Abstract:
Beetles (Insecta, Coleoptera) contribute the most to global species richness of multicellular organisms with approximately one-fourth of all described species, the highest proportion of which can be found in tropical regions where many remain to be discovered and described. However, biodiversity in tropical regions is threatened by land use change and conversion of forests for agriculture, pasture and other uses. In this thesis I focus on tropical beetles as their ecological diversity, high richness and abundance, makes them suitable for a variety of studies that can add to our understanding

Abstract:
The taxonomic status of the 25 nominal species of the Indo-Pacific flatfish genus Zebrias (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae) was revised based on a morphological study of 531 specimens, including 36 type specimens. Two distinct, monophyletic groups were identified differing in the confluence and attachment of the caudal fin to adjacent dorsal and anal fins. Species most closely associated to the type species Pleuronectes zebra were included in the genus Zebrias while the remaining species were assigned to the genus Pseudaesopia to accommodate Zebrias species having a shallowly confluent caudal fin

This work presents an unsupervised method for tagging banking consumers’ transactions using automatically constructed and expanded topic taxonomies. Initially, we enrich the bank transactions via web scraping to collect relevant descriptions, which are then preprocessed using NLP techniques to generate candidate terms. Topic taxonomies are created using instruction-based fine-tuned LLMs (Large Language Models). To expand existing taxonomies with new terms, we use zero-shot prompting to determine where to add new nodes. The resulting taxonomies are used to assign descriptive tags that character

Network representation learning aims at transferring node proximity in networks into distributed vectors, which can be leveraged in various downstream applications. Recent research has shown that nodes in a network can often be organized in latent hierarchical structures, but without a particular underlying taxonomy, the learned node embedding is less useful nor interpretable. In this work, we aim to improve network embedding by modeling the conditional node proximity in networks indicated by node labels residing in real taxonomies. Iterative layering and protection of pre-defined nodes allow to extract semantically coherent DAG structures from noisy or over-ambiguous cyclic graphs, without loss of information a

The use of microbial preparations contributed to a change in the taxonomic structure of winter wheat rhizosphere microbiome was established. A more significant effect of microbial preparations was noted under no-till technology on the structure of the microbiome than with the traditional farming system.

Abstract:
This note brings together lessons from the IDBs and other institutions efforts to adapt a skills taxonomy for Latin America and the Caribbean countries. These efforts have focused primarily on the ability to gather and make use of labor market information on skills demand from non-traditional data sources like online job vacancies. Most of these efforts have used the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) taxonomy to underpin the identification and classification of skills. This note is intended to be a starting point and set of considerations for policymakers who

The following taxonomic key to the species of Lasioglossum Curtis, 1833 subgenera Lasioglossum and Leuchalictus Warncke, 1975 is adapted from McGinley (1986). This key is limited to those species known or expected to occur in Oregon based on McGinley (1986), and subsequent collection efforts in the Pacific Northwest by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Engler, et al 2018a-h; Engler and Stockenberg 2024a-g, Ikerd and Engler 2021) and the Master Melittologist Oregon Bee Atlas (Best et al 2021, 2022), as well as unpublished specimen records totaling 5,190 specimens. Abstract:
Detailed description of the 3rd instar larva and pupa of Phyllognathus dionysius is described along with notes on biology and distribution. Some beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae are economically important as crop pests. Grubs of P. dionysius are coprophagus and polyphagous and known to feed on roots of jowar (Sorguhm bicolor), bajra (Pennisetum glaucum), maize (Zea mays), turmeric (Curcuma longa), sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and paddy (Oryza sativa) while adults are nocturnal in habit and feed on foliage of Ficus sp. For this study, grubs of P. dionysius were collected from t

Healthy and resilient ecosystems underpin our societies and economies. Collapse of just a few ecosystem services such pollination, timber from forests and food from marine fisheries, could result in a global GDP decline of USD 2.7 trillion annually by 2030. We are not investing sufficiently in nature, resulting in an estimated nature funding gap as high as US$800 billion per year. Redirecting financial flows towards nature-positive investments and activities is critical. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) play an instrumental role to support a nature-positive future, aligned with the forthc

Description: Shipping is responsible for a range of different pressures affecting air quality, climate, and the marine environment. Most social and economic analyses of shipping have focused on air pollution assessment and how shipping may impact climate change and human health. This risks that policies may be biased towards air pollution and climate change, whilst impacts on the marine environment are not as well known. One example is the sulfur regulation introduced in January 2020, which requires shipowners to use a compliant fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% (0.1% in SECA regions) or use
