Abstract:
Abstract Interviewed an officer due to be transferred before the summer—outside in the sun. Took over an hour. Then I found [small unit prisoner] painting gnomes. He wanted to talk about a research project he had to do for his psychology degree. We talked about possibilities. For some reason, anger came up … and how it is managed very formally in this setting. He wanted to study it. That precipitated an hour-long outburst. I no longer had to ask questions. It was an assault by staff—five years earlier—his legs, the front of his shins, he was hit with a baton, kicked and bruised. He was unable to walk for 6 days. It left him feeling very confused (at one stage, suicidal).
