Abstract:
More cables will be installed owing to setting up more radio towers when it comes to 5G. However, a large proportion of radio units are constructed high in the open space, which makes it difficult for human technicians to maintain the systems. Under these circumstances, automatic detections of errors among radio cabinets are crucial. Cables and connectors are usually covered with weatherproofing tapes, and one of the most common problems is that the tapes are not closely rounded on the cables and connectors. This makes the tape go out of the cable and look like a waving flag, which may seriously damage the radio systems. The thesis aims at detecting this flagging-tape and addressing the issues. This thesis experiments two methods for object detection, the convolutional neural network as well as the OpenCV and image processing. The former uses YOLO (You Only Look Once) network for training and testing, while in the latter method, the connected component method is applied for the detection of big objects like the cables and line segment detector is responsible for the flagging-tape boundary extraction. Multiple parameters, structurally and functionally unique, were developed to find the most suitable way to meet the requirement. Furthermore, precision and recall are used to evaluate the performance of the system output quality, and in order to improve the requirements, larger experiments were performed using different parameters. The results show that the best way of detecting faulty weatherproofing is with the image processing method by which the recall is 71% and the precision reaches 60%. This method shows better performance than YOLO dealing with flagging-tape detection. The method shows the great potential of this kind of object detection, and a detailed discussion regarding the limitation is also presented in the thesis.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California
For the past thirty years, many people around the world have been engaged in studies to determine how long tape will last. We have learned how to extend the life of tapes but no one has come up with a method for predicting the life of a tape. This paper will summarize the present-day recommended practices for tape care and storage and will also describe the most common tape problems and how to overcome them. The most common problem with playing an old tape is finding a machine to play it. Machine obsolescence is probably a bigger problem than tape degradation.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation builds on a previous survey of the solid-state behaviour of pyridinedicarboxylate diesters, an overview of which is presented in Chapter 1. These compounds have been shown to form tape-like assemblies, mediated by a novel triple hydrogen bond motif. Chapter 2 examines the behaviour of a small subset of these compounds in solution, some of which appear to form tape-like aggregates, as studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Variable temperature Raman spectroscopy has been used to observe the disruption of the crystal architecture as the sample is heated past its melting point, and the increased strength of the tapes formed by the 2,6-diesters compared to those of the 3,5-analogues has been quantitatively demonstrated by DSC. The results of X-ray diffraction studies on the single crystals of a number of diesters formed with naphthalene and anthracene side-arms are described in Chapter 3. This series of compounds has allowed the effect of changing both the length of the alkyl linker and its position of attachment to the polyaromatic to be considered. The solid-state behaviour of a number of chlorinated and methylated diesters are compared in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 examines the crystal architecture of a number of asymmetrical monoesters and the behaviour of these systems is compared to that of the analogous diesters. Chapter 6 details the progress made towards the use of the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate synthon in the synthesis of functional materials. The solid-state behaviour of a number of other pyridine derivatives prepared during the course of the present study is described in Chapter 7.

Huenemann, Jeannine. "Going Solo with Roald Dahl: Life Rewritten Through Memory." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1003.

Full text
Abstract:
Roald Dahl does not easily fit into a category as a writer, contributing fiction and nonfiction to both children and adult audiences. Faced with this ambiguity, the literary community has mostly ignored his contributions since he is mainly viewed as a children‘s author. Late in life, Dahl created two autobiographies, Boy: Tales of Childhood (1984), and Going Solo (1986), as venues for sharing his many embellished, personal stories. This thesis focuses on Going Solo, the second of these two books which explores Dahl‘s three-year departure from England, including his enlistment in the Royal Air Force during World War II. During this same time period, he wrote 126 personal letters and telegrams to his family. He had experienced much change in his life during the nearly fifty-year gap from when the letters were written to when he crafted Going Solo for a more general audience. By comparing this personal correspondence to Going Solo, it is possible to see how memory and self-selection permitted the author to craft a personal narrative interested as much in reconstructing his public persona as recounting true events from his past. This thesis asserts that Dahl does not rely exclusively on his letters when reconstructing the narrative and instead inserts himself into a larger historical narrative. Dahl used Going Solo to point to the locations where his personal narrative collides with history and emotions. This is particularly true in the last half of the book where he comes to rely on historical touchstones. It is full of places and people which evoke memories and strong feelings for him. Dahl also relied on techniques and motifs found in folktales, features that make his work of particular interest to folklorists. The final chapter offers an examination of these techniques used in The BFG, Dahl‘s most autobiographical work of children‘s literature, written only four years prior to Going Solo. By paying closer attention to his methodology, we gain a clearer understanding of how folklore functions in the development of literary personal narrative.

