Olfos, Raimundo, and Masami Isoda. "Japanese Lesson Study for Introduction of Multiplication." In Teaching Multiplication with Lesson Study. Springer International Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_5.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractIn Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_2, we posed questions about the differences in several national curricula, and some of them were related to the definition of multiplication. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_3, several problematics for defining multiplication were discussed, particularly the unique Japanese definition of multiplication, which is called definition of multiplication by measurement. It can be seen as a kind of definition by a group of groups, if we limit it to whole numbers. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4, introduction of multiplication and its extensions in the Japanese curriculum terminology were illustrated to explain how this unique definition is related to further learning. Multiplicand and multiplier are necessary not only for understanding the meaning of multiplication but also for making sense the future learning. The curriculum sequence is established through the extension and integration process in relation to multiplication. In this chapter, two examples of lesson study illustrate how to introduce the definition of multiplication by measurement in a Japanese class. Additionally, how students develop and change their idea of units—that any number can be a unit in multiplication beyond just counting by one—is illustrated by a survey before and after the introduction of multiplication. After the illustration of the Japanese approach, its significance is discussed in comparison with the Chilean curriculum guidebook. Then, the conclusion illustrates the feature of the Japanese approach as being relatively sense making for students who learn mathematics by and for themselves by setting the unit for measurement (McCallum, W. (2018). Making sense of mathematics and making mathematics make sense. Proceedings of ICMI Study 24 School Mathematics Curriculum Reforms: challenges, changes and Opportunities (pp. 1–8). Tsukuba, Japan: University of Tsukuba.). A comparison with Chile is given in order to demonstrate the sense of it from the teacher’s side. In relation to lesson study, this is a good exemplar of how Japanese teachers develop mathematical thinking. It also illustrates the case for being able to see the situation based on the idea of multiplication (Isoda, M. and Katagiri, S. (2012). Mathematical thinking: How to develop it in the classroom. Singapore: World Scientific; Rasmussen and Isoda Research in Mathematics Education 21:43–59, 2019), as seen in Figs. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4#Fig2 and 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4#Fig3 in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4 of this book.

Abstract:
Generically, a digital textbook serves as a source of knowledge in a digital learning environment. It can be taken anytime and anywhere on almost any devices optimized for digital learning. Users of digital textbooks are teacher(s) and student(s), including life-long learners who use digital devices for learning. The recent challenges indicate that digital textbook use and development have become a hot area of cross-disciplinary research. The research problems arise, first of all, from controversies between traditional curricula and access to global content, that deals with the availability of more diverse forms of information, new technologies, interactive assessment and open source textbooks. However, the “digital textbook” concept does not yet have one established meaning. Rather, multiple partly consistent, partly contradictory definitions and usages exist. This chapter provides a framework for clarifying the confusing terminology of digital textbook initiatives. To arrive at this framework, the author explores the interdependences between textbook, digital (text) book and educational software concepts and proposes a synthetic definition.

This review of S. F. Bonner’s Education in Ancient Rome: From the Elder Cato to the Younger Pliny (1977) appeared two years later. Bonner was well known for his standard work Roman Declamation, published in 1949 but still very useful. The book under review is ‘bigger but equally authoritative’, and the review praises its lucidity, reticent humour, and intriguing illustrations. The book falls into three parts: the first a historical survey; the second (‘in some ways the most interesting and original’) a reconstruction of the conditions under which Roman teachers worked; and the third a detailed description of what the Roman schoolboy learned and how he learned it. The review singles out for more detailed discussion the use of imaginary laws in the declamation school.

The University of Patras' Library Services designed and offered to primary and secondary schools the pilot educational program “From the Ancient to the Modern Tablets”, featuring immersive multimedia learning experiences about the book history. The pilot program consisted of three stages: a playful library tour, followed by an interactive game-based digital storytelling activity with game elements, and a collaborative creative reflective hands-on activity. Utilizing the avatar psychology power, the visualization and simulation affordances of 3D immersive learning environments and the appeal of storytelling and game-based learning, the “gamified” blended narrative on the book evolution enabled learning as problem-focused, embedded and context-generated. An additional research study was conducted to investigate teachers opinions regarding the effectiveness of the 3D Virtual Immersive Environment(s); this focused on students' learning and thinking skills in the socio-cognitive, psychomotor and affective domain. This work exposes the pedagogical design, presents the socio-technical development and reflects on the initial research findings.

Teaching students how to use the technology is the first step to integrating the technology into instructional practice. This chapter shows how to teach students with a learning disability (LD) to use a web-based publishing tool using a simple strategy. The strategy is TAP(S)3. The strategy was developed on the principles of the self-regulated strategy development (SRSD) model and the strategic instruction model (SIM). SRSD and SIM principles are evidence-based and focus on helping the struggling student succeed academically. SRSD and SIM focus intensively on writing instruction. The web-based publishing tool used as an example in this chapter is Book-Builder. Book-Builder was developed by CAST on the principles of universal design for learning (UDL).
