Noroozi, Majeed. "Task-based Language Teaching versus Present, Practice, Produce: Efficacy in Language Learning and Assessment." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3874.

Full text
Abstract:
Long (2015) defines Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) as “an approach to course design, implementation, and evaluation intended to meet the communicative needs of diverse groups of learners” (p. 5). Task-based Language Teaching has been introduced and developed by second language acquisition researchers as well as language educators in response to the teacher dominated and focus-on-formS methods of language teaching in classrooms such as the approach of Present, Practice, Produce (PPP) (Van den Branden, 2006). The present study aimed to build upon the previous literature on the possible differential effects of the PPP approach and TBLT on students’ language learning (e.g., De la Fuente, 2006;; Lai, Zhao, & Wang, 2011; Li, Ellis & Zhu, 2016; Gonzalez-Lloret & Nielson, 2015; Shintani, 2011, 2013) which have examined the differential effects of these two language methodologies on learners’ language learning. The present study aimed to address the methodological drawbacks of the Li et al. (2016) study by including Task-based Language Assessment (TBLA) in its methodology alongside the GJT and the EIT so as to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the comparison of PPP and TBLT. Thirty-four [e1] participants from three English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes at the lower intermediate level of proficiency participated in this study, which took place at the Parsian Language Institute located in the city of Ghaemshahr in Iran. The three classes were randomly assigned to three groups of TBLT, PPP, and Control. Learning was measured with the same types of tests as the Li et al. (2016) study, i.e., a GJT and an Elicited imitation test; however, a Task Assessment was added. Participants were administered the pre-assessments, then participated in the TBLT, PPP and Control group treatments, respectively, and finally performed the post-assessments. A Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test revealed that the performance of TBLT and PPP on the GJT and the EIT significantly improved from pre-assessment to post-assessment, while the Control group did not show any significant improvements on any of the tests. As for the task assessment, results showed that only the TBLT group made significant improvements on their post-assessment, while the PPP and Control group did not statistically improve [e1]Spell out at the beginning of sentences.

Smith, Matthew W. "Teaching the 'Third World' : difference and development in the school curriculum." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3998/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the communication of the 'Third World' in the school curriculum, focusing particularly on its role, location and significance. Using data collected from two UK secondary schools the thesis combines ethnographic methods with theoretical perspectives from sociology, development studies and cultural studies. The conceptual focus of the research is on the ways the communication of the 'Third World' constructs notions of difference and identity in the school curriculum, informed by its location within three frameworks of meaning: development; charity; multiculturalism. The communication of the 'Third World' through each of these is addressed in turn, focusing particularly on the variety of notions of 'self, 'world' and ' other' which are constructed. Attention is also drawn to the epistemological foundations underpinning the different constructions of the 'Third World', and to the implications this has for engagements with notions of difference. The research seeks to explain the contradictions within and between the schools' communication of the 'Third World', emphasising the micro-politics of the schools and their location within a broader political context. In particular, attention is drawn to the role of the aims, structure, and organisation of the schools in informing the communication of the 'Third World', and to tensions between national and local curricular authority. It is argued that contradictions within and between the different constructions of the 'Third World' reflect changes in how the 'Third World' and development are understood. However, the potential improvements in its communication that this suggests are being constrained at both local and national levels. Thus, the research concludes by identifying policy initiatives which can both build on this potential, and prevent further prejudiced and discriminatory constructions of the 'Third World'. It also suggests further research which will enhance our understanding in this area.

Cullen, Lorraine Ann. "Leading curriculum change : developing inquiry based teaching and learning in a primary school." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14288/.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout my professional journey, I have encountered many thought provoking experiences which have, not only helped to shape my practice, but have also encouraged me to deeply question my purpose as a leader within education. Children growing up in the 21st century will encounter rapid change within their lives. The question that resonates deeply within me is what and how do we teach them today so that they are better prepared for tomorrow’s world? It is this concern that provides the impetus for this research. The idea of learning being placed at the heart of the core business of leadership is embodied in what is understood as Instructional Leadership. Through practitioner action research, this study investigates the leadership of curriculum change that takes full account of the views of children. It explores the kind of actions that need to be undertaken as a leader to effect curriculum change; actions that serve to locate the child as the lead learner. In developing an inquiry based approach to teaching and learning, this study investigates how resources and the tool and artefacts of teaching are deployed, pedagogical strategies implemented and considers the development of a cultural, emotional and cognitive climate conducive to inquiry learning.

Deweese, David L. "Instructional Planning and Teaching: Perceptions of Practice and Department Expectations of Principal Preparation Program Faculties." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1994. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2667.

Full text
Abstract:
This study of principal preparation programs composing the Danforth Foundation Program for the Preparation of School Principals (DPPSP) was conducted to identify and compare the perceptions of program faculty and program coordinators of their respective instructional planning and teaching practices, and their like perceptions of department expectations of faculty regarding these same roles. Variables were constructed using a pilot survey with selected faculty who were members of the Southern Region Council for Education Administration. There were three major findings. Faculty and program coordinators ranked their perceptions of their own practice highly. Faculty and program coordinators ranked their perceptions of their own instructional planning and teaching higher than they ranked their perceptions of department expectations of faculty regarding their teaching. Faculty and program coordinators ranked their perceptions of their own practice higher than they ranked their self-reported use of various instructional planning and teaching strategies, and methods and resources. Several recommendations resulted from this study. Among the most notable were the following: faculty and program coordinators in DPPSP programs need to conduct research which focuses on graduate perceptions of the quality of instructional planning and teaching they experienced while in the preparation program: similar research which focuses on other principal preparation program faculty teaching practices needs to be conducted, possibly using a qualitative approach: in light of the disparity between faculty and program coordinator perceptions of their instructional planning and teaching practices, and their self-reported utilization of various instructional planning and teaching methods and resources, it was recommended that DPPSP faculties and coordinators engage in critical assessment of the assumptions under which they plan for and enact teaching and learning activities.

Vail, Teresa M. "Teachers' professional development experiences: Implications for teaching practice." Scholarly Commons, 2011. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/28.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to inquire into the ways in which participation in physical science professional development impacts science teachers' professional learning and ultimately their practice over time. This study strove to provide a greater understanding of teachers' processes as they engage in professional learning and make changes in their practice long after the requirements of the professional development have been met. The six respondents that participated in the inquiry were physical science educators who were teaching in four different high schools in Central California. The guiding research question was stated as: How does participation in physical science professional development impact teachers' professional learning and ultimately their practice? Three sub-questions were also explored: In what ways does physical science professional development impact teachers' pedagogical content knowledge over time? In what ways does physical science professional development impact teachers' curriculum decision-making processes over time? In what ways does physical science professional development support a teacher's professional learning over time? Collective case study methodology was used in order to acquire multiple perspectives on the processes of teachers' professional learning and how professional development experiences have impacted this process. From four cross-case analyses of interviews, classroom observations, and documents, six themes emerged elucidating the process of professional learning. The process of professional learning is "driven" by a constant desire to learn resulting in the participation in professional development experiences where bits-n-pieces of curriculum are incorporated into the teachers' practice supported by relationships and reflection. The pressure to conform to education policy tempers the entire process of professional learning. Lastly, the process of professional learning has produced teachers as leaders. Each aspect of the process of professional learning has been impacted by the respondents' participation in professional development. By engaging in the iterative process of professional learning described here, respondents are transforming their professional development experiences in order to learn from and about their practice over extended periods of time. As professional learners, the respondents act as change agents in their own practice, schools and learning communities. Based on the results, implications for practice and recommendations for further inquiry are also presented.

