Abstract:
The Division of Applied nuclear physics at Uppsala university, isregularly performing high-precision measurements on isomeric fissionyield ratios (IYR). Its aim is to explore the physics behind nuclearfission, in particular how angular momentum is generated. Thedepartment has developed a method to obtain the root mean square(rms) values of the primary fission fragment angular momentumdistribution (Jrms). However, several assumptions are made in themodel; thus this project aims to assess the sensitivity of the modelparameters. In particular, the focus is on assessing the mean andwidth of the excitation energy distribution, as well as thecorrelation between the excitation energy and the angular momentum. The task is to implement a method that builds upon the previousmodel. The method that was implemented is based on random sampling, which randomises values of the parameters in a specific rangedepending on the type of distribution.Three types of distributions (Normal, Rayleigh and Poisson) of theexcitation energy were tested, and it seemed to have little effecton the system. The fact that the distributions are symmetric orantisymmetric seemed to have negligible impact. The nucleus that was studied was 134I after the fission process withparent nucleus 235U in the thermal energy range. The IYR was plottedagainst four parameters: Jrms, a proportionality constant (A)between the energy and angular momentum, the intrinsic energy (Eint)and the spread of the energy (E).Their mean values and spread wasacquired from a fission simulations software called GEF. Using theseas inputs to another software TALYS, one can acquire the isomericyield ratios (IYR) for the nucleus with different neutron channels.Jrms has the most impact, and had a clear interval which gave a IYRvalue close to experiments. The three other parameters showed noclear correlation which results in the conclusion: the IYR says verylittle about the fragments excitation energy but quite a lot aboutits angular momentum in the case of 134I with the assumptions made.

Abstract:
The general fission process is well known and is applied in nuclear power plants all over the world. However many properties of fission fragments are still not well understood. The angular momentum distribution of fission fragments is an important property to gain a better understanding of the fission process, and that can be derived indirectly from isomeric yield ratios. The goal of this project has been to develop a script in Python that runs the nuclear reaction code TALYS with the Total Monte Carlo method to calculate the isomeric yield ratio. The script generates a matrix consisting of excitation energies and angular momenta that is provided to TALYS. One matrix corresponds to one calculation of the isomeric ratio. Thus, the dependency of the isomeric yield ratio on these matrices can be observed. After looking into the matrices, the dependencies of the isomeric yield ratios on the excitation energies and the angular momentum distribution are observed. In this project, the calculated isomeric yield ratios are compared with the experimental value obtained from an experiment conducted in August of 2019 at the IGISOL-JYFLTRAP facility in Jyväskylä, Finland. It is worth mentioning that, fission system is of Uranium-238 which was induced by a proton beam at an energy of 25 MeV. The dependency of the isomeric yield ratio (IYR) on the angular momentum and the excitation energy has been investigated. However, it has proved more difficult than expected, to deduce an estimation for the angular momentum distribution. Another finding of this project is that the two codes used, GEF and TALYS sometimes produce inconstant results.

New radioactive isotopes for nuclear medicine can be produced using particle accelerators. This is one goal of ARRONAX, a high energy – 70MeV – high intensity – 2 _ 350mA – cyclotron set up in Nantes. A priority list was established containing b􀀀 – 47Sc, 67Cu – b+ – 44Sc, 64Cu, 68Ge/68Ga, 82Sr/82Rb – and a emitters – 211At. Among these radioisotope tshe Scandium 47 and the Copper 67 have a strong interest in targeted therapy. The optimization of their productions required a good knowledge of their cross-sections but also of all the contaminants created during irradiation. We launched on ARRONAX a program to measure these production cross-sections using the Stacked-foils’ technique. It consists in irradiating several groups of foils – target, monitor and degrader foils – and in measuring the produced isotopes by g-spectrometry. The monitor – natCu or natNi – is used to correct beam loss whereas degrader foils are used to lower beam energy. We chose to study the natTi (p,X) 47Sc and 68Zn (p,2p) 67Cu reactions. Targets are respectively natural Titanium foil – bought from Goodfellow – and enriched Zinc 68 deposited on Silver. In the latter case, Zinc targets were prepared in-house – electroplating of 68Zn – and a chemical separation between Copper and Gallium isotopes has to be made before g counting. Cross-section values for more than 40 different reactions cross-sections have been obtained from 18MeV to 70MeV. A comparison with the TALYS code is systematically done. Several parameters of theoretical models have been studied and we found that is not possible to reproduce faithfully all the cross-sections with a given set of parameters

