Abstract:
Let K be a number field with ring of integers O_K and let G be a finite group.By a result of E. Noether, the ring of integers of a tame Galois extension of K with Galois group G is a locally free O_K[G]-module of rank 1.Thus, to any tame Galois extension L/K with Galois group G we can associate a class [O_L] in the locally free class group Cl(O_K[G]). The set of all classes in Cl(O_K[G]) which can be obtained in this way is called the set of realizable classes and is denoted by R(O_K[G]).In this dissertation we study different problems related to R(O_K[G]).The first part focuses on the following question: is R(O_K[G]) a subgroup of Cl(O_K[G])? When the group G is abelian, L. McCulloh proved that R(O_K[G]) coincides with the so-called Stickelberger subgroup St(O_K[G]) of Cl(O_K[G]). In Chapter 2, we give a detailed presentation of unpublished work by L. McCulloh that extends the definition of St(O_K[G]) to the non-abelian case and shows that R(O_K[G]) is contained in St(O_K[G]) (the opposite inclusion is still not known in the non-abelian case). Then, just using its definition and Stickelberger's classical theorem, we prove in Chapter 3 that St(O_K[G]) is trivial if K=Q and G is either cyclic of order p or dihedral of order 2p, where p is an odd prime number. This, together with McCulloh's results, allows us to have a new proof of the triviality of R(O_K[G]) in the cases just considered. The main original results are contained in the second part of this thesis. In Chapter 4, we prove that St(O_K[G]) has good functorial behavior under restriction of the base field. This has the interesting consequence that, if N/L is a tame Galois extension with Galois group G, and St(O_K[G]) is known to be trivial for some subfield K of L, then O_N is stably free as an O_K[G]-module.In the last chapter, we prove an equidistribution result for Galois module classes amongst tame Galois extensions of K with Galois group G in which a given prime p of K is totally split.

Abstract:
The background of this dissertation is the inverse Galois problem.
Which finite groups can occur as Galois groups of an extension of the rational field? This problem was first considered by D. Hilbert, and it still remains open.

Assume that a finite group G can be realized as a Galois group over Q. We can ask whether there exists some other finite Galois extension, with Galois group G and enjoying an additional ramification property. In this connection, several variants of the Inverse Galois Problem have been studied. In this dissertation, we shall address the following problem, posed by Brian Birch around 1994.

Tame Inverse Galois Problem. Given a finite group G, is there a tamely ramified Galois extension K/Q with Galois group G?

In this thesis we address this problem by studying the Galois representations attached to arithmetic-geometric objects such as elliptic curves, or more generally abelian varieties, and modular forms. We seek conditions that ensure that the action of the wild inertia group at all primes is trivial. Note that this strategy of constructing Galois representations such that the image of the wild inertia group at all primes is trivial can be encompassed in the general trend of constructing Galois representations with prefixed local behaviour.

This dissertation is split into two parts. In the first part, we tackle the realization of families of two dimensional linear groups over a finite field as the Galois group of a tamely ramified extension of Q. We study the Galois representations attached to elliptic curves and to modular forms. In the second part we address the problem of realizing a family of four dimensional linear groups over a prime field as the Galois group of a tamely ramified extension of Q. In this part we study the action of the inertia group upon the l-torsion points of the formal group attached to an abelian variety, and obtain a general result that allows us to control the action of the wild inertia group. We apply this result to the formal group attached to abelian surfaces. More precisely, we consider the Jacobians of bielliptic supersingular genus 2 curves, suitably chosen so that we can control the size of the image of the corresponding representation.

The main results we have obtained are the following.

Theorem. Let l be a prime number. There exist infinitely many semistable elliptic curves E with good supersingular reduction at l. The Galois representation attached to the l-torsion points of E provides a tame Galois realization of GL(2, F_l).

Furthermore, we give an explicit algorithm to construct these elliptic curves. The primes l=2, 3, 5, 7 have been considered separately.

Theorem. Let l be a prime number greater than 3. There exist infinitely many genus 2 curves C such that the Galois representation attached to the l-torsion points of the Jacobian of C provides a tame Galois realization of GSp(4, F_l).

As in the previous result, we give an explicit algorithm that enables us to construct these curves.

In addition, we have obtained tame Galois realizations of groups of the form PSL(2, F_(l^2)) for several values of l.

