Abstract:
Sporting events are a stimulant for the economy and for improving social benefits. This paper aims to estimate a sporting event’s economic and social impact through input–output tables and cost-benefit analysis methodologies. Tangible and non-tangible impacts, such as health benefits and the value of the host city’s tourism image are investigated. Using data collected from the MedSailing event in 2019, the results show a positive return from every euro invested in the sporting event both economically and socially. Additionally, the results related to the media impact of the sporting event are shown. A single figure of net returns to society enables policymakers to assess the social value of the investment itself and make decisions that improve the economic development of the territory.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment of benign positional vertigo have resulted in significant costs to the medical system. In the current medical-economic climate, there is an increased emphasis on cost control. Recent studies have shown that the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP) is effective; the next step is to show the impact of CRP in cost-effective management of benign positional vertigo. METHODS: Forty-six of 100 patients who underwent CRP for benign positional vertigo responded to a survey regarding the financial impact of their disease. They were asked to subjectively estimate the sum of all disease-related expenses. Objective substantiation of this number was estimated by tabulating physician data, laboratory data, and failed treatment costs. RESULTS: The subjective figure totaled $2684.74 per individual. Summation of the tangible objective figures yielded $2009.63 per patient, corroborating the subjective figure. CONCLUSIONS: Because CRP is a relatively simple procedure that can obviate many wasted expenses in most patients, we believe that it is very cost-effective and should be incorporated into routine practice.

Abstract Joan Jonas’s large survey exhibition at Tate Modern (2018) highlighted the contemporary relevance of this pioneer of performance art in her juxtapositions of analogue and virtual methods. Her process often relies on a ground or stage where physical remnants of her performances are tangible. Drawing from these insights and exploring figure-ground relations through a selection of works by various artists and filmmakers, this article aims to challenge Hito Steyerl’s polemic that we might not need a ground within contemporary virtual image worlds. The consideration of case studies will be informed by philosophical reflections as to the relevance and scope of the idea of ground within the post-digital era.

Abstract:
Taking László Nemes’ film Son of Saul (2015) as both an aesthetic intervention into the public remembering of the Holocaust and as a critical/creative essay on representations of the horrors of war and violence more generally, this paper considers its use of the image and idea of the dead child—the child victim—and its ability to move, to communicate, to galvanise action, to seemingly cut through the chaos of communication. A figure presented as tangible and mournable in a way that the many anonymous, barely-glimpsed and largely ignored dead of the film are not, we consider it in relation to previous representations of the child in Holocaust film, but also, importantly, in relation to contemporary photographic examples of the child victim-as-icon, whose images seemingly require no caption to communicate and which inspire deeply-felt responses across cultures, organising structures of public feeling. As Nemes’ film makes clear, the claim of the child victim on the witness is profound, immediate, and potentially transformative. We will consider how the image of the child operates as a fluid signifier of both hope and despair, shared desires and fears, a not-unproblematic image through which the obscene and the unthinkable are mediated and made visible.

Abstract:
This paper aimed to reveal the values of local wisdom in the vernacular architecture of Gorontalo. The research was conducted with a qualitative research method in which the data were grouped into physical and non-physical data. Physical data (tangible) is obtained by measuring, drawing, photo recording, and tracking documents, while the non-physical data (intangible) is gained through interviews with ta momayanga (the expert), basi lo bele (home builders), tauwa lo adati (traditional leader), community /religious figure, architects, academicians and through discussions. The data analysis is done by describing and interpreting the empirical evidence through the vernacular theories to figure out the vernacular concept of the stage house of Gorontalo. Furthermore, the theory of the relation of function, form and meaning is used to reveal the concept of local wisdom. The results show that the architecture of the stage houses contains vernacular factors loaded with the values of local wisdom that can be seen from the shape, layout, construction structure and ornamentation. The values of local wisdom was reinforced after the arrival of Islam in Gorontalo around 15-16 century.

