Motumi, Knysna Teboho. "Black education in Mokwallo : a historical perspective of the period 1920-1980 / Knysna Teboho Motumi." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9737.

Abstract:
Mokwallo is the name of both the black township and a Primary School near the town of Vredefort, which is situated in one of the northern districts of the present Free State Province. This town is situated on the R721 road between Parys and Kroonstad, approximalety 126 km south of Johannesburg and 76 km north of Kroonstad. It was laid out on the farm Vischgat, which belonged to Jacobus Johannes Scheepers in 1876, and was proclaimed in 1881 and became a municipality in 1890. Since formal education became part of the present day Free State Province, many educational histories have been written on various regions of the province. Though the educational collection available on the Free State Province appears to be impressive, the focus is predominantly on the historical development, influence and meaning of white education. There are also educational histories that are located in sections of existing local histories; they normally present only a broad outline. Very little is available on the local activities and the local educational development of black townships in the Free State, like Mokwallo. The historical origin, development and educational provision of education for the black people of Mokwallo township has not yet been written. Local and regional history, of which the history of Mokwallo township forms part, has become an important part of the historians' field of study. Regional history studies the past from the local angle. It is interested in the smaller community and the activities of ordinary people in their own community. It is the study of human achievements and failures in a specific society in conjuction and in comparison with other units or groups. The study of the history of the origin, development and provision of specifically primary education for the black people of Mokwallo is in general an attempt to close that gap. Furthermore, its relevance lies in the complete history of Mokwallo in order to gain a clear indication of the extent to which Mokwallo gained from and contributed to national history. The study of the microcosm and man's place in it is an important prerequisite for a proper understanding of broader historical developments. The historical method is used to secure data. In chapter one the research is limited to an overview of the development of schooling for black people in South Africa from 1652 to 1925, with the aim of understanding the educational setting in which Mokwallo School functioned. Chapter two deals with the role and influence of joint control of the education of black people by missionary societies, the provincial administrations and the Union's government of Native Affairs from 1926 to 1950 in order to indicate their decisive role in the general education of black people on local level, with Mokwallo as case study. In the following chapter, the impact of the new dispensation in the education of the black people of Mokwallo through the passing of the controversial Bantu Education Bill in 1953 is also, amongst others, addressed. The last section is devoted to the dawn of the new era, 1961 to 1980, which was characterised by rapid and progressive development of the educational structure for the black people of South Africa, and specifically Mokwallo. In the summary conclusions are drawn from the study which, amongst others, are that colonial education of the black people lacked defined objectives with respect to administration, curriculum and financial control, mainly because its main aim was to Evangelise the black people of South Africa. The advent of the National Bantu Education system in 1954, which was designed to fit the apparent needs of the black people, also played a major role in the development of the education of black people, despite its controversy and a lack of adequate finance for the education of black people in South Africa. Regardless of the missionaries' weaknesses and shortcomings, it remains certain that they contributed to the foundation of education for the black people of Mokwallo township. In the case of Mokwallo there were no serious problems around the education of black people, as in other townships in the country. Perhaps this was a result of the absence of a secondary school for black people in Mokwallo township. Instead, there was massification of black education in Mokwallo, which enhanced the development of the black people of Vredefort and the district. On the other hand, the main focus of the education of Mokwallo was chiefly the academic development of the black people, and very little was done regarding the development of socio-cultural aspects, except in the sphere of music. Lastly, all the principals of Mokwallo School appeared to have accepted the general political and social status of Vredefort and Mokwallo township as it was at the time.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Ed. ) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013
The drafting and promulgation of education policies bring hope and an expectation to those whose interests, concerns and problems, are addressed by them. On the other hand, such policies bring confusion, uncertainty and stress to teachers who are expected to implement and put into practice prescripts of those policies. Response to the Education White Paper 6: Special Needs Education – Building an Inclusive Education and Training System (2001) and subsequent policies on inclusive education which followed, brought uncertainty to teachers and also led to some developing a negative attitude towards inclusive education. This study focused on the implementation of inclusive education in primary schools in the Lejweleputswa District of the Free State province. A literature review provided insight into the concept of inclusive education and moreover shed light on policy developments regarding learner diversity through the curriculum. An empirical investigation using a qualitative approach was conducted and data was gathered by means of focus group interviews with school-based support teams as well as a questionnaire completed by principals. Furthermore, the findings of the empirical investigation concurred, to a large degree, with the findings of the literature study. In general, it was brought to light that inclusive education is not implemented correctly in primary schools in the Lejweleputswa District. Based on certain findings, recommendations are made regarding the successful implementation of inclusive education in primary schools.

