Abstract:
Today, in a modern market economy, one of the main factors of production is the labor market. The labor market and its mechanisms regulate the levels of employment of the population, supply and demand for labor, the level of wages, and the characteristics of the distribution of labor. To study the labor market, it is necessary to collect statistical data and analyze them. Labor market statistics are an important component of socio-economic statistics. It is closely related to other sections of socio-economic statistics, such as population statistics, statistics of economic sectors, the system of national accounts, etc. The conclusions drawn from the statistical study of the labor market characterize the state and development of the economy and are necessary for making informed economic and social decisions. The main branch of law that regulates relations in the labor market is labor law. It is one of the leading, complex and most important branches of law in the Russian Federation. In the conditions of economic recession and pandemic, new problems of the labor market of the Russian Federation and its legal support have emerged. This monograph, dedicated to modern problems of the labor market, is the result of the joint work of teachers and students of the Department of Economic Security, Accounting and Law of the Don State Technical University.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter chronicles a wave of contentious teacher strikes in 1972-73 and shows that teacher unions’ collective bargaining efforts clashed with the limited budgets of many of the nation’s largest cities. This conflict led many residents of these metropolitan areas to argue that teachers were guilty of both facilitating fiscal crisis and setting poor examples for the young people they taught since dire conditions led many teachers to believe that striking was necessary even though they broke the law in the process. The chapter documents a strike that shut down Philadelphia for three months in 1972-73; turns to Chicago and St. Louis, where teachers were on strike simultaneously; and concludes by examining the lengthy teacher strike in Detroit in the fall of 1973.

Abstract:
This chapter documents the nation’s longest and most contentious teacher strike in the immediate wake of the New York City fiscal crisis of 1975, after which New York and many other cities were forced on the path of municipal austerity. In December, 1975 the Pittsburgh school board worried about the high cost of teacher salary increases, even though the city was in a very strong financial position. The Pittsburgh teacher union went on strike and the local court issued an injunction. In the Steel City, a contentious public discussion erupted over the teachers’ illegal strike and the connection between teacher salaries and taxes. Indeed, a robust version of taxpayer resistance to teachers had emerged by the end of the strike.

Miller, Peggy J., and Grace E. Cho. Charisse Jackson and Her Family. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199959723.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 10, “Charisse Jackson and Her Family,” describes a working-class African American family with two daughters. Mrs. Jackson quit her full-time, minimum-wage job in preparation for the birth of Charisse’s sister, who was born during the study. Charisse loved to do arts and crafts projects at home and at the public library, and she was proud of the number of words she could read. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were touched by their daughter’s spontaneous acts of empathy. Charisse had an assertive personality; she knew her own mind and could hold her own in playful banter with her mother and her friends. Her “can-do” attitude convinced her parents that she had high self-esteem, but her Head Start teachers thought she was too quiet, and her kindergarten teacher told her parents that she needed to work on overcoming her shyness and improving her self-esteem.

LaGarry, Alison, and Timothy Conder. How “Identity Play” Protects White Privilege. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190676087.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter, “How ‘Identity Play’ Protects White Privilege: A Meta-Ethnographic Methodological Test,” presents the findings of a 2013 meta-ethnographic analysis on White identity in preservice teachers (PSTs), as well as a methodological test of those findings in light of recent publications on Second-Wave White Teacher Identity Studies (SWWTIS). In the 2013 meta-ethnography, the authors first found a reciprocal argument in which the authors described similar tools or strategies by which White PSTs defended their own privilege. Through further reflexive interpretation, the authors then found a line of argument that situated the multiple theories used in the studies as contested spaces in a larger figured world of whiteness. In testing findings from 2013 against recently published studies on SWWTIS, the authors found that the earlier study anticipated a shift in thinking and theorizing within the field.

Nerby, Jill Ann, and Jessca Otis, eds. Aniridia and WAGR Syndrome. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195389302.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Our hope is to enlighten and encourage those affected by aniridia and WAGR Syndrome by providing patient support and medical information. There is information to inform parents, teachers, doctors, employers, and the public about aniridia and what it is like to live with it. Several renowned doctors contribute medical chapters. Personal experiences from individuals with aniridia and parents with children with aniridia provide encouragement. Contact information for Aniridia Foundation International (AFI) is included. When a child is born without a complete iris, it is usually a symptom of a broader condition. Known as aniridia, this condition can also be a sign other parts of the eye are underdeveloped as well. Moreover, recent research shows that the gene involved can also affect the kidneys, pancreas and forebrain, so aniridia can coincide with a range of symptoms known as WAGR syndrome. Until recently, however, there was very little information available on aniridia and WAGR Syndrome. Even now, not all of the available information is current or correct, so that when a child is diagnosed with aniridia, the parents often find or are given information that is confusing and even frightening. We created this book to help those families see that they are not alone, and there are a lot of answers and a great deal of hope. It contains information about aniridia and WAGR Syndrome for parents, other family members, friends, teachers, doctors, and employers. We have been very fortunate to have several renowned doctors contribute current and comprehensive medical information that will help to provide concrete answers to basic questions and demystify these conditions. The book has many personal stories from individuals and parents that will help to give a more complete picture of what it is like to live with aniridia and WAGR Syndrome and provide encouragement and comfort. It also contains information about where to go for more answers and support, including the Aniridia Foundation International (AFI), http://www.aniridia.net, a non-profit organization created by one of the authors, Jill Nerby. We hope that you will read this book and join us in creating a better future for those with aniridia and WAGR Syndrome.
