Abstract:

Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus, arbre endémique du Tassili n'Ajjer (Sahara Central, Algérie), est considéré comme un vestige, sans pouvoir régénérateur, d'une forêt plus étendue à l'Holocène et constituée sous un climat humide. Les investigations menées de 1997 à 2001 montrent qu'il existe 233 arbres vivants. Un taux de dépérissement de 8 % dû à la dégradation anthropique, a été enregistré au cours des 30 dernières années. La découverte de jeunes arbres atteste d'une régénération spontanée in situ. L'étude de l'accroissement radial montre une bonne vigueur juvénile, malgré les conditions hyperarides. L'analyse pédoanthracologique a montré que le pistachier de l'Atlas disparu actuellement et l'olivier de Laperrine constituaient des formations arborées communes au Tassili. L'activité touristique qui s'est développée à la faveur de la découverte des fresques préhistoriques constitue une nouvelle cause de dégradation de la végétation alors qu'il n'existe aucune mesure effective de protection<br>Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus is a native tree of the Tassili n'Ajjer (Central Sahara). This conifer was regarded as a remnant, now lacking any regenerative capacity, of a forest that grew in wetter times. Investigations carried out between 1997 and 2001 show that there are 233 alive trees. A disappearance rate of 8% over the last thirty years has been recorded. The discovery of some very young trees testifies to this cypress' capacity for regeneration in situ. Determination of radial growth reveals a juvenile vigour in spite of arid climatic conditions. Pedonthracological analysis reveals the presence of Pistacia atlantica Desf. , its disappearance from the Tassili must be attributed to human over-exploitation ; this pistachio, and Laperrine's olive, must have formed quite widespread groves in the Tassili. The tourism which developed since 1953 is a new source of degradation of the environment, because there is no real measure of protection

Abstract:

Spécifique des Tassili N'Ajjer et Acacus (Sahara central), généralement vu comme intercalé entre les périodes bubaline et bovidienne, l'art des têtes rondes a connu un regain d'intérêt récent de la part de divers auteurs, certains remettant en cause la totalité de la chronologie habituellement reconnue par l'art rupestre saharien. A partir d'un corpus de 1659 figures, une approche méthodologique fondée sur une typologie descriptive et l'usage de techniques statistiques aboutit à définir 5 phases successives au sein des têtes rondes et autorise à en envisager une sixième, plus ancienne. L'évolution de la faune permet d'établir que ces cinq phases recouvrent une séquence climatique interaride complète et, en corrélation avec des données paléoclimatiques et archéologiques disponibles, conduit à placer les têtes rondes avant le premier aride holocène. Des comparaisons avec d'autres phases rupestre mettent en évidence des éléments culturels communs avec le groupe bovidien dit Iherentahilahi, mais peu de relations avec les autres groupes bovidiens, l'art bubalin et l'univers des chasseurs défini par Leclan et Huard. L'analyse de l'évolution des éléments constitutifs de l'art des têtes rondes permet de constater que cette société est en cours de néolithisation et qu'elle manifeste des comportements intellectuels évolués, liés à la perception, non seulement d'un environnement naturel, social et mythique, mais aussi du temps : l'art des têtes rondes apparait comme une véritable narration de leur évolution telle qu'ils pouvaient eux-mêmes la concevoir.

Abstract:

La reproduction par apomixie paternelle a été mise en évidence chez une des espèces ligneuses les plus menacées du monde, le cyprès du Tassili (Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus, 233 individus dans l'aire naturelle), originaire du plateau du Tassili N'Ajjer en Algérie. Les descendances issues de graines de C. Dupreziana récoltées dans l'aire naturelle ou en collection dans le sud-est de la France ont été caractérisées pour leur morphologie, leur niveau de ploïdie, leur génotype microsatellite nucléaire, la production et la viabilité des cônes mâles, la croissance et la phyllotaxie. Environ 50% des descendants issus de pollinisation libre de C. Dupreziana ex-situ sont des cyprès du Tassili. Les autres descendants sont des cyprès verts, C. Sempervirens, soit haploïdes soit diploïdes, ces derniers étant le plus souvent homozygotes. Les individus haploïdes proviennent d'une androgenèse in planta à partir du pollen haploïde du cyprès vert. Ils se caractérisent par un allongement faible, des entre-nœuds très courts et un passage plus rapide de la phyllotaxie verticillée par 4 à celle verticillée par 3 et par 2. Les individus diploïdes homozygotes seraient issus d'une haplo-diploïdisation spontanée ou de la fusion de deux gamètes mâles. Leur déficit de vigueur est moins prononcé. Ces cyprès verts androgénétiques expriment aussi des anomalies de microsporogenèse et sont de bons candidats pour la sélection de variétés non pollinisantes. L'analyse de la diversité génétique chez C. Dupreziana met en évidence une très faible diversité entre arbres et une très forte hétérozygotie individuelle. Ce résultat inhabituel chez une espèce menacée est révélateur d'une reproduction par apomixie. Le cyprès du Tassili est une espèce en sursis<br>Paternal apomixis was demonstrated in one of the most endangered woody species in the world, Tassili cypress (Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus, 233 individuals in the natural area), which originates from Tassili N'Ajjer plateau in Algeria. Offspring produced by C. Dupreziana seeds harvested from the natural area or from collections in south eastern France were characterized by their morphology, their ploidy level, their nuclear microsatellite genotype, the production and viability of their male cones, their growth and phyllotaxy. Approximately 50% of progeny from ex-situ open-pollinated C. Dupreziana were Tassili cypress. The other half were common cypress (C. Sempervirens) seedlings, either haploid or diploid, the latter being most often homozygous. Haploid individuals were produced by in planta androgenesis from haploid pollen of common cypress. They were characterized by a weak elongation, very short internodes and an earlier switch from whorled phyllotaxy 4 to whorled phyllotaxy 3 and 2. The more vigorous diploid homozygous individuals probably derive either from a spontaneous haplo-diploidisation or from the fusion of two male gametes. These androgenic common cypress individuals also expressed microsporogenesis anomalies and are good candidates for the selection of pollen-free varieties. The genetic diversity analysis in C. Dupreziana showed a very weak diversity among trees and a very strong individual heterozygosity. This unusual result for an endangered species is indicative of reproduction by apomixis. Abstract:

Cette étude s'organise autour d'une réflexion sur l'occupation humaine de la Tassili du Fadnoun (sud-est algérien) à travers l'analyse architecturale des tumulus à couloir et enclos et de leurs contextes géographique et funéraire. La position géographique de ce grand massif, à proximité de Tanget, de la Tassedjebest, de la Tamelghiq et des autres massifs situés au sud-est, lui confère un rôle de carrefour où s'échangeaient les productions culturelles parmi lesquelles figurent l'art rupestre et l'architecture funéraire. Depuis la publication de Jean Pierre Savary qui date du début des années soixante, l'étude des monuments funéraires du Fadnoun n'a pas connu d'évolution importante. L'objectif majeur de notre recherche est de réexaminer les données anciennes concernant les tumulus à couloir et enclos et de donner une impulsion à de nouvelles recherches introduisant les systèmes d'information géographique (SIG) et l'imagerie satellitaire à une échelle et un contexte régional plus large. Le complément d’étude que nous apportons dans le cadre de cette thèse s'inscrit clairement dans la continuité des travaux antérieurs. Ces premiers résultats obtenus sont un point de départ pour des recherches ultérieures dans la Tassili du Fadnoun, restée longtemps marginalisée en raison des difficultés d'accès. Il ressort de cette étude, malgré une distribution géographique très étendue à l’échelle des massifs du Sahara centro-méridional que les monuments de type à couloir et enclos présentent plusieurs caractéristiques communes notamment en matière d'architecture, de mode d'inhumation et de datation<br>This study focuses the human occupation of the Tassili of Fadnoun (south-east Algeria) through the architectural analysis of the corridor and enclosures tumuli and their geographical and funerary contexts. The geographical position of this great massif, near Tanget, Tassedjebest, Tamelghiq and the other massifs situated in the south-east, gives it a role of crossroads where cultural productions including rock art and funerary architecture were exchanged. Since the publication of Jean Pierre Savary, which dates from the early sixties, the study of funerary monuments of the Fadnoun has not undergone significant evolution. The main objective of our research is to re-examine the old data concerning corridor and enclosure tumuli and to give impetus to new research introducing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imagery to a wider scale and regional context. The complementary study carried out in this thesis is clearly in line with the previous work. These initial results are a starting point for further research in the Tassili of Fadnoun, which has long been marginalized because of difficulties of access. This study shows that corridor and enclosure type monuments have several common characteristics, notably in architecture, burial mode and dating, in spite of a very wide geographical distribution all over of the central Saharan massifs