Li, Ying. "Curriculum innovation and listening comprehension within the national English teaching reform in China." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12313/.

Full text
Abstract:
The ‘National English Teaching Reform’ at university level, also known as the Reform of College English, was initiated in China in 2003. The new mode of English teaching was a combination of classroom teaching and student self-access learning via CWISs (Campus-Wide Information System). The emphasis of the Reform was on developing the students' all-round ability, especially the ability of listening and speaking. The purpose of this study was to research the implementation of this curriculum innovation in a specific university. The research applied both quantitative and qualitative methods, namely, questionnaires, interviews, listening comprehension classroom observations, and document review. According to the data collected, multi-media facilities were more widely used than before but individual self-access facilities were insufficient for every student to get access when needed. At the same time, full advantage of the facilities was not being taken of. With regard to English Listening Comprehension, students spent more time in practising, but rather than being motivated by a wish to improve their all-round ability, many of them regarded it as necessary primarily for the purpose of passing the nationwide College English Test (CET), a qualification highly regarded by employers. A general finding was that autonomous study had not yet been realised in the university. Various reasons for this are explored, among them the fact that teachers did not provide a bridge between classroom instruction and self-access learning. Teachers' own difficulties in coping with the technology are also considered. Four series of English Listening Comprehension textbooks were designed for the Reform and were recommended by the Ministry of Education. However, the researched University used another textbook package because it was evaluated to be more suitable for students.

Full text
Abstract:
At a technical post-secondary school in the Northeast United States, campus leaders lacked formative data of faculty skills and knowledge needed for instruction in a hybrid format involving both face-to-face instruction and on-line instruction. Therefore, the delivery of appropriate professional development (PD) programs for faculty whose duties include hybrid format instruction has not been provided. The purpose of this study was to identify the faculty experiences of teaching in a hybrid-learning environment, and their perceived PD needs to provide effective instruction in a hybrid-learning environment. This study explored vocational teachers' experiences and perceived PD needs related to teaching in a hybrid-teaching environment. Using Kolb's model of experiential learning, a qualitative case study design was used to sample 8 vocational instructors who met the criteria of teaching in the hybrid-learning environment in the medical assistant or the dental assistant programs. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews and were analyzed using axial coding. Themes emerging from the findings included the changing role of the instructor, concerns of plagiarism, faculty PD for teaching in a hybrid-learning environment, and practice using the learning management system (LMS). Findings based on themes indicated PD on the learning management system (LMS), and pedagogy to teach in the hybrid-learning environment is needed for the teachers. A white paper recommending initial on-going systemic PD for faculty teaching in the hybrid-learning environment was developed. Implications for social change are that faculties will become more knowledgeable instructing in the hybrid-learning environment, which will the development of hybrid teaching skills and better-prepared dental and medical assistant graduates who will provide improved care for clients.

Chiu, Hazel Lai Wan. "Grammar teaching concepts and practice in the task-based secondary English curriculum of Hong Kong." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10007359/.

Full text
Abstract:
Grammar has often been a topic which receives attention in the English Language curricula of Hong Kong schools, irrespective of what teaching approaches are being endorsed. Particularly in the task-based English Language curriculum implemented in secondary schools from 2002, grammar is presented as one of the highlights. This thesis aims to investigate how grammar teaching is perceived and practised within the task-based secondary curriculum of Hong Kong. The study covers three major areas of investigation: (a) language teaching policy and curriculum in Hong Kong; (b) language and grammar teaching materials; and (c) individual teachers' grammar teaching concepts and practice. The purpose is to explore the transmission of curriculum ideas and examine whether theory, policy and practice align in the process of curriculum implementation. The first two areas were examined through literature review and materials analysis, to establish a context for interpreting the empirical data collected from lesson observations and interviews to investigate the third area of how grammar teaching was perceived and practised by individual teachers in their classrooms. Relationships among these three areas were examined in order to present a comprehensive picture of the concepts and practice concerning grammar teaching in Hong Kong secondary schools. From the planned curriculum in the curriculum documents to the enacted curriculum in language classrooms, a chain of intricate relationships is involved regarding the connection of curriculum ideas to second language teaching theory and research, the transference of curriculum ideas to textbooks and grammar teaching materials, and the implementation of curriculum ideas in the language classrooms by individual teachers. IV Results showed that curriculum ideas did not often transfer fully to teaching materials or apply to teaching practice as intended. There was evidence of interactions at different levels as participants in the curriculum implementation process engaged with and interpreted the curriculum ideas from their own perspectives of operationalising ideas in the intended curriculum. Through exploring these relationships, suggestions for grammar teaching within the secondary task-based curriculum have been proposed to inform future pedagogy, research and policy.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Education in South Africa is a concern to many stakeholders, including government, teachers, teacher unions and non-governmental organisations, owing to the poor academic performances of learners. Mathematics teachers, the focus of this study, are confronted with a constantly changing curriculum. Teachers are often targeted by the education authorities and general public as the primary cause of the poor outcomes of education in South Africa. This study considers the experiences of Grades 10–12 mathematics teachers in the Cape Winelands regarding curriculum change and its influence on their professional practice. The basic assumptions of social constructivism served as overarching theory. The researcher judged that a conceptual framework would make for a clearer and more systematic way of dealing with the constructs that underpin this study. The conceptual analysis framework, which was developed by combining the work of Rogan and Grayson, as well as that of Remillard, which is a perfect fit to this study, guided the interpretation and analysis of the data. A deductive approach in data analysis was applied in accordance with the conceptual framework used in this study. Being explorative in nature, this study is a qualitative design and therefore an interpretive methodological approach was followed. A purposive and convenience sampling method was used whereby teachers from six schools were pre-selected: two from ex-Model C schools, two from previously disadvantaged black schools and two from previously disadvantaged coloured schools. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings of this study pointed to teachers’ acceptance of education reform and changes in the curriculum, provided they were not too radical. Teachers requested involvement on a broad spectrum throughout the planning and implementation process, and proper training and support prior to implementation. Factors that militated against implementation were, among others, poor facilities, resources and instructional aides; poorly trained change facilitators; poor leadership and management at schools; and the many constraints that the learners brought to the school and the classroom.

Abstract:
The 1996 Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Brasileira (LDBEN) [Brazilian Education Bases and Guidelines Law] paved the way for the production of various strands of literature, involving both guidelines and definitions on the organisation of content and even on the ideas to have generated these bases. The National Curriculum Parameters, Directives and Guidelines soon followed, and, along with innovations in education, scientific, economic and social development and influences from political decisions, have come to subsidise the procedures for curricular reforms or changes produced across each state. This study aims to understand and discuss how (mis)understanding(s) are established on the part of mathematics teachers in the São Paulo state education network by considering teachers engagement, elements which they believe facilitate or complicate the process and practical possibilities for the generation of counterarguments in the classroom. We therefore produced and carried out questionnaires and interviews with two groups of teachers in three regions in the state of São Paulo. This allowed us to develop three strands of focus for our study: the curriculum, teaching competence and teaching practice. In terms of the curriculum, we researched the concepts behind it, the theories to have influenced it and the research into Education and Mathematics Education to have fed the production of the literature. Competence is an innovative element in literature on curricula; it dominates curricula, and yet there is plurality inherent to its meaning. In terms of teacher training, we highlight both professional knowledge and the counterarguments developed in the teachers discourse.

