Scriven, Julia Gay. "Main Battle Tank crew in-tank activities and workload." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1993. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/32084.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has examined Main Battle Tank (MBT) crew activities and workload. The aims were to provide a package of workload and fatigue indicators for use during field exercises; to document the 'in tank' activities of MBT crew; to provide a task analysis which includes an indication of task demands, and to draw general conclusions concerning the practical assessment of human workload. It is in two volumes. The first volume, which is unclassified, gives the background, presents reviews of relevant literature on task analysis and workload and gives an overview of the thesis. It then documents the studies and experiments which were carried out in order to refine the methodology, and to select a battery of measures of workload and fatigue which were suitable for use on military exercises.

Karayumak, Turker. "Modeling And Stabilization Control Of A Main Battle Tank." Phd thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613767/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, a parametric model for a main battle tank electric gun turret drive system stabilization controller has been developed. Main scope was the study of the muzzle deviation due to barrel flexibility. Traverse and elevation dynamics has been modeled to include the drive-line and barrel flexibilities. Order of the models has been kept large enough to cover the frequencies dominant in the interest scope but at the same time low enough to create a parametric model which can be used in real-time fire control computers. Therefore a 5-dof elevation and a 7-dof traverse models have been implemented. These models have been used to design a classical feedback and feedforward controllers which performed good enough to meet 0.5mrad stabilization accuracies. After satisfactory results have been obtained from the stabilization controller, a special coincidence algorithm has been implemented by time-series analysis of the disturbance signal which is constantly being measured by the feedforward gyro. Necessity of predicting the future muzzle angular orientation due to the latency in fire is discussed and by using autoregressive modeling of the disturbance signal, future values of the disturbance signal has been entered into the observer model. The prediction horizon has been set to the time delay value between the trigger is pulled by the gunner and the ammunition exit from the muzzle. By checking the future coincidence within a very narrow windowing (0.05mrad) a 100% first round hit probability in theory has been achieved. This is assured since the coincidence inhibited the fire signals which were to miss the aiming point with a large error.

Abstract:
This master thesis describes a study of the main battle tank dynamics in order to investigate the fire precision when a tank is driving in terrain. A model has been developed to simulate the dynamic interaction between the tank's hull and the ground irregularity in MATLAB and SIMULINK through the modelling of the tank's dynamics. Two different models of suspension system have been analysed. One linear model and one hydro-pneumatic model. Further the contribution from the cannon's recoil has been modelled to investigate its contribution to the dynamics of the vehicle. The models developed are on system level and is to be implemented in a larger model. Therefore are the models simplified and the thesis investigates to what degree of simplification the models will accurately predict the movement of the tank.

Biolchini, Gerald, and Karolyn Kinney. "Embedded training and the training requirements for the Abrams main battle tank." Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/10754.

Full text
Abstract:
Joint Applied Project
The Abrams tank has had an Operational Requirements Document (ORD) requirement for embedded training (ET) since 1994 and has successfully demonstrated the capability as early as 2001. The most challenging aspect of implementing ET has been to get the Abrams combat development community (User) and materiel development community (Product Manager) to equally consider the need for ET among competing combat capability. The need and priority for embedded training has not been effectively conveyed. Due to the interpretations of embedded training requirements, the direction to PM Abrams to implement embedded training has been weak at best, while the perceived User need for ET continues to grow. Since the technology has been demonstrated, the combat developer has begun to understand the capability and more effectively define the desired state (how he would use it and its benefits). Furthermore, the Army's style of fighting has changed; therefore, the Army's method of training must also change. Embedded training should be recognized by the materiel developer as an essential training tool necessary to keep Soldiers' skills sharp in the changing training environment.

Carlstedt, Arvid. "Modelling of electromechanical motors for turret and barrel control in main battle tanks." Thesis, KTH, Fordonsdynamik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-302277.

Full text
Abstract:
In this master thesis the dynamics of a modern main battle tank's turret traverse and gun elevation have been modelled. The models of dynamic motion have been coupled to two different types of electric motors, namely a direct-current motor and an induction motor. These have been modelled in MATLAB and SIMULINK together with the mechanical systems in the turret traverse and gun elevation. The goal of this project was to develop non-ideal models of the combined mechanical and electrical systems, but the main focus has been the dynamics of the electric motors.

Abstract:
In this paper, we looked at how media influence education and how to provide students with tools for analyzing media messages in order for them to be able to reflect on that influence and foster critical thinking. We summarized research on media literacy in English language teaching and discussed how that may increase students’ language learning and critical thinking skills. To concretize our findings we developed a lesson plan using a contemporary YouTube genre, Epic Rap Battles of History, and used that as a basis for our discussions. This resulted in a discussion on the advantages of using media literacy to teach English and practical examples of how to do this in an English 6 course. We show the importance of connecting language learning to practical application as well as providing students with opportunities to develop their analytical and critical skills.

