Abstract:
Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a large vessel vasculitis that involves the aorta, its major branches and pulmonary arteries. Diagnosis of TA during childhood remains challenging due to the non-specific symptoms. We report a six years age boy with unresolved hypertension who was later diagnosed as childhood TA. Oral corticosteroid was started 2mg/kg/day. TA is rare in children; Childhood TA must be considered in children who present with, hypertension and increased acute phase reactants.

AbstractTakayasu arteritis is a chronic, idiopathic, granulomatous vasculitis involving the aorta, its major branches, and occasionally the pulmonary arteries. Although rare in children, it is the third most common vasculitis in the paediatric population. Although aneurysmal disease has been reported in adults with Takayasu arteritis, it is a rare entity in children. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy with a giant ascending and arch aneurysm that necessitated follow-up surgery for a new aneurysm and occlusive disease. Abstract:
We have reviewed 31 patients with Takayasu’s arteritis followed at two paediatric nephrology units in Gauteng, South Africa over a 15 year period. There were 25 black patients, 4 white patients and 2 patients of mixed race. The mean age at diagnosis was 8.42 ± 3.59 (range 2.4 - 14.5, median 8) years. The most common presenting sign was hypertension, followed by cardiac failure, bruits and absent pulses. The Mantoux test was strongly positive in 27 patients (90%, control population 5%). Markers of activity included a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate (23 patients) or Gallium single photon

Arterial diseases are heavily intertwined with atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease and the presence of both symptomatic and asymptomatic peripheral artery diseases is known to affect the rate of cardiovascular events and deaths. Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in selected populations is also a major issue for the cardiologist. Additionally, intima-media thickness and ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurements, screening for carotid or femoral plaques, and new techniques looking at the rigidity and elasticity of arteries may further help with risk stratification, especially i

Large-vessel vasculitis includes giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu’s arteritis (TAK). GCA affects patients aged over 50, mainly of white European ethnicity. GCA occurs together with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) more frequently than expected by chance. In both conditions, females are affected two to three times more often than males. GCA mainly involves large- and medium-sized arteries, particularly the branches of the proximal aorta including the temporal arteries. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been causally linked to a variety of renal diseases, the most common being glomerular diseases and systemic autoimmune disease. Membranous nephropathy (MN) is the commonest HBV-associated glomerulonephritis (HBV-GN), followed by membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, immunoglobulin (Ig)-A nephropathy, and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Polyarteritis nodosa is a rare manifestation. The incidence of HBV-associated renal diseases seems to be decreasing with the introduction of vaccination programmes.HBV-
