This paper reports a study of risk estimation for common consumer products. Subjects estimated injury frequencies and recalled/identified accident scenarios. While performance on the frequency estimation task highlighted a surprising ability to assess relative levels of risk very quickly, the scenario recall task showed severe errors in judgment. In the frequency estimation task, estimates that were made within 2 seconds of category presentation were just as accurate as those made after lengthy analysis. In the scenario recall task, subjects could recall or generate only about 40 percent of th

This paper describes an empirical study conducted to validate a computational model of dynamic task prioritization based on a framework proposed by Zhang and Feyen (2005). Three key factors in task prioritization were manipulated: processing time, available time, and task valence. Because earlier studies did not investigate how people prioritize tasks when valence and temporal characteristics conflict, this study examined how these conflicts are resolved. 20 subjects completed 54 time-limited task scenarios. Each scenario consisted of two or four concurrent tasks, each assigned a point value f

Many software systems fail as a direct consequence of errors in requirements analysis. Establishing formal metrics early in the design process, using attributes like critical parameters, enables designers to properly assess software success. For the design of interactive systems, the use of scenario-based approaches offers natural user centricity and facilitates knowledge reuse through the generation of claims. Unfortunately

Röschel, Lina, and Barbara Neumann. Summary report of workshop II on governance for ocean-based negative emissions technologies. OceanNets, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d2.4.

Abstract:
This deliverable provides a summary of a two-day expert workshop conducted in hybrid format. The workshop’s primary objective was aimed towards identifying future opportunities within the global ocean governance regime to strengthen governance of ocean-based NETs in a comprehensive manner. The workshop was organised by the Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (RIFS) as part of the work of Task 2.2 of the OceanNETs project. This deliverable follows a first online workshop (see Deliverable 2.3) that identified challenges within the current governance framework for oce

Abstract:
This report reviews in-use data recording practices and regulation for monitoring transport operational safety. It looks beyond just road vehicle in-use risk monitoring to also explore established regulation and approaches developed over time within; air, rail and marine vehicles. This wider basis of review seeks to identify potentially transferable good practice for application to Low Speed Automated Vehicle (LSAV) in-use monitoring. Across all approaches two core classes of in-use monitoring are detailed: lagging measures and leading measures. Lagging measures have higher accuracy focusing o

Abstract:
Research undertaken in Task 2.2 identified a range of governance challenges to ocean-based NETs related to the global ocean governance framework, e.g., linked to the transboundary nature of the ocean, potential effects of ocean-based NETs on the ocean’s condition and marine ecosystem services, as well as the many unknowns and uncertainties linked to NET-deployment. The fragmented approaches and frameworks in place to govern the global ocean further complicate comprehensive governance of these emerging technologies. This deliverable presents results from a workshop that explored how oceanbased

Full text
Abstract:
The primary means of corrosion control for buried pipelines is the use of an external pipeline coating and the application of cathodic protection (CP). Monitoring the effectiveness of the corro sion control system is critical to the safe operation of natural gas pipelines. NACE International has established criteria andrecommended practices for monitoring the effectiveness of CP systems (RPO169-96). These practices and criteria have generally been accepted by regulatory agencies. Over the years a significant amount of research has been performed that is related to monitoring practices. Much of

Abstract:
Seepage is a typical hydraulic factor that can initiate the breaching process in a levee system. If not identified and treated on time, seepages can be a severe problem for levees, weakening the levee structure and eventually leading to collapse. Therefore, it is essential always to be vigilant with regular monitoring procedures to identify seepages throughout these levee systems and perform adequate repairs to limit potential threats from unforeseen levee failures. This paper introduces a fully convolutional neural network to identify and segment seepage from the image in levee systems. To th

Abstract:
This dataset, resulting from Task 4.5 quantifies the potential of ocean-based negative emission technologies (NETs) using Earth System Models (ESMs). The dataset consists of simulations of ocean liming and direct CO2 removal from seawater. The ocean liming scenarios utilize excess CaO and cement production capacities from the EU, China, and the US, exploring their application for ocean alkalinization and gauging termination effects. Simulations ran from 2015-2100 using NorESM2-LM, EC-Earth3-CC, and AWI-CM models. This comprehensive dataset informs on the efficacy of ocean-based NETs and provid