Abstract:
Most colleges and universities offer a general course in elementary art education to provide instruction to the elementary generalist to enable that student to later provide art instruction to students at the elementary level. This course is commonly referred to as the two-credit course in elementary art education throughout this thesis. This thesis is a case study investigation of a certified elementary art specialist and a non-art certified teacher teaching elementary art in the Subject School District in Utah. It asks and gathers data on three main questions. How is art education valuable for elementary students? What is a quality elementary art curriculum? How does an elementary art specialist change the learning experience of elementary art students? Under these three main questions the following questions are also considered: Where do teachers obtain their curricula? What research exists that describes differences between art specialists and non-art specialists teaching elementary art? What were the qualities within each art room? What types of art projects are being taught in these two different classrooms?Further, a survey was constructed to seek answers about the attitudes towards art education in the Subject School District in relation to the three questions under consideration. To ensure the maximum in statistical accuracy, the survey was sent to every elementary school in this district including all elementary administrators. The survey contained 49 statements on attitudes towards elementary art education. There were 129 elementary educators and administrators out of 2,300 from Subject School District that responded. The data from the survey was analyzed to determine where these attitudes lie and the thoughts on the importance of art education at the elementary level. The results of this survey show the typical elementary educator in Subject School District feel the arts are indeed an important part of the elementary curriculum. However, the majority do not feel fully prepared to teach a quality elementary art curriculum and feel elementary art should be taught by art specialists.

This researchâs objective was to study the teaching practice in a working context permeated by the curricular renovation. It is composed of a case study with an ethnographic basis structured in a research performed by elementary school I teachers from a public school in the township of MaracanaÃ, located at Fortalezaâs metropolitan region in the state of CearÃ. Observations were made mainly, but not exclusively, inside of the classrooms, as well as interviews with the participant teachers, school directors and central administration and documental analysis managers. The researchâs results were organized according to the aspects of the teaching practice, like school planning, textbook use, formation actions, school schedulesâ distribution and the research sources used by teachers in their planning. This studyâs formulations allow the affirmation that the teachersâ position didnât show meaningful changes that could be associated to the institutional change proposed. The analysis reveals that neither the teacherâs work is modified nor is it oriented to what is expected from them. The teaching work seems to already hold a previous formation which grows from the principles and experiences acquired through the teaching years and which resist the curricular and pedagogical changes. The change in teaching practice occurs at the moment in which he feels it is meaningful, in the sense that while thereâs no meaning for it regarding the practice inside of the classroom, none of it will reach the school.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the findings of a case study excavating the event of the ‘Critique’ (crit), the formative assessment method within a Fine Art Studio Practice curriculum. Arguments informed by critical postmodernism, education theories and contemporary art criticism are utilised to construct a dialectic of higher education, contemporary art and fine art studio practice. An emphasis is placed on the importance of agency, expressed through intentionality and critical thinking, with a recognition of the relationship between ‘the self’ and ‘the other’. Using critical discourse analysis, the disjunctions between the espoused and practiced curriculum are explored. The researcher analyses how the assessment practices of the case studied are influenced by unexamined agentic factors, such as inter-departmental relations, lecturers’ assumptions and prior learning, and structural determinants, such as the medium-specific Bachelor of Fine Art degree structure and prevailing artistic traditions. The research findings indicate that these are underpinned by tensions between two orientations, the espoused curriculum’s discourse-interest informed by critical theory, and the theory-in-use. The latter is shown to have unexamined modernist leanings towards formalism and a master-apprentice relationship between lecturer and students, which encourages reproduction rather than critical, creative thinking. The dominant discourses in the case studied construct a negative dialectic of the artist-student that can be seen to deny student agency and authorial responsibility. Findings suggest that students experience this as alienating, to the extent that to preserve their sense of self, they adopted surface and strategic approaches to learning. An argument is made for lecturers’ critically reflexive engagement with their teaching practice, and thereby to model ethical relationships between ‘self’ and ‘other’ during ‘crits’. In addition, emphasis is placed on how assessment practices should be more aligned with the espoused curriculum, so that the importance of a reflexive relationship between form and content, process and product, intentionality and interpretation is acknowledged.

Abstract:
In Ireland, formal mentoring as a mechanism for supporting student learning in the Teaching Practice (TP) phase of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) is at a developmental stage. The Irish Government appears to support mentoring initiatives in ITE, however, there is little evidence of a clear policy on student teacher learning, and the role of mentoring within it. This study investigates physical education teacher education (PETE) student learning on TP within a community of practice framework. Currently, the process of informal mentoring of PETE students during TP is undertaken by untrained cooperating teachers (CTs) as an unacknowledged gesture of goodwill. This has implications for the quality of PETE student learning during TP and became the subject of this research. Employing a range of qualitative data collection methods, this study focused on one umbrella case study (Greendale University, schools and PETE students) and five individual case studies: tetrads of PETE student, CT, university tutor (UT) and school principal (SP) during one academic year. PETE student learning was investigated from the perspectives of each member of the tetrad and data collected were analysed using grounded theory. Findings from this research concluded that (a) untrained CTs were unsuitable mentors and (b) untrained UTs were inappropriate tutors for PETE students as they both needed teaching expertise, a positive disposition and adequate training to embrace their respective roles. The study also found that within TP, there was a perceived lack of parity between the schools and university, with SPs feeling excluded and taken for granted by the university. This often led to open hostility between CTs and UTs, who were unclear about their respective TP roles. The combination of these factors resulted in PETE students learning the powerful hidden curriculum of TP which encouraged them to learn pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in an unsupported and often isolated manner.

Abstract:
Teacher education researchers and policy makers recognize field experience, particularly student teaching, as a critical component of pre-service teacher learning and development. The co-teaching model of student teaching, in which cooperating teachers and student teachers jointly plan and deliver instruction, has been adopted by university-based teacher education programs across the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between elements of the co-teaching model of student teaching and teacher efficacy outcomes for student teachers. Research suggests that teacher efficacy, a teacher’s beliefs in his or her capacity to affect student performance, is positively associated with teachers’ behaviors and commitment to teaching as well as student achievement and motivation. This quantitative study utilized multiple regression statistical analyses to examine the relationship between co-teaching overall and the relationship, communication, classroom applications, and knowledge base elements and teacher efficacy overall and the domains of efficacy in student engagement, efficacy in instructional strategies and efficacy in classroom management. Descriptive statistics indicated that the relationship and communication elements of student teaching were more prevalent than the classroom applications and knowledge base elements. Student teachers in the sample reported higher levels of efficacy in instructional strategies than efficacy in classroom management and efficacy in student engagement. A positive and statistically significant relationship between teacher efficacy overall, efficacy in student engagement, efficacy in instructional strategies, and efficacy in classroom management and the co-teaching model of student teaching, after controlling for gender and credential program, was found. The findings of this study substantiate teacher education policy makers’ support for the co-teaching model of student teaching.