Abstract:
The Almirante Barroso Oil Terminal – TEBAR, property of Petrobrás, is located at São Sebastião Channel – CSS, which effluent is discharged through two submarine outfalls build of HDPE – High Density Polyethylene. Both of them has three risers with 0.15m of diameter and 1.5m of height, and are located between 19.15m and 25.45m of depth. The medium current velocity is between 0.40m/s and 0.60m/s to northward (NW). The effluent was sampled from April 2000 to March 2002 by Petrobrás. In this period, it was founded high concentrations of ammonia (125.5mg/L in April 2001), trespassing the limit value for emission of CONAMA 20 Resolution – Art.21 (5mg/L). The salinity of effluent is of order 52.8% at a temperature of 27.3ºC for the same period. This range of values results in a density of 1037 kg/m3. Computer modeling uses for the waste water dispersion process and the hydrodynamic profile description in water bodies is a modern tool as a decision support for the environmental agencies and for the industries in order to verify the standard water quality. Two different computer techniques are used in this present work, integral methods (software CORMIX) ), which conduct to the dilution results of the plume in the near field, and finite volume methods (software FLUENT) where its possible to analyze the effects of a variable batimetries (Nautical Map n0 1643 - Marinha do Brasil) and to consider the near and far dispersion process. Both softwares showed that effluent plume has negative buoyancy, ocurring a strong impact benthic in the vicinity area of submarine outfall. The FLUENT application permits obtain results for near-field and far-field with no restrictions of bathymetry and port discharge geometry but the computational cost is higher compared with classical software used to prevent plume dispersion from submarine outfalls and which are based in gaussian integral methods (CORMIX). In this present work, the CONAMA 20 Resolution for ammonia (C = 0,4mg/L) is attended around 15m for FLUENT and 200m for CORMIX, far from ports.

Manyama, Tebogo Lennox. "Powder characteristics and tabletting of nevirapine prepared by a novel process : a solubility and stability study / Tebogo Lennox Manyama." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8387.

Abstract:
The science of powders in the pharmaceutical industry is a specialised field and the particle size of a powder may influence its bulk performance, its tabletting properties and handling. During the synthesis process of an API, the crystal form is dependent on the solvent being used in the final stage of recrystallisation. Usually, the particle size is too large for use as is, in which case milling would be the next step in the production line-up. Milling of APIs can result in polymorphic phase transformations, contamination, and costly product losses through dust. The understanding of the physico-chemical properties of a given API is critical during the pre-development phases of dosage forms. This study investigated the feasibility of particle size reduction of nevirapine through rapid crystallisation (metastable, intermediary form IV), followed by desolvation and a subsequent phase transformation. The powder obtained by this novel method was characterised and compared with commercially available, nevirapine powder. The following properties of the two nevirapine powders were investigated: 1) Particles size and size distribution, 2) Particle shape and surface, 3) Powder flowability, using angle of repose, critical orifice diameter, Carr’s compressibility index and the Hausner ratio, and 4) Solubility and dissolution rate. Tablets were also manufactured during this study by means of wet granulation from the two nevirapine powders. The tablets were subjected to the following tablet tests: 1) Friability, 2) Crushing strength/hardness, 3) Disintegration, 4) Dissolution, and 5) Weight variation. Based on the results obtained from the powder and tablet studies, the following conclusions were reached. Nevirapine raw material may be suitable for tablet manufacturing, either through direct compression, or through a method involving processing prior to tablet compression, i.e. granulation. Novel nevirapine powder posed flowability problems and would only be suitable for use if its flow properties could be improved by a granulation process. However, novel nevirapine powder may be the preferred API, due to its properties that could aid the dissolution of the final product. The results have shown that those tablets that had been produced from the novel nevirapine powder had several advantages over those, produced from the nevirapine raw material, such as better mechanical strength and dissolution properties. This study showed that small changes in the powder characteristics could significantly affect its subsequent processing. The change in the powder properties of nevirapine had proven this statement. There were significant differences in the flowabilities and solubilities of the two nevirapine powders, as well as between their respective tablet properties. Novel nevirapine powder had poor flowability, while offering better solubility values. Its poor flowability rendered the production of tablets by direct compression practically impossible. The tablets produced from the novel nevirapine powder showed advantageous properties. Further studies are, however, recommended in order to improve the flowability of the fine, novel, nevirapine powder and to further establish its promising potential to produce effective tablets without prior milling, as is currently being practiced.

