Taxon sampling is explicitly examined using simulations and probability analyses. The simulations focus on the ability of two different sampling strategies to correctly reconstruct relationships among subgroups of taxa. One sampling strategy chooses taxa randomly, the other strategy chooses taxa to increase the phylogenetic dispersal of the taxa. Also considered is whether the inclusion of a single basal taxon will increase the frequency of correctly reconstructing the relationships among subgroups. Inclusion of the basal taxon is found to decrease success (correct subgroup relationships). The

Taxol (1) was first isolated from the bark of the Pacific yew about 35 years ago by Drs. Wall and Wani. Although its development as an anticancer agent was delayed by numerous reasons, including its scarcity and insolubility, the discovery of its tubulin-assembly activity and other factors motivated oncologists to overcome these problems. It has since become one of the most important current drugs for the treatment of several cancers, including breast and ovarian cancers. The evolutionary history of the South African papionins is a useful analog for the emergence of hominids in South Africa. However, the taxonomic relationships of the papionins are unclear. This study uses low-magnification stereomicroscopy to examine dental microwear and uses the microwear signals to explore the existing classification of these papionins. The results from the species and site level analyses are equivocal. However, the genera and time period results show clear evidence for a dietary change between the extinct and extant forms of Papio and Parapapio. This adds an additional tool

This thesis centres on the synthesis of taxol analogues via late-stage hydroxylation with P450 enzymes. To accomplish this, the taxane core, specifically taxa-4(5),11(12)-dien-2-one, was synthesised by classical synthetic methods, and subsequently oxidised using P450<sub>BM3</sub> mutants.