Abstract:
In this work we study conditions for the existence of quasi-periodic phenomena and the implications of their presence in several dynamical systems. Our main focus will be Hamiltonian dynamics where we provide criteria for the persistence of quasi-periodic motions associated to invariant resonant tori (Chapter 2), explore to what extent the existence of quasi-periodic motions characterize the system (Chapter 3) and give examples of unstable elliptic equilibria with two degrees of freedom (Chapter 4). For critical circle homeomorphisms (Chapter 5) we establish a relation between the Hausdorff dimension of their invariant measures and their rotation number. In the last part of this thesis (Chapter 6) we prove, by means of localized periodic approximations, the existence of mixing zero entropy smooth transformations on T3 whose product with themselves is loosely Bernoulli

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the second Hochschild cohomology group of all tame weakly symmetric algebras having simply connected Galois coverings and only periodic modules. These algebras have been determined up to Morita equivalence by Białkowski, Holm and Skowroński in [4] where they give finite dimensional algebras A1(λ),A2(λ),A3,...A16 which are a full set of representatives of the equivalence classes. Hochschild cohomology is invariant under Morita equivalence, and this thesis describes HH²(Λ) for each algebra Λ = A1(λ),A2(λ),A3,…,A16 in this list. We also find the periodicity of the simple modules for each of these algebras. Moreover, for the algebra A1(λ) we find the minimal projective bimodule resolution of A1(λ) and discuss the periodicity of this resolution.

Abstract:
In-channel storage and release of fine sediment and sediment-associated contaminants were investigated in the urbanised River Tame, Birmingham, UK. Few studies on sediment dynamics have been performed on urban rivers, and there is relatively little data on the distribution of contaminants between the fluvial substrate and the actively transported sediments. Furthermore little research has been performed on the role of the biofilm in regulating sediment and contaminant fluxes in rivers. The field work was conducted concurrently with water quality and flow monitoring by the Environment Agency at the furthest upstream and downstream field sites. Channel resurveying found that channel activity was low, with overall net erosion of the channel during the sampling period, potentially contributing ca. 0.61 t lan-I y-l to the actively transported sediments. Storage of fme sediment at the surface of the channel bed in the Tame was estimated at 1.01 t km-l which was low in comparison to otherUK rivers. . Sediment resuspension may have contributed an estimated 30-60% of the sediment load for intermediate flow events and 2-7% for the highest flow even~. However, suspended sediment concentrations were exceptionally high in the Tame. At the upstream reach, measurements ranged between 53-1750 mg rl during high flow events, and maximum values were two to three times higher than in other urbanised UK rivers. No exhaustion of the sediment supply was shown in the headwaters of the Tame during consecutive high flow events, emphasising the dominance ofpoint sources. Channel bed storage of fme sediment within the gravel matrix of the bed was investigated by deploying pairs of different substrate traps, buried flush with the river bed to a depth of 30 cm. The first was a standard design with rigid impermeable sides (open at the top only). The second trap, designed for this research, had collapsible sides, permitting fine sediment ingress from the surface and from within the gravels. The collapsible trap design improved connectivity with the surrounding riverbed, with higher rates of deposition than the standard design. Median accumulation rates at all sites ranged from 0.32 kg m-2 d-l (1 month) to 0.032 kg m-2 d-l (14 months) in the collapsible traps and from 0.294 kg m-2 d-l (1 month) to 0.046 kg m-2 d-l (14 months) in the impermeable traps. No evidence was found supporting the existence oflateral sediment transfer through the river gravels, although the literature has long assumed its important role in sediment fluxes within the river bed. Greater penetration of the water column into the gravels of the permeable substrate trap is suggested to enhance mechanisms of fine sediment accumulation such as filtration within the pore spaces. There was limited' resuspension of fine sediment from within the top 10 cm of the ~.. !'. substrate gravels, rather than a complete cycle of deposition and resuspension during high flow' events. Over time, retention offine sediment maybe enhanced as the availability ~fpore spaces decreases, combined with the formation of sediment seals, reducing the interaction between the water column and the bed A site-specific upper limit to the mass of fine sediment retention was observed, suggesting that the gravels took 8 months to saturate with fine sediment. Sediment Cu concentrations were exceptionally high in the Tame, with median values ranging between 348-1016 mg kg-l at the upstream and downstream reaches. Cu concentrations in the bed were an order of magnitude higher than for other urban rivers. The bed was also enriched in other heavy metals in comparison to the suspended sediment (124% for Ni and Cd to 756% for Pb) which reflected the historic nature of the pollution in the catchment. Particulate P was also high in the Tame, generally ranging between 3000-6800 mg kg-l , although median values of ca. 12800 mg kg-l were found in channel surface sediment at the upstream reach. These values exceeded safe.ty guidelines oetween three and sevenfold. Site specific factors, such as the degree of catchment urbanisation, the hydrodynamics of the cha.nnel bed, and the number and activity of point sources, were found to be the main controls on sediment-associated contkinant distribution in the Tame. The timing of sediment deposition relative to the flow cycle and the activation of point sources may also playa role, particularly for particulate P. Partic~e size and organic matter content of sediment were shown to be less important although the data were limited. No influence of the biofilm on sediment or contaminant fluxes was found in the River Tame in contrast to results from fluvarium studies, which have shown a role for the biofilm in almost every aspect of sediment dynamics. . Finally, conceptual models of sediment fluxes within engineered and natural gravel beds and of the sediment and contaminant accumulation cycle Within the substrate gravels were produced. By clarifying the processes involved in sediment and contaminant transport and storage in the River Tame, the primaIY aim ofthe research was achieved. The results have implications for the long-term storage and subsequent remobilisation of sediment and associated contaminants. In the future, as the important role of fluvial sediment in river habitat quality is recognised,. sediment sampling will play a key role in the development of sustainable management strategies for urban rivers which face similar challenges to the Tame in improving water and sediment quality. In order to assess the ecological risks of fine sediment in urban rivers, this research suggests that a comprehensive programme of surveying and sampling of sediment at different spatio-temporal scales may be necessary.