The study is part of the theoretical effort to contribute to the understanding of the field of teacher education. Prioritize goals and analyze the formation in pedagogy courses, their curriculum and pedagogical influences on the students, who already hold a teaching function, during that course, see how is the teacher-student relationship, the organization of work in the classroom, identify the learning and assessment procedures resulting from the initial training. As a working hypothesis that the teacher is influenced by scientific knowledge, leading to profound changes in the making and thinking in their teaching, as in the way of organizing teaching. Considering also that the teaching knowledge, the experience is incorporated in a concrete reality, coupled with the knowledge developed forwarded to it during its formation. The analysis allowed us to compare theory and practice, because this is a qualitative research, with voluntary participation of the actors interviewed. It is pointed out in conclusion, that training in the pedagogy of student teachers is considered by them as important to rethink their practice, influencing and playing from the apprehension and understanding of theories and concepts for teachers to training. Thus we understand that it is for teachers training courses a great responsibility for building a curriculum that goes beyond a curriculum organized by disciplines separate and watertight, but rather an interdisciplinary and integrated into a social practice conscious and critical educational

Abstract:
ABSTRACT An ethics curriculum is an integral part of most health profession courses. This thesis will explore using a qualitative approach to investigate the learning and application of professional ethical practice by Flinders University speech pathology students. This work will identify factors that may influence students’ readiness to learn about ethics. The knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin professional ethical practice which speech pathology students were able to demonstrate at the conclusion of their entry level course will be illustrated. Also described will be the factors, identified by students and academics and field educators, which may influence student learning of this complex area of practice. To explore this topic, the results of “The Defining Issues Test” (Rest, 1979b) of moral judgement development, independent and scaffolded case studies, as well as group and individual interviews with students, and individual interviews with academic and field educators have been used. Results from this study suggest that a significant number of the undergraduate speech pathology students involved in this study found learning and applying ethical principles difficult, as their ability to reason morally remained conventional and rule bound. At the point of graduation, the students applied clinical and ethical reasoning skills, whilst emerging, were not yet well developed. The ability of students to demonstrate the integration of ethical theory and practice appeared limited. This lack of integration may be influenced by the fact that few field educators could report being exposed to formal ethical theories and ethical reasoning approaches during their own undergraduate education. Some of the more generic ethical practice skills reported by academics as being embedded throughout the speech pathology course, such as communication, team work and the seeking of professional support, were more clearly demonstrated by students. Results of this study suggest that exiting students and newly graduated speech pathologists require ongoing support in the area of professional ethical practice. More explicit embedding of the theoretical underpinnings of the ethics knowledge base throughout the curriculum may be required. To be able to support the integration of professional ethical practice in students and new graduates, speech pathologists currently practising in the field who did not receive formal ethics education during their own degree or since, may require ongoing professional development in the formal knowledge base pertaining to professional ethical practice.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the concerns, dilemmas and opportunities that teachers associated with teaching culturally diverse dances from contextual perspectives. This topic was identified as timely because of the inclusion of a separate Understanding Dance in Context Strand in The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum (New Zealand Ministry of Education, 2000). Issues surrounding how to teach, which dances to teach, and who is teaching dance from contextual perspectives, are examined throughout this investigation. Building on previous research into dance education, this inquiry aims to inform and support the development of pedagogy in the teaching of dance in schools in New Zealand. Drawing on relevant literature from dance education, historical background, theories and pedagogies are examined. Literature from a range of other fields is also reviewed, including anthropology, ethnography, educational philosophy and cultural theory. Attention is drawn to how theories from these fields impact on teaching of dance contextually, in terms of ethical treatment of the traditions of others and how theory and practice interface. An ethnographic investigation in New Zealand was designed from within an interpretive paradigm to collect data from teachers, dance educators and dance specialists. These voices are at the heart of this inquiry. The methods used to collect data were: as participant observer on an in-service dance education course; questionnaires; and focus groups. The data collected from the dance specialists and tertiary dance educators produced some contrasting perspectives to those of the teachers. Grounded theory provided a systematic process of analysing data using constant comparison. It became apparent that the theoretical and practical expectations associated with teaching dance contextually differed from teaching creative dance or teaching for skill acquisition. However, the latter teaching strategies were also associated with teaching dance contextually, in what was found to be a complex nexus of concerns, dilemmas and opportunities. Moreover, the difficulties encountered by teachers in this study, as they engaged with this nexus, resulted in some teachers not teaching dance contextually and this does not meet expectations of the Curriculum. A key finding of this inquiry is how creative discovery learning can operate in the teaching of culturally diverse dances from contextual perspectives.

Fitzgerald, Laurel Jean. "Sustainability Education in Aotearoa New Zealand:theory, practice and possibility." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Teacher Education, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9044.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainability education is a contested field in Aotearoa New Zealand, as it is in other countries. A variety of philosophical and theoretical interpretations and possibilities for practice therefore co-exist within this emerging field. This thesis develops a ‘complex perspective’ of sustainability education by exploring the way it is conceptualised in literature and the New Zealand curriculum, and interpreted in practice in the context of a New Zealand secondary school. Guided by the key contributing theories and a qualitative methodology, the thesis maps the complexity of the field from the macro- or global and international level to the micro- or local level using the reference points of theory, practice, and possibility. Developed during and in response to an intense period of social and environmental change that shows no signs of abating, the thesis comprises two interrelated components. The first and more substantial component is the literature review. This takes account of situational factors that are giving rise to different conceptions and approaches to sustainability education and to contrasting views presented in literature and curriculum. Used as an umbrella term for all forms of education with environmental and sustainability foci, ‘sustainability education’ (in whatever form it takes) stands as an admission of broad social failure and the need for substantial change. Conceptions of sustainability education range from ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD), which is advanced by the United Nations and other influential international organisations, to ‘education for sustainability’ (EfS), which has taken precedence over ‘environmental education’ (EE) in the New Zealand curriculum. The literature shows that this complex, contested, contextualised and emerging field is as much hopeful as it is critical. The qualitative case study comprises the second interrelated component of the thesis. Grounded in the real-life context of a secondary school with a distinctive approach to teaching and learning, it involves an empirical investigation of the ways in which two teachers and a diverse group of Year 9 to Year 14 students understand and practice sustainability education. This component draws on the interpretive methods of interviewing and observation to afford an empathetic and multi-perspectival view of sustainability education in practice. The case does not strive to establish ‘truth’ but rather to be open to multiple truths, realities and meanings - in a manner that is consistent with the theories of social constructionism and interpretivism in particular. It is suggested, through this study, that sustainability education cannot be confined to a stable conception or consistent framework, or approached through a programme of standardised levels and assessments. Representing a complex, multi-dimensional, dynamic and emergent concept, sustainability education may best be approached and sustained in a corresponding fashion, through multiple, critically-informed, and dialogically-linked points of entry.

