Abstract:
Terry Erwin’s race to document arthropod diversity inspired taxonomists, systematists, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and the conservation community at large, as his curatorial work of more than 50 years at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and prolific publication record attests. The biography compiles public records, publications, as well as personal memoirs to describe the context in which Erwin’s studies with carabid beetles evolved as formalization of concepts, such as biological diversity, megadiverse countries, biodiversity loss, and conservation biology, will b

A biography of A.V. Martynov, a famous Russian trichopterologist and insect morphologist, taxonomist, paleontologist, and phylogeneticist is briefly outlined and illustrated by photographs never published before. An important input into insect faunistics, ecology and biogeography, as well as into taxonomy and faunistics of freshwater Crustacea made by Martynov is acknowledged. A.V. Martynov founded and developed Russian trichopterology and promoted it at the world scale. An original system and phylogenetic scheme of the insects created by him is accepted worldwide and continues to influence mo

The religious studies scholar Bruce Lincoln famously defined myth as “ideology in narrative form” that “naturalizes and legitimizes” social taxonomies. Over two decades, Father Sergii (Romanov), a convicted murderer who turned toreligion while in prison, has used myth to shape his public persona, legitimize his spiritual leadership, cultivate the loyalty of his followers, and articulate a vision of holy Russia that seeks to reconcile the Soviet and imperial pasts. Weaving his personal biography into a narrative of national redemption from the sin of regicide, he has helped construct and lead a

This special issue of ZooKeys celebrates the memory of Dr. Terry Lee Erwin (1940-2020), who was the founding Editor of this journal. Terry was also a preeminent systematist specializing in the beetle family Carabidae, as well as one of the world’s principal authorities on the biodiversity crisis, especially in relation to the canopy fauna of tropical forests. His contributions as a practicing scientist, an educator and a public advocate for insect natural history were enormous. His unexpected passing in May 2020 was a significant loss to students of the Carabidae and to the worldwide community

Abstract:
Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modern evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 1930s and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research
