<strong>Abstract:</strong> Traditional mandarin nursery rhymes have characteristics that cannot be compared with other literary forms, so using them in mandarin learning can promote learners&#39; communicative ability. Since the words of traditional Mandarin nursery rhymes contain actual language used, they provide learners with the opportunity to be exposed to the target language naturally. In this environment of natural contact, learners can learn Mandarin happily and comfortably, learn Mandarin effectively, and reduce the burden of Mandarin learning. Abstract:
Culture is an important aspect of foreign or second language education as the teaching of foreign languages straddles two languages, the learner’s first language and the target/foreign language, and the different cultures associated with them. Textbooks for the teaching of foreign languages must inevitably orient to cultural elements from at least two cultural practices and environments. In this study, cultural elements in four Mandarin as a second language textbooks written by Malaysian authors were examined using content analysis. The conception of cultural elements proposed by Zhang and Chen and the categorizations of types of culture proposed by Cortazzi and Jin and Chao were employed to investigate the extent to which cultural elements (knowledge-culture or communicative-culture) and types of culture (source, target, international cultures or intercultural interaction) are represented in these textbooks. The analysis found that both knowledge-culture and communicative-culture are embodied in the textbooks. Furthermore, most of the cultural elements identified in the textbooks represent source and target cultures which refer to learners’ own culture and culture of the target language. The presence of international cultures and intercultural interaction, on the other hand, is lower in these textbooks. This study contributes towards a better understanding of how Malaysian authors of Mandarin as a second language textbooks for Malaysian learners incorporate cultural elements in the books they write. It highlights the importance of integrating cultural elements and representing a diversity of cultures in textbooks for teaching Mandarin as a second language.

The need for learning a foreign language in this globalized world has become an essential skill, to the point English is not sufficient, but other foreign languages are required. Colombia has been reshaping its educational curriculum to achieve these foreign language skills. Though there are suggested curriculums for English, the lack of concrete methodologies for Chinese teaching leads to unsuccessful teaching practices. This exploratory case study will observe the first grade Mandarin class in a Colombian private institution whose teachers are native and non-native. There are obstacles in the native teacher's performance since she lacks knowledge of Colombian culture and strategies to implement; she teaches Mandarin through English and lacks a communicative bridge because she does not speak Spanish. This research focuses on those practices to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the class development performed by Mandarin native speaker teachers and the implications and effect those practices have in first graders' learning processes.

Abstract:
In the face of difficulties of teaching and learning due to the impact of Covid-19, online lessons have become vital. This has also affected the teaching of Mandarin as a foreign language at universities. Since Mandarin is considered as a difficult language to learn especially to non-native learners, teaching online has posted an even greater challenge to Mandarin language instructors. This study thus examines the use of a combination of platforms and applications online, customised to create an online learning system called ‘Pocket Mandarin’ to facilitate online Mandarin learning at the beginner level. The purpose is primarily to enable learning to take place in a fun and interactive manner by means of online flashcards, pronunciation, games and quizzes placed in an LMS platform called Padlet. To better understand how ‘Pocket Mandarin’ can effectively facilitate online teaching and learning among EFL basic learners at the tertiary level, a survey method was applied and it consisted of 5 parts which are students’ motivation, students’ attitude, cognitive development, design and interface as well as expectations. The results show that ‘Pocket Mandarin’ was positively accepted by the students who found the lessons motivating, upbuilding, cognitively applicable, with exceptional design and interface and was better than their initial expectations. Thus, there is great potential for the ‘Pocket Mandarin’ to be widely used at a greater scale.

This paper aims to shed some light on the use of Speaking Contest as an Activity to support the learning of Mandarin among non-native Chinese learners. Speaking Contest as an Activity can be a useful tool to motivate the learning of Mandarin among learners. This study was carried out during a Mandarin speaking competition held at UiTM (Perlis). A self-developed questionnaire was distributed to gain understanding and the views of the participants on the use of Mandarin in the speaking contest as an activity to support the learning of a Chinese language among the non-native Chinese learners. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that students agreed that Mandarin speaking competition as an activity was useful to enhance their learning. Thus, activities such as Mandarin speaking contest can be used as creative practices in particular when teaching Mandarin as a foreign language and also for other foreign languages.

The fundamental thing about curriculum development is that there are deep changes and have quite a big impact on Mandarin language learning in educational institutions, especially schools that collaborate with countries that use second international languages for communication. As the world becomes more connected, the need for effective command of Mandarin is more important than ever. With curriculum development, educators can gain insight into innovative approaches to teaching and learning Mandarin. The problem faced by teachers of Mandarin as a foreign language is a lack of understanding of the curriculum in accordance with the demands of the times. Curriculum development greatly influences Mandarin learning. This will have an impact on the difficulty of achieving language mastery by students. A literature and reference search was conducted to address this issue. Here the author explores articles that examine and discuss the findings conceptually, the implications of the development of the Merdeka curriculum which has been influential in the formation of Mandarin language learning. Innovation and renewal are also a necessity for Chinese language learners. Apart from that, it will challenge Mandarin teachers to organize teaching materials within the concept of curriculum development that follows developments and demands of the times.