Virtual Environment Simulations (VES) are a special type of simulation, often used to implement games and serious games with virtual space representation and using both the next-event or stepped–time simulation time advance approach. An example of serious games is the simulation used to support War Games. Multiagent Based Simulation (MABS) are suitable to implement these simulations because of their ability to handle with complexity and individual actors modeling. However, when agents are responsible for advance their own simulation time, a situation similar to a parallel simulation arises. This implies in treat issues such as delays in performing scheduled actions (i.e tardiness) and its consequences in the virtual space representations. This situation is worst in Java based MABS, because of Java technology particularities. This work presents an approach to tame this tardiness and help the development of these cited VES using agent oriented paradigm.

Abstract:
Urban river research is scarce. This thesis improves aspects of water quality and physical habitat modelling for sustainable urban river environment management using the highly urbanised River Tame in the West Midlands, UK as study catchment. Specifically, it focuses on modelling at the catchment scale and during high flow discharges. The River Tame system response to rainfall precipitation is complex, with influences from the wastewater treatment acting concurrently with the intricate combined sewer system. The complexity of the system response results in disassociation of critical flows with critical water quality such as biological oxygen demand and ammonium, reinforcing the belief that a design event approach for wet weather flow water quality modelling is impractical. Modelling intermittent discharges on a catchment scale basis through utilisation of a simple water quality model as opposed to sophisticated commercial tools achieved an acceptable level of success. The same order of high flow load magnitudes as field observations was found. Modelling physical habitat availability using a catchment scale methodology, which eliminates the need for intensive field data collection was also demonstrated, suitable for use particularly when water quality and flow regimes are the overriding factors in urban river health. Here, habitat suitability observations from high-resolution simulations over short distances were found to replicate lower resolution simulations over longer distances where cross-sectional shape and channel slope of study reaches are similar. However, with the knowledge of inter-relationships between the flow, water quality and physical habitat remains limited, the development of an integrated management between these different fields is still immature.

Abstract:
In a first part, we focus on gradient dynamical systems governed by non-smooth but also non-convex functions, satisfying the so-called Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz inequality. After obtaining preliminary results for a continuous steepest descent dynamic, we study a general descent algorithm. We prove, under a compactness assumption, that any sequence generated by this general scheme converges to a critical point of the function. We also obtain new convergence rates both for the values and the iterates. The analysis covers alternating versions of the forward-backward method, with variable metric and relative errors. As an example, a non-smooth and non-convex version of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is detailed.Applications to non-convex feasibility problems, and to sparse inverse problems are discussed. In a second part, the thesis explores descent dynamics associated to constrained vector optimization problems. For this, we adapt the classic steepest descent dynamic to functions with values in a vector space ordered by a solid closed convex cone. It can be seen as the continuous analogue of various descent algorithms developed in the last years. We have a particular interest for multi-objective decision problems, for which the dynamic make decrease all the objective functions along time.We prove the existence of trajectories for this continuous dynamic, and show their convergence to weak efficient points. Then, we explore an inertial dynamic for multi-objective problems, with the aim to provide fast methods converging to Pareto points

Abstract:
This research addresses the mechanistic behaviour of urban catchments, particularly under the effects of rainfall, using the case study of the River Tame in West Midlands. The catchment response in wet weather is dominated by combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges into the river, causing water quality deterioration. Severe dissolved oxygen depletions often occur resulting in exceedence of fundamental intermittent standards; high ammonia values are also induced but un-ionised ammonia is constrained by the prevailing neutral pH. The five most dominant responses of ammonia to rainfall are identified based on antecedent dry period, the magnitude and timing of ammonia peaks, the initial rainfall intensity gradient and the patterns of rainfall intensity. Field studies support data analysis of the historic database and establish a temporal picture of BOD during storms. Simulation of river flow and water quality in low flow and storm conditions is achieved by employing MIKE 11, a deterministic mathematical model, with variable fidelity due to temporal and spatial variability of inputs. The model is tested as part of a decision support system for river water quality management. Simulations of various management schemes indicate that real time CSO control and on-line storage cannot guarantee water quality improvements and that on-line storage can be useful in combating excessively high pollutant concentrations.