Abstract:
This study aimed to understand how the portuary space of São Sebastião was organized throughout the twentieth century, highlighting its participation in the portuary national geography. In terms of the approach, we place this study in the branch called geography of movement and transportation, in which we devote special attention to the port activity. We adopt as a fundamental premise the idea that ports, as technical objects which make possible freight transport in land-sea interface, have been and continue to be important elements for understanding the organization and production of space, especially in coastal areas, but also in the portuary hinterland. The portuary space of São Sebastião, located in the northern coast of São Paulo, was here understood as the portion of geographic space that houses the sites of the public port of São Sebastião and the maritime terminal Almirante Barroso of Petrobras (Tebar), as well as their retroarea. The first one concentrates the movement of solid bulk freight and general cargo, while the second one is specialized in liquid bulk freight (oil and derivates). The picture presented by the research, raised through field work and analysis of official statistics, as well as bibliographic review revealed that, despite the geographical proximity of these two technical objects, they engender dynamics clearly different, which can be visible, especially, when we turn our attention to the size of the cargo movement that they perform: the Tebar, occupying a prominent position on a national scale, while the public port only performs a movement with regional significance. In this sense, although composing the same portuary space, these fixos have distinct dynamics, we aimed to highlight how, together, they contribute and have contributed over time, for the production and organization of the São Sebastião space, as well as, how they make possible for us to understand the relationship that this portion of the space establish with the totality, specially concerning to the movement of goods on a national scale via maritime activity. We also tried to contribute to the understanding of how the changes that have been announced for the space in question, due to the public port expansion project and the strategic position of TEBAR in the oil discoveries in the Santos Basin (Pré-Sal), will influence its place in the Brazilian portuary geography, emphasizing the relevance of a geographical approach about transportation in Brazil.

Abstract:
The changes in the political landscape in South Africa have exacerbated major transformation of the society and all other aspects of life, including education. It is in this view that transformation of the education sector resulted in the changes within the employment relationship, as well as the psychological contract between educators and the Department of Education. This is further explained by the changes experienced in both the employer and employee's obligations. Furthermore, these changes have a tremendous influence on the degree of job satisfaction, organisational commitment, as well as an intention to quit among educators. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the employment-and psychological contract of educators in the Sedibeng West District of the Gauteng Department of Education. The measuring instruments, i.e. employer's obligations, employee's obligations, job satisfaction, organisational commitment, as well as intention to quit questionnaires, were used in the empirical study. A cross -sectional survey design was conducted among 298 educators (including school managers) in the Sedibeng West District. A response rate of 75% (224 respondents) was obtained. The results indicate a practically significant correlation coefficient of a medium effect between the employer and the employee's obligations, a negative correlation of medium effect between the employer's obligations and an employee's intention to quit, and no significant relationship between the employee's obligations and an employee's intention to quit. Furthermore, a practically significant correlation coefficient of medium effect was obtained between job satisfaction and an employee's intention to quit, and no significant relationship could be found between job satisfaction and organisational commitment. Lastly, a practically significant negative correlation of a medium effect was obtained between organisational commitment and an intention to quit. A multiple regression analysis indicates that 21% of the variance in the employee's intention to quit was predicted by both the employer and employee's obligations. Organisational commitment and job satisfaction predicted 33% of the total variance. Recommendations for the Department of Education, as well as future research were also made.

