Abstract:
Summary In 2014 the discovery of a Mithras' statue at Tarquinia occurred. This was due to the Comando Tutela Patrimonio Culturale dell'Arma dei Carabinieri, which informed the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell'Etruria Meridionale about clandestine activities in May 2014 on the poggio della Civita – where the ancient city of Tarquinia stood – in a zone close to the Etruscan temple of the Ara della Regina (fig. 1). As soon as possible, the Soprintendenza carried out an archaeological excavation, focusing the effort on the need to find evidence for the place of origin of the magnificent sculptural group (fig. 2), which represents Mithras Tauroctonus. This sculpture was recovered by the Carabinieri after investigation by the police, directed by the Procura della Repubblica of the law court of Rome. Archaeological research since then has led to the discovery of another marble part of the same sculpture (fig. 3), i.e., the dog leaning on the knee of the bull and perfectly dovetailing with the Mithraic Tauroctony. The discovery of another fragment pertaining to the same sculpture is an irrefutable proof that the Mithras' statue came from the domus of the Civita of Tarquinia, which represents an important and new scientific result. The only other sculptural group depicting Mithras in Southern Etruria was one previously found in Vulci, discovered in 1975 after a clandestine excavation close to the domus del Criptoportico. This new finding proves the spread of this cult in Tarquinia, as well, and the style of the new sculpture suggests a chronological priority of the Tarquinian Mithraeum in respect to that in Vulci.

Abstract. Within the "Tarquinia Project" and the “Centro di Ricerca Coordinato”, involving different groups of the Università degli Studi di Milano (Archaeology, Computer Science and Communication, Geoarchaeology, Palaeoanthropology) and the Politecnico di Milano (Architecture and Conservation of Cultural Heritage), the carried out activities were aimed at defining the best methodologies for the documentation, analysis, study and conservation of the archaeological remains in the territory of Tarquinia. Within this broad framework, from 2010 the two research groups focused their efforts in the identification of the entire route of the ancient Tarquinia wall circuit and the archaeological structures it contains in order to create thematic maps of the archaeological remains of the “Pianoro della Civita”. The performed work examined the available historical documentation, proceeding in an extensive analysis of the marks that characterized the area. Given the complex morphology of the area, the ancient presence of the sites spread over fourteen centuries and the dense vegetation characterizing the slopes, in order to investigate the archaeological objects a laser scanner survey using LiDAR technology (Light Detection and Ranging) of the entire territory was performed. Through this system it was possible to carry out detailed geoarchaeological analysis, due the numerous phenomena of instability and runoff affecting the surfaces of the inhabited area and also involving the construction of the city wall circuit. These investigations, together with what emerges from the interpretation of the cartographies and the history of the archaeological analysis, made it possible to evaluate and verify the archaeological remains, contributing to the creation of the thematic maps of the ancient Tarquinian city walls.

Abstract:

This study deals with the painted tombs of Etruria, and especially of Tarquinia, in the Hellenistic time. Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the study of funerary set in Southern Etruria during the Hellenistic period based on a systematic gathering of all the data supplied by the numerous necropolis of the territory of Tarquinia, with particular attention to the « Etruria rupestre ». The detailed analysis of funerary set, coupled with that of funerary structures of the Etruscan-Roman site of Musarna, was the first step in a larger-scale reflection on the funeral and rituals practices attested in this region. Through the composition of the funerary assemblages, attempts have been made to identify elements that can better illustrate funerary customs and their evolution between the end of the 4th century BC. and the beginning of the 1st century BC., a chronological period characterized by the gradual conquest and colonization of the Etruscan territories, until the complete integration of the great metropolises in the Roman state. Through the elements highlighted, an attempt was made to answer a series of questions concerning several aspects of the funerary world directly related to the historical context: the status of the deceased, the gender specificity, the material or symbolic value of the deposits. The study of each deposition made it possible to highlight several aspects of the gestuality that takes place around the death of the deceased within this great cultural group, and its evolution during the different periods considered