The implementation of OBE has significant implications for teachers’ work; adopting an OBE approach entails reconstruction of professional knowledge and a redefinition of planning procedures, teaching approaches and assessment practices. A teacher attempting to make sense of OBE, learning outcomes, assessment standards, band levels, NQF, etc. will inevitably bring his/her worldviews, past experiences and beliefs into the process of teaching and learning, and would also need to engage with new concepts to keep track of the changes in meaning and priorities. Within this changing education scenario OBE, as an initiative, offers opportunities for new pedagogies to flourish, marking a departure from the safe haven of traditional pedagogy. Therefore a perspective on teachers’ beliefs regarding OBE can provide an alternative interpretive lens for researchers through understanding teachers’ actions and thoughts. Purpose: The aim was to examine strategies teachers employ in their classrooms in response to their beliefs about OBE. Teachers’ epistemological beliefs were explored and linked to OBE pedagogical frameworks and classroom management practices. Their belief systems were divided into three categories – the teachers’ views about OBE, mathematics knowledge, and the teaching and learning of mathematics. This study was based on the belief that conceptions are specific meanings given to phenomena, derived from different experiences involved in helping individuals make sense of their world. Furthermore, those worldviews in turn influence how new information is perceived. Methodology: The researcher adopted a qualitative exploratory design. The method of choice for this study was a combination of elements of phenomenology and ethnography. Nineteen teachers were interviewed and observed. The sample was drawn from two former Model C schools and three township schools. Data were analysed qualitatively. Findings: The findings confirmed that there are multiple beliefs that constitute a personal epistemology. Therefore, to investigate some unique entities of the belief system such as OBE requires examining the broader belief system. The majority of teachers responded to OBE implementation with uncertainty, anger, frustration and anxiety. In the absence of certainty about OBE and faced with a myriad of classroom iv challenges, teachers relied on their experience to make decisions regarding what was important to know, they drew on their own personal teaching theories more than what they thought about OBE to make judgments of learning processes. This study concludes that the link between teachers’ beliefs, conceptualisation of OBE and teaching practice is weak. Their beliefs about the nature of mathematics knowledge, teaching and learning mathematics had stronger connections with, and represented the basis for teachers’ pedagogical purpose behind their preferred teaching practice.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The lack of theory-practice integration has a long-standing history in nursing education due to many factors and causes. It is continuously indicated in research studies that there is no easy or perfect solution. The causes for this theory-practice gap seem to be in the theoretical and/or clinical environment. In literature teaching methods are identified as one of the most important causes of the theory-practice gap. In view of the informal feedback received from nurse educators and nursing managers it was necessary to investigate the lack of theory-practice integration. The aim of the study was thus to explore in which respects current teaching methods utilised by nurse educators at a higher education institution comply or do not comply with teaching methods suggested in literature as essential for theory-practice integration. An exploratory descriptive research design was used to investigate the nature of the teaching methods utilised by nurse educators facilitating theoretical learning. Questionnaires were sent to nurse educators and student nurses registered for the Diploma in General Nursing Science programme. The questionnaire that mainly consisted of closed questions was used to collect and analyse the data. The data were generated at four learning sites of a higher education institution. The validity of the results was verified by an observer in the field for which a structured checklist was used. Results indicated that a wide spectrum of teaching methods were utilised by the nurse educators and that the student nurses had limited internet access at the learning centres. Eight (8) teaching methods, complying with teaching methods identified by literature as essential to enhance theorypractice integration, were used. However, it was evident that formal lectures were overused. It raises concerns as this method does not comply with teaching methods essential to enhance theory-practice integration. In fact, it limits the students’ ability to develop critical thinking and is seen as one of the possible causes of the theory-practice gap. Feedback relating to the teaching aids used showed that the data projector with PowerPoint slides, whiteboard and textbooks were the three teaching aids used most frequently. According to literature, the overuse of textbooks is generally viewed as the starting point of the theory-practice gap. The results of this study imply that an increased awareness and training of nurse educators regarding their teaching methods may increase their teaching and facilitation skills. It seems to be the nurse educator’s responsibility to ensure that teaching methods are used that are essential to enhance theory-practice integration and it is the responsibility of management at any higher educational institution to ensure that the necessary educational and information technology resources are available. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to determine whether nurse educators do indeed apply the teaching methods effectively to narrow the theory-practice gap.

Townsend, Rodwell. "The national curriculum statement on writing practice design for grades 11 and 12: implications for academic writing in higher education." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1125.

Abstract:
This study examines the role of academic literacies and academic-writing practices at two diverse South African senior secondary schools and the implications that these practices have for academic-literacy teaching in Higher Education (HE). As student academic writing is central to teaching, learning and assessment in HE, learner academic-writing standards at schools will often impact on academic success in HE. This is a concern for HE as research from South African schooling contexts have found that students from secondary schools are seldom equipped to cope with the demands of HE writing practices. In addition, the introduction of a new curriculum (National Curriculum Statement – NCS) based on the principles of the South African constitution and informed by the Bill of Rights, impacted for the first time on senior secondary schools in 2006, when it was implemented in grade 10, and HE received its first cohort of matriculants with an NCS educational background in 2009. Therefore, this study specifically explores teachers' writing practices within an NCS writing-practice design for grades 11 and 12, and assesses its current implications for academic-writing practices in HE. Critical ethnography was selected as the primary methodology as it is concerned with multiple perspectives and explores local-practice contexts. Therefore, it provides a holistic understanding of the complexity of writing practices by examining the participants' writing-practice perceptions, observing their teaching practices and analysing their written responses or feedback to first and final drafts. The data/study sample consisted of three grades 11 and one grade 12 English Home Language and English First Additional Language teachers as well as selected learners from two secondary schools in the Port Elizabeth district. The data was collected by means of classroom observations, teacher interviews and learner samples of academic writing. Although this study focused on the teaching of academic writing by the four teachers, literacy understandings were also explored by describing what literacy practices subjectively meant to the four teachers by determining the meanings they collectively and individually gave to dominant literacy practices in academic writing, especially feedback practices in text production. A detailed examination of the new NCS requirements suggest that it offers an understanding of knowledge as a social construct, advocates a multiple literacies approach to teaching and learning, and allows for a process approach to cognitively-demanding writing which takes cognisance of the rhetorical, social and cultural dimensions of literacy. Collectively, the ASs in LO3 reflect a process approach to writing, from planning, drafting, feedback, revision to presentation of the final text. It also considers the specific rhetorical dimensions of purpose, audience, and context. Therefore, these NCS writing practices should benefit learners advancing to HE. This study argues that if teachers in secondary schools were to adhere more closely to the NCS's LO3 and its ASs implementation guidelines, learners would be better prepared to cope with HE academic-writing requirements. Instead, the study found that the teachers tended to reduce writing practices to the mastery of discrete sets of technical skills with a focus on surface features of language like spelling and grammar. In addition, the study found that when the teachers' perceptions of the NCS and their own classroom-writing practices were explored, they tended to resist a social-practice approach to academic writing, and, as a result, mostly adapted LO3 of the NCS rather than adopting it as intended by the policy-makers. Similar to other South African studies, this study concludes that teachers remain largely rooted in their autonomous teaching practices favouring traditional methods with which they are familiar over curricula policies which could emancipate learners toward levels of achievement which would better prepare them for both HE and the world of work. In other words, teachers in the sample tend to conserve their traditional methodologies which are predominantly informed by deficit views of learners‟ problems, selectively including new policy requirements which create the impression of compliance, rather than fundamentally altering their approaches pedagogically in the classroom and their academic-writing practices in particular.

