Abstract:
The ancient Tamils were the ones who closely observed the astronomical events and changes occurring in the sky every day and told the world the thoughts related to astronomy. Names like Kanyan Poongunranar, Kanimethaviyar, Pakkudukkai Nakkaniyar etc. are proof that there were many people who excelled in the field of astronomy in Tamil Nadu. Astronomer Sylator has said that Tamil's system of celestial arithmetic is the most moderate of all the mathematics involved. The history of the past reveals that the Tamil race has been deeply entrenched in scientific spirit and thought since ancient times. Based on scientific news, Tamil has the honour of creating literature two thousand years ago. The Tamilian who moved the wheel of life grounded on a scientific basis that day has recorded his scientific thoughts in Tamil. Even before the vernacular connection and its consequent mythological dependence were visible in Tamil, the idea of cosmic elements like the world, planets, constellations, etc., was prevalent in Classical Tamil literature. General science encompasses various disciplines like physics, chemistry, medicine, botany, zoology, astronomy, etc. Among these is the branch called astronomy, which helps to understand the various elements of space. Since astronomy is a growing discipline and has a guiding platform for many future studies, the messages related to astronomy seen in Sangam poems are examined in this article.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to show the most significant phonetic and morphological features belonging both to the deep Tamian (tāmnieku) subdialects of the Livonic dialect and the Curonian (kursiskās) subdialects of the Middle dialect. The main focus is on the forms used in the deep Tamian subdialects of Pope, Ziras, Piltene, Zlēkas, Ance, Dundaga, and Ugāle, based on the materials acquired by the author during the period 2008–2019, and compared with the data of dialect archive of the Latvian Language Institute of the University of Latvia (collected in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century). In phonetics, a typical feature is the use of broad e, ē, especially in infinitives, e. g., celt ‘to raise, to build’, sēt ‘to sow’, meklēt (Curonian subd.), meklet (Tamian subd.) ‘to search’, the lengthening or diphthongization of short vowels a, e, i, u before consonant r, e. g., dârps ‘work’, ʒērt ‘to drink’, zîrks // ziêrks ‘horse’, bũrt // buõrt ‘to conjure’, palatal consonant ŗ, e. g., kaŗš ‘war’, gaŗš ‘long’, jũŗ ‘sea’, also the use of vowel u before the consonant v or b, e. g., zuve (Curonian subd.), zȗu // zȗi (Tamian subd.) ‘fish’, suvēnc (Curonian subd.), suvēnc // suvans (Tamian subd.) ‘pig’, dubans // dubenc ‘bottom, seat’, dui // dȗv (Tamian subd.) ‘two’, the loss of sounds in different positions, e. g., cilēks (Curonian subd.), cileks (Tamian subd.) ‘human’, ciris (Curonian subd.), cȋrs (Tamian subd.) ‘axe’, dures // duõres (Curonian subd.), dȗrs // dûrs // duôrs (Tamian subd.) ‘the doors’, tēs ‘father’, vẽš ‘wind’, rupš ‘rude’, and assimilation of -ln- to -ll-, e. g., mells ‘black’, vells ‘the devil’, villa (Curonian subd.), vill (Tamian subd.) ‘wool’, pills ‘full’. In morphology, a characteristic feature is the use of ē-stem substantives, e. g., klẽte (Curonian subd.), klẽt (Tamian subd.) ‘barn’, pirte // piêrte (Curonian subd.), pirt // piêrt (Tamian subd.) ‘bathhouse’, sirde // siêrde (Curonian subd.), sȋrd (Tamian subd.) ‘heart’, also the use of archaic plural dative endings -iems or -ems, e. g., zirgiêms // zîrgiêms (Curonian subd.), zirgems // zîrgems (Tamian subd.) ‘for horses’, -ams: mãsams ‘for sisters’, -ems or -ems, e. g., guõvems (Curonian subd.), guõvems (Tamian subd.) ‘for cows’, and the use of prefix / preposition az or āz, e. g., âzvakãr // azvakar (Curonian subd.), azvakar // aizvakar // aîzvakar (Tamian subd.) ‘the day before yesterday’, âz // az kalna (Curonian subd.), az // aiz // aîz kal:n (Tamian subd.) ‘behind the hill’, also prefix or preposition ūz, e. g., ũzlikt (Curonian subd.), ûzlikt (Tamian subd.) ‘to put on’, ûz galda (Curonian subd.), ûz gal:d (Tamian subd.) ‘on the table’, also a typical peculiarity of the Curonian and Tamian subdialects (but not heard nowadays) is the use of pronouns tau, sau ‘for yourself, for myself’.