Abstract:

In the context of the development of generation IV nuclear reactors, precise nuclear data are needed. In this work, we study in particular inelastic scattering cross section for 233U and 238U nuclei. From the analysis of data from GRAPhEME, an experimental device combining prompt γ- spectroscopy and time of flight, we obtained for the first time 12 233U(n, n’γ) reaction cross sections. Cross sections modelling has been performed for both isotopes (233U et 238U) with the nuclear reaction code TALYS. In the 238U case, the implementation of new model in the code highlighted better agreement calculation/experiment for (n, n’γ) reaction cross sections. Despite this result, no change in the total inelastic scattering cross section has been seen. Finally, a cross sections uncertainties evaluation has been done with CONRAD, comparing different methods of propagating experimental uncertainties to model parameters via the Bayesian inference

“Images haunt… Images are not quite ideas, they are stiller than that, with less implication outside themselves. And they are not myth, they do not have that explanatory power; they are nearer to pure story. Nor are they always metaphors; they do not say this is that, they this is. In the nineteenth century one would have said that what compelled about them was a sense of the eternal. And it is something like that, some feeling in the arrest of the image that what perishes and what lasts forever have been brought into conjunction, and accompanying that sensation is a feeling of release from the self.” Robert Hass

Abstract:
Small Tales is a 2D video game with hand drawn and watercolor painted assets that incorporates a series of vignettes centered on the collection of artifacts. Growing up, I experimented with and  investigated a wide variety of media, such as Alice and GameMaker but ultimately decided to  sharpen my fine arts skills and incorporate them in to video game engines in this thesis. A variety  of point and click adventure games such as the King's Quest and Monkey Island series inspired  the development of this game due to their emphasis on narrative and player interaction. This thesis developed from a series of earlier projects that helped me settle on four  primary objectives: vignetted narratives, player choice and consequences, visual and text  components working harmoniously, and replayability via randomized generation. A Processing  sketch emphasized the need for strong visual assets in addition to text-based narrative; in  addition to replayability via randomized strings or text for a unique narrative every iteration.  Afterwards, a Twine game further encouraged visual assets working with text, but solidified a  foundation in player choice and consequences. Finally, my first experiment in Unity with the  Adventure Creator helped me establish a functional workflow to achieve my four goals.   Small Tales itself revolves around a series of vignettes connected by the world of the  player character. Players wander an unfamiliar neighborhood to find artifacts that at the end of  the game reveal tiny stories about other worlds. The game was received well by players during  my defense for its ethereal atmosphere and for creating an engaging story world. But a handful  of suggestions from these same players could push the game to be even better. Small Tales will be available online after these critiques are taken under consideration.

Abstract:
INTENT OF BINARY TALES EXHIBITION "Binary Tales", my MFA exhibition offers an alternative point of view of diversity and immigration to provoke thought in the audience. I'm gifted with the ability to express myself through the visual arts in the medium of metal. I also have the experiences to carry a message of hope and exploration through the tale of my immigration and assimilation in the great American culture. Using my abilities and experience, I seized the opportunity of excitement and hope generated by the President's leadership to further breakdown cultural barriers. "Binary Tales" guided the viewer in a vicarious journey through my life story as an immigrant trying to fit into American society and provide chances to understand and consider issues of culture; with particular attention to the effects of war and immigration. Perhaps the audience can then take that understanding and apply it to current issues of war and immigration. INTENT OF BINARY TALES THESIS This thesis paper is intended to supplement Binary Tales the Exhibition in two ways. First, by way of Chapter I and II, this thesis shall serve as a conceptual guide and contextual supplement to the artworks in the exhibition. Second, the rest of this thesis will supplement the exhibition by further detailing the philosophy that produced the work from the philosophy's development, to its current definition, and to its application.

Full text
Abstract:

The political development in the Western world is transforming. Political party participation decreases as well as other non-profit associations. This individualistic development is described as a threat to democracy. Nevertheless, some scholars argue that the political participation is a transformation into a new type of participation that instead could strengthen the democracy.

