Scaritinae are a subfamily of ground beetles (Carabidae), containing about 1900 species and 125 genera. They share a distinctive body shape linked to a burrowing lifestyle. The diversity of Scaritinae is concentrated in the tropics and warmer regions of the southern hemisphere, particularly Southern Africa, Madagascar and Australia. The evolutionary history (phylogeny) of scaritines is unknown, leading to conflicting classification schemes and uncertainty over the definition of genera, especially in one subgroup of scaritines, the tribe Scaritini. Abstract Species are the fundamental units of biological diversity, but their identification and delimitation is often difficult. The difficulties are pronounced in diverse taxa such as insects. DNA barcodes, short standardized segments of the genome, have recently become a popular tool for identifying specimens to species, and are increasingly used as one of the sources of information for species delimitation. In this thesis, I studied the utility of DNA barcodes in species identification and delimitation in beetles (Coleoptera). Beetles are one of the most diverse animal groups, with nearly

Flea beetles (Alticini) are a highly diversified group of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) with about 8 000 known species from about 560 genera distributed worldwide except Antarctica. The major life strategy of flea beetles is external feeding on vascular plants, similarly to other leaf beetles. However, studies published during last years revealed existence of numerous different flea beetle genera feeding on mosses. Moss-inhabiting flea beetles are usually highly specialized and share similar morphological characteristics, including flightlessness, compact body shape and modified antennae. Howev

Most Hydraenidae species usually live in a layer of nearly stationary waters, where they adhere to the submerged stones within the fastest regions of cold, clean and fastflowing perennial streams. At its inception, taxonomy simply provided guidelines for nomenclature. It has since developed into a science applied to problems relating to economics, conservation and even law. Taxonomy is arguably one of the most important pillars of the biological sciences, providing the framework from which all other studies are conducted. We expand this essential foundation by describing four new species of Trox in Chapter 2 of this dissertation - the first to be recorded in South Africa since Scholtz’s comprehensive revision of the family in 1980.
