SummaryIn this report, we evaluated the effectiveness of scrotal tissue as an autogenous free skin graft to treat cutaneous degloving injuries of the distal limb in dogs. Surgery was performed on two male intact dogs with distal extremity degloving wounds. Dog #1 had a tarsal degloving wound with exposure of the distal tibial and tarsal bones. Dog #2 had a degloving injury over the metacarpals. Wounds were treated with daily wetto- dry bandages in order to develop a healthy bed of granulation tissue at the graft recipient site. Scrotal ablation castration was performed once the recipient site

SummaryGrafting of large bone defects caused by trauma or tumor resection still remains a problem to solve. In experimental studies as well as in human dentistry, osteoconduction and biodegradation of the β-tricalciumphosphate Cerasorb® as well as osteoinductive capabilities of platelet rich plasma have been proven. In case of luxation of the right tarsal joint, including a compressive fracture of the forth tarsal bone, the recommended use of autologous cancellous bone to support osseous fusion was replaced by the use of a bioartificial bone graft. SummaryTwo perforated stainless steel cylinders and autogenous cancellous bone were implanted into each of the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints of seven horses. In two control horses holes were drilled into each joint and autogenous cancellous bone was implanted without stainless steel cylinders. Horses which had cylinders implanted in the distal tarsal joints exhibited less lameness and were more comfortable following surgery than were the control horses. Fracture of the third tarsal, central tarsal, or third metatarsal occurred in five of the seven horses implanted with stainles

Abstract OBJECTIVE This retrospective study presents 33 years of clinical and surgical experience with 135 tibial nerve lesions to review operative techniques and their results and to provide management guidelines for the proper selection of surgical candidates. METHODS Between 1967 and 1999, 135 patients with tibial nerve lesions at the knee level or below were managed surgically at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. We reviewed these cases. RESULTS Of the 135 cases, traumatic injury accounted for 71, tarsal tunnel syndrome for 46, and nerve sheath tumor for 18. Of 22 lesi

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare dermatological condition which may present with ocular manifestations. We report a case of recurrent cicatricial ectropion (CE) with topical beta-blocker use in the rare dermatological condition PRP. The patient underwent release of scar tissue, lateral tarsal strip and full-thickness supraclavicular skin graft for CE following immunosuppression with methotrexate for 3 months. Postoperatively, CE recurred, with skin graft shrinkage and resumption of periocular disease activity, 8 weeks following the introduction of topical timolol. The patient was refer

Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the tarsal navicular, called the Mueller-Weiss syndrome, is an uncommon disease. Patients who are resistant to conservative treatment require operative treatment. However, there is no established operative treatment. Two cases of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the tarsal navicular with double (talonavicular and naviculocuneiform joints) arthrodeses with different locking plates are presented. Removal of necrotic areas from the tarsal navicular and replacement with autologous bone graft procured from the iliac crest followed by arthrodesis using a locking plate were p

Abstract Background To compare the functional and cosmetic outcome of pediculated versus free anterior and posterior lamella reconstruction after large eyelid defects due to malignancy excision. Patients and Methods A retrospective study over 2 years with 12 patients matching the criterion of pediculated versus non-pediculated transplants out of a cohort of 124 tumor excisions. The mean age was 76 ± 8 years of the 7 male and 5 female patients. In the majority of cases, more than half of the eyelid was excised. The main acquired causes of ectropion include involutional, cicatricial, paralytic, and mechanical. A severe manifestation of ectropion is tarsal ectropion, where much of the tarsal conjunctiva is visible, often with keratinization of the conjunctiva. causes. Outcome and correction of calcaneal collapse were assessed before and after surgery with clinical examination, visual analogue scores, and standard x-rays while weightbearing. Eleven of the 15 patients were satisfied with the procedure. There were four failures due to transverse tarsal joint arthritis, overcorrection, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Normal physiologic mechanisms of the upper eyelid are essential for preservation of the eye. Normal function and good cosmesis usually go hand in hand, but preservation of function is the more important of the two priorities. The general considerations in choosing a reconstruction technique include the restoration of: 1. A smooth conjunctival surface to line the eyelid and protect the cornea 2. Structural support of the tarsal plate 3. A smooth, nonabrasive lid margin 4. Normal vertical eyelid movement without ptosis or lagophthalmos 5. Normal horizontal tension with normal medial and lateral

Abstract Variation in body size has been widely studied by evolutionary biologists, in part because it is relatively easy to measure. In diverse animal taxa, especially those with indeterminate growth, an individual’s size is an overwhelming predictor of its social status, relative fecundity, or probability of survival. This is not necessarily so for adult birds. At certain ontogenetic stages, such as when nest-mates compete for food brought by parents, relative body size may be a life or death matter. As adults, however, phenotypic variation in body size is apparently usually unrelated to com

The lower eyelid, tethered medially and laterally by the canthal tendons, is normally suspended at the level of the inferior limbus with the aid of orbicularis tone counterbalanced by the force of the lower eyelid retractors and gravity. The lower eyelid is apposed to the globe because of the posterior position of the canthal tendon insertions relative to the projection of the globe. Disruption of the normal anatomic relationships from trauma or inflammatory disease or as a result of surgical resection of tumors can result in a poorly functioning lower eyelid with poor cosmesis.
