Abstract:
This paper, besides a short introduction concerning general information on themes and the structure present in the short story collection Lo cunto de li cunti overo lo trattenemiento de’ peccerille, written by the Italian Baroque author Giambattista Basile, whose masterpiece enjoyed great fame abroad much earlier than in Italy, is concerned with the analysis of fantastic and grotesque elements which generally characterise oral tradition, fairy tales and myths. The above-mentioned elements were identified in the fifty short stories which Basile wrote and included in his collection. Various sources were used in the analysis, relying on myths and fairy tales with the aim of explaining the presence of the grotesque. Besides its great literary value, this collection is also of great historical importance because, just like many other examples of oral tradition, it fosters a vast span of costumes and traditions that are typical of the Mediterranean folklore. From one tale to another, the collection slowly but surely reveals the Mediterranean identity of the people from the South of Italy and explains the function of the grotesque and its didactic purpose.

Abstract:
AbstractAgencies in charge of flood management use disaster reports (DRs) as the preferred source of information on past flooding events. A systematic survey of DRs prepared by Italian agencies suggests that DRs could be widely enhanced in view of targeting more effective communication to citizens, reinforcing the communication pillar in civil protection planning and management, and improving the resilience of the population to extreme events. Without loss of the rigor and details required for all the usual technical uses of DRs, we suggest recompiling them in the form of “disaster tales” (DTs), as tools that offer wider knowledge of the events to improve people’s preparedness and self-protection behavior. Recent major flooding events have demonstrated the communication potential that videos and pictures taken by citizens have for risk perception and disaster preparedness. By watching and listening to what has happened the communication recipient can better understand the feelings of the people experiencing an emergency. The structure of the improved reports, we suggest, will finally integrate data, graphs, and maps with interactive tools and be able to present handier multimedia views of the events. Application to three case studies of flooding in Italy illustrates how to concretely implement the suggested disaster reports to create more readily accessible disaster tales.

AbstractA single fragment of a thirteenth-century Hebrew translation of an Arthurian romance is testimony to the familiarity of Jews in Italy with the popular tales of King Arthur. The translator is a learned jew, well-versed in Hebrew, scripture and exegesis, and yet his translation is a classic example of a chivalric romance set in a culture far removed from that of its translator and its possible readers.

Vintaloro, Giordano <1977&gt. "Teaching English in Italy: A Tale of Two Systems." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/18686.

Full text
Abstract:
English is today’s global language, mother tongue to almost 400 million people in the world and studied and used as a second language by roughly 2 billion. But numbers alone do not account for its importance and preference as the world’s lingua franca. What makes its studying profitable is certainly its value for time/money spent: being a language structurally poor and highly scalable, it requires little effort on the part of an inexperienced learner to grasp its basic grammar and vocabulary, while compensating more motivated learners with increasing possibilities of expression in specialized areas. Concerning grammar and syntax, English is among the simplest languages in the world, and though the idea of simplicity is subjective and debatable, when contrasted to Italian grammatical and syntactical variations one cannot but recognize its straightforwardness. Why is it, then, that the performances in English of Italian students are so bad, whatever the survey? And how can they be improved? In this work, we are going to investigate the linguistic reasons – and the tentative learning solutions – to such poor understanding. We think that one of the main reasons for Italians not performing well in English – or, for that matter, in all languages – might be correlated both to the texts they use and to their not knowing formally the Italian language they otherwise use very proficiently. A review of textbooks, grammatical theories and syntax findings will be taken into account to show that English, in the end, is never presented to students, especially the youngest ones, in contrast to the Italian syntax or marketed as a simpler language than Italian. Rather, and especially because textbooks and grammars do not take into account learners’ first languages, it looks like just a subject that “must” be learnt because compulsory in the syllabus, thus depressing the motivation factor in students. We propose some contrastive grammar points that might be introduced in English classes to Italian-speaking students, together with a motivation-building path in order to remarket English as a “simple”, as well as a playful, language to learn, detaching somewhat from the idea of “duty” or “usefulness” which is today dominant.

