Abstract:
The typical North American curriculum of a lesser-taught Slavic language implicitly relies on the legacy of Johann Gottfried von Herder’s interpretation that language in and of itself contains national (ethnic) culture. At the same time, enrolments are dwindling even in courses in the most commonly taught Slavic languages. Millennials’ understandable focus on the practicality of the courses they take make it unlikely for the lesser-taught languages to survive the slump. On the other hand, foreign culture courses are appearing to hold their ground more successfully. Slavic departments may reconsider Herder’s dictum as they try to maintain or establish programs in lesser-taught languages and cultures.

Abstract:
Is entrepreneurship an innate ability or an acquired skill? Can entrepreneurial acumen be achieved and enhanced through education and training, or are certain people “born” to be entrepreneurs or to act entrepreneurially? Economists and management theorists give widely divergent answers to these questions. This paper reviews the major approaches to teaching entrepreneurship, primarily at the undergraduate level, and relates them to economic theories of entrepreneurship. Surprisingly, we find little connection between the leading approaches to entrepreneurship education and economists' understanding of the entrepreneurial function. We assess likely explanations for the lack of contact between these two groups of scholars and suggest possible improvements.

Abstract:
Recognizing the importance of a vibrant entrepreneurial culture in the transition from an industrial to an information society, this paper addresses the question of whether entrepreneurship can be taught. A Japanese analysis, which links the ‘near-entrepreneurial experience’ – carefully targeted practical experience for students – to business birth rate, is presented as a positive indicator: by including the near-entrepreneurial experience in entrepreneurial training programmes, the business birth rate can be increased. This points towards the potential for well designed entrepreneurial education and training to achieve a higher impact than has often been assumed. As a specific example, Danish entrepreneurial culture, currently in a state of crisis, is discussed in the context of a particular approach adopted in North Zealand to revitalize the entrepreneurial spirit and direct it towards business start-up.

Abstract:
Preaching—defined as sermon writing, exegesis, or discursive skill—appears to be teachable. On the other hand, is preaching, defined as announcing the gospel, hence the mysteries of God and God's redemptive work, teachable? Preaching the gospel embodies and, at the same time, transforms the three primary features of aesthetic art: creativity, emotional world-engagement, and imagination. If these artistic features are gifts prior to any teaching, then we may doubt that pedagogy can facilitate preaching the gospel. At the same time, however, teachers of preaching can identify students' artistic powers, stir them up, and expose alien paradigms and rhetorics that divert preaching from the gospel, redirecting them toward those that embody the gospel's true aims. In this sense, preaching can be taught.

Abstract:
In recent years, colleges and universities have begun investing significant resources into an innovative pedagogy known as experiential philanthropy. The pedagogy is considered to be a form of service-learning. It is defined as a learning approach that provides students with opportunities to study social problems and nonprofit organizations and then make decisions about investing funds in them. Experiential philanthropy is intended to integrate academic learning with community engagement by teaching students not only about the practice of philanthropy but also how to evaluate philanthropic responses to social issues. Despite this intent, there has been scant evidence demonstrating that this type of pedagogic instruction has quantifiable impacts on students’ learning or their personal development. Therefore, this study explores learning and development outcomes associated with experiential philanthropy and examines the efficacy of experiential philanthropy as a pedagogic strategy within higher education. Essentially, we seek to answer the question, Can philanthropy be taught?