Abstract:
A study of benthic macrofauna was carried out along the São Sebastião Channel (SSC) during summer and winter of 2005. Sediment samples were undertaken (van Veen grab 0.03 m2) to chemical and biological analysis, in an area influenced by anthropogenic activities. The stations nearby the Terminal Almirante Barroso (TEBAR) oil terminal, Araçá sewage system and São Sebastião harbor showed the highest concentrations of organic matter, metals and hydrocarbons. The sediment distribution was very complex and heterogeneous, with a northward grain size increasing. The organisms collected presented correlation to the SSC sedimentary characteristics. The north stations, a high energy system, were characterized by a coarse grain size bottom and carnivorous motile species, which reflected highest abundance, richness and diversity values. The center-north stations were muddy-sand bottom and omnivorous species were observed there. The center-south stations, which are influenced by a low hydrodynamic energy, were predominated by a muddy bottom, leading to a high retention of organic and inorganic compounds. In these stations were found opportunistic deposit feeders species resulting in low abundance, richness and diversity. The sedimentary pattern (i.e. grain size) as well as their characteristics (adsortion capacity) seems to determine the macrozoobenthic community pattern in SSC.

Abstract:
The purpose is to study and test a selection of compensation variables and examine whether these factors can influence on employee cynicism. The study focuses on the personnel in three service stations in Finland that are part of Teboil’s organisation. These three stations were chosen to represent all the service station within Teboil. These stations are considered to be an appropriate pick for this study since their recent organisational changes.   This subject was considered to be interesting to study when taking into consideration the current situation in the economy. The economical recession forces many organisations to act meaning changes in the organisational structure and among the employees. Teboil improved the income effectiveness by making changes that resulted in reduction in salaries and working hours etc. In order to maintain the motivation among the employees in spite of these unfortunate changes this study examines non-monetary means to compensate people and hinder the development of cynicism, since these cases, reduction in employees’ pay checks and working hours can be assumed to be factors that affect on the cynicism level.   This particular organisation was chosen for this study because the researcher has been a part of this organisation on and off for several years and also there was a need for this kind of study in the service station area, since it was evident for the managers that some issues will raise when the cut backs will be introduced. This survey also showed the managing department’s concern about the well being of the employees in the stations. It showed that the consequences of these changes were taking into consideration and the satisfaction of the employees was very important to maintain.   The conclusion of this study is that internal as well as individual equity are the compensation factors that affect the most on cynicism. These factors comprehend the equality among all the employees, among employee and his/her co-workers (internal equity) and the equality between the input and output (individual equity). In order to maintain these important aspects equal, non-monetary compensation means are suggested. Propositions are mainly to give positive feedback regularly in order to show the appreciation and also monitor the employees and more eagerly and consistently recognize the good performance.

Abstract:
Climate change has been a topic for discussion in the IT industry. The IT (information technology) sector has been regarded as one of the contributing sectors towards climate change due to carbon emissions from IT equipment such as computers and servers. Environmental concerns are gaining incremental attention from organisations across the globe. Green IT is seen as part of the solution to this problem and has been defined and discussed by many researchers. The purpose of this study was to investigate Green IT practices that have been adopted in the NWPG (North West Provincial Government). The study focused on the three departments which fall under one central IT section in the department of the provincial treasury. A quantitative study was conducted in Mafikeng and questionnaires were distributed to collect the data and it was found that although end-users in the government sector are aware of Green IT, many still needed a lot of training on Green IT. The research concludes by suggesting strategies that might be adopted to improve IT use in the government sector.

