Jones, Chris. Fossil Poems and the New Philology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198824527.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that a second phase of poetic Anglo-Saxonism began to overtake the first as the science of the New Philology began to make itself felt from the 1830s onwards. This rendered obsolete the first model of Anglo-Saxon as the living root of English literary tradition. Instead poets began to tap the etymological meaning of modern English words of Anglo-Saxon origin, as well to resurrect extinct words and grammatical forms from Anglo-Saxon. New readings of Walt Whitman and William Morris are made on the basis of unpublished manuscript evidence and William Barnes is identified as the first post-medieval poet to consciously imitate the alliterative rules of Anglo-Saxon poetry.

Kartomi, Margaret. South Sumatra. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036712.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the historical distribution of two musico-lingual groups living in South Sumatra: the Besemah in Tanjungsakti and Kayuagung, and the Ogan-Komering Ilir (OKI) people in Burai. South Sumatra's network of rivers and tributaries—known as the Batang Hari Sembilan—has governed its peoples' travels, worldviews, adat, legends, and musical arts for well over 2,000 years. This chapter explores how South Sumatra's environment and associated cosmology, adat customs, and the history of religion and foreign contact have shaped its musico-lingual groups and music, dance, and theater more generally. It first considers the Besemah's bardic legends and their classical and social dances and ensemble music, vocal music, and solo instrumental music before turning to the Anak Dalem people. It also describes the Ogan-Komering Ilir (OKI) river basins, the dance called tari tanggai, Palembang, and musical arts with a Muslim theme or flavor in the uplands and lowlands.

Clasen, Mathias. Vampire Apocalypse. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190666507.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Richard Matheson’s 1954 horror novel I Am Legend depicts the sole survivor of a vampire pandemic in his attempts to find companionship and meaning in a blasted apocalyptic world. Most literary critics engaging with the novel have interpreted the vampires as social or psychological symbols. They’ve overlooked their literal resonance as disease-bearing, unnatural predators well designed to activate evolved fears of predation and contagion. The chapter argues that the novel’s lasting power comes from the way Matheson taps into basic human anxieties—over predation, isolation, and a total loss of meaning—in his psychologically nuanced depiction of a flawed but sympathetic man’s struggles to survive and find fellow survivors after the apocalypse, and to find meaning in a secular antagonistic world. Matheson adapted the ancient vampire figure in his evocative exploration of one man’s psychological development in response to a hostile and meaningless world.

Tenney, James. Computer Music Experiences, 1961–1964. Edited by Larry Polansky, Lauren Pratt, Robert Wannamaker, and Michael Winter. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038723.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
James Tenney reflects on his experiences with computer music during the period 1961–1964. He recalls arriving at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in September 1961 with a number of what he calls musical and intellectual baggage, including various instrumental compositions reflecting the influence of Anton von Webern and Edgard Varèse; a dissatisfaction with all purely synthetic electronic music that he had heard up to that time, particularly with respect to timbre; and a growing interest in the work and ideas of John Cage. He left in March 1964 with six tape compositions of computer-generated sounds and a far better understanding of the physical basis of timbre, among others. Tenney goes on to discuss some of his compositions using computer-generated sounds, such as Analog #1: Noise Study, Four Stochastic Studies and Dialogue, Stochastic String Quartet, Ergodos I and Ergodos II, and Phases. He also describes his rise-time experiment on tone.

Escudier, Marcel. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198719878.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter the wide array of engineering devices, from the kitchen tap (a valve) to supersonic aircraft, the basic design of which depends upon considerations of the flow of gases and liquids, is shown. Much the same is true of most natural phenomena from the atmosphere and our weather to ocean waves, and the movement of sperm and other bodily fluids. In this textbook a number of the concepts, principles, and procedures which underlie the analysis of any problem involving fluid flow or a fluid at rest are introduced. In this Introduction, examples have been selected for which, by the end of the book, the student should be in a position to make practically useful engineering-design calculations. These include a dam, a rocket motor, a supersonic aerofoil with shock and expansion waves, a turbojet engine, a turbofan engine, and the blading of a gas turbine.

Abstract:
As the most widespread global language, English now has substantially more second and foreign-language speakers than native speakers. It is increasingly spreading beyond an ‘educated elite’ of academics, politicians, business professionals and the like, among speakers with limited access to formal education, that is at the grassroots of societies. Bringing together international contributors, this book explores uses of English in a variety of grassroots multilingual contexts, drawing on a diverse range of experiences, such as motorcycle taxi drivers, market vendors, cleaners, hotel staff, tour guides, migrant domestic workers, refugees and asylum seekers. Divided into three parts, the book explores the spread of English in former areas of British domination including Africa and the East, in trade and work migration, and in forced migration by refugees. The chapters present cutting edge case studies which draw on spoken data from Bahrainis, South Africans, Tanzanians, Ugandans, Bangladeshis in the Middle East, Italians in the UK, Indians in the US, and Nigerians and Syrians in Germany. This important and innovative volume presents a first documentation of world Englishes at the grassroots of societies and an empirical basis for their further study and theorising by integrating Englishes at the grassroots into existing models of English.

Full text
Abstract:

Dowding, Keith. It's the Government, Stupid! Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529206388.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Governments increasingly blame citizens for their own failed policies. Individuals can only be held responsible for the choices they reasonably make from the opportunities they have available to them. Government is the major agent in society that creates those opportunities for citizens. We know a good deal about how regulations and institutions affect social outcomes in various policy areas. This book examines five policy areas across the USA, UK and Australia: gun ownership, food manufacture, housing, gambling and recreational drugs. It demonstrates how different regulations affect gun crime, and how modern food manufacturers design their products to tap into basic human biological desires, creating the obesity crisis. Government policy over the last fifty years has produced a severe housing crisis. Gambling is an area where government has relaxed regulation to the benefit of many, but the detriment of the few, and needs to grapple with problems it has created, while recreational drugs is an area where government has remained paternalistic, performing the nanny role it refuses in other areas, despite the obvious failures of its regulatory stance. The book shows how government blames its citizens for the problems which arise from the government’s own policies. It’s the government’s responsibility, stupid.

Kolstø, Pål. Strategic Uses of Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict. Edinburgh University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474495004.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The cataclysmic upheavals in the Soviet Union during and after perestroika led to an upsurge of nationalism and ethnic conflicts. Not only the communist regime, but the unitary Soviet state exited the historical scene, leaving behind a power vacuum. Politics became a free-for-all: power was up for grabs, and nationalism in various guises – both as a programme for state legitimation and for ethnic mobilisation outside of and against the state –made itself felt on numerous political arenas. This development engendered renewed interest in nationalism studies generally, influencing the interpretation of conflicts also in other parts of the world. In this book, I do not try to answer the question what nationalism “is”, instead, I accept as a fact that nationalism has become a ubiquitous feature of politics in the modern world. I examine some of the ways nationalism has been used as a political strategy, by whom and for what purposes. I argue that national identities cannot be conjured out of thin air. they have to be based on the cultural reservoirs and historical memories of groups. Nationalism is mobilisation to promote the interests of an identity group, the imagined community of ‘the nation’. For some members of the nation (however understood), immaterial goods such as the possibilities to practise one’s culture and language may be paramount, whereas others hope to reap more mundane rewards. Precisely in situations when large numbers of people are caught up in nationalist enthusiasm, some may tap into this fervour, basing their careers on it.
