Bangalore, Vijayakumar Pooja. "Piggybacking of UDP and TCP packets." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5161.

Full text
Abstract:
In this research, the concept of piggybacking has been extended to concatenate Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets. In any given network scenario, voice (UDP) is given priority over data (TCP) packet. During high traffic load, a UDP packet is processed at a higher priority, thus accumulating the TCP packets and leading to congestion and retransmission of TCP packets. Because it is challenging to integrate UDP and TCP packets an efficient queuing model has been proposed to concatenate the packets without causing a negative impact on UDP or voice traffic. In this paper, we propose the algorithm and model to concatenate UDP and TCP packets into a single packet and obtain better throughput for TCP traffic, efficient utilization of network bandwidth. The concatenation is performed based on parameters such as priority, destination and MTU size. The concept of discrete-time Markov chain has been leveraged to analyze the router utilization and efficiently handle the concatenated packets. The PCATTCP tool has been used to study the performances of UDP and TCP packets traversing a LAN between two end hosts. These values have been used for the simulation of the problem. Discrete Event Simulation has also been performed to determine the optimal values and associated system parameters.

Enterprise networks are traditionally mapped via layers two or three, providing a view of what devices are connected to different parts of the network infrastructure. A method was developed to map connections at layer four, providing a view of interconnected systems and services instead of network infrastructure. This data was graphed and displayed in a web application. The information proved beneficial in identifying connections between systems or imbalanced clusters when troubleshooting problems with enterprise applications.

Actually the Internet has become a network capable of interconnecting several types of users, objects, houses, buildings, industrial plants, automobiles, hospitals, schools, this paradigm is known as Internet of Things (IoC). Thus, the Internet has becoming a communication medium that hosts TCP/IP data flows and networked control systems (NCS) UDP flows used in several applications, such as, industrial automation, building automation, remote surgery , smart grid and Smart city. To study both types of flows in a concomitant approach, in this work, a modeling methodology was developed that supports modeling and simulation of communication network topologies along with their protocols and others algorithms using the UPPAAL, a software tool that admit modeling of physical and logical systems through timed automata and make simulations and statistical verifications. Thus, control systems over the Internet were modeled along with other generic flows on which we can observe and study how the communication network features affect control performance behavior for different simulation scenarios and with different AQM (Active Queue Management) techniques implemented in the routers. Then, in order to improve the tradeoff between TCP-throughput and ITAE (Integral Time-weighted Absolute Error) for the NCS that share de same network topology, we've developed a new AQM technique called ENCN (Explicit Non-Congestion Notification) whose performance was compared with TCP-Jersey, DCTCP and, E-DCTCP ECN based transport layer protocols, and with Drop Tail, RED, CoDel, and PIE schemes implemented joint with TCP-Reno protocol (all them modeled in UPPAAL). Simulations and statistical verifications show that the ENCN provides better throughput and fairness for TCP/IP flows, and ITAE for NCS UDP flow compared to other methodologies. However, the ENCN uses some technological resources (bits to notify non-congestion) that are not always available. In order to overcome this ENCN limitation we developed a methodology called ANCE (Acknowledge-Based Non- Congestion Estimation), which work like ENCN but making inferences about queue length instead to using explicit non-congestion notification coming from the routers, which makes this technique more feasible for implementation. Finally, in order to overcome some ANCE limitations we developed a new transport layer protocol called TCP-Puerto-Londero, which rather than using the RTT, makes an adaptive adjustment of the congestion window as a function of a relative delay in the forward path. Simulation results showed that TCP-Puerto- Londero provides performance comparable to ENCN, overcoming TCP-Jersey by 12.03 % and the E-DCTCP in 4.21 % in terms of throughput for TCP/IP flows and reducing the ITAE of the NCS UDP flow by 36.84 %, 36.68 % and 4.16 % in relation to the TCP-Jersey, E-DCTCP, and ENCN, respectively. This good performance of TCP-Puerto-Londero was also observed in the statistical verifications.