This paper highlights specifically the inter-relationship amidst the Wali, ancient mosques and sacred tombs (makam) playing vital role in the process of Islamization in the Indonesian archipelago, and in Lombok in particular. The process of converting local religion to Islam involves Wali - a venerated religious figure coming from outside Lombok- and the tangible legacies that he left in the forms of keramat creating new tradition of ziarah. The early stage of conversion was strongly marked by contextualizing Islam into local cultural symbol and cosmology. Embedded in this stage is the development of venerated attributes attached to keWalian, in the forms of: karamah, ngalap berkah, and wasilah. These spiritual attributes are pinpointed to highlight a dis¬tinctive cultural variance of Sasak Muslims in Lombok.

Abstract:
Abstract: Metaphor is a concept in the field of architecture which is starting to be widely applied in architectural buildings today. Metaphor in architecture can be defined as a figure or expression of a form in the form of a building that can give an impression to people who observe and use it. The concept of metaphorical architecture is divided into three types, namely; 1) Intangible Metaphor, 2) Tangible Metaphor, 3) Combined Metaphor. The concept of metaphorical architecture has been widely applied to several high-rise buildings in the world, but the clarity of the characteristics and application of the concept of metaphorical architecture in high-rise buildings is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to study and understand the characteristics of metaphorical architectural concepts and their application to high-rise buildings. The qualitative descriptive method is used to analyze the case study object. Based on the analysis and discussion of case study objects, it can be concluded that the application of the metaphorical architectural concept in high-rise buildings can be applied to parts of the building, such as crowns of buildings, towers or building bodies, podiums, shape patterns of building masses, building facades and also building materials , which is adapted to the type of architectural metaphor that will be applied. Of the three case study objects examined, each has a different type of metaphor, namely; 1) Menara Wisma BNI 46, Jakarta; Tangible Metaphor, 2) Bank of China Tower; Combined Metaphor, 3) Beekman Tower, New York; Tangible Metaphor. Keywords: Architecture; Metaphor; High-rise Buildings.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HSCT) is not widely used for patients with b-thalassemia major (TM) so far because of transplant toxicities. Furthermore the tangible outcomes of contemporary HSCTs in Asia are unknown. Methods A newly founded consortium named the Viva-Asia BMT Group collected HSCT data retrospectively and investigated whether TM-HSCT outcomes had improved in recent years in Asia and whether an upper age limit can be determined for safe transplantation. Results From 1991 to 2012, 422 TM-HSCTs were performed among the 8 Asian centers; half (n=209) were before January 2009 (early cohort) and the other half (n=213) were performed thereafter (recent cohort). All major outcomes including overall survival (OS), TM-free survival (TFS), incidences of graft rejection (GR) and transplant-related mortality (TRM) improved significantly in the recent cohort (OS 93.4%, TFS 88.6%, GR 4.4% and TRM 6.6%) when compared with the earlier cohort (OS 84%, TFS 68.1%, GR 17.1% and TRM 16%). In the recent cohort, favorable OS, TFS, GR and TRM were observed with unrelated donors (n=168, 92.8%, 87.8%, 4.2% and 7.2%, respectively), with one-antigen mismatched parental donors (n=26,100%, 100%, 0% and 0%, respectively), and in patients younger than 10 years (n=173, 96%, 90.8%, 4.7% and 4.0%, respectively). TFS with unrelated cord blood (35.3%) was poor. Conclusion The excellent outcomes of contemporary TM-HSCT in general suggest that transplantation is a viable option for many Asian patients, particularly those younger than 10 years from areas with limited resources for chronic transfusion and iron chelation. Gueirard, Ninuwe. "Recherches sur la géométrie de l'espace visuel : le cas particulier de l'appréciation de la distance." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017AIXM0478.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the difficulties in estimating the geometrical distance of visual space. Submitted in the field of Philosophy of Perception, this thesis is first discussed from an epistemological standpoint: how does one know that this distance is unknown or unknowable despite being perceived and discussed. The various works of Berkeley serve as a point of depart and establish a speculative framework as Berkeley held that judgment of distance results entirely from experience despite the fact that this distance cannot be seen in a phenomenal way. This thesis examines an essential question supported by this central problem, this time from an ontological position: how is the type of distance to be determined: is it unconsciously visible?tangible? or both visible and tangible at the same time? Can it be categorized in a hyperbolic space, or spherical space, or a strictly Euclidean space, or hyperbolic and spherical at the same time as Euclidean? In support of the thesis and research, various texts and experiences have been examined and contrasted, including those of Berkeley and I. Rock as well as T. Reid and M. Wagner. The goal has been to explore the limits of argumentation and to show what is implicated by these different accounts and assignment of distance in one, versus another, determined space; additionally studying subjects including the experience of the alleys or the so-called the moon illusion, which appeared to be demonstrative examples. In each instance, geometry of visual space and physiological optics confront one another, but at the center of this same fundamental debate is the question of how to define the estimation of distance philosophically?