Defining and identifying clause elements is essential to analyzing and understanding a language, in particular in the practice of teaching and learning the language as a second/foreign language. Despite this, it remains obscure how to define clause elements in Mandarin Chinese in a way operationalizable enough so that these elements can be located efficiently. The present study is intended to examine major existing definitions and identifying principles of clause elements in Mandarin Chinese (mainly the subject, the predicate, the adverbial, the complement, and the object). With a focus on the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese as a second/foreign language, we explore potential problems in these definitions and principles and provide preliminary proposals for improving the definitions and identifying principles of certain elements.

In this quantitative research, 70 students and 5 lecturers from the UiTM Sarawak campus were chosen to participate in a questionnaire survey based on the Daily Conversation Mandarin Language 1 serving as the research text. The objective of this study is to investigate the current situation of Mandarin teaching and learning in UiTM, and to provide suggestions for the teaching of Chinese culture in the curriculum, thus enhancing the quality and efficiency of teaching Mandarin as a foreign language.

Abstract This paper describes and contextualizes Guwan hûwa jy nan, a partial Manchu translation, hitherto unidentified as such, of a Japanese-authored Mandarin primer —Guanhua zhinan—from 1882. In so doing, the paper will highlight certain characteristics of the language primer in Northeast Asia and their consequences for our conceptualization of Mandarin Chinese as China’s national language. East Asian primers in dialogue form moved between communities of readers and even languages with remarkable ease. Not only did the same Chinese texts reach places far apart, they were also adapted for the teaching of languages entirely different from those of their original composition. The Manchu translation of the Japanese Mandarin primer is one example of this phenomenon. It represents the confluence of a pedagogical tradition of teaching the Qing dynastic language and a growing foreign interest in Beijing Chinese, manifest here through the text’s origin in the Meiji government’s interpreter corps.

Abstract:
As one of the many pedagogical strategies found in multilingual contexts, translanguaging can be a solution for learning foreign languages, especially Mandarin. It facilitates using multiple languages (outside the L2) for receptive and productive purposes. Its use can solve communication problems caused by students' language competence during teaching and learning. This study aims to determine the perceptions of Mandarin students at the higher education level in Indonesia regarding the application of translanguaging in class. The study was sequential explanatory design research using mixed research methods. Data collection was carried out in two stages: collecting quantitative data using a questionnaire and then collecting qualitative data through Group Interviews (GI). The distribution of the questionnaire was targeted at 100 students. GI was carried out on five students who had previously participated in filling out the questionnaire. This study shows that learning Mandarin at the tertiary level focuses on the monolingual-traditional learning model, oriented only to L2. Translanguaging is ideologically considered as a form of language incompetence. The higher the language skill, the less likely it is to find translanguaging. This study is expected to have implications for the development of learning Mandarin in a multilingual pedagogical context in Indonesia.

Majority of foreign language learners experience an average level of language learning anxiety. Learning Mandarin as a foreign language is relatively difficult for non-native Chinese learners, it is believed that anxiety is an important issue among non-native Chinese learners. Thus, this quantitative study aimed to identify language learning anxiety level in Mandarin as Foreign language (MFL) classrooms. This study also explores the impact of gender differences among learners in MFL classrooms. 221 MFL learners from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Sarawak branch were selected as respondent in this study. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) designed by Horwitz, Horwitz, &amp; Cope (1986) was adopted to measure learners’ level of language learning anxiety in MFL classrooms. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22. The findings revealed that learners are on a moderate level of anxiety. Independent sample t-test analysis of the findings in this study manifested that there were no significant differences in learners’ level of anxiety in terms of gender. Nevertheless, it was found that female learners experienced higher level of anxiety as compared to male in the three major components. The findings from this study would be significant to both MFL educators and learners as it might help educators to have a better understanding of learners’ level of anxiety and plan more effective teaching methods which could help learners to lessen their level of anxiety in MFL classroom.