Abstract:

Distribution of information across IP based networks is today part of our everyday life. IP is the backbone of the Internet and most office networks. We use IP to access web pages, listen to radio, and to create computation clusters. All these examples use bandwidth, and bandwidth is a limited resource.

Many applications distribute the same information to multiple receivers, but in many cases the same information is sent to a single receiver at a time, thus multiple copies of the same information is sent, thus consuming bandwidth.

What if the information could be broadcasted to all the clients at the same time, similar to a television broadcast. TCP/IP provides some means to do that. For example UDP supports broadcasting; the problem faced when using UDP is that it’s not reliable. There is no guarantee that the information actually reaches the clients.

This Bachelor thesis in Computer Science aims to investigate the problems and solutions of how to achieve reliable distribution of fixed size data sets using a non reliable multicast communication channel, like UDP, in a LAN environment.

The thesis defines a protocol (Almost Reliable Multicast Protocol – Arm-P) that provides maximum scalability for delivery of versioned data sets that are designed to work in a LAN-environment. A proof-of-concept application is implemented for testing purposes.

Abstract:
Since 2012 Google has been developing a new transport protocol called QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections). The purpose of the QUIC-protocol is to speed up the web and first of all produce lower response time on websites. This is interesting in several perspectives. First of all, this is good news for the common user that browse the web but also in an economical perspective. Studies show that quicker response time on websites attracts customers both short term and long term which is important in areas as e-commerce. On top of this the Internet alone (home computers, data centers etc.) stands for about 10% of the worlds electricity consumption and a quicker and more effective transport protocol could contribute to lower this number since a lot of data is transferred through the Internet each day. QUIC is already in use by many of Google´s servers and can be used when browsing the web in a chrome or Opera browser. This means that many people have already been in touch with QUIC unknowingly. This degree project focuses on the main problems which makes the QUICprotocol needed and compares QUIC to TCP. TCP has been the dominating transport protocol regarding reliable data transmission for decades and still is. In this project an environment for testing is implemented which makes it possible to compare response time for websites. Two different tests are made where different common internet conditions are simulated to see how these conditions effects the response time for each protocol. The tests have shown that QUIC and TCP are pretty much equal regarding response time when the delay is 100 ms or less and there is no packet loss. When the delay exceeds 100 ms have our tests shown that QUIC delivers quicker response times. The tests have also shown that QUIC is superior to TCP when data is transferred over a connection with packet losses. Although it can be questioned if we could have optimized our TCP-server to compete with QUIC in a better way.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the current implementations for the distribution of real-time GNSS data over IP networks such as the public Internet, focusing on two essential components of the system, data format and transport protocol. The provision of a suitable data format will allow users to take full advantage of the real-time GNSS data distribution system. Types of GNSS supported, message sizes, data rates, data precision levels, hardware and software support and possible future developments are investigated. An analysis is carried out on commonly known GNSS data formats, highlighting the most suitable standard for each evaluation criterion. A similar investigation is carried out on the transport protocols. An analysis is conducted on various design aspects of NTRIP and RT-IGS protocols, covering factors such as data latency, integrity, firewalls and proxy server compatibility and scalability. The analysis also covers the design aspects of the new draft Version 2 of NTRIP. The latter parts of this thesis report on the experiment results aimed at providing assessment of the current level of implementation of NTRIP. Data latency and integrity using NTRIP over the Internet are examined. Their impacts on users applications as the quality of real-time kinematic positioning is assessed. The results show that the performance of the system satisfies the rigorous requirement of the end-user application. The draft version of the new NTRIP indicates that UDP will be also supported. A similar investigation is carried out, providing the first experiment results on the new option. Tests using similar metrics, data latency and integrity, were carried out to verify the inherent differences between TCP and UDP. It was ascertained that, in most cases, UDP does offer improvement in terms of reduced latency over TCP. However this improvement is not significant enough to affect the performance of users applications tested. Compatibility tests were also carried out and the test results show that the new option experiences some compatibility issues with firewalls and wireless networks.

