Abstract:
The early stages of surface oxidation of biaxially textured Ni–W tapes were studied using thermodynamic calculations along with experimental tape oxidation at low P(O2). Tape phase and chemical composition, surface morphology, and roughness were examined using x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). For a Ni0.95W0.05 alloy tape, the precise position of the tape oxidation line in P(O2)–T coordinates was established. This line includes a break at T ≈ 650 °C that originates from the change of the W oxidation mechanism from internal oxidation to oxidation on a free surface accompanied by segregation of the alloy components in the tape near-surface region. The surface roughness of a polished tape increased drastically during internal oxidation of W; further tape oxidation did not affect the integral roughness parameters, but introduced numerous small (˜;100 nm) features on the tape surface comprising NiO precipitates.

Abstract:
Aim of study: To investigate how the cross section of a drip-irrigation tape affects local head loss.Area of study: The work was carried out in the laboratory of Irrigation hydraulics, College of Water Conservancy and Environment, Three Gorges University, Yichang, Hubei province.Material and methods: Tapes with six different wall thicknesses were studied experimentally to determine the relationship between cross-section deformation, wall thickness, and pressure. Based on the experimental results, we determined the factors that influence local head loss in drip-irrigation tapes by numerical simulation and dimensional analysis.Main results: The cross-sectional shape of the drip-irrigation tape varied with pressure: under low pressure, the cross section was nearly elliptical. The cross-sectional shape of the tape strongly influenced the local head loss, which was inversely proportional to the 0.867th power of the flattening coefficient of the drip irrigation tape. We expressed the local head loss of a drip-irrigation tape equipped with integrated in-line emitters by considering the deformation of the cross section. Under the conditions used in this study, when the cross section is circular, the ratio of local head loss to frictional head loss was about 10% but, when the cross section is elliptical, this ratio increased to 15%.Research highlights: The shape of the cross section of a drip-irrigation tape is nearly elliptical under low pressure. Local head loss is inversely proportional to the 0.867th power of that is the flatting coefficient of the drip-irrigation tape. Local head loss is about 1.5 times for elliptical tape than circular tape.

Abstract:
A two year study of evaluate the valid service life of durable pavement markings on urban roads was conducted in Beijing as a pilot field study of Chinese national transportation product evaluation program and minimum retro-reflectivity requirements standards and road maintenance standards. 34 pavement marking lines including edge line, arrow, skip line, crossing line and stop line were installed on expressway and intersection. Marking materials included thermoplastic with glass beads, preformed thermoplastic tape with glass beads and preformed rubber based pavement tape. Service life evaluation was base on minimum value of durability and retro-reflectivity. Retro-reflectivity attenuation varies at different locations (express way, intersection), different marking functions (e.g., skip line, edge line) and different materials (thermoplastic or tape). It was found the more accumulated traffic, the more loss of retro-reflectivity. The most loss of retro-reflectivity happens at stop lines, skip line and cross line are better, arrows are less, edge line is the best. Cleanliness factor are also considered, retro-reflectivity significantly rises after cleaned. A maintenance schedule for different markings was given in this paper. Stop line, skip line and crossing line are suggested to be replaced every 12 months; arrow and edge line are suggested to be replaced every 24 months with a special concern of cleanliness at urban area.

Abstract:
More cables will be installed owing to setting up more radio towers when it comes to 5G. However, a large proportion of radio units are constructed high in the open space, which makes it difficult for human technicians to maintain the systems. Under these circumstances, automatic detections of errors among radio cabinets are crucial. Cables and connectors are usually covered with weatherproofing tapes, and one of the most common problems is that the tapes are not closely rounded on the cables and connectors. This makes the tape go out of the cable and look like a waving flag, which may seriously damage the radio systems. The thesis aims at detecting this flagging-tape and addressing the issues. This thesis experiments two methods for object detection, the convolutional neural network as well as the OpenCV and image processing. The former uses YOLO (You Only Look Once) network for training and testing, while in the latter method, the connected component method is applied for the detection of big objects like the cables and line segment detector is responsible for the flagging-tape boundary extraction. Multiple parameters, structurally and functionally unique, were developed to find the most suitable way to meet the requirement. Furthermore, precision and recall are used to evaluate the performance of the system output quality, and in order to improve the requirements, larger experiments were performed using different parameters. The results show that the best way of detecting faulty weatherproofing is with the image processing method by which the recall is 71% and the precision reaches 60%. This method shows better performance than YOLO dealing with flagging-tape detection. The method shows the great potential of this kind of object detection, and a detailed discussion regarding the limitation is also presented in the thesis.

