Although collision free TDMA schemes have been proposed and used for more than two decades, an important ingredient of these schemes, the initialization of stations (that is, assigning ID numbers 1,2,...,N) was not investigated until recently. In this thesis, we propose several new randomized and deterministic initialization methods, and measure the performance of these new and some known methods. The main contributions of this thesis are new randomized hybrid algorithms for the cases of known and unknown number of users. Performance of these algorithms was evaluated by comparing it with impro

Wireless multi-hop ad hoc and sensor networks provide a promising solution to ensure ubiquitous connectivity for the Future Internet. Good network connectivity requires designing a reliable Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, which is a challenging task in the ad hoc and sensor environments. Clock synchronization in a wireless sensor network (WSN) is essential as it provides a consistent and a coherent time frame for all the nodes across the network. Typically, clock synchronization is achieved by message passing using carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) for media access. The nodes try to synchronize with each other, by sending synchronization request messages. If many nodes try to send messages simultaneously, contention-based schemes cannot efficiently avoid collisions which results in message losses and affects the synchronization accuracy. A base station broadcasts packets, which are first fountain encoded, downlink to all ad hoc nodes through multipoint relays. For simplicity, the relays transmit their packets according to the schedule of FH/TDMA. We assume two jamming cases which cause packet damaged. One is block jamming and the other is bit jamming. Besides the well-known flooding protocol and the optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol under block jamming, we propose

The design goal of SC-TDMA is to solve collision, overhearing, idle listening and control packet overhead problems which are the main sources of power consumption for sensors. It is assumed that the network consists of a sink node and N sensor nodes. The sink node starts the SC-TDMA protocol to construct a tree spanning all the sensor nodes. Each node cooperates with its neighbors to construct the tree. After a node joins the

To meet the anticipated demand for wireless access to the broadband Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network, the concept of wireless ATM has been proposed in 1994 [1]. One of the main challenge in the design of a wireless ATM network resides in the conception of a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol that will handle the different ATM services while providing an efficient utilization of the wireless channel. In this thesis, we propose a new Dynamic Reservation TDMA (DR-TDMA) MAC protocol for wireless ATM networks. DR-TDMA combines the advantage of distributed access and centralized con

Existing QoS routing solutions have addressed this problem by assuming a stronger multi-antenna model or a less stronger CDMA-over-TDMA channel model. This study attempts to build a new multicast tree structure, namely hexagonal tree, to serve as the QoS multicasting tree, where the MAC sub-layer is adopted the TDMA channel model.
