysis of Takara-bako and Oshie-gusa as cultural commodities has demonstrated the commercialization of knowledge in the Tokugawa period (1603-1868). Understanding the mechanisms of commercialization of printed knowledge can help us understand knowledge transmission that is de-commercialized or commercialized in different ways in electronic environments.

Abstract:
Homework in primary school level is an important discussion among teachers, students and parents in recent years particularly during the last two decades there has been great raise of interest to know the role of the parents as first educators of the children in improving their capacity. This research study tries to find out the point of views of the teachers about nature and feature of homework in primary classes (one to third) because majority of the students, particularly those who live in the rural areas of the country work at home or agriculture fields after school time to support their families and they have limited time to do the amount of homework that teachers want. Similarly cooperation or involvement of parents in homework process is also limited because considerable proportion of parents in remote areas of Afghanistan are uneducated and cannot effectively take part in homework process The study has been based on a field survey with 60 male and female teachers in Takhar province (Taloqan city and two districts, Farkhar and Dashte Qala). The study found that most of the teachers were aware about the goal and objective of the homework in primary classes and to some extent apply in one or other way, but, lack of proper planning, follow up and feedback mechanisms, time and amount of homework as well as low level involvement of parents and students themselves are the major shortages of the homework process in primary classes which requires great attention of the education actors in school and ministry levels. Similarly the only way of involvement of the families at school issues is the homework which can play the role of bridge between home and school so designing the of homework should be in way that parents specifically uneducated parents also could participate

The biblical passage, Jeremiah 29:1-14 was used, as a representative of other biblical passages, to shed light on the role of cities in mission work of the church while addressing misconceptions and false theology about the cities and the role they played and still play in the mission work of the church. The same biblical message is confirmed by many missiology literature, including, "Cities, Missions' New Frontier" by R.S. Greenway and T.M. Monsma (1989); "City of God - City of Satan" by R.C. Linthicum(1991) and "Discipling the City" by R.S. Greenway (1992). The biblical message and the missiology literature mentioned above were the basis from which the neglect of the role of the cities in the history of the mission work of the Reformed Churches in Southern Africa was studied. From these basis, the causes, implementations and effects of such neglect in the mission work of the Soutpansberg churches was studied in Chapter 3. The empirical research was conducted using the interview questionnaire in Chapter 4. The empirical results and findings, which were presented in this research, can direct churches towards a remedy of the neglect of the cities in their mission work as far as the strategies is concerned. The neglect of the cities in the history of the mission work of the Reformed Churches in Southern Africa was studied with an aim that churches learn from it and hence avoid the past neglect in their present and future mission plans, strategies and programs. In other words, the lesson is important for churches to view the role of the secular cities as important instruments used by God to speed up not only the planting and growing big holy churches from those secular cities outwards, but also the biblical reformation of the rural - orientated theories, strategies and practice!

Abstract:
Ese Ejja (Takana) is an endangered language of the Amazon, spoken by about 1,500 people in Peru and Bolivia. The first part is a sociolinguistic profile and describes the methodology: the data were recorded from a dozen speakers, in the course of 5 fieldtrips between 2005 and 2009 in Portachuelo, a Bolivian community. The second part is a grammar that places Ese Ejja typologically among the world languages, areally as an Amazonian language and genetically within the Takanan family. Among its interesting phonological features are two voiceless implosives and its complex verbal accent that is sensitive to stem valency. The morphology of the verb predicate is also intricate, with its 13 slots: roots can combine to form a compound stem, nouns can be incorporated and numerous morphemes of a (more or less) clear lexical origin suffixed. Of specific interest are the Aktionsart verbal suffixes with their adverbial semantics and the rich system of 10 ‘associated motion’ morphemes, also attested in the sister-language Cavineña and in some Australian languages. Predicative adjectives are the most frequent of the two adjective classes, and productively incorporate nouns. The 4 posture verbs are polygrammaticalized and thus omnipresent in the grammar: they appear in basic locative, existential and possessive constructions or as suffixes of present and of imperfective. Two systems of co-reference are distributed among 4 types of subordinate clauses: both systems are tripartite, i.e. go far beyond the better-known ‘same subject/different subject’ binary opposition. Abstract:
The master's thesis consists of 88 pages, contains 12 illustrations, 25 tables and 20 sources. The dissertation explores the problem of financial markets modeling. Modeling is a complex problem, especially in cases where financial time series exhibit fractal properties. Due to the disagreement of Walras equilibrium theory and statistical regularities that emerge in the study of current data, new methods of financial market analysis are considered - agent-oriented modeling and fractal time series analysis. The purpose of the study is to investigate agency-oriented modeling and to prove the feasibility of further use as a tool by analysts, traders and other decision-makers. The object of study - modern models of the financial market. The subject of the study - the agency approaches to the financial market. Research methods - model analysis, comparison of developed on-line behavior with real financial data. Two agent-oriented stock market models are considered in the paper - the Sato-Takayasu model and the generalized Ising model.

"Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations." Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Santoso, Slamet Budi. "Stakeholders Collaboration in Poverty Reduction Programs in South Sulawesi, Indonesia: A Case Study." Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40044/.

Full text
Abstract:
Collaboration among stakeholders on poverty reduction programs in developing countries is part of strategic approach to combating and significantly reducing poverty numbers. The main purpose of collaboration among stakeholders or actors is to transform the power of togetherness into energising local communities to reduce poverty numbers effectively. However, the history of implementation of various poverty reduction programs shows that there has been a long succession of such programs implemented by the Indonesian government in attempts to overcome poverty problems and to achieve social justice. This history means that the Indonesian government has had many experiences attempting a pragmatic philosophy to achieve social equity, eternal peace and common welfare. This study investigates the implementation of collaboration among stakeholders as poverty reduction strategies during the decentralisation era in the Takalar and Barru districts, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. A case study approach was taken, utilising the Evolutionary Governance Theory (EGT) of Van Assche, Beunen and Duineveld (2014). This research assessed the argument that inadequate collaboration and collective decision making between stakeholders involved in the development process is a major reason why poverty reduction policy and implementation has failed at the provincial and local district levels. Data collection methods including semi-structured interviews, review of documents and field observation. The 70 (seventy) informants were selected based on their knowledge, involvement and responsibility in the various collaborative poverty reduction programs in both districts. This sample included government officials, members of donor organisations, NGOs activists, local leaders and the local communities. The elements of EGT (Assche, Beunen, & Duineveld, 2014) as a social system framework were adjusted and extended based on the findings of the study within the context of the local public policies. This adaptation is based on the consideration that “the roles of local leaders lead on collaboration between stakeholders on poverty reduction programs”. findings from the two Indonesian districts can be generalised to a broader population with some boundaries. However, this in-depth study of the cases contributes valuable theoretical and practical knowledge to the community. The study findings show that the local leader as a key position on the collaboration among stakeholders evolved from existing system of Social Governance throughout a process of evolutionary governance. These collaborative anti-poverty programs are demonstrated by two case studies, which involved elements of civil society such as local leaders, local community leaders, local communities, donors, and NGOs activists, whose involvement is a major factor in the sustainability of the programs. Future research requires exploration of the roles of these actors to provide a broader perspective on their roles in evolutionary governance implementation and sustainable use.

The Streak-throated Fulvetta (Fulvetta formosana) is one of the newly recognized endemic bird species in Taiwan. However, the life history of this specie has been little known. In this study I collected morphological data and blood samples of Streak-throated Fulvettas from the Tataka Area, and used discriminant analysis and appearance of cloacal protuberance to distinguish their gender. Furthermore, I investigated foraging tactics and characteristics of microhabitat and food item usage of the Streak-throated Fulvetta to explore its foraging ecology between breeding and non-breeding seasons. The results showed that measurements on head length, tarsus length, beak depth, wing length, tail length, and body length were significantly different between females (n=14) and males (n=26). Accuracy of discrimiant analysis is 85%, indicating that sex distinguished through discrimiant analysis was more accurate than that by cloacal protuberance (70%). In foraging ecology, the Streak-throated Fulvetta preferred plantation forests both during breeding and non-breeding season, but avoided conifer-shrub forests during breeding season. In addition, foraging behavior and habitat use differed between seasons. Streak-throated Fulvettas used mostly glean maneuvers on tree parts for insects during breeding season, and used mostly hang and subsurface maneuvers on bamboo thickets during non-breeding season. I suspected that such discrepancy might result from different prey distribution between seasons. This study showed that the Streak-throated Fulvetta has different foraging behaviors that could respond flexibly to seasonal change in spatial distribution of prey abundance to survive harsh climate conditions in the winter.