Abstract:
This article exposes the implementation and effectiveness of a cross-cultural training program designed for Mandarin teachers from China who instruct students in Indonesia. The training aims to equip these Mandarin teachers with a deeper understanding of the Indonesian context, fostering cultural sensitivity and diversity to enhance their teaching approaches in Indonesia. The study describes the impact of this cross-cultural approach on the teachers based on their perception in terms of the effectiveness in promoting a more inclusive and effective Mandarin language education in the Indonesian setting. The study involved 13 Mandarin teachers from China who teach Mandarin in Surabaya. The results show positive feedback from the Mandarin teachers upon the inclusive Mandarin education through cross-cultural approach and it is effective for future teaching planning. This study highlights the importance of the cross-cultural understanding for second language learning. It can be accommodated by either training or courses provided at the campus for teacher candidates of foreign language.

Mandarin is the second most widely used foreign language in the world. Teaching Mandarin needs appropriate teaching methods and media to achieve learning objectives. Researchers researched the learning of Mandarin conversation in one of the private universities of Bandung to analyze the influence of teaching methods applied and teaching media used during online learning. The research involved a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was done by filling out questionnaires and interviews to determine the alignment of teaching methods and teaching media used and the influence of teaching methods and media on online learning of Mandarin conversation in that university. The results showed that learning Mandarin conversation online using three learning methods (audio-lingual, communicative approach, and task-based methods) and online teaching media Zoom Meeting, YouTube, Morning, and WhatsApp was perceived as effective. It could improve university students’ Mandarin conversation skills.

In terms of exploring educational theories, it is very important as well as philosophical movements which have had quite a big impact on learning Mandarin in the 21st century. As the world becomes more connected, the need for effective Mandarin language acquisition is more important than ever. By studying major theories and philosophies, educators can gain insight into innovative approaches in teaching and learning Mandarin. The problem faced by teachers of Mandarin as a foreign language is a lack of understanding of educational theories and philosophical movements that greatly influence the learning of Mandarin in the 21st Century. This will have an impact on the difficulty of achieving language acquisition by students. Literature and reference searches were carried out to solve this problem. Here the author explores articles that examine and discuss the findings conceptually, the implications of educational theories and philosophical movements which have been very influential in the formation of Mandarin language learning. in the 21st century. Innovation and renewal are also a need for Mandarin language learners. Apart from that, it will challenge Mandarin language teachers to organize teaching materials in the concept of educational theory accompanied by philosophical movements for learning Mandarin in the 21st century.

In order to visualize pronunciation teaching and explore the law of articulation evolution in TCFL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language), we proposed an approach to design a physiology Mandarin speech corpus for the international preparatory students in China. Preparatory students are usually beginners to learn Mandarin, so they are selected as testers to gain the most real law of Mandarin articulation evolution. The corpus was different from an ordinary speech corpus. It consisted of not only text information (such as age, gender, nationality, mother language, Mandarin learning experience, etc.) and audio information, but also the physiological data (such as speech organs’ moving morphology). When the corpus was constructed, data were gathered by a supersonic collecting system because of its safety and low cost. In the initial experiment, 21 initial consonants, 36 simple or compound vowels and tones were tested. The results showed the corpus was significant in Mandarin teaching.

Learners might have several challenges while attempting to learn a second/foreign language. Learners of Chinese face linguistic, psychological, and educational challenges. The integration of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), into teaching foreign languages is a blessing for teachers and learners. This study delved into the auxiliary role of AI-powered applications in mitigating the linguistic, psychological, and educational challenges which non-Chinese learners face while learning Chinese/Mandarin language. Qualitative research was employed, and 20 teachers of Chinese language were selected through theoretical sampling. In-depth interviews were used for collecting data, and MAXQDA was used for thematic analysis. Findings revealed that AI-powered educational applications are useful for helping language learners overcome the commonly reported linguistic, psychological, and educational challenges which non-Chinese learners and teachers of Mandarin might encounter. Findings verify the effectiveness of AI-powered applications, such as ChatGPT, Poe, Brainly, and so forth, in helping teachers and learners of Chinese language learn grammar, structure, idioms, and cultural issues of Chinese language. Findings have implications for foreign language (Chinese) learners and teachers, educational technologists, as well as syllabus designers.

In an era of globalization and increasing cultural exchange between nations, a large number of foreign language learners have turned proficiency in Mandarin into a vital skill that provides individuals with opportunities to enhance communication, cultural understanding and international cooperation. Simultaneously, China's growing economic influence and its pivotal role in global affairs further highlight the promising prospects for Chinese language acquisition. In this context, this study adopts the method of random sampling to assess the YCT vocabulary of 30 first-year students from different language backgrounds at a private school in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Meanwhile, semi-structured interviews with 10 experienced Chinese teachers using the method of purposive sampling are employed to further strengthen the research findings and capture their views on integrating gamification technology into Chinese language teaching. The findings, which reveal a clear gap between the vocabulary of Thai primary school students and the expected YCT standards, as well as feasible gamification strategies to address these issues, have prompted Mandarin educators to re-evaluate current Mandarin teaching methods. This study advocates the integration of gamification strategies in Mandarin teaching in primary schools to promote vocabulary acquisition and student participation. By elucidating the benefits of Mandarin proficiency in a global context and providing actionable recommendations for Mandarin teaching improvement, this study contributes to the ongoing discussion on language education and intercultural competency development.