The political parties are the foundation of the democratic system and they receive their power by representing the citizens in the decision making process. Yet, the parties transform from organisations with a close linkage to their core groups, to catch-all organisations that aim to maximise votes. Since the goal for parties is to attain as much power as possible, new parties and other political actors have effectively been kept out of political system.

The individualistic development is observed through the political consumerism in this thesis. The political consumption is described as a political activity where consuming is used as the mean to impact. To actively select products that represent certain values influence companies to work for those values. It is a free individualistic movement without rules. If asked to describe the typical political consumer it would be a young female with a higher education and thus, an income above average. The political consumer prefers to be involved in issues of personal interest rather than broad party politics. Companies are believed to contain a great deal of power in society and must therefore also obtain responsibility.

The problems associated to political consumerism are connected to poor information. Citizens may make wrong political decisions since the information presented to them is poor or faulty. Another problem is the lack of tools to measure political consumption; we do not know how important it is in comparison to other political activities.

It is difficult to compare traditional politics with political consumerism since they target different issues and work in different ways. However, political consumerism is not a threat to traditional politics and should instead be recognised as a compliment.

Abstract:
TEETH AND OTHER TALES is a novella and a collection of short stories that explore the blurry lines between illusion and reality. Teeth, the novella, is narrated backward in time, chronicling the life of Lucy from the age of sixty-five back to seventeen. After years of surviving an oppressive marriage, Lucy escapes her husband, but in doing so abandons her three children. In order to rationalize her decisions, Lucy uses selective memory to create her own reality to the extent that she comes to believe her own delusions. The four short stories in the collection feature protagonists who create their own personal myths and struggle to protect their distorted truths, with mixed results. These struggles between the “real,” as conventionally defined, and personal fictions are complicated by elements of magical realism and surrealism. The stories were influenced by the short fiction of Nikolai Gogol, Franz Kafka and Haruki Murakami.

Abstract:
How should central banks conduct and communicate their policies to serve the goal of stabilizing the macroeconomy? This thesis -- consisting of three self-contained essays on dynamic macroeconomics -- is mainly intended as a progress report on exploring the normative aspect of monetary policy. The main result of the first essay is, that in the presence of idiosyncratic risk, the public revelation of information about uncertain aggregate outcomes can be detrimental. By announcing informative signals on non-insurable aggregate risk, the policy maker distorts agents'' insurance incentives and increases the riskiness of the optimal allocation that is feasible in self-enforceable arrangements. We consider a monetary authority that may reveal changes in the inflation target, and document that the negative effect of distorted insurance incentives can very well dominate conventional effects in favor for the release of better information. In the second essay, we study optimal monetary policy with the nominal interest rate as the single policy instrument. Firms set prices in a staggered way without indexation and real money balances contribute separately to households'' utility. The optimal deterministic steady state under commitment is the Friedman rule for a broad range of parameters. Optimal monetary policy in the short run is then characterized by stabilization of the nominal interest rate instead of inflation stabilization as the predominant principle. In the third essay, I examine whether the existence and the timing of real balance effects contribute to the determination of the absolute price level. As the main novel result, I show that there exists a unique price level sequence that is consistent with an equilibrium under interest rate policy, if beginning-of-period money yields transaction services. Predetermined real money balances can then serve as a state variable, implying that interest rate setting should be passive -- a violation of the Taylor-principle.

Abstract:
This essay examines Angela Carter’s feminist rewritings of classical fairy tales. By examining the original fairy tales and comparing them to what Angela Carter published I aim to highlight a feminism that is subtle and non-binary. In the analysis I draw on ideas presented by Hélène Cixous as well as Simone de Beauvoir. Furthermore, a pedagogical reflection is included to show ways in which these stories could be incorporated in the upper- secondary school.

Abstract:
True Tales of the Atom documents the creative process in the making of the film of the same name. It describes the intent and result of each step in the filmmaking process, including esthetic, budget and technical decisions. How the inclusion of animation increased the complexity and technical demands on the postproduction. It shows the problems encountered and overcome working on a production alone. Finally, it details the successful completion primarily due to extensive preplanning. The film on which the paper is based is a non-traditional look at several little-known aspects of civilian nuclear power, with a look at the media that could have helped to shape current attitudes in the United States about the technology.

