Abstract:
This thesis examines clinical characteristics, molecular genetic aspects and electrophysiological features of two muscle channelopathies - myotonia congenita (MC) and Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS). MC is a muscle stiffness disorder caused by mutations in the skeletal muscle chloride channel gene CLCN1. A detailed genotype-phenotype analysis was undertaken in an initial MC cohort (22 families). A screening strategy for genetic testing was developed and applied to a larger cohort (303 cases). Twenty-three novel mutations and a high proportion of dominant MC predominantly due to four novel mutati

Abstract:
The primary objective of this dissertation is to provide a syntactic analysis of morphology in Estate Tamil, a dialect of Tamil spoken in tea estates, particularly in the Haputale area, in Sri Lanka. Tamil is significant for the theory of morphology not only because it is rich in a number of inflectional and derivational suffixes, but also because it exemplifies the co-occurrence of these two types of suffixes in the same lexical element, e.g. in participial and gerundive nouns. Further, these nouns have verbal morphology inside the nominal suffixes. Thus, the data from Tamil challenge the hyp

We have used Cassini measurements of electron density from Saturn's magnetosphere to search for a plasma tail behind the moon Titan. Such a plasma tail would consist of plasma that manage to escape Titan's gravitational pull and leave Titan's ionosphere to contribute to the plasma distribution in the Saturn system. The Cassini spacecraft was in orbit around Saturn for 13 years and performed 127 close flybys of Titan as well as many passes through Titan's orbit within the planets plasma-filled magnetosphere. We have used measurements of electron density from the Langmuir probe instrument, built

Abstract:
Chapter One examines the endangered vestiges of the Mamluk period in the old city of Damascus, focusing on the case of the al-Aglani and al-Tawil houses. Imane Fayyad richly illustrates and analyses this domestic architecture, including its building materials, spatial organisation and associated lifestyles. These Mamluk mansions represent a valuable yet little-known heritage of Damascus that should be preserved for present and future generations due to their historic, architectural and ornamental significance.

Abstract:
This study focuses on disaster impacts and recovery in Tamil Nadu, drawing on insights from Chennai city and Nagapattinam district. The research is part of a larger three-year project called “Recovery with Dignity”, which examines the experiences of recovery in post-disaster situations across three states in India – Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala – and explores how recovery processes represent vulnerable populations. In this report, we focus on three key disasters in Tamil Nadu: the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the 2015 South India flood, and the 2018 Cyclone Gaja. Through these events, we exami

This case study focuses on gender guidance clinics (GGCs) in Tamil Nadu, India, which provide services to the trans community within public hospitals. The programme was selected as a promising practice because it addresses the health needs of the LGBTQ+ community in India, a group that is largely marginalised and stigmatised. This programme stood out because of its significant government ownership and unique approach in addressing the healthcare needs of gender and sexual minorities.