Abstract:

The Swedish Armed forces have under the past years gone through some radical changes and some of them are still going on. As focus is set on manpower, the technologic development moves forward. I want to highlight what a common graphical information system could mean to commanders on lower command level at mechanized units. With this essay I want to create an understanding of common geographical information systems and what opportunities it could help with. In the essay I will find out if the systems could favor commanders in their leadership on the battlefield, as well which effects it could have on battle tactics. I also find out if the Swedish Armed forces with today’s equipment could procure such a system. Conclusions of the essay is that the Swedish Armed forces cant with today’s equipment procure such an system, because of the equipments obsolete status and the prominent restriction is data transfer rate. Other conclusions are that systems like these favor commanders in several perspectives. Most prominent, could system like these contribute to higher battle efficiency and favor for mechanized- mixed unit types.

McCarty, George E. Jr. "Integrating XML and RDF concepts to achieve automation within a tactical knowledge management environment." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/1648.

Abstract:

Since the advent of Naval Warfare, Tactical Knowledge Management (KM) has been critical to the success of the On Scene Commander. Today's Tactical Knowledge Manager typically operates in a high stressed environment with a multitude of knowledge sources including detailed sensor deployment plans, rules of engagement contingencies, and weapon delivery assignments. However the WarFighter has placed a heavy reliance on delivering this data with traditional messaging processes while focusing on information organization vice knowledge management. This information oriented paradigm results in a continuation of data overload due to the manual intervention of human resources. Focusing on the data archiving aspect of information management overlooks the advantages of computational processing while delaying the empowerment of the processor as an automated decision making tool. Resource Description Framework (RDF) and XML provide the potential of increased machine reasoning within a KM design allowing the WarFighter to migrate from the dependency on manual information systems to a more computational intensive Knowledge Management environment. However the unique environment of a tactical platform requires innovative solutions to automate the existing naval message architecture while improving the knowledge management process. This thesis captures the key aspects for building a prototype Knowledge Management Model and provides an implementation example for evaluation. The model developed for this analysis was instantiated to evaluate the use of RDF and XML technologies in the Knowledge Management domain. The goal for the prototype included: 1. Processing required technical links in RDF/XML for feeding the KM model from multiple information sources. 2. Experiment with the visualization of Knowledge Management processing vice traditional Information Resource Display techniques. The results from working with the prototype KM Model demonstrated the flexibility of processing all information data under an XML context. Furthermore the RDF attribute format provided a convenient structure for automated decision making based on multiple information sources. Additional research utilizing RDF/XML technologies will eventually enable the WarFighter to effectively make decisions under a Knowledge Management Environment.

Abstract:
Since the early 1990s a number of literary papers testify the vivid interest in the subjective composition of Müller’s writing. But none of these detailed devotes to Müller’s as autobiography assigned text WAR WITHOUT BATTLE – LIFE IN TWO DICTATORSHIPS. Until now the text has been only used as quarry of quotations, aid of interpretation and extensive poetological collection of material. Mainly the work is used as evidence of the intention of Müller’s writing and therefore receives an inadmissible degree of sovereignty of interpretation. The poetical dimension of the text is often inadequately reflected or even totally neglected and ignored. This text-critical examination will contribute to close this gap of research within the relevant secondary literature and encourage the recognition and discussion of the potential of Müller’s enormous and multifarious work beyond his as theatre work assigned texts. After the introduction of the situation of reception and the status of current research, the discussion of specific poetological questions in general such as autobiographical research, examination of genesis and formal specific features of texts, this paper will analyse the structural mechanisms of effect, which turn Müller’s disparate self-explication into an auto-drama. It seems suitable to return the meaning of generation on the structure-esthetical mechanisms of effect, as the proximity of text and selective analysis of the genesis of text is very close to Müller’s strategy of self-deconstruction. Particularly as Müller constructs his »Lebenserzählung« to similar structural principals as well as others of his »poetical« texts. The description of the disparate form of expression of the autobiographic I result in the text-immanent strategies of the enormous complex self-dramatisation of Müller; his »Theater der Schrift«.

All types of main battle tank (MBT) have been serving since 20 years ago. They are unable to suppress the artillery attack from MBT of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Facing to the military threat from PRC, the advanced weapons are in need for military to meet the goals of defense. At present, some weapons have been self-developing and integrating, but parts of assembly were still acquired by military procurement because of limitation in technical level, development cost and reality of diplomacy and finance. Therefore, it's resulted in precision weapons were not fully self-developed. The acquisition of MBT configuration can be provided as reference in the article. The operational requirement for the Republic of China (ROC) and performance parameter of MBT for countries were obtained by reviewing the literature in this study. According to the former result, the evaluation criteria for MBT performance was established and analyzed by Intercriteria Correlation(CRITIC) combined with Technique for Order Preferenceby Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The results show that the best solution is German Leopard 2A6, followed by the US M1A2. With the situation of limitation in diplomacy and military procurement, the main systems, subsystems or components of the Germany Leopard 2A6 can be purchased from Germany through the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science & Technology (NCSIST). Besides, the suitable weapon can be acquired by the integration of Dual-use after obtaining the blueprint or dimension sheet. Secondly, the US M1A2 should be selected under the support from US government if the German Leopard 2A6 can't be exported. Then the overall acquisition period can be shorten to meet the needs for conditions of readiness.