Abstract:

How do envisioning dreams like fairy tales inform the therapist’s ability to talk with their clients about dreams? Using the research methodologies of heuristics and hermeneutics, the author tended to a dream while enrolled in a graduate program in psychology. He explains his dream as an imaginative story that reflects many of the ideas and concepts of depth psychology. The mythopoetic function of the unconscious is explored in relation to archetypal, historical, and fairy tale figures appearing in the dream, such as Bilbo Baggins, Trickster, Cleopatra, the Dalai Lama, and Frederick Douglass. Threads of depth and applied psychology are woven into the discussion, creating a link between the author’s dream and fairy tales. The research suggests that dreams, when envisioned as imaginary tales, are less frightening and more palatable, inviting selfdiscovery and transformation in the process of psychotherapy.

Abstract:
My thesis compromises a variety of short stories which are modern re-writes of dark fairy tales. Fairy Tales often explore the dark side of human nature and in these stories I focus on the voices of female villains and the strange psychology which drives them. I find Fairy Tales absorbing because they reveal the vulnerabilities, dreams and fears of the human consciousness. My stories contain some satirical expositions of human nature and society. My influences are the anthology of short stories, “My mother She Killed Me and My Father He Ate Me”, The Grimm Fairy Tales (original) and The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault as well as the writing of Horacio Moya, Angela Carter and Alissa Nutting for their dark satire and mockery of social eccentricities. Kate Bernheimer’s “Form is Fairy Tale and Fairy Tale is Form” is very influential in terms of the style it recommends in writing such as: “every day magic”, “flatness” (a form of narration), abstraction and intuitive logic.

Abstract:
Urban exploration is a practice of researching, discovering and physically exploring temporary, obsolete, abandoned, derelict and infrastructural areas within built environments. Through charting the rise to prominence of a London urban exploration crew between 2008 and 2011, of which I became an active member, I posit that urban explorers are one of many groups reacting to increased surveillance and control over urban space by undertaking embodied urban interventions in the city that undermine clean spatio/temporal narratives. The primary research questions stem from my attempts to interrogate the practice from the inside out: Who are urban explorers? What does it involve? Why do they do it? What do they think they will accomplish? While the thesis focuses primarily on 220 explorations undertaken with my primary ethnographic group in London between 2008 and 2011, it also speaks to the urban exploration "scene" that has developed over the past twenty years in cities all over the world. The results that emerge from the research both compliment and complicate recent work within geography around issues of surveillance, resistance, hacking and urban community building and lays out a new account, never before outline in such detail, of the tales of urban exploration taking place in temporary cities across the globe. This visual ethnography is comprised of text (75,000 words), photographs (200) and video (10 shorts). the ethnographic video components can be found on the Place Hacking video channel located at http://vimeo.com/channels/placehacking . Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to suggest that prevailing critical approaches to Conrad's work serve to restrict interpretative possibilities rather than to free them. I argue that the segmenting methods of classical narratology have been carried over to Conradian criticism, but that these methods prove inadequate to the technical versatility of Conradian narrative. Furthermore, I suggest that these methods have sometimes been applied inflexibly, to the extent that some of Conrad's most technically original works have been condemned simply because they do not adhere to the narrative structures narratology privileges. I examine in detail Conrad's use, and critical responses to that use, of non-linear chronology, variable perspective, narrative levels, personalised narrators, fragmented narrative, binary thematics and the quintessentially Conradian technique delayed decoding. My illustrations are not drawn exclusively from Conrad's major works, but from wherever I find narrative originality. Consequently, as well as references to many of Conrad's minor works, there are extended discussions of focalisation in the short story 'The Partner', of narrative levels in 'The Tale', and of narrative multiplicity in The Nigger of the ·Narcissus~. My conclusion is that Conrad was a more technically inventive writer than has been recognised, and that that invention tends one way: away from the notion of a single truth hidden at the heart of a work, and towards an art recognising the limits of representation. Many of the techniques I discuss can be seen as provoking the reader to see differently: incommensurable presentations of the same events from different perspectives, multiple conflicting interpretations of characters, narrators whose unreliability is explicitly highlighted rather than implied, narrative mobility, covert plotting. I suggest that in addition to asking his readers to see differently, Conrad, in his most successful works, actually requires us to be otherwise as we read.