Recently in the era of globalization, mastery of foreign languages ​​is immensely needed. In addition to English, a foreign language that has been recognized as an international language is Chinese. Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) is one of the educational institutions that opened the Chinese Language Education Study Program/Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Mandarin (PSPBM) since 2014. In 2015, PSPBM UNJ began to involve native Chinese speaker teachers to teach Chinese speaking skills. Native speaker teachers are one of the influential factors in foreign language teaching, merely because native speaker teachers are considered as a role model of perfect pronunciation, regularity of language structure and vocabulary, also the performer of communicative learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the student's perception of the native Chinese speaker in teaching Chinese speaking skills which includes three aspects, namely pedagogical aspects, linguistic aspects, and socio-cultural aspects. This research is a descriptive research with survey method. The results showed that the perception of PSPBM UNJ students towards native Chinese-speaking teachers was generally positive, students generally assumed that the teachers met the indicators contained in the pedagogical aspects, linguistic aspects, and socio-cultural aspects. Positive perceptions of native Chinese teachers have a good influence on the Mandarin language learning process at PSPBM UNJ.

Translanguaging is interpreted as one of the pedagogical strategies for learning foreign languages in a multilingual context where there is the use of several languages for receptive and productive purposes. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of teachers of Mandarin as a Second Language regarding translanguaging (cross-language) approaches in classroom learning. This research method is qualitative research with a foreign language applied linguistic approach. The research data comes from the Focused Discussion Group as the main data source and the Google Form questionnaire as a supporting data source. The FGD was conducted with 12 lecturers at a private university that has a Chinese Language study program. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively according to the results of the FGD. The results of the FGD stated that most of the teachers gave a positive response to translanguaging and that there was the implementation of translanguaging in the classroom by the teachers in a flexible way with a variety of language choices. Translanguaging often occurs when dealing with students with low linguistic abilities where the lecturer uses a language other than the target language when explaining vocabulary, terms and proverbs as well as when giving examples, this reflects the main purpose of implementing translanguaging for most informants is to increase and deepen understanding students on the material. Through this research process, it can be concluded that in the Mandarin pedagogical context, teachers tend to provide tolerance and flexibility for the existence of translanguaging.

The learning system is carried out remotely by utilizing information technology. As time goes by, Mandarin is believed to be the second language in the world. The entry of Mandarin into Indonesia was marked by the 1998 Reformation incident, in which suddenly Mandarin began to mushroom in many places. The prospects and challenges of Mandarin, including other foreign languages, are regulated in the National Language Politics and National Language Policy. However, in its implementation in society, it is still running as if without direction. This paper is entitled 'Challenges and Prospects of Chinese Language Post-Covid-19 Pandemic'. The production of highly intelligible syllables in Mandarin Chinese entails a successful production of tones, which poses a challenge for learners of Chinese as a foreign language. The aim of the current paper is to address this issue by identifying the key tonal features contributing to tone intelligibility in the lexemes produced by Polish learners of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. Samples of Polish female students’ tonal pronunciations at two stages of learning were selected and compared with productions made by a female native speaker of Mandarin Chinese from Taiwan. Four syllables produced by the students were selected from a corpus of read-out passages which had already been assessed for the intelligibility of monosyllabic lexemes by native judges. The students’ pronunciation samples (whose pronunciation improved from the A1 minus language level to A2) were analysed using pitch, fundamental frequency contour, and register span criteria, and then compared to the female native speaker’s pronunciations of the same syllables. Importantly, before the results of this analysis are presented, the simplified model of tones widely used in language instruction is compared and contrasted with the acoustic analysis of tonal productions made by the native speaker. This is done to show to what extent the simplified, widely used model reflects real-life tonal productions.

Abstract Due to the economic growth in East and Southeast Asia, the global interest in teaching and learning Asian languages has been continually increasing in the past two decades. More and more international schools are offering Asian languages as elective second/foreign languages to adolescent learners, such as Arabic, modern Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin), Japanese, and Malay. Since 2008, the most common grammatical mistake, shi (literally to be) had been highlighted by the Cambridge Assessment every single year in the IGCSE Mandarin (0547) examiner reports. This paper reviews the literature of the functions and the error patterns of copula verb shi and “shi…de” construction, then investigates how the textbooks describe the grammatical usages and sequence the different functions of shi for young learners. Based on the qualitative research findings, this study proposes suggestions for improving the description of grammar items in Mandarin textbooks, and illustrates the classroom activities and teaching strategies for parts of speech in the international school context. This research has implications for second language acquisition, pedagogical grammar, and teacher education for IGCSE Mandarin.

