Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the methods of restoration and repair of various parts of the equipment: shafts, couplings, splined and keyed joints. Recommendations on the choice of methods, equipment and tools are given. In case of wear, the keyway is repaired by welding the face with subsequent milling. At the same time, the keyway size set by the standard is maintained. Such repairs are also possible: the keyway is expanded and deepened, completely eliminating the traces of wear, after which a stepped key is made to it. However, with such repairs, a high-quality connection is not provi

Abstract:
Experiments were performed to study vortex shedding behind a linearly tapered cylinder. Four cylinders were used, with taper ratios varying from 50:1 to 100:1. The cylinders were each run at four different velocities, adjusted to cover the range of laminar vortex shedding for a non-tapered cylinder. The flow was confirmed to consist of discrete shedding cells, each with a constant frequency. For a centrespan Reynolds number greater than 100, the dimensionless mean cell length was found to be a constant. Individual cell size was found to be roughly self-similar. New shedding cells were created

Interpolated cubic splines were used to estimate diameters and partial or total volumes for 285 trees from Pinustaeda L. plantations in southern Brazil. A range of 4 to 13 interpolated points was tested in an attempt to determine how many points are necessary to adequately represent stem taper. The various number of combinations with 13 or fewer points for interpolation were compared with a full spline of 16 points, which according to pertinent literature, estimates volume similarly to the traditional volume formulas (Newton, Huber, Smalian). The results showed that 10 well-placed points are n

The paper deals with representation of individual stem profiles of beech and oak in White Carpathian Mountains, Czech Republic. Due to complicacy and irregularity of stem profiles of most trees common taper functions are not applicable for individual stem profile description. Selected spline functions were used to model the irregular stem profiles. To fit complicated stem profiles with a spline more input points are needed than for regular stems. The splines were computed using four fixed input points representing diameters in four conventional heights (base diameter, stump diameter, DBH and t

A new model for the free transverse vibration of axially functionally graded (FG) tapered Euler-Bernoulli beams is developed through the spline finite point method (SFPM) by investigating the effects of the variation of cross-sectional and material properties along the longitudinal directions. In the proposed method, the beam is discretized with a set of uniformly scattered spline nodes along the beam axis instead of meshes, and the displacement field is approximated by the particularly constructed cubic B-spline interpolation functions with good adaptability for various boundary conditions. Many structural failures in precast concrete buildings are initiated by connection failures. To avoid such failures, the connections should have enough strength to join the reinforcement bars between precast concrete panels. This paper presents the structural performance and behaviour of a proposed splice sleeve connection using generic steel pipe. The connection consisted of steel bars with tapered nuts confined in grouted steel pipes. The connections were subjected to increasing axial tension until failure. The results show that the use of smaller pipes gives better confinement effects and p

The collocation method is the method for the numerical solution of integral equations and partial and ordinary differential equations. The main idea of this method is to choose a number of points in the domain and a finite-dimensional space of candidate solutions. So, that solution satisfies the governing equation at the collocation points. The current paper involves developing, and a comprehensive, step-by step procedure for applying the collocation method to the numerical solution of free vibration of tapered Euler-Bernoulli beam. Abstract:
There is continued interest in nonlinear devices for different types of optical signal processing, such as Raman or parametric amplifiers. The small nonlinearity of conventional single-mode fibers sets a major limitation for these devices. A large nonlinearity can be achieved by having a large nonlinear coefficient, a small effective area, or both. Having a small effective area, however, requires efficient coupling to very small core fibers. A novel technique for splicing conventional single-mode fibers to small core fibers is proposed and demonstrated. The coupling efficiency obtained by thi

In this paper, a generalized approach is developed to optimize column configuration subjected to buckling load. The configuration utilizes B-spline contour to provide more freedom to model the column shape. Previous columns in literature use tapered or parabolic tapered for configuration. Two sample applications are optimized using Genetic Algorithm with the finite difference method to satisfy the buckling constraints. The length and load are fixed.