For the past thirty years, many people around the world have been engaged in studies to determine how long tape will last. We have learned how to extend the life of tapes but no one has come up with a method for predicting the life of a tape. This paper will summarize the present-day recommended practices for tape care and storage and will also describe the most common tape problems and how to overcome them. The most common problem with playing an old tape is finding a machine to play it. Machine obsolescence is probably a bigger problem than tape degradation.

Abstract:
This investigation builds on a previous survey of the solid-state behaviour of pyridinedicarboxylate diesters, an overview of which is presented in Chapter 1. These compounds have been shown to form tape-like assemblies, mediated by a novel triple hydrogen bond motif. Chapter 2 examines the behaviour of a small subset of these compounds in solution, some of which appear to form tape-like aggregates, as studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Variable temperature Raman spectroscopy has been used to observe the disruption of the crystal architecture as the sample is heated past its melting point, and the increased strength of the tapes formed by the 2,6-diesters compared to those of the 3,5-analogues has been quantitatively demonstrated by DSC. The results of X-ray diffraction studies on the single crystals of a number of diesters formed with naphthalene and anthracene side-arms are described in Chapter 3. This series of compounds has allowed the effect of changing both the length of the alkyl linker and its position of attachment to the polyaromatic to be considered. The solid-state behaviour of a number of chlorinated and methylated diesters are compared in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 examines the crystal architecture of a number of asymmetrical monoesters and the behaviour of these systems is compared to that of the analogous diesters. Chapter 6 details the progress made towards the use of the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate synthon in the synthesis of functional materials. The solid-state behaviour of a number of other pyridine derivatives prepared during the course of the present study is described in Chapter 7.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Japan, corticosteroid tapes and plasters have long served as a first-line therapy for keloids and hypertrophic scars. Pediatric patients are particularly responsive to this type of treatment. This may reflect the fact children have thinner skin than adults and the steroids are therefore more easily absorbed. The postoperative application of corticosteroid tapes/plasters also significantly prevents the development of keloids and hypertrophic scars after surgery. Steroid tape is available in the following three countries in different preparations. In the UK, the commercially available formulation comprises a fludroxycortide-impregnated tape (4 μg/cm2). Fludroxycortide tape is a Group III preparation. The USA has a steroid tape preparation that contains 4 μg/cm2 flurandrenolide, which is also a Group III preparation. In Japan, two steroid tape formulations are available, namely, the Group III preparation found in the UK (4 μg/cm2 fludroxycortide tape) and a 20 μg/cm2 deprodone propionate tape. Deprodone propionate tape is considered to be a Group I or II preparation. In our experience, deprodone propionate tape (Eclar® plaster) is the most effective tape for the treatment and prevention of keloids.

Abstract:
A six-week term project used in a senior-level mechatronics course at Cal Poly State University is described. In this project, teams of students each design and build an autonomous, line-tracking vehicle to compete in an end-of-quarter competition. The rules for the project are as follows: Design, build and demonstrate a microcontroller-controlled vehicle to race two laps around a closed course delineated by white tape on a black table. On the first lap, the vehicle will encounter two racquetballs positioned randomly on straightaway sections of the track. The vehicle should capture both racquetballs, bring the captured balls back to the starting area, and place the captured balls into a corral situated adjacent to the start/finish line. Each vehicle is scored on elapsed time and reliability, which are weighted equally. Time trials are held in the lab on Tuesday of the tenth and final week of class in the academic quarter. The fraction of teams achieving at least one successful run, that is, corralling both balls after completing two laps, has steadily increased over the six times this project has been used, and has recently been as high as 100 percent. Similarly, the record elapsed times have steadily fallen.

Abstract:
The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a common, semi-aquatic rodent native to the United States. It spends its life in aquatic habitats and is well adapted for swimming. Although muskrats are an important part of native ecosystems, their burrowing and foraging activities can damage agricultural crops, native marshes and water control systems, such as aquaculture and farm ponds and levees. Such damage can significantly impact agricultural crops like rice that rely on consistent water levels for growth. Laws, regulations, and ordinances regarding the take of muskrats varies by state and province where they are found and regulations on seasons, bag limits, and type of traps or devices that can be used to take them must be carefully followed.