Abstract:
Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia de Informática
Using any kind of dolls as a tangible interface, has the potential to provide a friendly and easy to learn interface that allows children to control virtual characters in a more intuitive way. The research effort in this domain has been motivated by the shortcomings of conventional interfaces, typically mouse and keyboard, which in this context are neither compelling nor do promote immersion. This dissertation focuses on the design and evaluation of a system which can interpret the behaviors that children give to a doll in order to provide this behavioral information to the virtual characters. With this system, the user (children) gets the role of movie director, directing virtual characters through this natural form of interaction. This dissertation aims to evaluate the hypothesis that dolls behaviors recognition based on the context of a well-known story, may enhance the ability of children in the creation of an animated film (virtual characters animations). Unlike many approaches that use a direct mapping of the doll movements to the virtual character, it is intended to test the mapping based on the crosses between, user behavioral intention, and the context where the doll it is inserted (the role and the location of the character in the story). The results show that the concept of interaction proposed to empower the children with a way to create animated films is actually very intuitive and easy to use. However, due to the technology used, it was not possible to assess to what extent this concept really empowers children to easily and joyfully create animated films.

Allison, Henry E. Hume and the Molyneux Problem. Edited by Paul Russell. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199742844.013.001.

Abstract:
How would Hume have addressed William Molyneux’s question to Locke: would a man born blind but able to distinguish between a sphere and cube by touch, immediately on acquiring sight, distinguish these figures visually? As a central issue in eighteenth-century epistemology and psychology, one would expect Hume to have dealt with it in his Treatise and, like Locke and Berkeley, answered in the negative. After offering a possible reason for Hume’s neglect of this problem, the paper argues that Hume’s focus on the problem of a vacuum and a relational theory of space would have prompted a response more akin to Leibniz than Molyneux. The paper first analyzes Hume’s position, then discusses the central features of Hume’s account of extension. It argues that this account commits Hume to the thesis that both visual and tangible ideas of space are three-dimensional and, if developed, would lead to a positive answer to Molyneux’s question.

Abstract:
This book is the first complete English translation of Wu Yue Chunqiu, a chronicle of two neighboring states during China's Spring and Autumn period. This collection of political history, philosophy, and fictional accounts depicts the rise and fall of Wu and Yue and the rivalry between them, the inspiration for centuries of poetry, vernacular fiction, and drama. Wu Yue Chunqiu makes use of rich sources from the past, carefully adapting and developing them into complex stories. Historical figures are transformed into distinctive characters; simple records of events are fleshed out and made tangible. The result is a nuanced record that is both a compelling narrative and a valuable historical text. As one of the earliest examples of a regional history, Wu Yue Chunqiu is also an important source for the history of what is now Zhejiang and Jiangsu. This engaging translation and the extensive annotations make this significant historical and literary work accessible to an English-speaking audience for the first time.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Cicero’s adaptation of Aristotle in his rhetorical works. Cicero considered Aristotle a somewhat remote figure, and associated him with times of political withdrawal and intense study. Yet he also held Aristotle in high esteem as a classic, especially for his contributions to rhetoric: Cicero was taught by his instructor Philo of Larissa that Aristotle invented the debate on both sides of a general rhetorical or philosophical question that for Cicero represented the tangible union of philosophy and rhetoric necessary for the ideal orator. When Cicero faced the prospect of further political inactivity after Caesar’s assassination, he decided to fully embrace Aristotle’s didacticism by composing his Topica, a how-to manual for this sort of debate that would make his ideal orator (who, of course, resembled Cicero himself) into a classic model in Roman rhetorical instruction.