Le Tassili n’Ajjer est notre région d’étude, situé à l’extrême Sud - Est algérien, caractérisé par une remarquable interaction de l’homme et son environnement et comprenant des phénomènes naturels d’une beauté exceptionnelle et d’une culture saharienne spécifique. Ce dernier est ainsi mal organisé et insuffisamment protégé et géré. Notre étude s’articule ainsi autour de trois grands axes. Le premier axe est réservé à la présentation des spécificités et les particularités du territoire du Tassili n’Ajjer. Le second axe est consacré à l’analyse de toutes les composantes et les potentialités de cette zone d’étude et spécifiquement l’activité touristique à développer. Une série d’enquêtes et d’entretiens menés auprès des acteurs locaux (public et privé) portant sur les questions et les préoccupations de développement local dans la région du Tassili, nous ont aidé d’aboutir à une série de propositions permettant une meilleure gestion durable et une protection efficace de ces richesses spécifiques de la région. Ces propositions feront ainsi l’objet de détail dans le dernier axe de thèse<br>The objective of this thesis is to consider a strategy for sustainable management of natural resources and cultural resources in the territory of Tassili n'Ajjer. This makes the proposal and the incorporation of new activities to the fabric of society Saharan to achieve sound economic development and effective protection of this space. Tassili n'Ajjer our study area, located in the South - Eastern Algeria. It characterized by a remarkable interaction between man and his environment including natural phenomena of exceptional beauty and culture specific Saharan Africa. It is poorly organized and inadequately protected and managed. This contribution is organized around three major axes. The first line is reserved for the presentation of the specificities and particularities of the territory of Tassili n'Ajjer. The second axis is devoted to analyze the components and the potential of this specific study area and tourist activity to develop. A series of surveys and interviews with local actors (private and public) on the issues and concerns of local development in the region of Tassili helped us to achieve a series of suggestions for better Sustainable management and efficient protection of species richness in the region. Abstract:

Cette thèse a comme ambition d'expliquer les rapports complexes qui existent entre la valorisation touristique du patrimoine et le développement territorial et de déterminer les conditions dans lesquelles le tourisme peut être un vecteur de développement territorial dans deux régions en Algérie : l'une en Kabylie (Béjaïa) où le tourisme est peu développé malgré la présence d'un potentiel patrimonial important, l'autre, dans le Tassili n'Ajjer (Djanet) où le tourisme connaît un début de développement prometteur. Plus précisément, à travers l'articulation entre patrimoine, tourisme et développement territorial, nous avons étudié la question de savoir comment la valorisation touristique des ressources patrimoniales des régions de Béjaïa et de Djanet a été conçue et mise en œuvre et quelle dynamique territoriale en a découlé sur chacun de ces deux territoires. Les résultats de ce travail ont montré, dans le cas de Béjaïa, un processus de valorisation touristique du patrimoine qui a mobilisé des ressources génériques et limitées. Il préfigure une zone de développement touristique avec encore peu de rapports avec le territoire : valorisation de ressources génériques, un entrepreneuriat local certes porteur de projets, mais sans ressources spécifiques, mobilisation très limitée de la socioculturelle locale dans l'activité touristique... Dans le cas de Djanet, ce processus a permis la mise en œuvre à une échelle de moins en moins négligeable d'un développement territorial. Ce développement se manifeste à travers la mobilisation de ressources spécifiques et la création de ressources territoriales, l'affirmation de la population locale (Touaregs) en tant qu'acteurs du développement, la dynamique d'apprentissage locale, la régulation de l'activité touristique, les proximités géographique, organisationnelle et institutionnelle dont jouissent les entreprises touristiques locales, l'ouverture sur l'international...