Atkin, Jason Adam David. "On-line decision support for take-off runway scheduling at London Heathrow Airport." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12474/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research problem considered in this thesis was presented by NATS, who are responsible for the take-off runway scheduling at London Heathrow airport. The sequence in which aircraft take off is very important and can have a huge effect upon the throughput of the runway and the consequent delay for aircraft awaiting take-off. Sequence-dependent separations apply between aircraft at take-off, some aircraft have time-slots within which they must take-off and all re-sequencing performed by the runway controller has to take place within restrictive areas of the airport surface called holding areas. Despite the complexity of the task and the short decision time available, take-off sequencing is performed manually by runway controllers. In such a rapidly changing environment, with much communication and observation demanded of the busy controller, it is hardly surprising that sub-optimal mental heuristics are currently used. The task presented by NATS was to develop the decision-making algorithms for a decision support tool to aid a runway controller to solve this complex real-world problem. A design for such a system is presented in this thesis. Although the decision support system presents only a take-off sequence to controllers, it is vitally important that the movement within the holding area that is required in order to achieve the re-sequencing is both easy to identify and acceptable to controllers. A key objective of the selected design is to ensure that this will always be the case. Both regulatory information and details of controller working methods and preferences were utilised to ensure that the presented sequences will not only be achievable but will also be acceptable to controllers. A simulation was developed to test the system and permit an evaluation of the potential benefits. Experiments showed that the decision support system found take-off sequences which significantly reduced the delay compared with those that the runway controllers actually used. These sequences had an equity of delay comparable with that in the sequences the controllers generated, and were achieved in a very similar way. Much of the benefit that was gained was a result of the decision support system having visibility of the taxiing aircraft in addition to those already queueing for the runway. The effects of uncertainty in taxi times and differing planning horizons are explicitly considered in this thesis. The limited decision time available ensures that it is not practical for a runway controller to consider as many aircraft as the decision support algorithms can. The results presented in this thesis indicate that huge benefits may be possible from the development of a system to simplify the sequencing task for the controllers while simultaneously giving them greater visibility of taxiing aircraft. Even beyond these benefits, however, the system described here will also be seen to have further potential benefits, such as for evaluating the effects of constraints upon the departure system or the flexibility of holding area structures.

Sylvester, Sara. "A transfictive tale : life of the artist as a self-brand." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/106366/.

Full text
Abstract:
The body serves as a critical site of identity performance particularly when considering the implications of technology on construction of the self. This thesis investigates the growing interest in the development of transfictive artists as art practice and how through the use of multimedia platforms it is possible to create and establish a fictional identity through transmedia storytelling. Each of the fictional artists selected for this research, namely Susan Fielder, Donelle Woolford, Cherry Lazar, Ona Artist and Seren Sanclêr, function to draw the audience into exploring issues of identity, performance, in particular, the artist persona as exemplifying selfebrity. This original contribution to knowledge explores the ideas, concerns and ways of creating a transfictive heteronymic persona in relation to gender politics, the ways in which media convergence is utilised to develop identity, performance and the importance of self-branding. The case studies are discussed in relation to the above issues, demonstrating where appropriate the influence that digital media has had on contemporary art by offering new challenges and opportunities to explore issues of identity construction. By taking an autoethnography approach to explore identity performance, the research incorporates visual autoethnography to illuminate directly the construction process of crafting a fictive artist, Seren Sanclêr, as a site for the development of new knowledge about transfictive storytelling as a process to develop identity. What this particular thesis intends to examine is why artists are creating fictive artists and how this specific art practice reflects and informs the culture from which it emerges.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine change in symptoms of anxiety and satisfaction experienced by participants who received acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) by using technologically assisted psychotherapeutic interventions (TAPI). TAPI utilizes the internet as a medium to make mental health services available and accessible to people residing in rural communities. The participants in this study were women who were experiencing severe levels of anxiety and lived in a rural community. Measures were taken at three different points in the study (pretherapy, posttherapy, and 6-months posttherapy). Participants received therapy over the internet via Macromedia Breeze videoconferencing to reduce symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Seven women from rural Utah communities volunteered to participate in the study. This study found that symptoms of anxiety were reduced immediately posttherapy and that the change was sustained 6-months posttherapy. In regards to the satisfaction, participants indicated high levels of satisfaction with their TAPI experience. This high level of satisfaction was maintained 6-months posttherapy. (89 pages)
