The tangram is a versatile manipulative used to teach and learn such concepts as shapes, spatial relationships, fractions, percents, area, and perimeter. When I introduce it to undergraduate preservice teachers, they are drawn to the tangram because of the creative ways in which the shapes can form images; the book Grandfather Tang's Story (Tompert 1990) illustrates this quality well.
