Full textThe objective of this thesis is to propose innovative hierarchical approaches to model dependence within and between risks in non-life insurance in general, and in a loss reserving context in particular. One of the most critical problems in property/casualty insurance is to determine an appropriate reserve for incurred but unpaid losses. These provisions generally comprise most of the liabilities of a non-life insurance company. The global provisions are often determined under an assumption of independence between the lines of business. However, most risks are related to each other in practice, and this correlation needs to be taken into account. Recently, Shi and Frees (2011) proposed to include dependence between lines of business in a pairwise manner, through a copula that captures dependence between two equivalent cells of two different runoff triangles. In this thesis, we propose to generalize this model with two different approaches. Firstly, by using hierarchical Archimedean copulas to accommodate correlation within and between lines of business, and secondly by capturing this dependence through random effects. The first approach will be presented in chapters 2 and 3. In chapter 2, we use partially nested Archimedean copulas to capture dependence within and between two lines of business, through calendar year effects. In chapter 3, we use fully nested Archimedean copulas, to accommodate dependence between more than two lines of business. A copula-based risk aggregation model is also proposed to accommodate dependence. The inference for the dependence structure is performed with a rank-based methodology to bring more robustness to the estimation. In chapter 4, we introduce the Sarmanov family of bivariate distributions to a loss reserving context, and show that its flexibility proves to be very useful for modeling dependence between loss triangles. This dependence is captured by random effects, through calendar years, accident years or development periods. Closed-form expressions are given, and a real life illustration is shown again. In chapter 5, we use the Sarmanov family of bivariate distributions in a dynamic framework, where the random effects are considered evolutionary and evolve over time, to update the information and allow more weight to more recent claims. Hence, we propose an innovative way to jointly model the dependence between risks and over time with an illustration in a ratemaking context. Finally, a brief conclusion recalls the main contributions of this thesis and provides insights into future research and possible extensions to the proposed works.

Full textEmit bayesian inferences, in other words revise his judgment about the appearance of an event, and change from prior probability to posterior probability, is a daily activity which, in theory, requires the Bayes’ rule. However, in practice, human is sensible to different bias and he doesn’t use systematically wisely all information at his disposal. Zhu & Gigerenzer (2006) showed that when data are presented in natural frequencies, bayesian performances increase. The reason is that base rate information is contained in natural frequencies (Hoffrage, Gigerenzer, Krauss, & Martignon, 2002). The aim of this work is to specify in what measure the format of presentation and the experimenter’s request about the judgment to product influence the bayesian performances of French schoolchild from the beginning to the end of secondary school. Groups of 20 participants from sixth grader to eleventh grade were tested on bayesian problems. The first three experiments progressively disregard number. Results confirm the easier effect of frequencies on the probabilities. The analyse of strategies used by participants indicates that we don’t have to be content with dichotomous quotation: bayesian versus no bayesian answer. In fact, our results specify that with the school advance participants make quantitative mistakes which are less and less distant of the theoretic answer, and estimate qualitatively more and more precisely the event occurrence. The fourth experience tries to make the link between the executive functions of low level, the processing speed and the school level in mathematical, on the one hand, and the bayesian performances, on the other hand. Results show that processing speed and inhibition predict moderately bayesian performances during the first middle of secondary school, but don’t during the second. The last experience is a longitudinal analyse of participants’ performances tested nineteen months later. Results support the transversal analyse ones, since the majority of participants produce better performances

Full textThis dissertation is given in two steps: the first one is devoted to prove, within a probabilistic framework, the results obtained in descriptive statistics; the second one shows the programming the specific case of lexicometrical variables. 1- Applying validation technics - resampling for instance - to the methods used in descriptive statistics - generally proved with algebra - implies a probabilistic proof. A more complex formalization than usually is needed to consider a factorial analysis mapping as an estimation. Therefore, some classical results are given in this alternate framework. 2- Using SPAD standarts, specific cluster analysis programs are proposed, adapted to events countings - as used in lexicometry. These programs involve a discussion of the choice for a distance and the algorithms. The FORTRAN listings are proposed with some examples to show the stability of the selected methods. An application is the coding of free answers in surveys, using the transcriptions as an input
