Abstract:
ABSTRACT An ethics curriculum is an integral part of most health profession courses. This thesis will explore using a qualitative approach to investigate the learning and application of professional ethical practice by Flinders University speech pathology students. This work will identify factors that may influence students’ readiness to learn about ethics. The knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin professional ethical practice which speech pathology students were able to demonstrate at the conclusion of their entry level course will be illustrated. Abstract:
Within the past decade little research has been conducted in the United States to examine the preparedness of beginning speech-language pathologists; the seminal article used for this research study comes from the United Kingdom (Horton, Byng, Bunning, & Pring, 2004). Literature from the past few decades indicates that there may be deficiencies in the way that beginning speech-language pathologists are being trained clinically. The review of the literature suggests that the field may lack a clear and broadly supported learning theory or framework for the clinical supervision and training of sp

Background: Enhanced Milieu Teaching (EMT) is an evidence-based naturalistic developmental behavioural intervention (NDBI) to improve expressive communication. EMT produces favourable long-term results in both vocabulary growth and linguistic structure after a relatively short intervention period. However, very little research has been conducted to prove its effectiveness in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Furthermore, before interventions can be implemented in different contexts, there is a need to determine if any adaptations are needed to maximize the fit of the intervent

Over recent decades health care policy in the English NHS has focused on the role of patient choice of provider as a lever for health care improvement (Mays 2010; Fotaki 2013). The thesis explores the degree to which patient choice policy has been successful in its aim. Specifically, it explores the influence that patient choice policy has on changing and shaping organisation culture in an acute hospital trust. A qualitative case study was undertaken in a teaching hospital Trust involving interviews with 30 interviewees drawn from different levels of the hierarchy in the hospital. The study al

Abstract:
Augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) systems are used to give voice to individuals who are nonverbal. As AAC systems become more complex and prevalent in the classroom expectations of school-based professionals expand. However, the roles of those expected to support AAC systems, primarily teachers and speech-language pathologists (SLPs), are not clearly defined. Without clearly defined roles, professionals may not provide needed support to students who use AAC. Dewey's theory of community suggests that role confusion leads to insufficient and ineffective services. The purpose of this c

There is concern about the recently increasing number of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), yet little is known about its long-term neurodevelopmental effects. School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are in a unique position to comment on potential long-term consequences of NAS because their caseloads include children with a variety of communication disorders and comorbidities. The acquisition of emergent literacy skills has become a prominent focus of early childhood education programs in recent years as research has demonstrated the significance of emergent literacy ability in the process of learning to read. The effectiveness of use of varied instructional techniques targeting the emergent literacy domains of phonological awareness, written language awareness, emergent writing, and oral language is well described in the literature. Consequently, educational service providers like speech-language pathologists are being called upon to assume roles in emergent litera