Successful communication between two communicators from different cultures does not depend on mastery of linguistic aspects, including grammar and sociopragmatic structures, but also on the ability to capture, understand and empathize with the culture of the communication partner. This shows that there is harmony between foreign language and culture and one's own language and culture.

Through the combination of audio, visual and narration, they not only create authentic communicative situations, but also allow students to learn the culture and social context in which the language is spoken. In Chinese language learning practice, Chinese movies and dramas are able to provide an interesting learning experience, not only as a fun medium but also greatly to improve listening, speaking skills as well as the addition of common vocabulary contained in movies and dramas. In the context of Mandarin Chinese, movies and dramas can be valuable tools in providing an introduction to pronunciation, tone, and intonation and emphasis in speaking. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using Chinese films and dramas as learning media to improve Chinese speaking among Chinese language learning students at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). The unit of analysis in this study is the students majoring in Mandarin at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), who will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the impact of Chinese movies and dramas on their Mandarin language and speaking skills. The researcher wanted to understand the extent to which this approach can improve students’ speaking skills in Chinese and how students respond to this method. Theoretically, this study contributes to the language learning literature by providing insights into how audiovisual media can be effectively used in the context of foreign language education, specifically Mandarin language. The College of Information and Communications Technology of Bulacan State University offers Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language course in one of its programs. The main objective of this study is to develop a web application that focuses on giving Mandarin Chinese dictionaries, lessons, assessments, and tests. Upon the development of the web application, topics under basic Mandarin Chinese, covering Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK) Levels 1 and 2, are considered as its contents since they contain essential topics for learning Mandarin Chinese. The web application for basic Mandarin Chinese was evaluated by its intended end-users and technical experts in web application development using the standard software quality evaluation criteria based on ISO/IEC 25010. The acceptability ratings of intended end-users and technical experts are 4.56 and 4.58, respectively, with a descriptive interpretation of Extremely Acceptable. These ratings show that the Mandarin Chinese language web application was developed well, with appropriate functionalities, features, and content. Upon its implementation, this Mandarin Chinese language web application may be used as an additional tool in teaching and learning Mandarin Chinese.

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the WordWall platform in enhancing the academic performance of beginner Mandarin language learners enrolled in the comprehensive Mandarin online course at the Language Institute of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design, measuring student performance before and after exposure to WordWAll platform. The findings indicate that the platform significantly contributes to improving students' academic performance in learning the Mandarin language. Consequently, it can be concluded that the word-based learning platform serves as an engaging and interactive educational tool that effectively improves students' educational performance in Mandarin language learning.

Background and Purpose: Self-efficacy is one of the aspects of human behaviours related to performance in social cognitive theory. It has been studied in social sciences, education, and languages. There are a variety of self-efficacy scales available in the English and French languages to test one’s self-belief in their ability to learn the target language. To date, no self-efficacy scale catered to the unique characteristics of Mandarin as a foreign or third language (MFL). The objective of this study is to give practical recommendations on creating valid self-efficacy instruments of MFL and making judgments on factor extraction, factor rotation, and factor labelling based on the foreign language literature.&#x0D; &#x0D; Methodology: This quantitative study gathered information through an administration of a survey. The multipart survey consists of the demographic information section and the MFL self-efficacy scales distributed to MFL learners in Malaysian public universities. Data were collected randomly from 614 participants studying MFL at three different levels. Items for MFL self-efficacy were examined using SPSS version 25.0 software.&#x0D; Findings: The final 13 MFL self-efficacy items were reduced to four factors with a total variance of 68.99%. The Promax rotation matrices revealed the presence of a simple four-factor structure, exhibiting the degree of strong factor loadings. The four factors were MFL Speaking, MFL Listening, MFL Reading, and MFL Writing.&#x0D; &#x0D; Contributions: This research provides valid self-efficacy scales for MFL learning. The skill-based Scale could contribute to MFL teaching literature in the Malaysian context. Abstract:
Teaching mandarin is a part of the teaching foreign languages in the world. The teaching targets are the groups of teaching mandarin as the second language. However, regarding the mandarin teaching materials in overseas areas aren't optimistic. This study uses limited surveys of mandarin textbooks in the school, university in Riau Island province of Indonesia, and local mandarin textbooks published by Indonesian bookstores. In recent years, with the close cooperation between Indonesia and China in various aspects. In Indonesia, especially in the Riau Islands Province, there has been a wave of learning Chinese, and Chinese teaching has shown a good development trend. In addition, the rise of Chinese textbooks and teaching in Indonesia has developed rapidly and vigorously in terms of content, quantity, type and other aspects. This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on the publication and use of Chinese textbooks in the Riau Islands Province of Indonesia through field visits, questionnaires and interviews, analyzed their characteristics and usage, and then discussed the achievements and shortcomings of existing textbooks, and put forward some suggestions for the construction of Chinese textbooks in Indonesia in the future. The first part is the introduction, including the origin of the topic, a review of related research, the significance and methods of this study. The second part is a review of the history and development of Chinese teaching in Indonesia. The third part describes the publishing status and usage of Chinese textbooks in Riau Islands, Indonesia. The fourth part is the characteristics and conclusion of Chinese textbooks of different levels and different applicable objects in Riau Islands, Indonesia, combining the objective evaluation of Chinese textbooks with the feedback of users to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the textbooks.