Abstract:
The Range Commanders Council has been attempting to standardize Telemetry over IP (TMoIP) for many years now. While the attempt has been valiant, the outcome to date has not been very successful. As a result, many vendors have implemented their own proprietary methods for sending PCM data over IP networks resulting in a lack of interoperability. As telemetry ground stations are finally making the move toward network centric architectures, it is worth considering the lessons learned over the previous 10 years of designing, installing, troubleshooting and optimizing telemetry data distribution over IP networks. This paper describes a proposed revision to IRIG 218 based on these real life experiences. It discusses the critical decisions and architectural decisions to be made and some of the pitfalls to be avoid.

This paper is intended to provide background into networking and IP protocols for non-IT personnel. It is not a study of networking and related protocols, as each of these topics would require a much longer period of time to explain. Addressed are considerations that should be required prior to locking a network design into a specific architecture. The systems available today, for the same cost as a good home PC, are becoming capable of performing critical tasks. It is highly recommended that the personnel who know the most about the data and how it will be used communicate with the personnel that know the network. Failing to explain or understand the networking nomenclature causes considerable wasted time and money. This paper is intended to encourage communications between the data creators and the data movers. We also want to demonstrate how new systems, hardware and software, designed to work with existing network devices used in non–telemetry applications, can make implementing IP in telemetry networks easier.

The telemetry industry anticipates the tremendous potential value of adding full networking capability to telemetry systems. However, much of this potential can be realized while working with legacy equipment. By adding modules that interface transparently to existing equipment, continuous telemetry data can be encapsulated in discrete packets for over the air transmission. Packet fields can include header, sequence number and bytes for error detection and correction. The RF packet is transmitted without gaps through a standard serial interface and rate adjusted for the packet overhead – effectively making packetization transparent to a legacy system. The receiver unit performs packet synchronization, error correction, extraction of stream quality metrics and re-encapsulation of the payload data into an internet protocol (IP) packet. These standard packets can then be sent over the existing network transport system to the range control center. At the range control center, the extracted stream quality metrics are used to select the best telemetry source in real-time. This paper provides a general discussion of the path to a fully realized, packet-based telemetry network and a brief but comprehensive overview of the Hypernet system architecture as a case study.

The semestral thesis describes ECG signal compression methods designed to modify the data for transmission via communication channels. The thesis contains an introduction to Ethernet and explanation of communication in the network. The transport protocols TCP and UDP are discussed in more detail. In the practical part of the thesis was created two separate applications. The first application in the sender's computer opens a text file with the ECG signal. Loaded ECG signal is filtered by cascade of filters to eliminate interference. The resulting signal is displayed. A part of the application is the R wave detection, calculating the length of RR interval and heart rate. The application also allows to compress an ECG signal. ECG signal is sent via Ethernet network via UDP protocol for individual samples. Applications in the recipient's computer receives signal samples from the network. Recieved compressed data is reconstructed. The resulting ECG signal is displayed and there are again detected R waves, the length of RR intervals and sampling frequency are calculated.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are designed to use the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to establish secure communication tunnels over public Internet. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) extends TCP to allow data to be delivered over multiple network paths simultaneously. This thesis first builds a testbed and investigates the potential of using MPTCP tunnels to increase the goodput of VPN communications and support seamless mobility. Based on the empirical results and an analysis of the MPTCP design in Linux kernels, we further introduce a full-multipath kernel, implementing a basic Multipath UDP (MPUDP) protocol into an existing Linux MPTCP kernel. We demonstrate the MPUDP protocol provides performance improvements over single path UDP tunnels and in some cases MPTCP tunnels. The MPUDP kernel should be further developed to include more efficient scheduling algorithms and path managers to allow better performance and mobility benefits seen with MPTCP.