Abstract:

En se basant sur le profil des figurations humaines et sur quelques présupposés particulièrement tenaces sur un monde des masques et un animisme considérés comme proprement noir-africains, nombre des auteurs ayant traité des images rupestres du Sahara central ont confondu «culture» et «identité raciale», canons artistiques et types anthropologiques, s'appliquant à écrire une Histoire culturelle hachée que rien ne justifie a priori. Ainsi, à Ozan Ehéré, de remarquables cas de rapports explicites illustrés par des scènes montrant un anthropomorphe touchant un zoomorphe invitent à suggérer un parallèle entre des figurations en style des Têtes Rondes et des images bovidiennes (styles de Séfar - Ozan Ehéré, d’Abañher, d’Iheren), alors que ces groupes sont généralement tenus pour indépendants l’un de l’autre et cloisonnés par souci typologique. Une première approche structurale de l’art rupestre de la zone permet aussi d’ouvrir quelques pistes stimulantes quant à la nature des êtres représentés sur les parois (qui ne sont peut-être pas des humains et des animaux ordinaires vaquant à quelque occupation banale), et conduit à s’interroger sur la fonction de ces images. À la lumière de leur possible dimension féminine, quelques peintures en style des Têtes Rondes pourraient sortir du dossier des représentations énigmatiques et l’on pourrait également — sans recours à des lectures littérales — faire quelque peu quitter aux images bovidiennes le monde de la peinture décorative et celui de la chronique historiée<br>Considering the face of human representations and evoking particularly firm presuppositions on a world of masks and animism considered as strictly black - African, number of the authors who studied the rupestral images of central Sahara mixed up "culture" and " racial identity ", artistic canons and anthropological kind, establishing a chopped cultural History, which is not argued. In Ozan Ehéré, remarkable cases of relationships illustrated by scenes showing an anthropomorphic touching a zoomorphic invite to suggest a parallel between representations in style of the Round Heads and the bovidians images (styles of Séfar - Ozan Ehéré, of Abañher, Iheren), while these groups are considered generally independent one of the other one and divided up by typological concern. A first structural approach of the rock art of the zone finally allows us to open stimulating ways, for example about the nature of beings represented on walls (who may not be human beings and ordinary animals attending to some commonplace occupation), and drives us to wonder about the function of these images. According to their possible feminine dimension, some Round Heads paintings could be taken out from the file of enigmatic representations. We could also get bovidians images out from the world of ornamental paintings, or of the chronicle - without appeal to literal readings

Abstract:

A b s t r a c t In this study, the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions by tassel powder was studied and optimised. Batch experimentswere conducted on simulated solutions using tassel powder adsorbent and the effects of contact time, pH and concentration on the extent of Pb (II) removalwas studied. Equilibrium and kinetic models for Pb(II) sorption were developed by considering the effect of contact time and concentration at optimum pH 4 and fixed temperature(25 ◦C). The Freundlich model was found to describe the sorption energetics of Pb(II) on tassel more fully than the Langmuir. A maximum Pb(II) loading capacity of 333.3 mg/g on tassel was obtained. The adsorption process could be well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with R2 values of 0.957 and 0.972, respectively. The kinetic parameters were obtained by fitting data fromthe effect of contact time on adsorption capacity into the pseudo-first, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion equations. The kinetics of Pb(II) on tassel surface was well defined using linearity coefficients (R2) by pseudo-second-order (0.999), followed by pseudo-firstorder (0.795) and lastly intra-particle diffusion (0.6056), respectively. The developed method was then applied to environmental samples taken fromborehole waters contaminated with mine wastewater. The removal of Pb (ND-100%), Se (100%), Sr (5.41–59.0%),U(100%) and V (46.1–100%)was attained using tassel. The uptake of the metals from environmental samples was dependent on pH, ionic strength and levels of other competing species.