One of my previous works introduced a new data mining technique to analyze multiple experiments called TAME: Trained Across Multiple Experiments. TAME detects treatment effects of a randomized controlled experiment by utilizing data from outside of the experiment of interest. TAME with linear regression showed promising result; in all simulated scenarios, TAME was at least as good as a standard method, ANOVA, and was significantly better than ANOVA in certain scenarios. In this work, I further investigated and improved TAME by altering how TAME assembles data and creates subject models. I found that mean-centering “prior data and treating each experiment as equally important allow TAME to detect treatment effects better. In addition, we did not find Random Forest to be compatible with TAME.

Abstract:
The study used continuously monitored, high resolution turbidity, ammonia, rainfall and flow data from EA UK. Urban storm events were not systematically characterised previously leading to gaps in process understanding; previous studies used short time periods and with most of them formed on single gauges. Aimed at improving understanding with novel contributions, the objectives were characterising the events, finding their seasonal influence and the spatial scale effect on turbidity patterns. Universally adaptable quantified events characterisation and classification were developed yielding single, double and multiple events. Double and multiple events together was more than single events for both smaller and larger catchments. Thus, analysing only single events could miss key dynamics of multiple events which showed significant increases in turbidity. More anticlockwise events than clockwise were found. Anticlockwise events decreased and clockwise increased from single to multiple events. Events with more number of turbidity than discharge peaks were found. Seasonally, most attributes as well as high urban extent and effluent spillage showed significant effects on turbidity mostly in summer and autumn. All seasons but spring with more anticlockwise than clockwise events had more low flows. Winter had the highest anticlockwise events, possibly because of its wider areal rain event extent, high number of low flows as well as more distal runoff sources. In the spatial scale studies, more single events in the smaller and more multiple events in the larger catchments as well as more anticlockwise events in the smaller and more clockwise events in the larger catchment were found.

Abstract:
A field-based research study has been undertaken on the River Tame within the industrial city of Birmingham, UK, to understand better the influence of urban groundwater discharge on surface-water quality. The 8 km study reach receives ~6% of its total baseflow (60% of which is groundwater) from the underlying Triassic Sandstone aquifer and flood-plain sediments. An integrated set of surface water and groundwater flow, head and physical/chemical data was collected from installed riverbed piezometers and existing monitoring across the aquifer. Field data and supporting computer modelling indicated the convergence of groundwater flows from the sandstone/drift deposits and variable discharge to the river (0.06 to 10.7 m\(^3\)d\(^{-1}\)m\(^{-1}\), mean 3.6 m\(^3\)d\(^{-1}\)m\(^{-1}\)), much of which occurred through the riverbanks. Significant heterogeneity was also observed in groundwater quality along and across the river channel. Key contaminants detected were copper, nickel, sulphate, nitrate, chlorinated solvents, e.g. trichloroethene, and their biodegradation products. Groundwater contaminant concentrations were generally lower than expected and ascribed to dilution and natural attenuation within the aquifer and riverbed. High concentration plumes were detected, but their effect was localised due to substantial dilution within the overlying water column of the river. Estimated contaminant fluxes were not found to reduce significantly the present surface water quality, which is poor (>30% is pipe-end discharge). Comparative studies elsewhere and further elucidation of heterogeneity and natural attenuation controls are recommended.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT KINETIC STUDIES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TERTIARY ETHERS USED AS GASOLINE ADDITIVES Boz, Nezahat Ph. D., Department of Chemical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Timur Dogu Co-supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gü
lSen Dogu June 2004, 174 pages In the present study, the kinetics studies for etherification reactions were investigated in detail. In the first phase of present study, different acidic resin catalysts were prepared by the heat treatment of Amberlyst-15 catalysts at 220°
C at different durations of time and also by the synthesis of sulfonated styrene divinylbenzene cross-linked resins at different conditions. A linear dependence of reaction rate on hydrogen ion-exchange capacity was in 2M2B+ethanol reaction. However, in the case of 2M1B+ethanol reaction hydrogen ion-exchange capacities over 2.8 meq.H+/g did not cause further increase in reaction rate, which was concluded to be majorly due to significance of diffusional resistances. DRIFTS experiments carried out with alcohols, isobutylene, isoamylenes and TAME (tert-amyl-methyl-ether) in a temperature range of 333-353 K supported a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type reaction mechanism involving adsorbed isoolefins molecules forming a bridged structure between &ndash
SO3H sites of the catalyst and adsorbed alcohol molecules. A rate expression derived basing on the mechanism proposed from the DRIFTS results gave good agreement with the published data. Reaction rate was found to give a sharp maximum at ethanol activity of around 0.1. The third phase of this work included evaluation of effective diffusivities and adsorption equilibrium constants of methanol, ethanol and 2M2B, in Amberlyst-15 from moment analysis of batch adsorber dynamic results. Models proposed for monodisperse and bidisperse pore structures were used for the evaluation of effective diffusivities. It was shown that surface diffusion contribution was quite significant. In the last phase of the work, a batch Reflux-Recycle-Reactor (RRR) was proposed, modeled and constructed to achieve high yields and selectivities in equilibrium limited reactions. The batch reflux recycle reactor was modeled by assuming plug flow in the reactor section, perfect mixing in the reboiler and vapor-liquid equilibria between the liquid in the reboiler and reactor inlet stream. In this system conversion values of isoamylenes reaching to 0.91 were achieved at 82°
C with almost 100% selectivity. Such conversion values were shown to be much higher than the corresponding equilibrium values that could be obtained in vapor phase fixed bed reactors. The activation energies evaluated in this system were found to be much less than the activation energies evaluated in the fixed bed reactor studies. This was concluded to be majorly due to the significance of transport resistant in the batch Reflux-Recycle-Reactor in which catalyst particles are partially wet. As a result of catalyst development, characterization, kinetic and reactor development studies carried out in this study, it was concluded that tert-amyl-ethyl-ether (TAEE) could be effectively produced and used as a gasoline blending oxygenate.