Abstract:
This contribution tries to reintroduce Stereotomy within the field of “research by design”: the discipline, in fact, can be used as a means of re-composition of the design, project and execution phases. Starting from the origin of this break-up, the focus moves to the actual value of geometric and formal prefiguration and to the validity criteria that make its re-introduction desirable, both as educational discipline and design tool. In addition, it's suggested a line of research related to its critical update and the methods through which figure out the possible outcomes of its application. Particular attention is given to the prototype: only the material realization allows to obtain a tangible result to creative speculation. In the last part 7 stone prototypes will be presented. They have been developed during recent years as a result of the attempt to combine multiple instances into a synthetic architectural object.

Abstract:
The second chapter traces in detail how Ondaatje’s text engages in what Askin terms disfiguration—the very process of disfiguring its representational surface both in terms of content and form—in order to unearth its constitutive sensations. Disfiguration makes tangible what otherwise remains intangible, the very constitution and genesis of actual narratives from virtual sensations. In The Collected Works of Billy the Kid disfiguration is most prominently on display in a series of becomings the protagonist undergoes culminating in his metaleptic account of his own death where his brain breaks apart and thus literally kills off representation. It is in staging such acute moments of representational crisis that the narrative reaches the impersonal and nonhuman beyond of personal and human experience. By the same token the beyond of actual narratives is attained: the sensations and forces that make up the death of Billy are those that make up the narrative at hand in so far as it is the narrative that assembles and composes the figure of Billy. It is thus that The Collected Works of Billy the Kid can be said to be a Deleuzian monument of sensation.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 turns from social fictions to fictive renderings of the wide and variegated world of trade. Early modern merchandise mirrored—and fueled—the poetic imagination. In turn, poets conjured fantastic visions of the world structured by trade. Ben Jonson’s Volpone exemplifies the period association of circulating commodities with poetic creativity: between world and word. Yet the play, remarkably, lacks debt relations. Decades later, Jonson revisits the relationship between word and world in his late, strange The Magnetic Lady, where credit takes center stage. The play’s figure of commerce, Moth Interest, is a moneylender whose verbal and imaginative capacity marks him as an heir of Jonson’s Volpone but renders him out of place in an economy increasingly oriented towards abstract capital and away from tangible wealth. Reading this play alongside tables of compound interest and tables of logarithms, the chapter argues that the play represents a world turning toward the abstract and numerical, and away from the verbal and material. It thus signals an end to the fictions of credit that had animated the Shakespearean stage: fictions that were fundamentally local and dialogic, developed in the interplay of artifice and interpretation.

Abstract:
“I wonder . . .” This simple phrase projects an openness to possibilities. It reveals a readiness to contemplate. It suggests a willingness to explore and be momentarily confused. When we cultivate curiosity in our classes, we enter into a world of possibility, and we invite our students to join us: • “What would happen if . . . ?” • “How could we solve this problem?” • “What might be a reason that happened?” • “Can you imagine why he said that? What might he have meant?” • “How would you explain her idea?” Whether in the classroom or in the teachers’ lounge, showing interest in another’s ideas can prompt mutual wondering. Being curious about what and how others think can be a purposeful attitude. Curiosity invites questions: “How did you figure that out?” “What made you decide on that choice?” When we release ourselves from the “one answer” orientation that standardized testing can produce, we spark vibrancy in our students. Creative problem- solving can become a habit of mind, a natural way to think. Whether the problem is tangible or imagined, opening students’ minds to “What else could it be?” can enliven their interest in learning and their fascination with their own minds. Whether in the context of a lesson, a creative project, or a conflict resolution, cultivating curiosity can open us to questions we may never have asked and understandings we may never have imagined.