Weir, Allison Jean. "Footsteps of the dead : iconography of beliefs about the afterlife and evidence for funerary practices in Etruscan Tarquinia." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3649.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of Etruscan attitudes to the afterlife, based on analysis of the funerary archaeology, architecture, and iconography of death from the ancient city of Tarquinia. The focus on one settlement allowed for a more precise reconstruction of funerary attitudes; it also avoided the pitfalls of approaching Etruscan civilisation as uniform and homogeneous across its varied city-states; and it made clear when particular beliefs about the afterlife changed or developed. After a general discussion of approaches to the subject in the published literature and of the specific conditions at the site of Tarquinia, it proceeds through a series of case studies chosen from each of the major periods of Etruscan civilisation from the Villanovan to the Hellenistic period. The analysis is based on published excavations and studies, supplemented by fieldwork conducted in Rome and at Tarquinia. The case studies were chosen based on the type of information that they can give about the way the underworld was imagined. No one tomb can be used to illustrate the entire set of beliefs and traditions that occurred at one time. Throughout the course of this study, I focus on the changes and developments of funerary traditions over the nine centuries of Etruscan civilisation at Tarquinia. The main finding to emerge from these studies relates to the long term stability of funerary practices at Tarquinia. As elsewhere in Etruria, there are changes in the scale and design of tombs and in the subjects and manner of their decoration. Yet it is difficult to identify any sudden discontinuities of practice. In a number of cases, it is argued that motifs that are well attested only in later periods can already be seen in the earlier material, while few themes introduced into the repertoire are ever completely lost. Rather, the same motifs are occasionally represented in different form from period to period. Whether the explanation is to be sought in the conservative influence of a small number of ruling families, or in the absence of social revolutions of the kind that characterised some Greek poleis, or in a conscious desire to preserve local, i.e. Tarquinian, traditions and styles, it seems that the history of Etruscan death is –in this case at least –not to be written in terms of dramatic changes so much as of gradual evolution and development. On this basis, a tentative account of the (local) Etruscan underworld is offered as it emerges from material drawn from all the periods studied.

Abstract:
The Thin-walled ware is one of the most represented class of vessel ceramic found on roman archaeological sites. An important batch (around 25000 shards) has been found in the various areas explored in one of the etrusco-roman cities of Tarquinia's territory: Musarna. The study of that Corpus allowed us to identify fifty-eight forms of vases and to trace their technological evolution. The parallels found with the material coming from others sites in Etruria, in the whole Italy and in the conquered territories have evidenced the existence of several productions areas. The Thin-walled ware from Musarna can be divided in six chronological phases, distributed between the last third of the II century B.C. and the II century A.D

Brown, D. "Deciphering the language of Etruscan dress : a hierarchical clustering analysis re-tailoring Tarquinian tomb painting." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3015866/.

Full text
Abstract:
Tarquinian tomb paintings are of an unrivalled artistic and cultural importance. The primary aim of this thesis is to identify and investigate their pictorial forms, language, and structures of painted dress, so as to re-tailor understanding of Tarquinia, its tombs, and its tomb paintings throughout the Archaic and Classical periods of ancient Italy (approx. 6th – 2nd century BC). Tarquinian painted dress is examined by the application of an original methodological approach, which identifies and investigates the structures of painted dress through the application of a hierarchical clustering analysis. Thereby, the thesis emphasises the significant versatility of dress as an investigative tool in the ancient world, and expands its study, and extends its forms of analysis. Methodologically, it innovatively quantifies Tarquinian tomb painting, which contrasts the typical qualitative and anecdotal methods usually applied when dealing with such visual imagery depicted amidst archaeological contexts. The analysis makes use of numerical procedures to divide a group of given units into homogeneous sub-groups, which allow for the visual inspection of an otherwise complex set of data-matrices. This statistically examines painted dress’s relationships to identify groupings of similarity from within a heterogeneous data-matrix. Seeking deeper structures not readily apparent on the surface, or revealed by more traditional modes of analysis, the study facilitates identification of painted dress’s arrangements, and examines their groupings by applying key tenets of contemporary dress theory. Trends of typological regularity, high frequency, but weak associative strength belonging to 6th – 5th century BC painted dress groupings are identified, as are trends of typological irregularity, low frequency, but strong associative strength, identified as belonging to 4th – 3rd/2nd century BC groupings. Thus, this study contributes a hitherto unidentified varying manipulation of non-verbal sartorial communication, which indicates consciously shifting choices, priorities, intentions, and decisions as to the communicative utilization of painted dress from the 6th – 3rd/2nd century BC. Therefore, painted Tarquinian dress is identified as a key form of non-verbal communication that conveys previously overlooked socio-cultural information, but the thesis also repositions tomb painting as a communicative device. Consequently, it provides new insight into Etruscan dress’s and painted tombs’ broader significance amidst wider Etruscan society.