McKnight, Katherine, and Elizabeth Glennie. Are You Ready for This? Preparing for School Change by Assessing Readiness. RTI Press, March 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2019.pb.0020.1903.

Full text
Abstract:
Schools routinely face federal and state mandated changes, like the Common Core State Standards or standardized testing requirements. Sometimes districts and schools want to take on new policies and practices of their own, like anti-bullying programs or using technology to deliver instruction. Regardless of the origin of the change, implementation requires them to take on additional work; yet experts estimate that only 30 to 50 percent of major change efforts in organizations will succeed. Failing change efforts result in not only financial losses but also lowered organizational morale, wasted resources, and lost opportunities. For schools where resources are already stretched thin, the consequences of failed change initiatives can be particularly devastating. In this paper, we discuss results of a study, over a school year, of school principals who were working on implementing a new change initiative in their schools. We apply lessons from the change management literature and focus on the importance of assessing readiness for change as a key step in ensuring the success of new initiatives. We share examples of a change readiness rubric to help schools and districts successfully lead change.

Abstract:
The long-term impacts of global upheaval unleashed by Covid-19 on economic, political, social configurations, trade, everyday life in general, and broader planetary sustainability issues are still unfolding and a full assessment will take some time. However, in the short term, the disruptive effects of the pandemic on health, education, and behaviors and on science and education have already manifested themselves profoundly – and the chemistry arena is also deeply affected. There will be ramifications for many facets of chemistry’s ambit, including how it repositions itself and how it is taught, researched, practiced, and resourced within the rapidly shifting post-Covid-19 contexts. The implications for chemistry are discussed hereunder three broad headings, relating to trends (a) within the field of knowledge transfer; (b) in knowledge application and translational research; and (c) affecting academic/professional life.

Altamirano, Álvaro, and Nicole Amaral. A Skills Taxonomy for LAC: Lessons Learned and a Roadmap for Future Users. Inter-American Development Bank, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002898.

Abstract:
This note brings together lessons from the IDBs and other institutions efforts to adapt a skills taxonomy for Latin America and the Caribbean countries. These efforts have focused primarily on the ability to gather and make use of labor market information on skills demand from non-traditional data sources like online job vacancies. Most of these efforts have used the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) taxonomy to underpin the identification and classification of skills. This note is intended to be a starting point and set of considerations for policymakers who may be considering, or already embarking on, similar efforts to use ESCO or other taxonomical structures to help better analyze, understand and use skills-level information for decision making. It also seeks to motivate the need for additional classification systems that help governments take stock of its citizens skills in increasingly complex and rapidly changing labor markets.

Boda, Phillip, and Steven McGee. Supporting Teachers for Computer Science Reform: Lessons from over 20,000 Students in Chicago. The Learning Partnership, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51420/brief.2021.1.

Abstract:
As K12 computer science education is expanding nationwide, school districts are challenged to find qualified computer science teachers. It will take many years for schools of education to produce a sufficient number of certified computer science teachers to meet the demand. In the interim courses like Exploring Computer Science (ECS) can fill the gap. ECS is designed to provide a robust introduction to computer science and the accompanying professional development is structured such that a college level understanding of computer science is not required. This brief summarizes research with 20,000 Chicago Public Schools high school students and their teachers to test the claim that the ECS professional development can provide an adequate preparation for teaching ECS. The results provide strong evidence that full completion of the ECS professional development program by teachers from any discipline leads to much higher student outcomes, independent of whether a teacher is certified in computer science.

Cummings, John. Geese, Ducks and Coots. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, August 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2016.7208739.ws.