This research is intended to develop a common expressions book for Indonesian traditional market in three languages (Indonesian-English-Mandarin). The purpose of this book is to assist the local sellers and foreign buyers to communicate in the process of buying and selling daily needs. The elements of this book are phonetics symbols to assist the readers in pronunciation, vocabularies to enrich the readers words, expressions to be used in the sellers and buyer conversation and example of conversation to help the readers how to use both vocabularies and expressions in their speaking when buying and selling daily needs. This research applied Research and Development research by applying ADDIE model. The need analysis was done by interviewing some sellers and buyer in traditional market. Based on the data gathered, the researcher design the product by determining the components of the book. To accommodate the communication needs of the buyers and sellers, the book provides vocabularies, expressions and example for conversation in three languages (English, Indonesian and Mandarin). The three validators validated the product, namely language expert by the certified mandarin translator and lecturer of English Language Teaching, material expert and design expert. The product was tried out in three traditional markets in Morowali because these markets are located around the industrial area where the foreign workers live. The output in this research is a book that can be used by the local sellers and foreign buyers in Indonesian traditional market.

Acrostic is a special phenomenon of the modern Chinese language. It is a combination of lexical and syntactical that across “vocabulary” and “grammar” categories. The morphemes can be combined and can also be separated by various form changes depending on its development. Acrostic is always been a crucial part in teaching Chinese language to foreigners and less developed than other parts of the teaching. This study used quantitative method to analyze the problems associated with the acrostic in teaching Chinese to foreigners. Source of the data was learners’ exercise and assignment. The discussion in this article was viewed from the perspective of the outside-oriented teaching, grouped into 3 main sections. The first was in terms of the usability characteristics to the acrostic developments in the acrostic grammar study. The second, based on the results of the questionnaire regarding the use of acrostic, research analyzed students’ main mistakes and their causes. The third was to observe the condition of teaching acrostic. This research is expected to help teachers and learners of Mandarin understand and overcome the difficulties in learning acrostic.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to establish university students’ foreign language preferences. It was motivated by the observation that, in Zimbabwe learners’ foreign language preferences are not included in the curriculum. This study was guided by the pragmatist philosophy which sought what works in a given context. The research design was a linear combination of document analysis, survey and focus group discussions. Data was collected from a stratified sample of 279 adult learners at a university of technology in Zimbabwe. The study found that, Zimbabwe school curriculum is limited by the foreign language policy to offer the following foreign languages: English, French, Portuguese and Chinese mandarin. Learners’ foreign language preferences include Japanese and Chinese to facilitate trade and commerce. Zimbabwe imports computers and vehicles under the “Look East policy.” These technical appliances bring with them repair and maintenance manuals which are in Japanese or Chinese. Consumers who are illiterate in such foreign languages operate and repair them on a trial and error and trial and success basis. The utility value of foreign goods dictates the need for foreign languages in the school curriculum from primary school. Schools limit their foreign languages because there is not compulsory policy. They have no teachers for other foreign languages besides English. The study encourages foreign bilateral relations for the promotion of language teachers’ from Zimbabwe to learn foreign languages and how to teach it within the appropriate context. Foreign embassies canthe teaching of foreign languages by supplying videos which can be played and discussed in the context of the foreign culture. The few lecturers and teachers of foreign languages can be sponsored to write or translate stories from Zimbabwe’s context into any foreign language that they are competent in to enhance the utility value for foreign languages in Zimbabwe.

Abstract:
The present study aims to determine the relationship of professional goals and readiness of advertising students in learning foreign language to be the basis for foreign language training. This study also aims to identify the preferred teaching method for studying foreign language and the ASEAN native language that they are interested to learn. The descriptive research involved 157 first year advertising students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines through a survey. After the data gathering and statistical treatment of data, it was found out that the respondents’ aspiration falls on material security and their multicultural aspiration is towards deeper understanding on other people. The respondents expressed the readiness to learn foreign language to better understand the values, ideals, and assumption in life of their foreign counterparts. Grammar translation approach was preferred for learning the language and the most preferred ASEAN native language are Mandarin, Chinese, Thai, and Bahasa Indonesia.