Abstract:
Xiao Hong (1911-1942), original name Zhang Naiying, lived through the first half of the twentieth century, leaving behind the image of a socially engaged writer, sensitive to the issues connected to the people of her troubled homeland, in the North East of China. After an initial enthusiastic reception of her most representative novel, The Field of Life and Death (1935) in the literary arena, she was later neglected by Chinese critics, and excluded from the Maoist literary canon, as her fictional creatures and her works did not fit the optimistic spirit and the class consciousness requested to the intellectuals of the time. She was then re-discovered only in the 1980s, when both in China and the West her works have been re-read with a feminist or cultural studies approach. In this paper I explore the personal and literary forms of escape underpinning her figure and literary production. Exile, escape, uncertainty are the key words which can adequately describe Xiao Hong’s life and writing, in which, as Yan Haiping (2006, 136) states, one can find the sense of a ‘mobile violence’, due to her choices both as a woman (who revolted against her traditionally bound clan) and as a writer, who adopted a quite innovative, fragmented style combining personal memories and a crude and yet poetic realism. The literary practice which mainly expresses her constant escape from stereotypes, ignorance and conventional fetters is the representation of a dislocated female body subject to any kind of violence and humiliation: Xiao Hong’s ‘placeless bodies’ (Yan Haiping 2006, 146) are tangible marks of subjugation but also of resilience against a gendered destiny, which let her construct her literary and personal identity on a popular standpoint.

Abstract:
Nin makes a strong point: gifts accrue from delving into one’s innermost core through writing. When I first wrote about the power of words and writing in the helping professions, I was criticized. Many believed that writing diluted the therapeutic process because it disengaged the writer from the immediate experience. But, of course, that’s the point. Writing provides a resource for gaining perspective, developing self-awareness, and integrating knowledge. It involves an array of senses—sight, touch, perhaps even the sound of a pencil scratch or the smell of wet ink. The very act of writing allows you to manipulate and wrestle with thoughts in special ways because it makes thoughts visible and tangible. It makes intentional and systematic your own as well as students’ inquiry into learning and practice. Writing is a vehicle for self-study, self-reflection, and self-discovery. It is a valuable supplement to the teaching process, stimulating self-observation. You and some of your students may be intimidated by the idea of putting thoughts down in black and white; it takes courage. Multiple benefits, however, accrue from the effort. This chapter highlights the multifaceted merits and flexible use of a few different platforms of writing for you as well as students. It offers an assortment of strategies to highlight its efficacy. Jung advocated writing as a tool to make sense of our experiences, of cause-and-effect relationships, of what is happening and why. It does so because representations of the right hemisphere are integrated with interpreting ones of the left. Writing helps us to figure out our own minds as well as access others’. Pulling back from the immediate situation, writing as self-study puts Dewey’s and Schon’s ideas of reflective thinking into concrete terms. In all its forms, writing is an effective tool for observation and disclosure. It is not a substitute for, but rather an enhancement to interactive, person-to-person learning transactions. It is complementary and supplementary. It gives voice to students’ and your own ideas, feelings, and patterns. It adds coherence to memories, thoughts, and inuitions. It facilitates communication, since sharing one’s writing reduces the distance between students and each other, and between students and faculty.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Catholic religious authority in the context of the production and consumption of ecclesiastical architecture and art. It moves beyond consideration of this material culture from nation-state or formalist art-historical perspectives to explore the levels of human autonomy and agency that came to bear on building and decorating projects at the turn of the nineteenth century. Using a case study model, it analyses the multiple forms of authority inscribed in Catholic Church buildings whose aesthetic shifted from the modest to the sublime during the period. In so doing, it demonstrates the impact of religious power on architects, transnational commercial art industry businesses, and lay donors, and produces a more nuanced cross-disciplinary picture of the multiple cultural meanings, tangible and intangible, of nineteenth-century ecclesiastical architecture and the people behind its production.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper describes a project known internally as "InWell" to address multiple requirements in Repsol Drilling & Completions. InWell is defined by a new Operating Model comprising Governance, People, Process, Functions and Technology. This paper addresses changes to the Technology element - often referred to as "Digitalization". The paper includes a discussion about the business transformation strategy and case studies for addressing three of 18 functionalities identified in the first round of development. The InWell development strategy followed four steps; identification of performance issues, envisioning of a future operating model, identification of functionalities required/supporting this operating model and matching to digital solutions. Our case studies focus on three functionalities provided by three separate companies, Unification of Planning and Compliance, Real Time Data aggregation and Key Performance Indicators. Each functionality was addressed with an existing commercial application customized to meet specific requirements. A corporate web-based Well Construction Process (WCP) was initially piloted and then extended to include all well projects. The WCP identifies the key Tasks that must be completed per project, and these are all tracked. Data from this application is used by a third-party Business Analytics application via an API. Real time data from many sites and a wide range of sources was aggregated and standardized, Quality Controlled and stored within a private secure cloud. The data collation service is an essential building block for current third-party applications such as the operating centre and is a prerequisite for the goal of increased automation. A suite of Operator specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and data analytics services were developed for drilling and completions. Homogenized KPIs for all business units provide data for objective performance management and apples-to-apples comparison. Results are presented via custom dashboards, reports, and integrations with third party applications to meet a wide range of requirements. During a four-month Pilot Phase the InWell Project delivered € 2.5 million in tangible savings through improvements in operational performance. In the first 12 months € 16 million in savings were attributed to InWell. By 2022 forecast savings are expected to exceed € 60 million (Figures 1 & 2). The value of Intangible benefits is thought to exceed these objective savings. Figure 1 The Business Case for InWell – Actual & Projected Savings and Costs. Figure 2 InWell Services addressing Value Levers and quantified potential impact. A multi-sourced digital strategy can produce quick gains, is easily adapted, and provides high value at low risk. The full benefit of digital transformation can only be realised when supported by an effective business operating model.