La thèse est centrée sur l'édition critique des apostilles inédites de Tassoni au Roland Furieux, et sur l’évolution de son interprétation du poème de l’Arioste à partir des apostilles de jeunesse jusqu'à la Secchia rapita (le Seau Enlevé). Le premier chapitre est consacré aux apostilles de Tassoni : on considère tous ses textes annotés (15 dont il est certainement l’auteur), avec un bref résumé du débat critique sous-jacent à chacun de ces textes, s’il est présent. Ensuite, sont soulignés les aspects communs à toutes les apostilles de Tassoni, dont l’importance n’est pas marginale car elles ont été écrit par une personnalité de premier plan dans le panorama culturel italien du début du XVIIème siècle. La dernière partie du chapitre met les apostilles en relation avec les autres œuvres du Tassoni, où l’élément fragmentaire, celui du texte inachevé et non définitif, est toujours présent. Le deuxième chapitre est centré sur les apostilles au Roland Furieux, dont on fournit l’édition critique en appendice. Les apostilles, dont la longueur est variable, sont environ 2600 et incluent des observations sur tout le poème. Elles critiquent tout ce que Tassoni, d’après Castelvetro, considère contraire aux rigoureuses catégories d’Aristote et du Tasse. Après une brève introduction, le chapitre analyse les apostilles – divisées selon leurs caractéristiques formelles et narratives (action et personnages) –, avec une attention particulière pour les annotations qui soulignent les inventions bizarres, et plus en général pour les aspects les plus spécifiques des apostilles et de leur auteur. Dans le troisième chapitre, on analyse le rapport entre la vision du Roland Furieux qui résulte des apostilles et celle qui est présente dans les œuvres de la maturité, en essayant de reconstruire l’idée de l’épique et en particulier du poème de l’Arioste, et son évolution dans la pensée de Alessandro Tassoni<br>My PhD thesis is about the critical edition of the inedited annotations by Tassoni to the Orlando Furioso, and the way his interpretation of Ariosto’s epic poem changes from the annotations written during his youth till The Rape of the Bucket. The first chapter is about Tassoni’s annotations : we consider all his noted texts (15 of which we can say for sure that are by him), with a short summary of the critic debate regarding each one of these texts, if it is present. Then, we underline the aspects that are common to all Tassoni’s annotations, whose importance is not secondary since they have been written by a personality of the Italian cultural scene of the early XVII century. The last part of the chapter compares the annotations with other works by Tassoni, where the fragment can always be found as a stylistic element. The second chapter is about the annotations to the Orlando Furioso, whose critical edition is in the appendix of the thesis. The annotations are about 2600, of different lengths, and they include comments about all the epic poem. They attack all that according to Tassoni (following Castelvetro) breaks the categories of Aristotle and Tasso. After a short introduction, the chapter analyses the annotations – classified based on their formal and narrative features (such as action and characters) –, with a particular attention to the annotations that underline the strange inventions and more generally for the more specific aspects of the annotations and of their author.In the third chapter, we analyze the relation between the vision of the Orlando Furioso that can be gathered from the annotations and the one that characterizes the works of Tassoni’s maturity, trying to reconstruct the idea of epic and specially of Ariosto’s epic poem, and its evolution in Alessandro Tassoni’s thought

Abstract:

