Abstract:
While it is generally agreed that family time nourishes the young, gives purpose to those in middle years and accompanies the elders, the reality is that family time competes with contemporary social trends such as increased use of social media, the reality of dispersed families, or contends with the need or wish of caregivers to work outside the home; all of which create a life-in-the-fast-lane pace of living. However, “hearth-time”, as a metaphor for a warm place to arrive at and feel a sense of belonging, is alive with potential in Aotearoa New Zealand. This paper aims to identify and highlight the potentials that support the benefits of the hearth and time spent together and, by reviewing the origins and purpose of the hearth, build awareness of already existing hearth potentials; including our consulting rooms and the hearth-tending dynamics that abide within. To support the notion that hearth and subsequent primacy of heartfelt experiences needs more centrality in our homes, communities and even our thinking, I will draw on and extrapolate from the Greek myth of Hestia, Virgin Goddess of the hearth, drawing parallels between the principles of the myth and the value our profession and cultures offer. Abstract:
The construction of The Engineering Materials Diffractometer, TAKUMI of J-PARC has been finished on March 2009, and the commissioning has been started from September 2008 being parallel with the final stage of the construction. In the commissioning, after checking the validity and the stability of the detectors and the data acquisition system, powder diffraction data of an austenitic steel alloy with 10 mm diameter without beam collimation (high intensity mode) was measured, and the resolution Δd/d of 0.4% was confirmed, as designed. Further commissioning was done also with 2 mm diameter of annealed piano wire with combination of beam collimation (high resolution mode), and the resolution Δd/d of less than 0.2% was confirmed to be achieved. TAKUMI adopted an event mode data recording method. It was found that the recording method is very useful to manipulate data as we like, for instance, detector range, time of flight binning width and time resolved data, even the experiment has been finished.

Abstract:
The Engineering Materials Diffractometer “TAKUMI” is designed and has been constructed at Materials & Life Science Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) to conduct various kinds of studies on materials science and engineering and to promote industrial applications, related with strain measurements. The commissioning of TAKUMI has been started from September 2008, and several user programs have been done. In the commissioning, a resolution Δd/d at high resolution mode (with incident beam collimation) of less than 0.2% was achieved in a diffraction experiment using 2 mm diameter thick annealed piano wire. The d-range measured by TAKUMI with single pulse frame, i.e. standard operation, was confirmed to be 0.05 nm to 0.27 nm, showing that the optimum range for materials research is covered by this machine. TAKUMI adopted an event mode data recording method. It was found that the recording method is very useful to manipulate data as we like, for instance, detector range, time of flight binning width and time resolved data, even after the experiment has been finished.

Abstract:
The residual stress is one important factor causing deformation and distortion. A mathematical model is presented. It predicts the surface residual-stress caused by end-milling. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with the Takushi method is used to design experiment. The variance analysis (ANOVA) is conducted to determine the adequacy of the model. It is shown that the model offering good correlation between the experimental and predicted results, is useful in selecting suitable cutting parameters for milling aluminium alloy 6061.

Researches to study internal stress/strain behaviors in industrial superconducting composites have been started at TAKUMI of J-PARC, as soon as the completion of TAKUMI construction. Preliminary results obtained from strains measurements during tensile deformation of Nb3Sn strands and YBa2Cu3O7tapes, strains measurements during heating of Nb3Sn strands and residual strains measurements in a Nb3Sn Cable-In-Conduit Conductors are briefly described. The results can demonstrate possibilities of neutron engineering diffraction to solve problems in industrial superconducting composites by using J-PARC high flux neutron beam, even the volume fractions of superconducting phases in the composites are small and the superconducting phases locate inside the real components.

Abstract:
Understanding of key character attributes in foreign film may be reduced when perception is dependent on subtitles. This research aimed to validate a reception-based method for empirically measuring functional equivalence of character voice in subtitled film. Participants watched a Japanese film excerpt, with or without English subtitles, and rated their impressions of the central character (Takuji) on 16 character descriptors (8 antonym pairs), identified by the author as important for understanding Takuji. Perceptions of Takuji’s personality were compared between Japanese and English speakers in two studies (Study 1, N = 49, 28 Japanese, 21 English; Study 2, N = 53, 23 Japanese, 30 English). Both studies involved assessment of Takuji by Japanese speakers (no subtitles) and English speakers (English subtitles). Study 2 attempted to improve inter-item reliability and equivalence between languages by using more direct antonyms and longer descriptors than Study 1. Results from both studies established significant differences in character perceptions between Japanese and English viewers and confirmed the reliability of Japanese intracultural perceptions. Consistency in the loss of character voice between language groups in both studies confirmed that this approach to measuring character voice has strong potential for assessing subtitling approaches that aim to address functional equivalence in character perception.

