Full textThe research concerns Choukri's autobiography "For Bread Alone" as a starting point for a problematic study of Moroccan Literature. The first part outlines an history of this literature, from the ancient period to our days, dealing with the questions of colonisation, national identity, decolonisation, and plurilinguism. The second part analyses the Tangier's production in which Choukri's voice is the must representative one. The thesis evokes the historic, economic and cultural specificity of the town, to such a pass that Tangier has become a destination of Western authors and painters. From the presentation of a national literature, then it proceeds to the study of a regional literature, formed by Choukri's, Driss ben Hamed Charhadi's, Mohammed Mrabet's, ahmed Yacoubi's and Abdeslam Boulaich's works. Tangier's literature shows in fact specific writing styles and topics like hunger, poverty, marginality. The third part treats "Choukri's case" : an Arabophone author, illiterate until twenty years, has gained success by "For Bread Alone" Arabic manuscript's translations by the American Paul Bowles and the Francophone Tahar Ben Jelloun, before the text is published in Arabic. The Arabic "original" is compared to the English and French versions and the relationship between the vehicular languages and the spreading of emerging literatures is analyzed, dealing particularly with the controversy between Paul Bowles, Tahar Ben Jelloun, and recently Choukri himself, the issue of the authorship and that of the link between orality and literacy

Full textThe subject of this study is melhūn, the Moroccan sung oral poetry. The main objective of this study is to determine the anthropological status of this practice, which entails the definition of the socio-economic status of its performers (poets, singers, musicians and amateurs), a temporal and spacial context analysis and also the examination of the discourse embodied in this practice, in the light of the dominant ideological discourse. Even though disseminating a subversive discourse, which undermines certain cultural norms and concepations in what concerns love, gender relationships and the status of the individual within its group, melhūn poetry which permeates the whole Moroccan urban society, regardless of social classes, rather than being stigmatised is valued. On the one hand, this can be explained by the fact that melhūn, due to its rhetorical characteristics, is an archetype of the word; on the other hand, poets do not base their breaking discourse on strange values but rather on their own values of the dominant discourse that is furthermore challenged by them

Full textThis work is interested in the study of the communicative character of the song which touches all the fields of the social life, and more particularly in the communicative role of the songs of marriage which were for us the occasion to determine the role of the woman in the Moroccan Jewish community. More precisely, we emphasized the inherent difficulties at the universe of the women. Through some of these songs, the bride expresses her anger and her refusal. Our work is registered following work of Mr. Professor I Ben Ami on the description of the Jewish marriage in Morocco. Thus, we endeavoured to highlight the role of the Jewish traditional song within the community. A part of these songs were recorded by Professor I Ben Ami in 1964; the latter constitute the principal support of our study. This work borders also the linguistic aspect, (communication, sociology, semiology) of the songs. Indeed, the Jewish popular song answers a system of signs emphasized by some musical instruments

Full textThis thesis concerns the preservation process of the “intangible cultural heritage”. The case study: The Jama‘ l-fna Square and its storytellers, analyses the safeguarding of “intangible cultural heritage”. It draws, on the one hand, on an anthropological study of the concept of “heritage” based on the examination of the Unesco’s conventions. On the second hand, it relies the analysis of the sociocultural role of orality highlighted through an ethnographic fieldwork conducted among the storytellers (hlaïqiyya) of Jama‘ l-fna Square (Marrakech, Morocco). The study also enlightens the singularities of the patrimonialisation process in Morocco. It shows how legacy management practices and the different business activities which have induced a marginalization of the storytellers which went with a noticeable change of the art of storytelling, nowadays threatened to disappear. Finally, our thesis reveals a discrepancy between the exotic imaginary of the national and international visitors—which makes the practice of tales in the center of this emblematic area—and the socioeconomic difficulties endured by the narrators who are especially exposed to poverty and health problems. Generally speaking, the thesis contributes to the study of the stakes of the preservation of the transmission of the oral culture and the sustainability, and helps to gain a better understanding of the repercussions of globalization in traditional towns opened to global tourism

The dissertation is an anthropological description of the relation between pilgrims and the saint and his sanctuary: an aspect of rural Islam in morocco, but also an approach of Islamic mysticism through the character of the holy man who is the mystic founder of one of the most prestigious soufi orders, "the tariqa chadiliya", instituted in Egypt by the one and only disciple of Moulay'Abd as-Salam ibn Machich, Abou-I-Hassan Chadili. The dissertation is also an analysis of the everyday life of the special social group constituted by the descendants of the saint around the sanctuary of their ancestor : a sacred economic system, gifts, offertories, sacrifices. . . Full textThis research approaches marriage ceremony among the Ait Soukhmanes by investigating how this practice and related oral literature evolve amid deep social and cultural modifications. The ceremony is presented in its global context and its constituents are analyzed and interpreted according to micro and macro contexts. The study focuses on the comparison of songs collected in their context of ritual performance in two different periods of time. The songs are analyzed with reference to the ethnolinguistic and hermeneutic approaches. The thematic analysis makes it possible to identify the link between act and spoken word in the performance as well as cross-cutting themes and beliefs. The literary approach has focused on the recurring stylistic processes of the songs. The relationship between the text and the overall context is established through the representations that these songs convey, such as the image of the ideal woman and the sense of honor. In the second part, the different factors influencing ritual practice and festive groups are highlighted. The conclusion is that beliefs and representations are more resistant than practices, these latter adapting to the way of life while undergoing external influences. The process of identity construction has been treated in the context of globalization where culture, especially artistic expressions, are a place of negotiation, resistance, affirmation and/or alienation. However, we see that the policies adopted to revitalize orality do not replace the primary orality which is preserved only when it is present in the community life. The open question remains how we can assure the conditions of the survival of oral literature