(supervised by Ambo Dalle and Himala Praptami Adys).This study is a quantitative descriptive study that aims to determine the ability of SMA Insan Cendekia Syech Yusuf XII grade students to write sentences using the measure word (liàngci) and the factors that influence it. The students in this study was 44 students of Insan Cendekia Syech Yusuf high school's class XII. The Student was chosen by using random sampling, and the sample in this study was 22 students in class XII MIA 1. The data of this research was obtained from a test of using measure words, while to find out the factors that influence the use of measure word, students used a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the percentage technique. The results showed that the level of students' writing skills using measure word (liángci) was in the good category (80%). From the results of the questionnaire distribution, it was found that the factors that affect the students' ability to write sentences using measure word (liàngei) are: 1) Supporting factors are the methods used by the teacher in teaching Mandarin, the pleasure of students learning Mandarin. 2) The inhibiting factors are: Mandarin is a difficult subject; a lack of Mandarin textbooks; the students' little Mandarin vocabulary; parents rarely provide motivation to learn Mandarin. The Diploma Mandarin Language Study Program at UNS transitioned to online learning as an alternative to face-to-face instruction following the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign language learning, including Mandarin Chinese, typically involves native speakers as instructors. However, online learning with native speakers can inadvertently result in student anxiety. To address this issue, the program collaborated with the UNS Confucius Institute to bring native lecturers onboard. Nevertheless, certain native lecturers encountered visa-related challenges that prevented them from teaching in a face-to-face setting. Inspired by the post-COVID online learning landscape, the Study Program formulated a policy to continue certain Chinese language courses online.This study aims to analyze the impact of online Chinese language learning with native lecturers on the levels of anxiety among Diploma Mandarin Language students. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a case study design and data collection techniques, including observation and questionnaires. The research seeks to contribute theoretically by addressing the gaps in the literature related to student anxiety during online Mandarin learning with native speakers. The study involved 30 randomly selected students from the Diploma Mandarin Language classes of 2021 and 2022 at UNS. The results of this study indicated that 73.33% of the respondents experienced anxiety while participating in online learning with native instructors. The types of anxiety included reduced learning conditions, diminished self-efficacy, and decreased learning effectiveness.

When the West met East at the Pearl River delta during the 19th century, learning Cantonese as a second language was rooted in the area. Nowadays, there always exists a need by expatriates who are living and working in Hong Kong for learning the local language. The field was developed and influenced by theories in TESOL and foreign language education. It is also inspired by ideas and concepts of teaching Chinese as a second language since the learning of Mandarin Chinese has rapidly spread out in recent decades. Teaching Cantonese as a second language has developed with its own characteristics. This article reviews the development of teaching Cantonese as a second language in terms of pedagogical framework and teaching approaches. The article presents different pedagogical foci in the field of teaching Cantonese as a second language and discusses the academic debates whether to focus on linguistic competence or on pragmatic language use when teaching Cantonese as a second language in Hong Kong.

Song has a universal appeal that connects all cultures and languages. Besides the potential to make learning interesting and fun, songs as authentic materials are very versatile and can be developed into various learning activities. The purpose of this service activity is to improve speaking and listening skills in Mandarin and master vocabulary more easily. The methods we use in this activity are demonstrations and training. The results of this service activity can be concluded 2 things; Mandarin song applications can improve four competencies in learning foreign languages and can increase children's motivation in learning foreign languages. In addition, it is hoped that the use of songs as a learning medium can provide new references as a way to increase children's learning motivation used in teaching and learning activities (KBM).