Abstract:
Internal residual stresses in the pistons of motor vehicle engines were measured to verify the accuracy of residual stresses estimated by thermal simulations. Coarse crystal grains in aluminum casting alloys frequently make it difficult to measure neutron diffraction profiles if a conventional diffractometer is used for steady reactors [1]. Therefore, the Takumi diffractometer installed at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), which is a pulse neutron source, was applied to measure them. Residual stresses in pistons determined by the method of neutron diffraction were in good agreement with those estimated through thermal simulations. We concluded from these results that the thermal simulations could be applied to designing and producing pistons. Moreover, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for aluminum-silicon casting alloy were determined by using neutron diffraction. We also verified that internal residual stresses could be measured with a tensile sample holder by using the Takumi diffractometer.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reach a deeper understanding of the Lean principle of respect for people (RFP to facilitate Lean implementation in Western organizations outside Toyota. Design/methodology/approach This study uses an interpretative, hermeneutic approach to understand the RFP concept through a literature study of existing research about Lean implementation, and an inquiry into the underlying meaning of the RFP principle, by studying sources from Toyota and discussions about the RFP principle in Japan. Findings RFP is seen as a central principle in Lean implementations, but the failure of RFP is believed to cause Lean implementations to fail. The literature about Lean discusses the RFP principle both as a general positive atmosphere and as focused on developing the work capacity of employees. By studying the sources from Toyota, it could be understood that RFP is based on ought-respect. The authors also find that RFP is related to takumi, a perfected form of craftsmanship. The authors translate the concept to English by tying it to the recent literature about craft to develop RFP as RFC – respect for craftsmanship. Research limitations/implications As this is a conceptual paper, it is difficult to translate the findings into a tool for companies and organizations to use. However, that is the point of the paper: that the most important ideas are not translatable into tools. Practical implications It is necessary in Lean implementations to connect people’s work to craftsmanship. Through a discussion of craftsmanship before Lean implementations, it might be possible to nurture an understanding of the underlying values of Lean. Originality/value The authors have not found any papers that propose takumi as the base of the RFP principle, nor as a foundational concept at Toyota. It is necessary to understand the concept of takumi, as perfection in craft, to understand the RFP principle.

Abstract:
In Japan, the genus Ectamenogonus Buysson, 1893 (tribe Megapenthini Gurjeva, 1973, subfamily Elaterinae Leach, 1815) was considered to have five species. However, the Japanese species remain unclear. The taxonomy of Japanese Ectamenogonus is revised and four species are confirmed: E. matobai (Kishii, 1973), E. miyakoensis sp. nov., E. plebejus (Candèze, 1873), and E. robustus (Kishii, 1966). Ectamenogonus matobai, E. plebejus, and E. robustus are redescribed. Ectamenogonus miyakoensis is described. Ectamenogonus yakuensis (Ôhira, 1970) and E. takumii Kishii, 2006 are synonymized with E. plebejus and E. robustus, respectively. A key to the four species in Japan is provided.

Abstract:
This article reflects upon themes and foundations of the contemporary legalism attending the resolution of aboriginal claims. It opens with a broad description of the historical foundation of that legalism in the imperial prerogative of the Crown and its continuance in the national constitutional systems of Canada and New Zealand. It then considers how that legalism, with its origination in the imperial prerogative and the ongoing comparative dimension associated with that origin, inhabits a recent local example, namely New Zealand’s Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. The article shows how this provision reflects the general features of indigenous rights' jurisprudence as it has emerged over the past 30 years: it carries residual elements of the imperial prerogative and it has a comparative element, yet it is also a peculiarly New Zealand instance that marks a new step in the jurisprudence.

Abstract:
We present effectivity of an event-recording system in neutron diffraction experiments at the Engineering Materials Diffractometer TAKUMI at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility in J-PARC. We developed an event-recording system for recording information of neutron generation and detection and sample environmental conditions like load, strain, etc. as events with synchronized timing tag across whole system, and developed a software to handle the event data. It gave us several advantages by allowing us flexible data reduction depending on users’ purposes, especially for time resolved experiments. We demonstratedin situneutron diffraction measurements using these new recording system and software to show the advantages. These new system and software are very attractive to be applied for measurements that need stroboscopic data collection such as fatigue tests.

Abstract:
The mathematical models of damageability under static and cyclic loadings are investigated. The parameters of damageability and endurance are considered necessary for the calculation of long-term durability wear and low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue, thermo-cyclic endurance and deformation as well as general models, taking into account multi-axis and multicomponent loads. The models of damageability at loading range, the probabilistic models of endurance and accumulation of damage at random influence are given. Probabilistic criteria for service life estimation and their connection with accumulated damageability are researched.