Abstract:
Over the years, graduate medical education has changed in order to create learning environments to best prepare physicians. The present system of residency and hospital affiliation was the model adopted to give students opportunities for active learning along with lecture and observation. This study investigated the varied ways residents learn the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for family practice. A within-site case study approach was used since this was a study of peer learning among family practice residents at a single community based hospital in a university affiliated network having an opposed program. A purposeful and typical case sampling strategy was used so that key participants provided information about their experiences with how the peer interactions among residents contributed to learning. The study had a sample of 11 residents progressing through this program and each participant was interviewed twice. Additional data were collected through observations of the morning and teaching rounds, an observation of the orientation session for new residents, and from program requirement documents. Each interview, observation, and document underwent content analysis for the identification of any emerging central themes or patterns and patterns were grouped according to recurring categories. Of particular interest were the themes that flowed from the interview and observation analysis for each resident class and the application of these themes to major learning theories. Matrix displays of themes that emerged between resident classes, of themes within the same resident class, and of the themes demonstrating relevant learning theories were developed and presented. Data analysis revealed themes categorized by learning process, achievement, identity as a physician, competence, and program improvement. The learning process consisted of various strategies, peer interactions, and use of resources. The within class analysis found varying degrees of strategies and peer interactions for each of the classes and the between class analysis found a progression of strategies, skills, achievement, identity, and changing peer interactions. Themes analyzed according to major learning theories demonstrated similarities to activity theory, social learning theory, and communities of practice. This study revealed that peer mentoring, coaching, and learning occurred within the context of a community of practice.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As a novice teacher I experienced many difficulties and obstacles in my first two years of teaching in a South African context. This experience was further disempowering as there were no support programmes like induction or mentoring programmes in place to support the transition from student to teacher and to grow professionally. It thus became my concern to ascertain the possibilities of professional development through reflective practice, to highlight some of the strategies which might bring about change, however imperfect, and to consider the human agency in all of this. The focus of the study is particularly on reflective practice as a potential process of professional development and a self-support mechanism for novice teachers. It thus is a study of processes to encourage and maintain a teacher’s professional development. I tell of my lived experience as a novice teacher through narrative inquiry. The data comprises of journal entries and field notes which were constructed from conversations and observations. Main ideas were developed within my narrative to analyse the narrated text. Four main themes emerged from my global analysis of data. These are: lack of support; lack of an induction programme; engaging in self-support activities to grow professionally; and the importance that agency plays in this process of personal and professional development. Based on this study of my personal experience as a novice teacher, it would seem that becoming a reflective practitioner could indeed contribute to a sense of empowerment and serve as a support mechanism in personal and professional development.

The research analyzes the contributions of the curriculum of the college/university training years of female and male teachers for the teaching practice with gender and sexuality in the Basic Education. Gender and sexuality as relational categories (BENEDICT, 2014; Butler, 2013 BAY, 1997), built material and discursively, take the critical multiculturalism (McLaren, 1997) as a theoretical and methodological approach which places the material and linguistic inequalities, pointing to the possibilities of transformation. The curriculum, based on critical and post-critical theories, signals to the power relations and tensions surrounding the site and the meanings of gender and sexuality in the field of education. The Pedagogy Course of CAA / UFPE and two schools of Basic Education constitute the empirical field of research; the main subjects are the female student-teachers, by setting the relationship between college/university training and professional performance. Therefore, participant observation is the central procedure of production and data collection, whereas the documentary research, questionnaire and interviews are complementary procedures. Through Content Analysis, in the thematic perspective (Bardin, 1977), the data foreground that gender and sexuality are present in the prescribed and experienced curriculum of training as well as in the teaching pedagogical practice of Basic Education. From programmed approaches and quotas, gender and sexuality pervade the experienced education curriculum in the years of training, signaling to the importance of deconstruction of binary and heteronormative standards in education. In schools, gender and sexuality materialize in mixed groups and in co-educational practices, in spontaneous interactions and cultural artifacts, permeated by silencings and interventions. The advancement of teaching pedagogical practices in relation to groupings and co-educational practices, as well as the limits in relation to the dealing with gender violence and the trivialization of sexuality, point out that the training curriculum contributes with theoretical foundations for the work with these differences. On the other hand, there is the need to be intensified in the training the work with the school experiences and teaching of the female teachers as formative content to its resignification in the practice, given the difficulty of the contribution to the attainment of knowledge syntheses. Tensions between resistance and demands in the heart of society regarding gender and sexuality in education, run through the boundaries of teaching work, accounting for challenges which demand institutional linkages, continuing development and relations between the dimensions of institutional pedagogical practice (teaching-targeted, student-oriented, managerial and gnosiological).

Abstract:
The National Curriculum Statement (2002), in line with the South African Constitution (1996), views human rights, inclusivity and social justice as priorities in all learning areas of the curriculum. However, a document such as the Manifesto on Values, Education and Democracy (2001) illustrates the complexities of addressing this in practice. One of the reasons is that there are misconceptions about how the concept of 'human rights' should be interpreted in the educational realm. This study sets out to explore how primary school learners understand human rights teaching-and-learning (from a moral and value stance) and what factors influence this. The intention is to rethink and redefine human rights teaching-and-learning from a learner's perspective as well as to investigate the notion that regards human rights as 'misunderstood'. This research offers a new perspective on human rights in that it focuses on primary school learners. Therefore this study will provide another lens through which to consider human rights teaching-and-learning in classroom practice. A literature study and empirical research have been undertaken to investigate how learners understand human rights teaching-and-learning. The literature study explores ontological, epistemological and methodological perspectives of human rights teaching-and-learning. Qualitative observation, written narratives and focus-group interviews formed the bases of this empirical research. Ongoing triangulation is used to ensure that the research findings are valid and trustworthy. It seems that primary school learners do have an understanding of human rights teaching-and-learning, which is characterized by an emphasis on legal rights and the contextualisation of human rights within South African, value and educational contexts. Educational and societal factors are two of the factors that influence this understanding. It is clear that learners' understanding of human rights teaching-and-learning is not one-dimensional. However, there are certain ontological ambiguities in the views that learners hold of the significance of human rights teaching-and-learning -both within and beyond the curriculum. An indication of this is that learners' responses reveal that they are often uncertain about why they have to learn about human rights and the contexts and/or learning areas (other than Life Orientation) in which human rights teaching-and-learning should take place. Recommendations highlight the need to gain a better understanding of classroom practices so that teaching-and-learning can infuse a culture of human rights; to acknowledge that human rights teaching-and-learning should be more flexible; to use an implicit way of generating an understanding of human rights; to make human rights teaching and learning in classroom practice more authentic; and to consider 'a human rights beyond the curriculum approach'. This study also identifies areas in which further research should be done.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Nursing)
Literature attest that holistic approach to care is the best way to ensure that all human needs, including spiritual needs are taken care of. As such holistic approach to care accepts the notion of "wholeness" nature of the patient. However, in practice patient's holistic needs, which are essential for optimum health, are not routinely addressed when practicing nursing. This implies that regardless of the nurses doing their best to attend to patient's health needs, patients still do not achieve their required optimum health. Furthermore, in the face of good nursing education programmes, attempts to meet the patient's care needs as advocated, a gap still exists in rendering nursing services that truly promote health in a holistic manner. Confusion regarding the scope and holistic nature of nursing, relates not only to nursing organisations having failed to define nursing with clarity concerning the spiritual dimension of care; but they have also not succeeded in implementing nursing that is truly holistic. In this study, it is argued that where spiritual care aspects in nursing remain at the periphery, holistic nursing cannot be truly attained. According to Burkhardt and Hogan promoting one's spirituality within a nursing paradigm can be one way to promote and optimise health, particularly in response to illness. In view of the existing gap between teaching-learning of spiritual care and espoused theory of holistic nursing, a need to develop a theory that would guide and assist nurse educators and nursing students in the teaching and learning of spiritual care was imperative. The aim of this research was to generate a practice theory for teaching-learning of spiritual care in the undergraduate nursing programme at a higher education institution by answeringthe research question "how can a practice theory for teaching-learning of spiritual care in the undergraduate nursing programme at a higher education institution in the Western Cape be generated? Ethical procedures were applied in accordance to stipulations of the University Research Ethics Committee. The credibility of the study was ensured by application of Guba's model of trustworthiness for qualitative data.