Abstract:
The Tamil language, which is a highly classical language, has a rich literary heritage and grammatical limits. Among the books that define the grammatical limits of the Tamil language, the Tolkappiyam is the foremost. Many people have studied this book, composed by Tolkappiyar with the threefold authority of writing, word and meaning, and have made its methods known to the public. Among them, the one who has studied Tolkappiyar extensively and established through his research book, Tolkappiyar Kanda Tamilar society, that the Tamil society is prior to all social systems; unique, is the Coimbatore scholar A. Krishnaswamy Naidu. In this way, this article was written to highlight the methods of the research book, Tolkappiyar Kanda Tamilar society.

Antony, Richard. "British-born Tamils : a study of young Tamil Londoners." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.560501.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study concentrates on the lifestyles and experie~ces of British-born young Tamils, and explores various components of their identities. Not many sociological studies have been condu~ted on the Tamil community in Britain. The study approaches its subject area through combining detailed ethnographic and interview research on young British Tamils with a consideration of wider arguments relating to ethnicity, migration, diaspora and youth. The findings are organised in terms of the four key themes of traditional culture, friendship, media, and politics, each one combined with relevant conceptual and empirical theorisations. Diasporic theories help to understand broader trends relating to various aspects of identity and these contribute towards the development of theories on minority youth inter-culture and newethnicities. Specifically, the study focuses on British-born young Tamils based in London, aged between 16 - 29. The ethnography focuses on their cohesiveness as a group, their relationship with parents and traditional Tamil culture and with other elements of British society, including White British youth culture and ethnic minority youth cultures. This qualitative study deploys research techniques together with interviews and ethnographic observations to examine current understanding of cultural identities, ethnicity and community. The analysis highlights the complex and dynamic nature of the identities of the young respondents and their experiences of being British-Tamils. The notion of hybridisation starts to figure quite strongly with the development of intercultural forms of mixed identities relating to the maintenance of traditional culture, friendship patterns and media interests. Interestingly however, young Tamils' political engagement with recent political events has developed a greater awareness of their Tamil identity and politicised youth ethnicity than before. The implications may be observed in terms of a greater impact upon their future cultural orientations - an increase In Tamil media usage, more interest in their mother tongue and the development of connections with the transnational Tamil community. ii.

Abstract:
This study investigated language shift in the Tamil community, a minority group in Singapore, and the maintenance of their mother tongue, Tamil as well as notions of identity amongst young Tamils. Contrary to previous studies, this study takes a stance that there is a possibility for Tamil to be a living language in Singapore, and in light of the positive attitudes and growing support observed amongst young English-educated Tamils, the declining use in Tamil may be gradually averted.

Abstract:
During the course of history, the world have come to see powerful nations rise and fall, religions spread and diminish – and all too often there have been violent struggles between religious groups and secular forces, a fact that we still see in our world today. In the West, we often hear about the violent and fundamental dimensions of Islam. Buddhism is rarely a part of the equation in a western context, regarding violence. A common perception is the picture of Buddhism as a guardian of non-violent principles and values. The central theme of this essay circuits around views on violence and warfare in the Sri Lankan context, where religion and violence have come to be intertwined, often with political overtones. With different theoretical frameworks and angles I have illustrated and analyzed how the historical development can be linked to classical buddhist sources and how some singalease buddhists make use of a mythical glorious past to justify violence and warfare against the tamil minority population. But like all religious traditions there are also counterforces and exceptions that diverge from the mainstream, which I have found importnant to illuminate. Religious phenomena can be a complex matter to investigate and trying to see the variations within a religious tradition can be difficult but one way to adress theese issues (when it comes to religion and violence in Sri Lanka) is to give diverse and multifaceted pictures of the conflict for when it comes to religion, there are never one-sided answers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis study explores the legacies of the protracted 1983–2009 Sri Lankan civil conflict using original household survey data. By differentiating individual- and household-level war exposure, voluntary and involuntary military service experience, and loss of family members of soldiers and civilians, we evaluated the influence of a wide array of war-time experiences on the trust level of people in war-torn regions. We found that civil conflict undermined political trust, and heightened inter as well as intra-ethnic divisions among the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka. Thus, the Sri Lankan government needs to take action not only to restore political trust but also to promote reconciliation between the Sinhala and Tamil communities as well as within the Tamil community in war-torn regions.