Cryopreservation has been extensively used in human reproductive medicine, aquaculture and conservation programs for endangered species. Many studies have been devoted to the mechanisms of cryodamage. However, in spite of growing successes of cryopreservation, post-thaw recovery of reproductive and embryonic cells often remains poor. It is known that cryopreservation causes extensive damage to membrane, results in decreased metabolism of cells, and disturbs the bioenergetical processes of cells by damage to mitochondria. Nonetheless, it has not yet been identified clearly if cryopreservation causes some disruption in the genetic integrity of reproductive cells and the safety of this approach still needs to be confirmed. The present study was undertaken on the spermatozoa of weather loach (Misgurnus tassilis) and blastomeres cells of zebrafish (Danio rerio). It was shown that survival was decreased for embryos derived from sperm after cryoprotectant treatment or cryopreservation. Some evidence has emerged that this decrease is more likely to reflect some genetic instability caused by cryopreservation of sperm. The present study showed for the first time that the DNA repair system of oocytes was activated after fertilisation with cryopreserved sperm. The effect of DNA repair system was also studied. It was found that incubation of fertilised eggs in caffeine could reverse the detrimental effects of cryopreservation of loach sperm on subsequent embryo development. On the other hand incubation of fertilised eggs with 3-aminobenzamide - inhibitor of the poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)- brought further decrease in the survival of embryos derived from cryopreserved sperm. The effect of individual donors of sperm and eggs on overall embryo survival was also studied and these investigations revealed significant differences between different donors. Effect of cryopreservation on zebrafish blastomeres was studied at the DNA molecular level. Mitochondrial DNA was sequenced after cryopreservation and increased level of frequency of the mutation was observed. This finding showed that cryopreservation might potentially increase the instability of mtDNA genome. The significance of these changes on the subsequent function of the cells is to be elucidated. Meanwhile this study suggests that it is important to be cautious in making judgements on the safety of cryopreservation techniques in reproduction.

Abstract:

Problem statement: Major adsorbent materials used in heavy metal ion removal from polluted aqueous streams are expensive and difficult to regenerate. In this study, the possibility of using Zea mays tassel, as an alternative low cost biosorbent material to remediate heavy metal pollution was investigated. Lead (II) was used because of its wide application in industrial products and well documented toxicity. Approach: Tassel was obtained from mature Zea mays cultivar R52 hybrid plants. The tassel was milled to a powder and was used to adsorb lead(II) ions from simulated solutions in batch experiments. The desorption of lead(II) was carried out using nitric acid and sodium citrate solutions. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, EDX and ESCA before and after application of lead(II) solutions. Results: For samples with concentrations of 100 mg L-1 Pb(II), 94- 98% was adsorbed and 57-74 and 57-67% recoveries were achieved with 0.5-5 M nitric acid and 0.01- 0.2 M sodium citrate as the stripping solutions, respectively. EDX spectrum of pure tassel indicated that group 1 and 2 metals were the major exchangeable ions present on its surface. ESCA analysis picked up small amounts of lead(II) in the form of Pb(OH)+ and Pb(NH)+ ions on the surface of tassel adsorbent exposed to Pb2+ ions and none on pure tassel sample. Functional groups such as -H, -NH2, - C = O and -COOH which are polar and are legends which are capable of binding heavy metals were identified by FTIR. Conclusion: The potential of Zea mays tassel to adsorb and recover heavy metals from aqueous solution was successfully demonstrated with Pb(II) sample solutions. The results obtained thus far demonstrated the possibility of using tassel powder in the removal as well as recovery of metals from aqueous solutions.

Baby corn (Zea mays L.) consists of unfertilized young ears harvested at silkemergence. The 2011 study was a culmination of four successive years of productionand evaluation of baby corn at Western Kentucky University (36.93 N, 86.47 W). Theobjective was to compare the effect of tassel removal on baby corn (BC) production onfour cultivars of corn, two field (‘N77P-3000GT’, ‘N68B-3000GT’) and two sweet(‘Silver Queen’, ‘Peaches N Cream’). Results indicated that tassel removal gavesignificant increases (P<0.01) of BC ears across harvests (H) and cultivars; however, the effect was not consistent over treatments. For harvests, the difference due to detasseling was significant (P<0.05) for H2 and H3, but not significant (P>0.05) for H1 or H4. For cultivars, numerical values were higher for detasseled than non-detasseled treatments in the first three harvests for each cultivar, but significant (P<0.05) only for ‘Peaches n’ Cream’. Quality of BC from both tassel treatments decreased in H3 and H4. Based upon the increased number of ears resulting from detasseling, additional labor costs would be more than covered. Baby corn has excellent potential as a niche crop for producers and consumers in Central Kentucky.