With the emergence of higher bandwidth Ethernet networks on ranges, many ranges are converting their data transport from ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks to Ethernet networks. Both networks have their respective advantages and disadvantages, however one reoccurring issue is product interoperability. The RCC (Range Commanders Council) TTG (Telecommunications and Timing Group) created the Telemetry over IP (TMoIP 218-07) solution with input from various ranges and vendors to solve this issue. This specification allows ranges to use different vendors together for Telemetry over Ethernet, based on specific needs at each site. This paper targets those who are thinking about converting from ATM to Ethernet networks.

To detect network changes and network troubles, Transpondertech needs a tool that can make network measurements.

The purpose of this thesis has been to find measurable network properties that best reflect the status of a network, to find methods to measure these proerties and to implement these methods in one single tool. The resulting tool is called NetworkPerf and can measure the following network properties: availability, round-trip delay, delay variation, number of hops, intermediate hosts, available bandwidth, available ports, and maximum allowed packet size. Together, these properties give a good picture of the status of a network connection.

The thesis also presents the methods used for meassuring these properties in the tool.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The current Internet infrastructure must be architected to handle future media-rich, and content rich applications. The success of applications such as video-on-demand, multicast and content distribution depends on Quality of Service and bandwidth guarantees. Over the years, the Internet has encompassed many changes in traffic profiles and applications, in bandwidths and utilization, but the future Internet infrastructure necessitates a very different architecture supporting Quality of Service (QoS). A satellite, distinguished by features such as global coverage, bandwidth flexibility, broadcast, multicast, and reliability, is an excellent candidate to provide broadband integrated Internet access. The aim of this thesis is to explore suitability of satellite technologies for broadband Internet services with significant emphasis on the question of defining, assessing, and developing QoS models for satellite ATM and IP broadband networks with and without onboard processing. For the satellite Internet, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) performance is degraded due to long propagation delays, link errors, and bandwidth asymmetry. In this thesis, for satellite ATM, fundamental questions such as buffer requirements, TCP/ATM efficiency, fairness, and multiple access are addressed through extensive simulations in a quantitative way. Buffer designs for TCP over satellite ATM Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service are performed. A buffer size equal to half the round trip delay-bandwidth product of the TCP connections provides high efficiency for TCP over satellite UBR. An extensive TCP analysis via simulation study for various TCP mechanisms and end system policies show that for satellite environment end system policies are more important than switch drop policies in terms of efficiency and fairness for World Wide Web traffic. A bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed and analytical model for supporting voice and video service over a broadband satellite network is developed. The study results demonstrate that non-contiguous allocation can afford higher gain in uplink utilizations. In this thesis, for the first time, Integrated Services and Differentiated Services based QoS architectures for broadband satellite IP networks are proposed and analyzed. In multimedia applications where User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is used along with TCP, a fair excess bandwidth allocation is not possible because TCP is congestion sensitive whereas UDP is congestion insensitive. An extensive simulation model is developed to study the effect of precedence levels for reserved rate utilization and fairness with different buffer management policies. The simulation results indicate that three levels of precedence are required for better utilization. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) over Satellite network has been proposed and a simulation model developed to study the throughput performance impacts for TCP and UDP. The traffic engineering of MPLS facilitates efficient and reliable network design to optimize the utilization of network resources and enhance the network QoS. A novel Code Division Multiple Access based Spread ALOHA single code multiple access scheme for broadband satellite return channel is proposed as an alternative to Multifrequency-Time Division Multiple Access based Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel via Satellite protocol. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that throughput for Spread ALOHA One Long Code equivalent to packet length, is better than Spread ALOHA One Code in which spreading sequence repeats every symbol. The reduction of throughput due to multi-user interference for different number of users is shown. Further research on QoS architectures, performance models for TCP enhancements, interworking functions, interoperability, and standardization efforts is included.