Abstract:
Canada geese, snow geese, ducks, and American coots all have been implicated in agricultural crop and turf damage. Generally, goose, duck, and American coot damage to crops, vegetation and aircraft can be difficult to identify. Usually the damage to crops or vegetation shows signs of being clipped, torn, or stripped. Tracks, feces, or feathers found neat the damage can be used to help identify the species. Damage to aircraft is obvious if the bird is recovered, but if not, and only bird parts are recovered, a scientific analysis is required. Canada geese, snow geese, ducks, and American coots are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), which stipulates that, unless permitted by regulation, it is unlawful to “pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, possess, sell, barter, purchase, ship, export, or import any migratory birds alive or dead, or any part, nests, eggs, or products thereof.” Generally, geese, ducks, and coots can be hazed without a federal permit in order to prevent damage to agriculture crops and property with a variety of scare techniques. In most cases, live ammunition cannot be used.

Nolan, Brian, Brenda Gannon, Richard Layte, Dorothy Watson, Christopher T. Whelan, and James Williams. Monitoring Poverty Trends in Ireland: Results from the 2000 Living in Ireland survey. ESRI, July 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.26504/prs45.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is the latest in a series monitoring the evolution of poverty, based on data gathered by The ESRI in the Living in Ireland Surveys since 1994. These have allowed progress towards achieving the targets set out in the National Anti Poverty Strategy since 1997 to be assessed. The present study provides an updated picture using results from the 2000 round of the Living in Ireland survey. The numbers interviewed in the 2000 Living in Ireland survey were enhanced substantially, to compensate for attrition in the panel survey since it commenced in 1994. Individual interviews were conducted with 8,056 respondents. Relative income poverty lines do not on their own provide a satisfactory measure of exclusion due to lack of resources, but do nonetheless produce important key indicators of medium to long-term background trends. The numbers falling below relative income poverty lines were most often higher in 2000 than in 1997 or 1994. The income gap for those falling below these thresholds also increased. By contrast, the percentage of persons falling below income lines indexed only to prices (rather than average income) since 1994 or 1997 fell sharply, reflecting the pronounced real income growth throughout the distribution between then and 2000. This contrast points to the fundamental factors at work over this highly unusual period: unemployment fell very sharply and substantial real income growth was seen throughout the distribution, including social welfare payments, but these lagged behind income from work and property so social welfare recipients were more likely to fall below thresholds linked to average income. The study shows an increasing probability of falling below key relative income thresholds for single person households, those affected by illness or disability, and for those who are aged 65 or over - many of whom rely on social welfare support. Those in households where the reference person is unemployed still face a relatively high risk of falling below the income thresholds but continue to decline as a proportion of all those below the lines. Women face a higher risk of falling below those lines than men, but this gap was marked among the elderly. The study shows a marked decline in deprivation levels across different household types. As a result consistent poverty, that is the numbers both below relative income poverty lines and experiencing basic deprivation, also declined sharply. Those living in households comprising one adult with children continue to face a particularly high risk of consistent poverty, followed by those in families with two adults and four or more children. The percentage of adults in households below 70 per cent of median income and experiencing basic deprivation was seen to have fallen from 9 per cent in 1997 to about 4 per cent, while the percentage of children in such households fell from 15 per cent to 8 per cent. Women aged 65 or over faced a significantly higher risk of consistent poverty than men of that age. Up to 2000, the set of eight basic deprivation items included in the measure of consistent poverty were unchanged, so it was important to assess whether they were still capturing what would be widely seen as generalised deprivation. Factor analysis suggested that the structuring of deprivation items into the different dimensions has remained remarkably stable over time. Combining low income with the original set of basic deprivation indicators did still appear to identify a set of households experiencing generalised deprivation as a result of prolonged constraints in terms of command over resources, and distinguished from those experiencing other types of deprivation. However, on its own this does not tell the whole story - like purely relative income measures - nor does it necessarily remain the most appropriate set of indicators looking forward. Finally, it is argued that it would now be appropriate to expand the range of monitoring tools to include alternative poverty measures incorporating income and deprivation. Levels of deprivation for some of the items included in the original basic set were so low by 2000 that further progress will be difficult to capture empirically. This represents a remarkable achievement in a short space of time, but poverty is invariably reconstituted in terms of new and emerging social needs in a context of higher societal living standards and expectations. An alternative set of basic deprivation indicators and measure of consistent poverty is presented, which would be more likely to capture key trends over the next number of years. This has implications for the approach adopted in monitoring the National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Monitoring over the period to 2007 should take a broader focus than the consistent poverty measure as constructed to date, with attention also paid to both relative income and to consistent poverty with the amended set of indicators identified here.