Abstract Takada Shinji is a famous and erudite Japanese scholar in Shikyo (Book of Songs). He was the professor of Tokyo University and worked as service reading (Shijiang) for the Japanese emperor. Influenced by the questioning tendency from China, in contemporary Shikyo research in Japan, most scholars are leaning toward the standpoint in Chu Hsi’s Book of Poetry which devotes not much attention to Takada’s research of Shikyo. Yet his respect to Preface of Poem (Shi xu) and his research method based on the truth made his annotation of translation in Shikyo be respected and appreciated. Since Chinese Association of Book of Songs has been established in China in 1993, in several annual seminars, many researchers have approved that Chu Hsi’s standpoints in discarding Shi xu are open to objection. In Takada’s work, he cited theories from various points of view which are different from other scholars who cited the theories on their convictions. Therefore, the researcher of this research is attracted to explore what Takada’s personal point of view is among these theories. This research is focus on Shi xu in Takada Shinji’s work Airs of the States (Kuo feng) in Shikyo in Kanshi daike. In Takada’s Shikyo, he cited Shi xu and Chu Hsi’s Book of Poetry to discuss their plausible statements which are concerned in three aspects. First, Takada approved Chu’s statements. Second, Takada approved the statements in Shi xu. Third, he disapproved both. Few researches were discussed Shi xu in Takada Shinji’s Shikyo. Therefore, this research is aim to analyze and compare Chu Hsi’s Book of Poetry and Airs of the States in Takada’s Shikyo in order to identify Takada Shinji’s viewpoints and appraise Takada’s achievement and peculiarities in Shikyo. Coertzee, Geraldine. "Open sesame! : learning life skills from Takalani Sesame : a reception study of selected grade one learners in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/6374.

Abstract:
Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes are important in the promotion of intellectual development and school readiness in children. Equally important is the opportunity to learn in one‟s mother tongue. This study aimed to determine the value of using the multilingual television series Takalani Sesame as a Life Skills educational resource in specific South African schools, amongst Grade One learners. The focus lay on researching a possible mechanism for allowing children who had not attended quality ECD programmes to „catch up‟ in terms of knowledge they may be lacking, as well as providing a form of mother tongue instruction to African learners in schools where the language of instruction is English. A field experiment and a reception study were carried out at a primary school in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Two groups of twelve Grade One learners (from two different Grade One classes at the same school) were included in this research, which spanned a period of 6 months. The children in the test group watched a television series of Takalani Sesame (with guided viewing) and completed related activities including post viewing and homework activities. The children in the control group were not shown the series at school. Both groups were administered the same questionnaire both pre- and post-test in order to determine changes in Life Skills related learnt data. Other research methods included participant observation, focus group discussions, interviews with parents/caregivers and interviews with educators. These used Social Cognitive Theory as their basis, taking constructs that impact on behaviour change, such as modelling, outcome expectancies and behavioural capabilities into account. The research included a large focus on interpersonal communication between researcher and learner, and caregiver and learner, plus a concentration on the children‟s knowledge of and attitudes surrounding HIV/AIDS. Results showed satisfactory levels of attention to the series, as well as high levels of engagement with and enjoyment of the series. Levels of identification with characters were also noted to be high, increasing the possibilities of learning and behaviour change taking place. Decoding of messages was, for the most part, in line with the intentions of the producers, although oppositional readings, erroneous and creative decoding were also noted in some instances. The guided viewing component did well to increase levels of attention to the episode as well as allow for erroneously decoded messages to be corrected almost immediately. Positive changes in learnt data in the Life Skills areas of HIV/AIDS, Nutrition and Safety and Security were identified and these were noted to be impacted on by the homework activities which were included in the intervention to promote parent/caregiver-child communication. The research intervention was deemed to be a success in the selected school, and could possibly be recommended for use in similar South African primary schools where learners are taught in a language which is not their mother tongue. Possible areas for future related research were outlined. This research study contributes to the body of Entertainment Education (EE) research by identifying a new and valuable application for an EE intervention in the South African setting. This highlights the important aspects of localisation, in the South African context, promoting mother tongue learning and ECD.