Abstract:
The majority of interpretations of literary animals focus on the animals' metaphoric or symbolic significance, overlooking the actual animal, which often completely disappears behind its metaphoric or mythological representation. Such traditional interpretations of animals expose the dominant anthropocentric focus of the humanities in general, and literary studies in particular. Yet, even as textual representations a lot of literary animals still exhibit some basic species-specific characteristics. By analyzing selected Russian fairytales through the animal studies perspective I will show that in a lot of Russian fairytales animals exercise their agency, retain their animal specificity and are involved in complex companionate relationships with humans. Such portrayal of animals in Russian fairytales warrants identifying traditional Russian worldview as ecosystemic – in which humans are positioned on an equal plane with other living beings. Given the insufficient number of interpretive works on Russian fairytales, and the lack of work on fairytale animals, the present application of animal studies to Russian folktales can be one of the first steps to filling this niche.

Abstract:
This thesis is submitted alongside the film Forecast (2015) to be a submission for the PhD project Cantre?r Gwaelod and Tales of Inundation. The project aims in its entirety to propose film as a mode of enquiry regarding ways in which the dangers of climate change, specifically anthropogenic climate change, can be addressed in a documentary film. Using the possible allegorical power of the Welsh flood myth of Cantre?r Gwaelod, the original aim of the project was to create a documentary film which used this myth as a way to illustrate the effects of a changing climate. During the research, however, it became apparent that myth as a concept presented several points of interest which overall problematised its use in this way. Myth itself could be seen to be present in mass communication because some simplification of complex issues needs to take place in order to make this type of communication possible. Furthermore, it also became clear that the issue of climate change had to some extent been mythologised through a similar process of simplification. This project looks closely at the ways in which this tendency towards mythology in communication, especially regarding complex issues such as climate change, might, in fact hinder the communication of themes and ideas and damage the efficacy as a result. It therefore became obvious that the purpose of this project was to develop a methodology which attempted to communicate through a documentary film in a way that eschewed mythology as much as 2 possible. This written thesis looks at the ways in which this was achieved, both theoretically and practically and details extant work that serves to illustrate this.

Abstract:

"Feminine/ Feminist Reflections on Fairy Tales." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/15244.

Full text
Abstract:
Mestrado em Estudos Ingleses
To analyse some fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the perspective of modern feminism is like revising the paradigms which form our romantic expectations and illustrate psychological ambiguities that frequently confuse contemporary women. Portraits of adolescents waiting and dreaming, patterns of enchantment, and the romanticism of marriage contribute to the power of fairy tales. However, such fantasies praise the heroines’ incapacity to act independently, the reliance on exterior rescue and the binding to the father or to a prince. Although many readers recognise obvious elements of fantasy, they sometimes still identify themselves with the heroes and especially with the heroines. Unconsciously, women can transfer from the fairy tales to the real world cultural norms, which exalt passivity, dependency and self-sacrifice as feminine virtues. Intrinsically, fairy tales perpetuate the male status quo, making female subordination seem a desirable fate from which it is impossible to escape. It is this feminine perspective and feminist criticism that I intend to expose in my thesis, touching on the importance that fairy tales still have today, in the 21st century, not only on child rearing but also on the adults’ behaviour. In this thesis, I briefly explain how fairy tales emerged several centuries ago and how they evolved until our time in several versions, with several perspectives. My purpose is to analyse how fairy tales, on the one hand can influence us positively, showing us what is good and what is evil, and on the other hand, can influence us negatively because they present us with the “socially” accepted behaviours expected from women. In fairy tales, women are almost always represented as stepmothers and bad witches or as sweet, passive princesses dependent on the male image (father or prince) in order to be happy. It is this representation of female image that I intend to explore and analyse, showing my point of view of how fairy tales continue to represent behavioural models considered adequate to the female sex and to mirror a female image which is still accepted and seen as the most adequate – the image of a submissive, passive woman waiting for her prince charming to save her and bring her the desired happiness.