Abstract:
In the field of Natural Language Processing, Question Answering is a cardinal task that has garnered a lot of attention. With the development of multiple language models, question answering systems have been developed and deployed to facilitate enhanced information retrieval. These systems, however, have been implemented to a large extent only in English. Our objective was to create such a question answering system for the Tamil Language. We decided to use XLM-RoBERTa as our language model, which has been trained on a variety of datasets. We have also employed a hand-annotated dataset for the purpose of validation. We trained the model on two types of datasets, the first one being only in Tamil, whereas the other one being a mixture of Indian languages along with Tamil. The results were satisfactory in both cases. Given the huge amount of computational power the model required for training, we utilized the Colab Pro Plus cloud GPU from Google to satisfy our demands. We will also be publishing our dataset on huggingface so that fellow researchers can use it for further analysis.

Abstract:
This study focuses on disaster impacts and recovery in Tamil Nadu, drawing on insights from Chennai city and Nagapattinam district. The research is part of a larger three-year project called “Recovery with Dignity”, which examines the experiences of recovery in post-disaster situations across three states in India – Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala – and explores how recovery processes represent vulnerable populations. In this report, we focus on three key disasters in Tamil Nadu: the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the 2015 South India flood, and the 2018 Cyclone Gaja. Through these events, we examine how the ways disasters and their losses are represented shape recovery outcomes. The study uses a range of data, from a review of state policies in Tamil Nadu (2005-2019), an analysis of media articles published in English and Tamil (2004-2019), to interviews with disaster-affected people and secondary stakeholders. The findings indicate that disaster responses and outcomes are highly differentiated based on how disaster-affected people and their needs and losses are represented. To enable inclusive recovery, it is necessary to recognising the heterogenous nature of disaster impacts and acknowledge different ideas of what recovery means.

Full text
Abstract:
The Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) has prioritised the full sanitation chain, including the strengthening of septage management as an economical and sustainable complement to networkbased sewerage systems. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is supporting the GoTN to achieve the Sanitation Mission of Tamil Nadu through the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP). TNUSSP Phase I (2015-2018) was designed to support GoTN and selected cities in making improvements along the entire urban sanitation chain. In the second phase (2018– 2020), TNUSSP seeks to go one step further and integrate a gender and social inclusion (GSI) perspective within its interventions at two sites – the city of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), and the two town panchayats (TPs) of Periyanaicken-Palayam (PNP) and Narasimhanaicken-Palayam (NNP) in Coimbatore district – along the urban sanitation cycle and in its support provided at the State level.

Integrating gender into Government Health programmes in Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Case study summary report: Meeting the healthcare needs of the transgender community – The gender guidance clinics of Tamil Nadu (India). United Nations University - International Institute for Global Health, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.37941/rr/2023/7.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study focuses on gender guidance clinics (GGCs) in Tamil Nadu, India, which provide services to the trans community within public hospitals. The programme was selected as a promising practice because it addresses the health needs of the LGBTQ+ community in India, a group that is largely marginalised and stigmatised. This programme stood out because of its significant government ownership and unique approach in addressing the healthcare needs of gender and sexual minorities. Furthermore, the initiative successfully withstood the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and has demonstrated the potential for expanding to other regions within Tamil Nadu, as well as to other states in India and beyond. Based on in-depth analyses of interviews and published materials, it documents and analyses the contextual factors that gave rise to GGCs in Tamil Nadu, the enabling factors and challenges encountered, and some of the outcomes achieved and lessons learned, including those that might be transferable to other contexts.

Abstract:
Labour abuse in the garment industry has been widely reported. This qualitative research explores the lived experiences in communities with bonded labour in Tamil Nadu, India. We conducted a qualitative expert-led analysis of 301 life stories of mostly women and girls. We also explore the differences and similarities between qualitative expert-led and participatory narrative analyses of life stories of people living near to and working in the spinning mills. Our findings show that the young female workforce, many of whom entered the workforce as children, are seen and treated as belonging – body, mind and soul – to others. Their stories confirm the need for a feminist approach to gender, race, caste and work that recognises the complexity of power. Oppression and domination have material, psychological and emotional forms that go far beyond the mill. Almost all the girls reported physical and psychological exhaustion from gendered unpaid domestic work, underpaid hazardous labour, little sleep, poor nutrition and being in unhealthy environments.

Full text
Abstract:
Afterwards is an anthology of graphic narratives of disaster impacts and the process of recovery that follows. These stories were drawn from the testimonies of disaster-affected individuals, households, and communities documented from the Indian states of Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The book has been translated into the regional languages of these states – Odia, Tamil, and Malayalam. They communicate challenges related to housing resettlement, loss of livelihoods, and gender-based exclusion among others. At the heart of this anthology lies the idea of ‘representation’: how are disaster-affected people portrayed by the media, state actors, and official documents; how are their needs represented and how do these portrayals impact the lives of those at risk and shape their recovery?