Abstract:
The Savannah River Site (SRS) Figure 1 is a 310-square-mile United States Department of Energy nuclear facility located along the Savannah River near Aiken, South Carolina. During operations, which started in 1951, hazardous substances (chemicals and radionuclides) were released to the environment. The releases occurred as a result of inadvertent spills and waste disposal in unlined pits and basins which was common practice before environmental regulations existed. The hazardous substances have migrated to the vadose zone and groundwater in many areas of the SRS, resulting in 515 waste units that are required by environmental regulations, to undergo characterization and, if needed, remediation. In the initial years of the SRS environmental cleanup program (early 1990s), the focus was to use common technologies (such as pump and treat, air stripping, excavation and removal) that actively and tangibly removed contamination. Exclusive use of these technologies required continued and significant funding while often failing to meet acceptable clean-up goals and objectives. Recognizing that a more cost-effective approach was needed, SRS implemented new and complementary remediation methods focused on active and passive technologies targeted to solve specific remediation problems. Today, SRS uses technologies such as chemical / pH-adjusting injection, phytoremediation, underground cutoff walls, dynamic underground stripping, soil fracturing, microbial degradation, baroballs, electrical resistance heating, soil vapor extraction, and microblowers to more effectively treat contamination at lower costs. Additionally, SRS’s remediation approach cost effectively maximizes cleanup as SRS works proactively with multiple regulatory agencies. Using GIS, video, animation, and graphics, SRS is able to provide an accurate depiction of the evolution of SRS groundwater and vadose zone cleanup activities to convince stakeholders and regulators of the effectiveness of various cleanup technologies. Remediating large, complex groundwater plumes using state of-the art technologies and approaches is a hallmark of years of experience and progress. Environmental restoration at SRS continues to be a challenging and dynamic process as new cleanup technologies and approaches are adopted.