Anderson, Amanda L. "Scripts that Tame Us| "Beauty and the Beast" as Vehicle of Cultural Construction and Deconstruction." Thesis, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3615284.

Abstract:

From Madame Le Prince de Beaumont to Francesca Lia Block, Walter Crane to Mercer Mayer, and Jacques Cocteau to the Walt Disney Company, authors, artists, and filmmakers are drawn to recreating "Beauty and the Beast." As a result "Beauty and the Beast" is reformatted to reflect shifts in cultural assumptions, particularly ideas of gender roles, sexuality, and identifying the Other. Therefore, by examining the recurring motifs of the feminine ideal, the Beast as Other, and the transposition of the tale to an Orientalized setting, within adaptations of "Beauty and the Beast," it becomes clear that the tale is a multi-voiced tool with which authors and illustrators use to simultaneously support and subvert the hegemonic status quo. Examining the significance of "Beauty and the Beast" offers insight as to the power that revised texts have over their precursor texts and their producing culture. By understanding the importance of "Beauty and the Beast" as a symbiotic text, one can understand how it functions within its cultural context. Such an examination reveals that not only does culture dictate the tales we tell, but also that the tales we tell dictate our cultural identity. Ultimately this project concludes that this tale works within Western culture to convey shifting cultural messages about Otherness, women, and Islam.