Abstract:
Through a multidisciplinary approach that draws on literary analysis, on philosophy and anthropology, the author of this thesis reed the texts by Italo Calvino with the aim to open a debate on highly topical themes such as storytelling, identity construction, interpretation. The postmodern myth about the dissolution of identity and emancipatory power of digital technologies is revealed today as a false myth and issues that seemed buried reappear in all their urgency. By refusing the interpretation that makes Italo Calvino one of the apostles of postmodernism, the reading of his writings is the opportunity to articulate a critical reflection on contemporary reality. The first part of the work is a theoretical reflection that proposes a general design on the anthropological function of the narrative and the social role of literary knowledge. The second part relates this reflection to the work of Calvino and his vision of literature as a tool to put into question the ideas passively received and to build a critical attitude towards the world

Abstract:
Starting from a simple observation of apparent neglect, this thesis aims to explore the heritage of the land of Villa Ada, a city park in Rome Italy. To do so, this study relates historical narratives regarding this piece of land, from the earliest human presence to formation of the current park. The narratives help engage the reader with the past of this land, and to anchor it into the current landscape. An online survey was conducted to address how the park is perceived today and what meaning the visitors and neighbors associate to it. By connecting the past to the present, and then looking forward, this thesis can contribute in opening a discussion about Villa Ada’s fate and the strategies that can be implemented for its effective long-term management.

Abstract:
The European Union expanded from its first conceptualization as an economic union hedging possible German expansion to encompass policy areas traditionally controlled by the state. One of these areas—immigration and asylum—is closely associated with ideas of state identity and citizenship, and is an area in which states have been unwilling to cede control. Two member states—Italy and Spain—have many similarities, one of which is significant issues in regard to large and undocumented migration but, despite that, took quite different policy directions vis-à-vis the EU’s proposed immigration and asylum norms. This research examines Italy and Spain using Knill and Lehmkuhl’s mechanisms of Europeanization during three policymaking timeframes in order to determine how and why these states have taken divergent paths. This thesis found that different mechanisms were used during different periods and that counterintuitive to expected findings, the weakest mechanism is dominant during the current era.

Abstract The Geographical situation of Italy and its commercial connections during the Middle Ages would lead us to expect a large foreign element in its popular tales. This foreign element, it is hardly necessary to say, is almost exclusively Oriental, and was introduced either by direct communication with the East, or indirectly from France, which received it from Spain, whither it was brought by the Saracens. Although this Oriental element is now perfectly popular, it is, as far as its origin is concerned, purely literary.

Abstract The tale of St Cecilia that is assigned to the Second Nun is presumably the same ‘Lyf of Seynt Cecile’ that Chaucer lists among his works in both versions of the prologue to the Legend of Good Women (F. 426, G. 416). It must therefore have been written before 1386-7, and, in view of its borrowings from Dante in the Prologue, after Chaucer’s first visit to Italy in 1373. Although there is no proof that Prologue and Tale were written as a unit, it is unlikely that the Tale was composed any earlier than this, since its use of rhyme royal is typical of Chaucer’s work in the later 1370s and 1380s.

Abstract:
Abstract People in Maryland knew something was up when the snows of late spring were brown, blue, even red. It was 1816, an unusually cold year. Brown snow fell in Hungary that year, and for the citizens of Taranto in southern Italy, where any snow is unusual, the red and yellow snows that season caused consternation and alarm. The world had gone awry. “During the entire season,” wrote one observer, “the sun arose each morning as though in a cloud of smoke, red and rayless, shedding little light or warmth and setting at night behind a thin cloud of vapor, leaving hardly a trace of its having passed over the face of the Earth.” In New England, 1816 was called “the Year Without a Summer” and also, with Yankee wryness, “Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death.” As the spring wore on into summer, there were successive cold waves and frosts every month. We know just how cold because the presidents of Yale University during this period-a succession of clergymen and scholars-were willing to rise each morning at 4:30 to read and record the temperature.

The main argument of the chapter is the analysis of the reading and writing behaviour on Wattpad during the phases of lockdown in Italy for the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic represents the first great event of ‘data society' reactions making several authors reflect on various aspects and thoughts about social impact of tech ecosystems. Nowadays, it becomes essential to understand the role that digital technologies and media have had to soothe feelings related to social isolation and physical distancing measures. Thus, as widely acknowledged, besides providing data for social research in many aspects of life, the digital context also suggests above all innovated methods enforced by the physical distancing. This research has explored about 600 stories edited on Wattpad that have been selected through the query “Covid.” The aim of the analysis is to map collective imaginary of users about the COVID-19 pandemic within a digital medium for fanfiction, combining three fundamental approaches of digital methods.

Abstract:
In Italy, K-12 teachers and school institutions’ digital comptencies were under the average in the OECD Countries (Talis Survey, 2018), and they struggled during the lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forever changed the way in which the didactic is provided. The University of Foggia Learning Science hub (LSh), in Italy, works on designing and planning new methodologies to teach digital skills to pre-service teachers (especially special needs teachers), in order to enhance their knowledge and use of digital skills in planning and providing interventions, lessons and courses. To guide the designing and planning activities, we have administered the DigComp 2.2, the newest version of the self-report questionnaire of the Digital Competence Framework for Citizens created by the European Commission, to 338 teachers attending a specialization course to become special needs teachers at the University of Foggia in the current Academic Year (2022/2023).In the present study, the collected results of the survey will be analyzed and discussed, becoming the cornerstone of LSh research in this field. At the end of the specialization course, the survey will be proposed again, to compare teachers’ digital skills at the beginning and the end of the course.