Abstract:
The educational system in Kuwait is intended to provide primary and secondary students with required skills in order to operate in the technical careers commonly undertaken. However, mathematics education lags significantly behind other countries in Kuwait. In the 1997 and 2008 TIMMS international studies of primary and secondary mathematics achievement, Kuwait ranked near the bottom on almost all scores. Thus, improving mathematics education in Kuwait is an issue of serious concern. This research focuses on the question of whether mathematics teaching and learning in Kuwaiti primary schools (grade 4) can be improved through the use of computer-based tools for practice drills and constructive mathematics play. An observational intervention was used in a classroom of 24 children, where students took a pre-test for mathematics achievement, then engaged in a series of exercises through the term and were retested at the end of the term. This was accompanied by a series of in-services and teacher interviews that were conducted within the school, in order to discover attitudes about mathematics teaching and learning and to train teachers in the suggested approaches and techniques. A combined qualitative and quantitative approach included analysis of test scores and interviews with teachers and students. The overall outcomes of the study did show a slight increase in mathematics achievement scores. However, more importantly it showed an improvement in children's and teacher's attitudes to mathematics learning related to the introduction of constructive play activities (derived from the Cambridge University N-RICH program and selected for students based on level of achievement) Overall, the importance of this study is that it provides pragmatic information for Kuwaiti teachers and curriculum designers on improving mathematics teaching and learning.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about the experience of teaching adult literacy in a further education college under the auspices of the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum (ALCC) between the years 2002 to 2005. A universal description was derived from the perspectives of five college lecturers, called co-researchers, who volunteered a vivid description of their individual experience of teaching adult literacy in this context. These descriptions were reduced, in terms of volume, and the resulting data created a single universal description of the teaching experience. The modified phenomenological reduction and analysis process used was based on an approach created by Moustakas (1994) to answer the fundamental research question: 'What -was it like for you?' In answering this question, this study presents the crux of what constitutes the qualities or nature of the professional experience, and brings to the fore, the meaning contained within it. This study identified that the qualities within teaching in further education are very much under researched and that rarer still is research from a phenomenological perspective about teaching under the auspices of the ALCC. This study sought to fill this gap where it found that the introduction of the ALCC brought with it a complexity in its defining of adult literacy as a set of functional skills within a socio-economic context, and that its use galvanized the humanism of co-researchers and their sense of moral obligation. It further found that the ALCC became what unified the co-researchers professionally and instigated a teaching culture in which some consideration was given to the social implications of what they taught. Teaching under the auspices of the ALCC thus became the platform of possibility from which institutions and central government can nurture the culture's need for support, and from which teachers themselves can question their role.

Abstract:
This study examines the concept of ‘difficulty and challenge’ in curriculum, teaching and learning of young learners. It draws its data from the inschool and out-of-school experiences and perspectives of high-attaining, ‘gifted and talented’ pupils, mainly of late primary-school and early secondary-school age, and from their educators. The study is based on a largely interpretative paradigm and draws from ideas of grounded theory. It treats with caution the notion that such a study will produce a ‘theory’, as advocated in much of the grounded-theory literature, setting out instead to produce a ‘persuasive perspective’ on its theme. Data are largely qualitative in nature, analysed through coding and grouping of principal concepts and sub-themes. Some quantitative data are used to substantiate the analysis. The investigation’s sources of data were decided upon as the study progressed in response to the growing conceptualisation of its theme. Its beginnings were with pupils in out-of-school ‘Advanced Learning Centres’ (ALCs) for gifted and talented pupils, progressing to gifted and talented pupils and their teachers in primary schools, then to summer schools organised for older pupils by the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth. Finally, specialist teachers and initial teacher-training tutors provided more in-depth consideration of the topic. Data came from a survey of ALC pupils across England, from observations of classroom practice using a specially designed observation framework, and from group and individual interviews. Using the data, a visual configuration of difficulty and challenge is constructed in the study, and a glossary of key terms and their definitions is built up in stages. The implications of these outcomes for educational practice are considered. The study contributes to pedagogical understanding and development of this important aspect of the teaching and learning of gifted and talented pupils and informs pedagogical thinking relating to all learners.

Abstract: This research had as its central theme the impact that the implementation of the Curriculum the State of São Paulo for Physical Education (CEF-SP) has had on daily activities of teachers of this discipline. The objective was to understand how a teacher of this school system builds their practice from the official curriculum guidelines for the discipline. For this, we adopted the execution of an ethnographic case study, referenced by the definition of "thick description" proposed by Clifford Geertz. The fieldwork took place in a school in Rio Claro, in the course of 16 weeks, being held 25 days of classroom observation and two semi-structured interviews with the teacher. Throughout the observations was possible to follow the dynamics developed in the classroom by the teacher how this integrated curriculum guidelines to their teaching practice. The interviews sought to address issues related to their personal and professional life, their understanding of the curriculum documents and their justifications for actions taken in class. What we found was that the teacher developed a pedagogical practice from the curriculum in which she not only "applied" the guidelines suggested in the Teacher's Notebook (base document for your practice), but promoted, through a process of interaction with the curriculum, significant changes to adopt, adapt and present proposals to delete it, and develop activities and experiences not covered in official documents. This process of interaction with the curriculum we have called "alternative curriculum". Based on the approach of teaching knowledge was recognized that in building their alternative curriculum the teacher relies primarily (though not exclusively) on their experiential knowledge, built up over their pre-professional socialization (family relationship and basic education) and professional in practice of teaching and peer relations. This knowledge favoring the emergence of experiential certainties and evaluation of other knowledge (such as curriculum EFC-SP), which makes the adoption of the curriculum for teacher Lolla be given by a process of "critical recovery" in the curriculum guidelines are evaluated and retranslated based on certainties built on experience and teaching practice, giving rise to its alternative curriculum. Given what was seen in the study, one realizes that the curriculum implementation has caused modifications sensitive to educational practice of Physical Education in São Paulo schools. It is suggested that further studies that take into account the complex dynamics of everyday school life are realized and that the experiential knowledge are contemplated in view of the centrality assume that the construction of pedagogic practice. Finally, affirmed the importance of teachers being recognized as producers of a specialized and practical, which needs to be recognized and valued