Hawzen, Matthew. "Reading Tim Tebow: Conservative Politics and White Power in the Tea Party Era." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/8540.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2011, National Football League (NFL) quarterback Tim Tebow gripped America when the Denver Broncos reeled off a series of thrilling wins in an unlikely playoff run. Surrounding this stretch of Bronco wins was a media frenzy popularly known as “Tebow Mania”. The media explosion around Tebow can be attributed to his perplexing character and the political, cultural and social circumstances in 2011. This thesis is a critical media discourse analysis of Tebow’s sport star identity. I analyze the ways in which Tebow was described during the heights of his popularity during the 2011 NFL season. I argue that Tebow’s sport star identity naturalized ideologies of rightwing conservatism, (rightwing) conservative Christian fundamentalism and white masculinity into “common sense” notions of social life. To accomplish this, I follow cultural studies methodologies that trace Tebow’s rise to prominence within the context of The Tea Party Movement. I outline two dominant narratives that emerged during Tebow Mania to fabricate an American Dream, underdog story. While the first narrative of polarization criticizes and contemplates Tebow’s muscular Christianity, the counter-narrative repackages the polarization of Tebow by celebrating his white racial identity and conservative American values.

Abstract:
A quantitave study was done on children who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders in primary schools. The main aim was to measure IQ and to find out if there are indicators of organicity. The hypotheses of the study were as follows: (i) Children diagnosed with ADHD will obtain lower scores on IQ tests than children not diagnosed with ADHD; (ii) Children diagnosed with ADHD have some form of neurological deficit or organicity The study consisted of a sample 25 children who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders and the children who were never diagnosed with the disorder. The sample and the control group range from the age of six (6) to 13 years. Data was collected using Bendor Visual Motor Gestalt Test and Senior South African Individual Scale Revised. Descriptive Statistics. Chi-square Test and Mann-Whitney Test were used to determine the difference between the sample and the control group. The results indicated that there is significant difference between children with ADHD and the control group on both verbal and non-verbal IQ tests. This means that children who were diagnosed with ADHD scored lower on measures •of IQ. The differences may have been due to IQ. or the ADHD group was distracted enough to perform significantly worse on reading. spelling, mathematics, comprehension and written tasks. The results on the Chi-square indicated that there is a relationship between the presence and ADHD and organicity. The findings in this study will aid teachers and parents (especially in African communities), to find out more about the children who they think are just problematic children.

Abstract:
South Africa is a beautiful country that is made up by different tribes, clans and races. It is truly a rainbow nation that had struggled enormously against minority rule and it was only in 1994 that the first democratic election took place. Women were a force to reckon with during the fight against apartheid and during the political negotiations that took place prior to the first democratic election. Their involvement in the negotiations led to policies and frameworks that were meant to ensure gender equality and the promotion of the rights of all women in South Africa irrespective of race and creed. Women, especially black women, had suffered a great deal during apartheid as they had to deal with the constraints placed against them by the minority regime. They also had to deal with constraints placed against them by by-products of patriarchy at home and in the society. As a result of this women wanted to ensure that the new dispensation was sensitive and aware of their needs. They wanted the new government to ensure gender equality. They stealthily fought for recognition and the right to be heard during the negotiations. Patriarchy played its hand during these negotiations as many male union members held the view that women need not be involved in these negotiations, let alone call for an addition of terms to the negotiations. Despite this, women persevered and gender sensitive policies and laws were crafted. Under the new government South Africa has gained a reputation as a country that is committed to the promotion of gender equality. Its domestic laws and foreign policy show that it is intent on safeguarding gender equality and has a great disdain to any country, person or entity that violates women. It has established proactive national gender frameworks, allows fair discrimination as a way of advancing women, and has equality courts as well as sexual offences courts. However, despite this, South Africa is having grave difficulties in attaining a gender balanced society and furthermore she is besieged by high levels of gender based violence. Women are still exposed to human rights violations and inequalities. This study argues that the reason why South Africa is faced with these grave challenges is because it is a patriarchal society that is divided along gender lines. There is an emphasis on the difference between masculinity and femininity. Men are still seen as the dominant and women as inferior. Patriarchy is a permanent force in South Africa. It is a cause of grave concern as in most cases it hinders the implementation of policies and acts. It also hinders the carrying out of court orders such as the eviction and protection orders. The majority of women, as compared to men, are relegated to low income employment. They are also expected to perform domestic chores and the rearing of their children. Violence against women in South Africa is immense and this is despite the availability of laws and machineries that are meant to protect women. This study argues that patriarchy is the main catalyst of this problem. It breeds and legitimizes all violations and discrimination against women. It teaches male South Africans what it means to be a real man, how a real man is expected to act, what privileges are in store when they act like real men and punishments for any person especially women who contravene these expectations. It also teaches South African women what it means to be real women how a real woman is expected to act, what privileges are in store when they act like real women and punishments for contravening these expectations. Due to this fact gender inequality is difficult to eradicate and is still a problem nineteen years after gaining freedom.

