Abstract:

Abstract:
Twice in the Jacob cycle in Genesis, we find a one-chapter long, self-contained story about a woman: Dinah and Tamar. The stories are almost never read together, despite their textual proximity and the clear thematic and idiomatic connections between them. Like Dinah, Tamar is a woman who finds herself in a vulnerable position outside her father's home. Like Dinah, she has unsanctioned sex. And yet, Tamar is the subject of much of her story. Dinah's is a story of rape and massacre, a story of a woman silenced even as she is ostensibly redeemed. Dinah does not act; she is acted upon or acted on behalf of. By contrast, Tamar speaks, she acts, she thinks, she conspires, she challenges. Reading intertextually, we see Genesis 38 inverts key elements of Genesis 34 in a number of ways, thereby possibly serving as a narrative correction of the earlier story.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Amnon brutally rapes his half-sister, Tamar, while Absalom, her full brother, is said to have silenced her. It is no wonder that she is desolated. However, commentators have provided two distinct interpretations in which she is either devastated by the rape or by the silencing. Since she is violated, she is disconsolate. Or in most feminist readings, Tamar is ravaged by the silencing after the event. While both readings are possible based on the different versions of the text, Tamar is never silenced. Instead, the reference to her desolation reflects the incarnation of the violation on her body; she expresses the event through her embattled body. This type of desolation is most visually demonstrated in the Academy Award winning screenplay, Manchester by the Sea, in which Lee Chandler, the main character embodies the unspeakable, the death of his three children. Both Lee and Tamar bear their stories in their silent presence.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reflects upon intertextuality or the dialogue between texts. After a survey of various views of intertextuality, a procedure for studying the intertextual relationships between biblical texts is presented. An extensive study of the dialogue between the Ruth and Tamar narratives concludes the article. The large amount of shared semantic and narratological features in these stories enable the reader to discover how Ruth and Tamar turn out to be the instruments by which Judah, Naomi and Boaz perceive and attain knowledge. As foreigners they are able to confront the insiders and to hold a mirror up to their faces. But in both stories, Ruth and Tamar disappear at the end and become ellipses in their own stories. Tamar made Judah see, Ruth made Naomi change and Boaz become aware, but their revealing activities eventually lead to their own disappearance. The mirror intended to unveil the audience has lead to the emptying of the foreigners, who do not confront, but confirm the Judahite identity.

Kelley, Donovan. "Abundance, growth and first-winter survival of young bass in nurseries of south-west England." Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 82, no. 2 (April 2002): 307–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0025315402005507.

Abstract:
0-group bass were sampled from the shallow creeks of the Tamar and Camel estuaries at regular intervals from May to September in 1981 to 2000 to measure relative year-class abundance. From 1989 onwards classes were generally strong, especially those of 1989, 1992 (Tamar only), 1995 and 1998. Sampling at age-4, before departure from the nursery at the onset of adolescent movements, gave broadly similar relativities. Numbers were greater, and growth faster, in the Tamar than in the smaller and cooler Camel. Temperature was an important factor in both abundance and growth. Occasional major differences in abundance between the two estuaries were reported. Factors which might bias the age-4 result are considered. Other estuaries on the south side of the south-west peninsula, sampled less frequently, reflected Tamar abundances; others on the north side reflected Camel abundances. Limited analysis of stomach contents of older juvenile bass often present in the same habitats revealed no evidence of cannibalism on 0-groups. The shallow creeks of the Tamar and Camel were deserted in winter but a deeper creek on the Taw, frequented throughout winter, was sampled monthly in the 1982–1996 winters to measure losses, if any, in cold periods. In the mainly mild winters, losses were infrequent and small except in the five-week cold spell of early 1986, when the 1985 class suffered an estimated 58% loss in the Taw and possible total loss in the Camel and the Tamar. Sudden heavy flooding of the estuaries caused no apparent losses when they occurred in late summer and autumn but might be damaging if they occur soon after post-larvae arrive.

Abstract:
Tamar’s rape is narrated in a conflict of interest among Amnon and Absalom. Tamar’s rape was just the beginning of the conflict among Absalom and Amnon who fought for the throne as the symbol of power. In fact, Tamar was a muted victim. Therefore, it needs a critical eye such as a feminist hermeneutic approach to re-read and reinterpret this story. Feminist hermeneutic critical is a tool to explore the hidden stories especially about women’s experiences on violence and oppression. This approach will help us to produce a theological reconstruction on the experience of Tamar’s oppression and her struggle. Through hermeneutic feminist critical, the story of Tamar and her pain will be the main concern. Tamar was no longer cry for her wounds and trauma. She will have a chance to tell her bitter experience. She will have a space to speak up and share her pain. The story of Tamar as a survivor will be remembered and celebrated as the standpoint to fight against violence in our present context. This approach also guides the church to re-thinking and re-frame its theological understanding deals to the increasing of sexual abuses against women and children. Some findings on Tamar’s story will be a reference to deconstruct the patriarchal culture and to build a theology of equality among men and women.

Full text
Abstract:
Is Tamar among the matriarchs? At first glance, not at all. She draws a striking contrast to precedent in her identity, her fertility, her breach of bridal convention, and most significantly the antagonism and absence of God in her procreative plight. Yet her story still alludes extensively to the matriarchal experience, suggesting that she is perhaps a matriarch after all, but one on whom matriarchy fits differently. This study accordingly explores how Tamar might stretch and develop matriarchal identity. In particular, it draws special attention to a resonance between her experience and a narrative trend in Genesis of divine absence and human responsibility. Exploring the conceptual possibilities of “godlessness” through the thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and other theologians who have traced the contours of God in powerlessness and suffering, this study suggests that, as a godless matriarch, Tamar is perhaps closer to God. Perhaps among the matriarchs she helps to introduce Bonhoeffer’s “God of the Bible, who gains ground and power in the world by being powerless.”

Abstract:
Abstract:
The present article aims to forecast streamflow by using artificial neural networks (ANNs), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and autoregressive moving average (ARMA). For this purpose, the daily streamflow time series of two hydrometry stations of Hajighoshan and Tamar on Gorgan River are used for two periods of 1983–2007 and 1974–2007, respectively. Root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) statistics are employed to evaluate the performance of the ANNs, ANFIS, and ARMA models for forecasting streamflow (1 day ahead). Comparison of the results reveals that the ANFIS model outperforms the ARMA model. Based on the results of validation stage, for the forecasting 1 day ahead streamflow, ANN with RMSE = 0.028 m3/s and R = 0.59 for the Hajighoshan station and RMSE = 0.013 m3/s and R = 0.44 for the Tamar station were found to be superior to the ANFIS with RMSE = 1.98 m3/s and R = 0.42 for the Hajighoshan station and RMSE = 2.18 m3/s and R = 0.22 for the Tamar station. In addition, for 2 day and 3 day ahead streamflow forecasts, the ANN models show superiority in the accuracy of forecasting streamflow compared with the ANFIS models.

Abstract:
The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet and glittered with gold and jewels and pearls, and she was holding a gold winecup filled with the disgusting filth of her prostitution; on her forehead was written a name, a cryptic name: “Babylon the Great, the mother of the prostitutes and all the filthy practices on the earth.” (Rev 17:4–5, NJB)In discussions of the ancient Near Eastern setting for the Old Testament, various aspects of Mesopotamian society and culture are nominated as the precursors of certain features of Israelite practice.