Abstract:
In the reform of the Italian school system, a new pedagogical point of view has shifted attention away from content and skills and toward competencies. Also contributing to the proposal of a new mathematical curriculum is a new way of looking at mathematics that takes globalised societal needs into consideration. This paper describes the role of the Italian Statistical Society (SIS) in proposing knowledge and skills of the “Data and predictions” nucleus, which has emerged as one of the basic themes in the new mathematics curriculum. We present the guidelines which have been implemented to enhance the visibility of statistics and probability in the mathematical curriculum, taking into account the results of some recent research on statistics education carried out in Italy.

Abstract:
Storytelling is the process of using fact and narrative to communicate something to the audience. The first approach to storytelling takes place as children, with the dual purpose of imagining a space-time different from reality, and secondly that of establishing contact with one’s parents, who are required to commit themselves daily, to transmit values and teachings. Popular myths and legends perform four functions that allow human beings to understand themselves, others, the mysteries of life and the universe that surrounds them (Atkinson, 2002). These functions are: − the psychological function: it helps the person to define himself more clearly thanks to the possibility of reordering and deciphering experiences; − the social function: allows the person to understand what he has in common with others and what distinguishes him; − the cosmological-philosophical function: it supports the person in having a clearer vision of her role in the world, − the mystical-religious function: it allows the person to feel awe, wonder, humility and gratitude towards the mysteries that surround them. More and more small and large companies are engaging in a marketing activity called content marketing, considering the idea that storytelling is the key to attracting and retaining customers, especially in culturally far-away markets. Storytelling marketing is a description where the company combines the company’s identity with the company’s philosophy to create a product or service activity (Salzer-Morling & Stannegard, 2004). In fact, with the global financial crisis of 2009, investors reduced their investments in communication, especially the budget allocated to television (-3.1% in 2011). Conversely, the internet grew (+12.3%) (Nielsen, 2012). But how to communicate a product to a different culture not sharing the same ideas, symbols, actions and dispositions of the company? This study aims to analyze which strategies have been applied in the storytelling of typically “Made in Italy” food products and representative of the Italian gastronomic heritage towards Asia. Briefly, the research aims to answer the following questions: RQ 1: Which strategies have been adopted by small-medium-large enterprises in order to promote Italian products into culturally distant markets? RQ 2: Which strategies are effective, in order to be considered also for future business? The research is therefore based on an analysis of the literature on storytelling as a marketing strategy and then goes on to observe some case studies.

Abstract:
The idea of re-injecting into a gas turbine cycle the steam generated by the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is a well-established practice, especially in small-medium size cogeneration plants operating under variable heat demand. Power augmentation, electrical efficiency increase, NOx reduction and operating flexibility are the most obvious advantages brought about by steam injection. On the other hand, the discharge to the ambient of the injected steam has two major drawbacks: (i) a relevant water consumption and (ii) the large thermal loss related to the latent heat of steam. The addition of a recuperator downstream of the HRSG, whereby steam condensation takes place, can solve both problems, by achieving very high first-law efficiencies (over 100%, if reference is made to the lower heating value) and the integral recovery of water. The present paper describes the design philosophy and the operational experience of a cogeneration plant where such a condensation is accomplished. To the Authors’s knowledge, it is the first time in the world that this is achieved with gas turbine exhausts. The plant is located inside the “CARROZZERIA BERTONE”, a car manufacturing factory near Turin, Italy. It was designed to fulfill all the energy needs of the factory: it supplies all the electricity, steam and hot water required by the industrial process and during peaking hours, sells excess electricity to the national grid, at special increased tariffs offered to energy-saving plants in Italy. The plant erection (including the recuperator/condenser) was completed in December 1992; commercial operation began in February 1993.

