Full textObjective: The literature study had two aims. The first was to investigate how common it is that dental anxiety is a reason why adults do not go to the dentistry and the second if irregular dental attenders have a higher level of dental anxiety. Material and methods: A systematic literature search of the database PubMed was carried out. The inclusion criteria were that studies should have been conducted in individuals > 15 years old and articles should be written in English. The exclusion criterion was reviews. After reading the title and abstract of the found articles, articles that matched the inclusion and exclusion criteria were retrieved in full text. These were graded on relevance and articles of high relevance were included in the result tables and quality were then assessed. Articles with low relevance were excluded. Results: Twenty-five articles had high relevance and were used in the result tables. Of these, 10 articles were used for the first aim, 15 articles for the second aim. Of these, two articles were assessed as showing medium-high quality, 23 articles were of high quality. Conclusion: The results show that dental anxiety is one of the major reasons that adults do not go to the dentist. Other factors also influence like the lack of time, cost and that the patients do not feel the need to go as long as they do not have any problems with their teeth. The result also show that irregular dental attenders have a higher level of dental anxiety.

Full textAim: The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of hypnotherapy’s effects and experiences of hypnotherapy as a treatment of dental fear in dental clinics. Material and Methods: The material was obtained through interviews with six informants working with hypnotherapy as a treatment for dental fear in dental clinics in Sweden. The interviews were conducted using an interview guide and lasted 20 - 35 minutes. The method was qualitative and the interviews were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Results: In the results a main theme appeared: Preventive treatment. The results showed that the informants perceived hypnotherapy’s effects as good and they experienced hypnotherapy as effective in the treatment of dental fear. The informants agreed that hypnotherapy should be used in dental clinics and performed by a dentist or dental hygienist. Many of the informants felt that their colleagues had difficulties accepting hypnotherapy as a method. Conclusion: Perceptions and experiences of hypnotherapy as a treatment and its effect are generally positive with some exceptions regarding their colleagues attitudes towards the method. More research is needed to bring a wider acceptance and understanding of hypnotherapy as a treatment method.

Full textAim: To examine the factors which have causal relationship with dental fear among children and adolescents. Material and methods: This study is a literature review of published scientific articles that concerns the dental fear and its causes among children and adolescents. The searching and assessment of the relevant scientific articles have been made with the intention to find answers to the study's purpose. Quantitative studies were included in the study. Articles that were published before the 2000s were excluded. Results: Showed that child dental fear is associated with parental dental fear. Unpleasant experience at dental visits contribute to dental fear. Pain and irregular dental visits are associated with dental fear among children and adolescents. Conclusions: There are different causal relationship to dental fear among children and adolescents. Several studies noted that girls had a higher level of dental anxiety than boys. Most common factors which associates with dental fear among children and adolescents are distressing painful experience, previous experience of toothache, injection, drilling and the sound of drilling.

Full textBackground: Dental fear may originate from both incidents within or outside of the dentistry. The majority of the population experience some form of dental fear in varying degrees. It has been shown that dental fear has a negative impact of the oral health. Due to sexual abuse, people may suffer from several harmful consequences, which can be observed during a clinical examination. Aim: The aim of this review was to explore eventual relationship between dental fear and sexual abuse. Method: The method used was a literature review. An article search with keyword combinations was carried out in different databases. The selected articles went through several steps of selections and one quality assessment. Result: The studies showed a divided result, but most studies could demonstrate a statistically significant relationship between dental fear and sexual abuse. Several factors in dentistry may evoke flashbacks and contribute to a negative perception of dentistry. Victims of oral sexual abuse presented higher levels of dental fear. Conclusion: There is a confirmed relationship between dental fear and sexual abuse. Certain elements within the dentistry can have a negative impact on the dental care experience.
