Faulkner and Hemingway can probably be considered the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. In the mid 1960s, Fabbri entrusted the task of addressing their work and style to the militant critic Ruggero Jacobbi, who had shortly returned to Europe after a period of voluntary exile in Brazil. The two resulting volumes became pendant pieces in a unified meditation on the motives and movements of true poetry. Having become practically impossible to get hold of, Firenze University Press is now republishing them in the same format, preceded by an introduction by Nicola Turi. Thus the cr

Hokusai has been known in Europe and North America for some 150 years. In his own country, he came to public attention about 1800, with youthful work produced under the name of Shunrô. He lived to the advanced age of 88, and when he died in 1849, he was one of the best-known artists in Japan. He was soon to be the best-known Japanese artist in the West, a status that he probably still holds.

Abstract:
The conceptualization and moral analysis of discrimination constitutes a burgeoning theoretical field, with a number of open problems and a rapidly developing literature. A central problem is how to define discrimination, both in its most basic direct sense and in the most prominent variations. A plausible definition of the basic sense of the word understands discrimination as disadvantageous differential treatment of two groups that is in some respect caused by the properties that distinguish the groups, but open questions remain on whether discrimination should be restricted to concern only

Abstract:
People used to hold out great hope for a public square in which individuals put petty disputes aside and engage in rational discussion about important issues. Unfortunately, public discourse today—especially on the internet—is full of adults behaving like poorly socialized children, acting out to show off for people they want to impress. In short, they engage in moral grandstanding, or the use of moral talk for self-promotion. Drawing from work in psychology, economics, and political science, this book develops an explanation of why people grandstand when they talk about morality and politics.

This article examines what it means to teach at a community college from the viewpoint of two experienced faculty members. The comprehensive community college holds a unique place in American higher education, as it performs many functions, including workforce development, transfer education, and often developmental (remedial) education. The open-admissions nature of the community college gives anyone access to a college education or other training. That access results in a classroom that is different from those at four-year institutions. This article examines what it means to teach at the com

All building relations are a) asymmetric and irreflexive, b) necessitating in a very particular sense, and c) license generative talk. Each aspect of this characterization is discussed at length. Along the way, various recent defenses of the claim that such relations can hold symmetrically or reflexively are considered and rejected. Structural correspondence is the other exploitable relation that figures in our case studies. It is found in the cognitive map realized by place cells in the hippocampus. When an exploitable structural correspondence is exploited in the service of a system’s performance of its task functions, it is thereby constituted as a UE structural correspondence. In some cases where there is a superficially attractive structural correspondence, it can turn out that the correspondence is not being made use of; indeed, that structural representation does not arise. The colonial Home Department’s special expertise in governance by stealth—maximum order with the use of minimum force—was instrumental for it to acquire a secure niche within the colonial structure. Following the end of colonial rule in 1947, the Home Department mutated into the Ministry of Home Affairs of India. Like its predecessor, it is still ensconced in the majestic

Public reason theorists in political philosophy—roughly, Rawlsians—often make what sure sound like epistemological statements. They talk about justifying principles to others, about the uncertainty with which we should hold our evaluative commitments, about reasonable persons and comprehensive doctrines, about a morally politically motivated higher epistemic standard, about intellectual modesty, and, of course, about the burdens of judgment. But they rarely explain, let alone defend, these seemingly epistemological commitments, nor do they engage contemporary epistemological literature. This p

Berkeley holds that the perceived world is “a most coherent, entertaining and instructive discourse” which is ‘spoken’ by God. Berkeley intends this claim literally and holds that this discourse exhibits linguistic structure: it has a lexicography, a syntax, and a semantics. Interpreting Berkeley’s claims about the world as a divine discourse in light of Berkeley’s own philosophy of language produces compelling solutions to a number of difficulties in Berkeley’s metaphysics and epistemology. Until 1800, Hegel held that religion takes primacy over philosophy. That commitment alters fundamentally with his first publications in Jena. The Difference essay (1801) and Faith and Knowledge (1802) hold the key to the genesis of his mature thought. Chapter 1 focuses on Hegel’s efforts to define the task of philosophy and thereby to shore up his new position. Hegel’s first system program, dedicated to a holistic conception of reality, is shaped by his understanding of three central concepts: the absolute, speculation, and the system. Here the influence of Jacobi and Spinoza is formative. Cri