The Botanic Gardens of Padua, Italy (Orto Botanico di Padova) were founded by the University of Padua in 1545 for medicinal plant research. Located south of the Basilica of Sant’Antonio, the herbarium takes the form of a circle divided into four quadrants each containing a carefully curated arrangement of specimens. The herbs and plants in the garden, imported from all over the world, were used to train medical students to identify specific species for medical and therapeutic remedies. ¹ Because of the rarity of the specimens housed inside, the Orto Botanico was fortified against theft with a circular stone wall, revealing how valuable both the botanical specimens and associated medical knowledge was at the time. Such ideal Renaissance botanical gardens performed two functions: rationalizing the natural world into an organized and carefully sorted collection, while also producing an exclusive space for biomedical knowledge production. The organization of the plant species within the walled space reflects the development of pharmaceutical technology in the 16th century, performatively embodying the knowledge structures of botanical medicine to function as a pharmaceutical laboratory.²

Abstract:
Historical and cartographic research about the ghost domus built by Frederick II in Principatus et Terra Beneventana regionDuring his reign Frederick II built a series of representative fortified constructions in southern Italy, and after reinforcing the defence line of the border with the State of the Church, he decided to build many residential estates called domus or palacium in the fundamental medieval textual source of Statutum de reparatione castrorum. This research is focused on the study of the landscape in the ancient region of Principatus et Terra Beneventana during the thirteenth century: it is noticed the presence of five imperial domus cited in the Statutum with the name domus Castellucci Battipallae, castrum et palacium Sarni, domus imperatoris in Ebulo, domus imperatoris Apicii and the Castel Belvedere Marano palace. Every domus was studied through a historical and cartographic analysis, and in case of the structure is not recognised on the territory it was organized a landscape analysis in order to propose a hypothetical position. The data that was gathered into ArcGIS software to define the probable locations of the ghost domus were the detailed routes of ancient roads related to the positions of the casalia (little rural communities that paid taxes to maintenance of the royal structures), the Church properties, the urban site, and the other castra and domus.

Abstract:
The Mediterranean Sea can be taken as a good example of the advantage of people transportation by water, in order to reduce pollution. This is mainly due to historical reasons, in fact the ashore private transportation along coasts of Italy, France, Spain, Slovenia, Croazia etc, has been developed during centuries on the basis of Roman Empire roads, and furtherly with development of railways, offering basically 2 different ways of transport. But recent solutions and studies shows the possibility to give a significant contribution to the reduction of emissions by the use of appropriate vessels. In fact, the present generation of propulsion system in marine application, and the developments of hybrid propulsion, with new technologies for batteries, makes possible to build a vessel with a significant reduction of pollution. The author, after studying also, as a benchmark, the transportation used on main Italian Lakes, and using his experience with other vessel, also hydrofoil and fast vessels, consider a case study of transportation applied to Ligurian an Tirrenic sea, by the use of a fleet of fast vessels, capable to carry 350-400 passengers at an average speed of 22-24 knot, comparing the fuel consumption and the cost of each vessel with the average capability and price of a train and comparing the fuel consumptions of the vessels with the total amount of fuel used by the amount of private cars used to move the same amount of people. The study takes in consideration also the average sea condition, to demonstrate that especially in the area considered, a similar service can guarantee a long-term usage. The result of the study shows how is possible to adopt a significant benefit for the environment, due the possibility now offered to use e-fuels, or green fuels, to reduce the ashore facilities, no need of bridges, tunnels, road etc.

Abstract:
The main objective of the study is to reveal the specifics of the functioning of the metaphor “war against coronavirus” in Ukrainian mediatized discursive practices of 2020-2021 compared to the trends of using this metaphor in the media environment of Western countries. A research methodology is based on the approach of critical discourse analysis. The work also takes into account the results of the study of the «war against coronavirus» metaphor, conducted using the materials of public discourses in Italy, Bulgaria, and Greece. A comparative analysis of the specifics of the functioning of this metaphor in mediatized discursive practices was carried out by the author of the article as part of a joint study of an international team of scientists – a contextualized online dictionary «In Other Words» (https://www.iowdictionary.org). Mediatized discursive practices mean communications with a mass audience through various media platforms, i.e., not only through mass media, but also with the use of blogs, social networks, messengers, video hosting, etc. The findings of the study of “war” metaphors in the domestic official discourse on the problems of combating the Covid-19 pandemic during 2020-2021 are based on the analysis of public speeches and greetings presented on the official website “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Official Internet representation”, as well as interviews of the President with leading domestic and foreign publications. The result of the research is the conclusion that, in general, the metaphor “war against the coronavirus” has not gained such widespread use in Ukrainian official, political, and media discursive practices as in Western countries. This is due to the fact that starting in 2014, Ukraine repels the military aggression of the Russian Federation in the east of the country. Therefore, in 2020–2021, the word war was actively used in the public and personal discourses of Ukrainians primarily not in a metaphorical, but in a direct, denotative sense: war as an armed struggle in the east of Ukraine. Key words: Covid-19, metaphor “war against coronavirus”, political discourse, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, mediatized discursive practices, critical discourse analysis.