The demand for interactive software with a high degree of usability has been increasing. The importance of such kind of software is highly noted, it is important for the user and for the company that produces it. To obtain an adequate degree of usability, its is necessary to make a design centered on the user, considering its interface of interaction since the firsts phases of its development process. The traditional software development methodologies consider the user interface as an appendix of the system, due to this, the field of human computer interface has done researches to develop its own methodologies. Towards this approach, nowadays some methodologies based in the task analysis and modeling to incorporate the user knowledge about its task within the design of the interface worth distinction. Nevertheless this technique has a lack of computational support. This work has the goal of design and construct a functional component to be used in the construction of a computational tool, iTAOS tool, to give support to task analysis and modeling. This functional component is the TAME module, that implements the functional requirements raised to iTAOS tool.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine the Swedish SMEs outsourcing behavior and the Chinese outsourcing vendors’ service offering to compose a comparable checklist. The comparable checklist is used to match the needs from the Swedish side with the offerings from the Chinese side. Due to the recent increase of adopting the concept of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), a focus towards this concept was chosen. With this, a comparable checklist was composed that can be used by Swedish SMEs to secure their offshore investment in China. The research was conducted through a mixed method methodology, with a self-administered questionnaire conducted towards Swedish enterprises and semi-structured interviews with Chinese outsourcing vendors. The Swedish enterprises were mainly small enterprises, involved in the service industry. The Chinese outsourcing vendors were mainly involved with BPO and related IT-solutions. The gathered empirical data was analyzed using a comparative design, this to validate the theoretical findings. The research resulted in findings about the Swedish SMEs outsourcing behavior; to what extent they are interested in outsourcing a business process and what their perspective is on the BPO concept. It also resulted in receiving the Chinese outsourcing vendors’ perspective on how they target the Western market in order to achieve a successful outsourcing relationship which in turn resulted in the final composed comparable checklist.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the temporal, aspectual, modal and evidential (TAME) values of clause-final enclitic particles in the Mandarin dialect spoken in Baoding (Hebei, China). These unstressed particles perform various semantic and pragmatic functions, but some of them also encode tense, aspect mood and evidentiality (TAME) as well as illocutionary force. The first part of the thesis includes a presentation of the Baoding dialect and a state of the art on the notions of tense, aspect, modality and evidentiality. It gives an overview of the final particles of the Baoding dialect and the various paradigms which structure them. The second part describes the TAME system encoded by these particles, by recording the functions of eight of them, which express: associated motion (=tɕhi and =lɛ); imperfective aspect (=ni and =lɛ.tʂo); change of state (=lɛ), imminent action (the apprehensive particle = lɛ.ia and the egophoric particle =ia); and prioritive (particle =tʂo). This study, which is based on original field data, constitutes the first overall description of the TAME system encoded by final enclitic particles in a non-standard Mandarin dialect, and contributes to our knowledge of linguistic variation within Sinitic languages

Full text
Abstract:
This article critically examines the hypothesis of Brennan and Buchanan that competition among governments in the provision of public goods can serve as a substitute for constitutional constraints on governments. Since Leviathan-type governments with free choice of tax instruments will be able to escape competitive pressure by shifting taxes to immobile factors, one could think of a rule of competition which prohibits taxes on immobile factors. Indeed, such a rule leads to a Nash-equilibrium where the tax burden lies on the mobile factor. However, net income of the citizens may or may not increase as a result from such a rule, depending on a number of variables presented in this article. A complete substitution of constitutional constraints by the rule of competition may, depending on the same variables, even decrease net income. Moreover, some potential for increases in net income may be forgone, since capital allocation and the supply of public goods will usually be inefficient in equilibrium. Finally, applying the rule in a real-world environment will be difficult and may even lead to further serious inefficiencies. For these reasons, such a rule will hardly ever be introduced. Hence, competition among governments cannot be viewed as a proper substitute for constitutional constraints. Whoever is afraid of Leviathan should thus not rely on competition among governments (alone).

Many academic libraries around the world are allocating large portions of their budget to the provision of electronic books (e-books). While circulation statistics provided by the e-book vendors indicate that the e-books are being used, they do not inform the libraries of the reasons behind use, how they are being perceived and user satisfaction. In recent years, academics and researchers have been investigating e-book usage and user satisfaction at their respective institutions. This dissertation looks at e-book usage in academic libraries through a systematic review of the literature on research about e-books. Journal articles with subject matter concerning ebook usage in academic libraries in the United States and the United Kingdom were collected. Due to technological advances, only articles which had been published from 2004 to 2014 were collected. Other limitations of the study included language, solely using the literature to conduct research and the internet as a research tool.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Taming of the Shrew is an early comedy that exposes the oddities we take for granted: curious conventions, wild assumptions, gender roles, relationships, social status, fashion, and everything else we know so defectively. The given circumstances of the script and Petruchio are specific in choice, yet broad in interpretation. Petruchio, the catalyst behind Katherine’s character arc, needed to not only be believable in his ways, but likeable by the audience. This thesis examines the process required to successfully develop and bring to life the character of Petruchio to our modern audience. It includes historical background information on William Shakespeare and the origins of the play itself, Sanford Meisner’s Techniques (moment-to-moment analysis & actioning) and Konstantin Stanislavski’s system are included with the scored actor’s script, journals recorded by the actor to verify his victories and defeats during the six-week production process and critiques to support the success of the production.