Abstract:
Network data rates are growing rapidly. The data rates provided to the customers by their network providers vary from Mbps to Gbps. However, rarely do users get the promised peak throughput. In cellular networks, network conditions change based on obstacles, weather conditions between the client and the base stations, and even the movement of objects and people. As a result of the changes in the radio link, the data transfer rate can change rapidly, hence devices needs to adjust their communications based on the currently available data rate. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is widely used for reliable data transfer over networks. However, TCP was initially designed when link data rates were much lower than the link data rates commonly available today. As a result, TCP does not perform well at high data rates, despite some of the changes that have been made to the protocol to support high data rate links. Moreover, TCP has problems adapting to large changes in link bandwidth (not caused by congestion), resulting in a lower average throughput than the link could potentially deliver. This thesis evaluates two different versions of the TCP protocol (e.g., TCP Reno and Cubic TCP) and proposes a network coding scheme to enhance users’ experience when communicating over unstable radio links. The performance of the two TCP protocols and Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) scheme were measured in an emulated network environment. The results of these measurements were analyzed and evaluated. The analysis shows that RLNC can provide a higher throughput than TCP over a network with high packet loss. However, RLNC is a UDP based solution and does not implement congestion control algorithms or reliability. A new solution is proposed that increases reliability and implements network adaptation in RLNC solutions. The results obtained in this thesis can be used to develop a new protocol to increases the quality of users’ experience in high loss networks.

Abstract:
This thesis project has studied a number of protocols that could be used to communicate between a vehicle and a remote server in the context of Scania’s connected services. While there are many factors that are of interest to Scania (such as response time, transmission speed, and amount of data overhead for each message), this thesis will evaluate each protocol in terms of how much data overhead is introduced and how packet loss affects this overhead. The thesis begins by giving an overview of how a number of alternative protocols work and what they offer with regards to Scania’s needs. Next these protocols are compared based on previous studies and each protocol’s specifications to determine which protocol would be the best choice for realizing Scania’s connected services. Finally, a test framework was set up using a virtual environment to simulate different networking conditions. Each of the candidate protocols were deployed in this environment and setup to send sample data. The behaviour of each protocol during these tests served as the basis for the analysis of all of these protocols. The thesis draws the conclusion that to reduce the data transmission overhead between vehicles and Scania’s servers the most suitable protocol is the UDP based MQTT SN.

Abstract:
Controlling systems with multiple robots is quickly becoming the next large hurdle that must be overcome for groups of robots to successfully function as a team. An agent oriented approach for this problem is presented in this thesis. By using an agent oriented method, the robots can act independently yet still work together. To be able to establish communities of robots, a basic agent oriented control system for each robot must first be implemented. This thesis introduces a novel method to create Physical Robot Agents, promoting a separation of cognitive and reactive behaviours into a two layer system. These layers are further abstracted into key subsections that are required for the Physical Robot Agents to function. To test this architecture, experiments are performed with physical robots to determine the feasibility of this approach.

A real-time implementation of a Physical Robot Agent would greatly expand its field of use. The speed of internal communication is analyzed to validate the application of this architecture to real-time tasks.

It is concluded that the Physical Robot Agents are well suited for multiple robot systems and that real-time applications are feasible.