Abstract:
This study establishes a framework for the practice and the acquisition of mathematical knowledge. The natures of mathematics and rituals/ritual-like activities are examined compared and contrasted. Using a four-fold typology of core features, surface features, content features and functions of mathematics it is established that the nature of mathematics, its practice and the acquisition is typologically similar to that of rituals/ ritual-like activities. The practice of mathematics and its acquisition can hence be metaphorically compared to that of rituals/ritual-like activities and be enriched by the latter. A case study was conducted using the ritual metaphor at two levels to introduce and teach a topic within the current year eleven West Australian Geometry and Trigonometry course. In the first level, instructional materials were written using a ritual-like mentor-exemplar, exposition, replicate and extrapolate model (through the use of specially organised examples and exercises) based on the approaches of several mathematics text book authors as they attempted to introduce a topic new to the West Australian mathematics curriculum.
In the second level, the classroom instruction was organised using a ritual-like pattern with direct exemplar mentoring and exposition by the teacher followed by replication and extrapolation from the students. Embedded within this ritual-like process was the personal (and communal) engagement with each student vis-a-vis the establishment of the relationships between the referent concepts, procedures and skills. This resulted in the emergence of solution behaviours appropriate to specific tasks imitating and extrapolating the mentored solution behaviours of the teacher. In determining the extent to which the instruction, mentoring and acquisition was successful, each student's solution 'behaviour was compared "topographically" with the expected solution behaviour for the task at various critical points to determine the degree of congruence. Marks were allocated for congruence (or removed for incongruence), hence a percentage of congruence was established. The ritual-like model for the teaching and acquisition of mathematical knowledge required agreement with all stake-holders as to the purpose of the activity, expert knowledge on the part of the teacher, and within a classroom context requires students to possess similar levels of prerequisite mathematical knowledge.
This agreement and the presence of an expert practitioner, provides the affirmation and security that is inherent in the practice of rituals. The study concluded that there is evidence to suggest that some aspects of mathematical ability are wired into the cognitive structures of human beings providing support to the hypothesis that some aspects of mathematics are discovered rather than created. The physical origin of mathematical abilities and activities was one of the factors used in this study to establish an isomorphism between the nature and practice of mathematics with that of rituals. This isomorphism provides the teaching and learning of mathematics with a more robust framework that is more attuned to the social nature of human beings. The ritual metaphor for the teaching and learning of mathematics can then be used as a framework to determine the relative adequacies of mathematics curricula, mathematics textbooks and teaching approaches.

Abstract:
In 2007, started in the State of São Paulo a curriculum reform with aspirations to increase the quality of education in schools. Since 2008 and 2009, come into play, respectively, Teachers Book and Students Book, important elements of the new curriculum policy, which have the role to guide and enrich the teaching practice of teachers in public schools by suggesting learning situations. The objective of this research was to identify how Biology teachers evaluated and incorporated the curriculum notebooks in their teaching practice. This study had an exploratory, descriptive and qualitative approach. For data collection it used a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. For the analysis of the questionnaire data, it used descriptive statistics, and for interviews, it used content analysis proposed by Bardin (2008), aided by software Alcest. The survey results indicate that Biology teachers had evaluated positively the following aspects of curriculum notebooks: conceptual and pedagogical formatting, strategies to build the knowledge and the respect of ethics and citizenship. Also it indicates that teachers are applying the notebooks often, although there are some difficulties in the application: there are not textbooks that brings the same sequence of content; they consider that some learning situations are decontextualized about the reality of their schools and they also criticize the selection and sequencing of content. The sense that teachers have about notebooks is varied, some expect that the notebooks become educational handouts, rather than continue as curriculum guides. Others highlight the positive effect of working with a curriculum guides, as they stimulate the acquisition of knowledge and improvement of its educational activities. We conclude that the notebooks are part of an educational context that is in transition, where some teachers remain connected to the traditional teaching models and others seek to the reconstruction of their practices.

Abstract:

This inquiry investigated four design educators’ perspectives and beliefs of global competence teaching and learning, and aimed to inform effective global competence curricula planning and instruction across disciplines. The literature uncovered multiple reasons to warrant design educator reflections: (a) similarities among global competence and design thinking characteristics, (b) design education accreditation emphasis on globally oriented standards, and (c) design thinking as a resource to improve practices across disciplines. Accordingly, the inquiry employed a qualitative design and a multiple case-study approach. Data collection methods included: (a) interviews, (b) image artifacts, and (c) researcher reflective memos. A comparative analysis used systematic coding to reveal core theme statements grounded in the data.

The inquiry revealed all four design educators believed: (a) active learning and information gathering activities were effective ways to teach global competence, (b) interaction with others from different backgrounds contributed to global competence development, (c) a formal education experience changed the ways they view the world and empathize with others, (d) the critique was an effective global competence teaching and learning tool, and (e) the role of perception processes fostered ability to recognize qualities of other people and places. All four design educators’ image artifacts represented meanings and interpretations of global competence as human-centered, and expressed physical connection. Ultimately, three overarching discoveries emerged: (a) design educators use mindshifts to develop global competence, (b) design educators are makers of their global competence development, and (c) design educators are mature motivators of global competence development.

The inquiry concluded with a model for design education global competence development grounded in the data and the literature. Implications for action connected to three higher education teaching and learning areas: (a) mindfulness, (b) the maker movement, and (c) mindsets. Overall, the four design educators’ information-rich narratives and practical curricula design applications presented in this inquiry aim to encourage other educators to relate the global dimensions of their own disciplines to current teaching and research practice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this formative experiment (Reinking & Bradley, 2008) was to describe the stages of development of an online platform that cultivated the growth of an online community of practice for teaching professionals. One hundred and forty-eight elementary school professionals participated in this study. Relying primarily on qualitative data, an iterative process of data gathering, analysis, and reflection was used prior to, during, and after the implementation of the intervention, LiteracyGrows.org, to describe performance and determine progress toward the pedagogical goal. Qualitative data were coded for recurring themes derived from the following sources: interview data, user-profile information, Google Analytics, email correspondence and open-rates, webinar archives, heat map data, and a researcher reflection journal. Micro-analysis revealed that the success of the intervention was related to the usability and sociability of the platform. It was easy to navigate and appealed to teachers as a social networking tool that was only for education professionals where they could share information and attend live or archived webinars to extend learning. Reflection on a macro-level was used as a tool to further explore LiteracyGrows.org as a model of professional development. Specifically, how it was situated within the larger landscape of professional development and what it offered in terms of alignment between learning theory, epistemology, and model of professional development and communication, worldview, and knowledge. These constructs were important factors to consider in creating a platform for meaningful dialogue and professional growth to take place. LiteracyGrows.org provides the foundation for future research to further explore how online professional platforms can be utilized to make professional development an on-going and sustainable component of support and growth for education professionals. The growth of online professional platforms by educators will also shift the conversation of professional development further away from delivery and more toward meaningful engagement by educators as active participants in their own knowledge construction. Recommendations include the continuation of the discussion of professional development in terms of epistemological alignment. This study highlights disconnect between teachers and their professional development experiences when expectations, perceptions, and understanding of what they are engaging in for growth do not align. Furthermore, reconstructing the way professional development is embedded within practice to better engage the 21st Century teacher using up-to-date technology.