Abstract:
This thesis extends a localisation theory for finite algebras to certain classes of infinite structures. Based on ideas and constructions originally stemming from Tame Congruence Theory, algebras are studied via local restrictions of their relational counterpart (Relational Structure Theory). In this respect, first those subsets are identified that are suitable for such a localisation process, i. e. that are compatible with the relational clone structure of the counterpart of an algebra. It is then studied which properties of the global algebra can be transferred to its localisations, called neighbourhoods. Thereafter, it is discussed how this process can be reversed, leading to the concept of covers. These are collections of neighbourhoods that allow information retrieval about the global structure from knowledge about the local restrictions. Subsequently, covers are characterised in terms of a decomposition equation, and connections to categorical equivalences of algebras are explored. In the second half of the thesis, a refinement concept for covers is introduced in order to find optimal, non-refinable covers, eventually leading to practical algorithms for their determination. Finally, the text establishes further theoretical foundations, e. g. several irreducibility notions, in order to ensure existence of non-refinable covers via an intrinsic characterisation, and to prove under some conditions that they are uniquely determined in a canonical sense. At last, the applicability of the developed techniques is demonstrated using two clear expository examples

This dissertation consists of an ethnography on the relationship between humans and animals in Rio Grande do Sul pampa having as reference the established interaction between the trainers and the horses in the taming. This relationship builds the technique itself, the pastoral labors, and the way of life. The trainer is the artifice who has the ability of techniques of teaching horses to activities related to jobs involving extensive livestock farming. It is a knowledge / make consists of different moments in which trigger the use of certain artifacts, establishing an interaction where the horse learns ways to communicate with the human. These sets of techniques are classifieds according to the degree of violence undertaken to tame the horse, although, according to the interlocutors, each handler has its technical choices that are useds according to the established relationship with the horse. For trainers, the "horse is equal to man, has temper", where some are tame, others are "velhacos", i.e., rebels and others are "baldosos", characterized as treacherous animals. In addition, the taming process are taken into account the varying degrees of assimilation of the teachings of each horse and learning is an ongoing process that needs to be always practicing the animal for this " not lose doma " , that is, forget We have learned. Consequently, in the process is established an interaction between human and nonhuman where the trainer teaches the horse, and this, in turn, teaches the skill of execution of techniques, making him experience different ways of practicing such knowledge / make. Therefore, the ethnographic work establishes a discussion about learning both as trainers of horses is through a continuing incorporation of skills constituted on experience and experiences of inhabiting the world of pastoral read and of life.

Abstract:
Today’s prison system in England and Wales has been developed as one solution to the issue of how society should deal with offenders, and part of this approach is to provide an education service that contributes towards the rehabilitation of offenders by helping them to gain qualifications that can lead to employment. For almost two hundred years the role of prison education has been based on the perceived purposes of prisons, which have dictated how offenders have been treated and what role prison education has to play in this treatment. At present three sets of policies, further education, prison education and penal policy, are used by government to determine the role of prison education and deal with the issues it presents. This thesis uses the concept of ‘wicked’ problems to investigate what two key stakeholder groups, prison educators and their managers, believe are the key issues in prison education and the impact of the policy approaches that are used to deal with them. The concepts of wicked and tame problems are derived from Rittel and Webber’s analysis of the rational planning approaches that were being applied in the 1960s to complex social policy issues such as housing and health. From this Rittel and Webber proposed that there were ten criteria that could be used to characterise an issue as ‘wicked’. These ten criteria underpin the questions used to answer the main research question for the thesis: 'What are the perceptions of two key stakeholder groups on the impact of tame and wicked approaches to prison education?' The research was founded in an interpretivist-constructivist philosophy and adopted a qualitative approach in the form of in-depth interviews with 12 participants, consisting of three managers and nine educators, all based in one prison setting in the north of England. From the analysis of the interviews it was concluded that both the educators and the managers acknowledged the complexities of the system within which they worked and some of the issues that arose from this situation. They also believed that policy makers and the prison system adopted tame approaches to deal with these issues and, whether consciously or unconsciously, replicated some of these in their own approach prison education. There were some areas of agreement between the views of the educators and their managers on the key issues in prison education, how they may be addressed and if they could be solved. However, there was not a sufficient level of consensus to be able to formulate an agreement on which issues were the most pressing, or to devise an approach to deal with them, a situation which in itself confirmed that prison education was a wicked problem. This thesis therefore suggests that the first step in attempting to address the problem of prison education is for stakeholders to better appreciate its wicked nature, for only then can further steps be taken towards building a shared understanding of the issues through the involvement of all stakeholders. It has to be accepted by all stakeholders, including government and policy makers, that there may be ways of improving the situation by addressing some of the issues, but there is no 'right' answer to the wicked problem of prison education that will solve all of the issues 'once-and-for-all'.