Abstract:
Communication by wireless technologies has seen a tremendous growth in the last decades. Mobile phone technology and wireless broadband solutions are rapidly replacing the last-hop wireline connectivity for telephones and Internet access.  Research has, however, shown that Internet traffic can experience a performance degradation over wireless compared to wired networks.  The inherent properties of radio communication lead to a higher degree of unreliability, compared to communication by wire or fiber.  This can result in an increased amount of transmission errors, packet loss, delay and delay variations, which in turn affect the performance of the main Internet transport protocols TCP and UDP.  This dissertation examines the cross-layer relationship between wireless transmission and the resulting performance on the transport layer. To this end, experimental evaluations of TCP and UDP over a wireless 4G downlink system proposal are performed.  The experiment results show, in a holistic scenario, that link-level adaptive modulation, channel prediction, fast persistent link retransmissions, and channel scheduling, enables the transport protocols TCP and UDP to perform well and utilize the wireless link efficiently.  Further, a novel approach is proposed where a modified TCP receiver can choose to accept packets that are corrupted by bit errors. Results from network emulation experiments indicate that by accepting and acknowledging even small amounts of corrupted data, a much higher throughput can be maintained compared to standard TCP.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present a suitable way of calibrating and debugging an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The issues that occur when working with an AUV are the inconvenient way of having to constantly recompile the software to change the behavior of the AUV and the lack of feedbacksreceived. If the vehicle does not behave as it should the information needed to be able to trace and fix the problems that occur isin general difficult to retrieve. To tackle this problem a literature study was made on logging libraries, communication protocols as well as AUVs in general. This resulted in identifying a set of existing logging libraries and possible communication protocols. From testing and analyzing these results, Zlog was chosen as the logging library and UDP as the communication protocol. Zlog has then been used in the AUV application to log relevant information on the AUV and UDP allows establishing a connection between the AUV and a desktop program created for Windows to send this logging information to. The desktop program also allows filtering of any incoming logs with the use of a parser. This has been an essential part of the solution to be able to identify specific logging data and help presenting this in a convenient way. To be able to change the format of the log file, the parser has been given a grammar which can be adjusted to adapt to a different log file. Additionally, the desktop application has the ability to send commands to the AUVapplication via the UDP connection to change the behavior of the AUV live.

Abstract:
Wireless Mesh Networks provide an organisation or a community with the means to extend or create a network independent of infrastructure. However, the network’s dynamic topology along with the fact that devices in the network might be mobile and move randomly, brings tolight various kind of problems on the network, with the most common being the routing. In this report, the problem of routing is examined in terms of throughput, routing overhead, end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio on two chosen algorithms, namely the Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO) and the Better Approach To Mobile Adhoc Networking (B.A.T.M.A.N.). Furthermore, this thesis examines also a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection and compares it against several TCP congestion control mechanisms, two of which, were implemented, namely TCP-Illinois and TCP-FIT, to address the effects that different TCP congestion mechanisms have on an ad-hoc network, when reliable connections are needed. The results show that DYMO is more stable, performs good overall and has the lowest routing overhead, however in a situation with limited mobility or no mobility (as in high mobility they perform poorly) proactive protocols like B.A.T.M.A.N. are worthy protocols, should the extra penalty of routing overhead in the network traffic is not causing any problems. Furthermore, regarding the TCP results, it was observed that TCP congestion algorithms designed specifically for Wireless networks, do offer better performance and should be considered, when designing an ad-hoc network.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the security of tomorrow’s peer-to-peer real-time communication in heterogeneous networks. Because of the additional delay caused by inband handshake and the poor compatibilities of some transport protocols, it was determined that existing security protocols such as transport layer security (TLS) and datagram transport layer security (DTLS) are not suitable in such a user scenario and a new security protocol should be designed. This new security protocol is called transport encapsulation security payload (TESP). TESP not only has the advantage of low initialization delay, but also fully supports transport protocols including TCP, UDP, stream control transmission protocol (SCTP), and datagram congestion control protocol (DCCP). Also a security analysis of TESP was carried out and no security flaws were found.

ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
The Central Test and Evaluation Incentive Program, (CTEIP) is developing Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) to extend serial streaming telemetry (SST) with a command and control link. Command link interfaces link remote Advanced Range Telemetry (ARTM) transmitters (Tx) and receivers (Rx), developed under the ARTM CTEIP project, via graphical user interfaces (GUI). The communication channel links the iNET Tx on a vehicle network (vNET) and the iNET Rx on a ground station network (gNET) via a single GUI. The command link is an essential part of the pending iNET Technology Demonstration.