Pembelajaran Bahasa Mandarin di Indonesia menjadi penting karena saat ini dunia kerja membutuhkan banyak tenaga kerja yang mahir berbahasa asing, terutama bahasa Mandarin, sehingga banyak sekolah di Indonesia memunculkan mata pelajaran Bahasa Mandarin, termasuk sekolah-sekolah di Malang Raya. Dalam pengajaran bahasa Mandarin oleh guru-guru SMA diperlukan media pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin yang sesuai, agar pengajar atau guru dapat mentrasfer ilmu bahasa Mandarin kepada siswa dengan baik. Pengabdian pelatihan pembuatan media 数字教材dilakukan sebagai upaya meningkatkan kemampuan guru-guru bahasa Mandarin dalam menyusun media atau bahan ajar 数字教材 yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan kemampuan siswa pada tiap jenjangnya, selain itu dapat menjadikan guru lebih percaya diri mampu menggali potensi untuk peningkatan mutu pendidikan. Adapun kegiatan dalam pengabdian berupa (1) Menjelaskan pentingnya media pembelajaran; (2) Meperkenalan media 数字教材; (3) Mendemonstrasikan langkah-langkah pembuatan media 数字教材; (4) Guru praktek membuat media 数字教材 secara langsung dengan arahan narasumber. Hasil dari kegiatan pelatihan pembuatan media 数字教材 ini menunjukkan bahwa para guru bahasa Mandarin antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan yang dilaksanakan, terbukti dari para guru dengan antusias membuat media 数字教材 sesuai dengan tema materi yang dipilih, melakukan tanya jawab dan diskusi mengenai media 数字教材serta merespon pemateri selama kegiatan pelatihan pembuatan media 数字教材 berlangsung. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan pembuatan media 数字教材 penting dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menyusun media pembelajaran bahasa Mansarin sesuai materi tiap jenjang sekolah oleh guru-guru bahasa Mandarin dan juga dapat menambah wawasan tentang media terbaru bagi guru. With the adoption of Mandarin as the official language of the United Nations, people in the world, including the Indonesian people, are increasingly interested in learning and deepening Mandarin. Learning Mandarin in Indonesia is important because currently the world of work requires a lot of workers who are proficient in foreign languages, especially Mandarin, so that many schools in Indonesia introduce Mandarin subjects, including schools in Malang Raya. In teaching Mandarin by high school teachers, appropriate Chinese language learning media are needed, so that teachers can transfer Chinese knowledge to students well. The service of media creation training is carried out as an effort to improve the ability of Chinese language teachers in compiling media or teaching materials that are in accordance with the needs and abilities of students at each level, besides that it can make teachers more confident and able to explore the potential for improving the quality of education. The activities in the training are (1) Explaining the importance of learning media; (2) Introducing the media 数字教材; (3) Demonstrating the steps of making media 数字教材; (4) The teacher practices making media 数字教材directly. The results of this training of making media 数字教材showed that the Mandarin language teachers were enthusiastic in participating in the training carried out, as evidenced by the teachers enthusiastically making media according to the theme of the material chosen, conducting questions and answers and discussions about the media and responding presenters during the media creation training activities. Thus, it can be concluded that training in making media is important to improve the ability to develop Mansarin language learning media according to the material for each school level by Chinese language teachers and also to add insight into the latest media for teachers. Every oral communication is shaped by a series of closely linked factors and rhythm is one of them. The rhythmical flow in colloquial Mandarin Chinese was thoroughly described by the Czech phonetician Oldřich Švarný, who invented a unique notation system dedicated to facilitating the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. His prosodic transcription parses speech into a two-level arrangement of prosodic units. It displays the speech rhythm as an alternation of rhythmically significant and insignificant syllables of unequal tone prominence. The paper contributes to Švarný’s findings by shifting the attention from prefabricated teaching materials to an example of unrehearsed dynamic speech. Specifically, it attempts to outline the basic rhythmical features of personal narrative and confront them with the current understanding of speech rhythm in colloquial Chinese. It also demonstrates how Švarný’s methodological framework can be exploited to investigate different types of spoken discourse.

Abstract:
Language is closely related to social and cultural aspects, including in the process of learning foreign languages such as Mandarin. Effective Chinese language learning does not only focus on linguistic aspects, but also requires an understanding of the culture of origin of the language. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the application of culture-based learning in increasing motivation to learn Chinese. The method used is literature study or library research, with documentation technique as data collection method and content analysis technique as data analysis method. Based on the analysis of twelve research articles, it was found that the integration of cultural elements such as traditional games, visual media, and Chinese pop culture can create a learning experience that is fun, interesting, and encourages students' curiosity towards Chinese. In conclusion, culture-based learning is proven to have a positive influence on motivation to learn Chinese and can be used as an alternative teaching strategy that is more contextual and fun.

Abstract:
Due to China’s rapid economic development, there has been an increased demand for Chinese language education in Malaysia. The utilization of appropriate language learning strategies plays a crucial role in ensuring successful learning outcomes. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate learners’ perception regarding their use of learning strategies in acquiring Mandarin as a foreign language. A quantitative survey was conducted among 148 students enrolled in an Introductory Mandarin course in a public university. The survey employed a 5 Likert-scale and consisted of four sessions which are demographic profile, cognitive components, metacognitive self-regulation and resource management. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS. The findings indicate that the resource management components “environment management” and “help-seeking” received a highest mean scores (M=4.14, 4.15), followed by the cognitive component “rehearsal” (M=4). Conversely, metacognitive self-regulation strategies had the lowest mean score (M=3.78). Furthermore, the research also reveals a strong positive correlation between metacognitive self-regulation, cognitive strategies and resource management strategies in foreign language learning. It is hoped that this study can provide insights for instructors to enhance their teaching approach to facilitate students' learning.