Abstract:
Chapter five contains my conclusions of the connections I find. In addition, I use examples from Witi Ihimaera's fictional novel The Uncles Story, as well as many other of his plays and novels, to show examples of influences from Maori culture, Mormonism, and his homosexuality on Ihimaera's work.; Recent artists like Norwegian Recycling and E-603 have created a new genre of art within music: digital recycling. These artists take many different well-known and less-known lyrics, music, and spoken word and combine them together. This meshing of multiple pieces of art has new historical roots. The different images, auditory and visual, that these creations produce and often enhance meaning and connections through popular media. These connections interest me most. Through the lenses of post-colonial, gender, and queer theories, I examine Witi Ihimaera's creative work. I splice in different theorists' words, my own thoughts, and images to enhance and accent Ihimaera's "Singing Word" (Juniper Ellis 170). According to Ihimaera, the written word and the "novel is alien to the indigenous form, and that where Maori are going now is probably where it's most natural, and that is into theatre or into poetry...and oral storytelling" (Ihimaera 170). As the first published playwright in New Zealand and as an English professor at the University of Auckland, Witi Ihimaera is a role model and leader to many other Maori and New Zealand playwrights and writers. I am most interested in understanding what and how he has been influenced as an artist. I craft a document that extends the idea of a written word in a Maori context, in which I explore the major influences on Ihimaera as a theatrical creator and influencer of other Maori artists. Chapter one introduces Witi Ihimaera and my methods. Chapter two includes my research on the Maori culture with the following subsections: the people, their traditions, and their paternal systems of power. Chapter three is my research on the influx of Pakeha authority highlighting the Mormon take over and how that affected author and playwright Witi Ihimaera. Chapter four is my research on how Ihimaera's homosexuality has influenced his creations and the contemporary Maori Performance.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the propagation of 2-birationality for 2-extensions of numbers fields. More precisely, le t K be a 2-rational totally real number field, L a CM quadratic extension of K, and let K be a totally real 2-extension of K. Under which conditions can one read the 2-birationaltiy of the compositum L = LK from L ? This work is divided into three parts : we first study the absolute quadratic case, then the relatively quadratic case, then finally the general case. The thesis’s main result solves the whole problem. We also illustrate the result with various numeric examples, obtained with PARI and a focus at the end on 2-birational extensions’ towers

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is divided into three independent chapters on the iterates of rational maps on projective varieties and more specifically on the study of the growth of the degree sequences of the iterates of such maps. In the first chapter, we give a construction of the fundamental invariants called dynamical degrees. Our method holds in a very general setting, without any conditions on the characteristic of the field or on the singularities of the ambient space. This construction is based on the study of positivity properties of algebraic cycles and gives an alternative approach to the analytical technics of Dinh and Sibony or to the algebraic arguments of Truong. The second chapter is taken from an article written in joint work with Jian Xiao. Our paper focuses on central objects in convex geometry called valuations. We transfer some positivity notions of algebraic cycles recently introduced by Lehmann and Xiao, this allows us to extend the convolution operation defined by Bernig and Fu to a subspace of sufficiently positive valuations. The third chapter is the core of this thesis and focuses on the dynamical degrees of the so-called tame automorphisms of an affine quadric threefold. Our arguments are of various nature and rely on the action of the tame group on a CAT(0), Gromov hyperbolic square complex recently introduced by Bisi, Furter and Lamy. Finally, we have collected in the last chapter a few perpectives directly inspired by this work

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose is to develop a greater understanding of what is requested by customers with regards to e-commerce and mobile payments and how managers attitude can affect the technological adaption process. Furthermore, a suggested framework will be presented on how SMEs can adapt to these changes. Problem – The move towards the cashless society has changed the business environment and increased the demand for mobile payments and e-commerce. The transition to implement new technologies requires resources in terms of time, money and knowledge. Therefore, this process can be challenging for SMEs. Design-Methodology-Approach – Primary data is collected through case studies and secondary data from previous research conducted. Two SMEs within the retail business in Jönköping is investigated using semi-structured interviews. The combined data is analyzed together with previous literature within the field. Findings – The findings show that customers’ demand of e-commerce and mobile payments has increased. A positive correlation between managers’ attitude towards new technology and the implementation process is found. To adapt to these technological changes, it is important for SME managers to invest equally in knowledge and technology.

Abstract:
Using postmodern, feminist and queer notions of utopia/dystopia and narrative theory, this thesis contains an analysis of The Handmaid’s Tale (novel 1985; film 1990; TV series S01 2017) based on theoretical and methodological understandings of utopia/dystopia and narrative as deeply connected with notions of temporality and relationality, and of violence and resistance as the modes of expression of utopia and dystopia in the source texts. The analysis is carried out in an explorative manner (Czarniawska 2004) and utilises the notion of “disidentification” (Butler 1993; Muñoz 1999) and the concepts of “diffraction” (Haraway 1992, 1997; Barad 2007, 2010), and “entanglement” (Barad 2007). The conclusion becomes that utopia and dystopia in The Handmaid’s Tale are, to a great extent, imagined within the same system of understanding, but that utopian hope can be found in the relationality and temporality of resistance, and that the radically different utopian place is the queer horizon.