Motlhabane, Tebogo Gladys Kgaugelo. "Critical assessment of the MEDUSA gamma ray detection system for radon flux measurement on a tailings dam / Tebogo Gladys Kgaugelo Motlhabane." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/11321.

Full text
Abstract:
Worldwide measurement of radon flux on mine tailing dams has been performed using various instruments. Some of the methods used in South Africa are electrets, alpha tracks, accumulator cans etc. Although these techniques and methods have been used for many years, a number of shortcomings are still evident. The major shortcomings are that, the methods lack spatial representivity that is, they only measure the radon flux at a point where they' are placed and not the whole site in that way, the spatial variation is not shown in a site which is not homogeneous. Another shortcoming is that, they do not show seasonal variation and some have a back diffusion problem, and the time required for the result to be known is too long. For· example it takes several days for electrets to gather sufficient information required, yet it is a single point result. This makes it difficult to steer the measurement. Furthermore, the moisture and atmospheric pressure on the mine dump influence some of the measurements. The above shortcomings led to the investigation of a new· technique based on gamma ray spectrometry to quantitatively assess the radon flux from the mine tailings dam. The system is called Multi Element Detector for Underwater Sediment Activity (MEDUSA). Initially, this technique was uniquely designed to measure the radioactivity on the sea floor where it proved to be successful. The major focus of this research study was, therefore, to critically assess the MEDUSA gamma ray detector system for measurement of radon flux on a tailings dam. The process of determining the radon flux in this work involved field measurements using MEDUSA and laboratory measurements using Hyper Pure Germanium (HPGe} detector. The laboratory measurements were for correcting the field measurements. The HPGe has better advantage over MEDUSA in terms of resolution and this means that the gamma ray energy peaks have better visibility than on the MEDUSA. The field measurements on the tailings dam were done using the MEDUSA mounted on a 4x4 vehicle, and simultaneously sample points were identified and samples collected. The samples were measured for specific activity in the laboratory using gamma spectrometer with HPGe detector. These measurements enabled the determination of a factor that was used to calculate the activity of radium in the field. This activity was found to have an average of 309 Bq.kg"1 with data range of 60 -540 Bq.kg-1.A radon flux equation was then derived and used to calculate the radon flux on the field. Based on the radium content, the radon flux was calculated to average about 0.105 ± 0.023 Bq.m-2 .s-1 The results are within the same range as the previous flux measurement on the same tailings dam but with better statistics. This research work has demonstrated that the MEDUSA can be adapted for radon flux determination from tailings dam. The method promises to address some of the key shortcomings of existing techniques and the usefulness of this method can be extended to measuring radioactivity on contaminated sites for rehabilitation purposes.

Mabeleng, Tebogo Joyce. "The effect of performance appraisal system on rewards and self-efficacy beliefs in a South African utility company / Tebogo Joyce Mabeleng." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15380.

Full text
Abstract:
The research study was conducted to investigate the effects of a performance appraisal system, rewards and self-efficacy beliefs in a utility company in South Africa. The study was motivated by the incessant challenges raised by employees against the way performance appraisal and rewards are conducted and awarded in the utility company. The scholarship that was consulted for this study included research articles, magazines, newspapers, company reports, books, citations from reputable sources and the Internet. These sources provided the arguments for and against the areas of a performance appraisal system, rewards and self-efficacy beliefs in the knowledge economy. A quantitative research methodology was used in this study where the questionnaire was the main data collection instrument. The quantitative research methodology was motivated by the nature and type of data collected, data collection instrument and the research paradigm. Data were collected from geographically dispersed locations and this would not have been possible to collect large volumes of data had an interview been used. The findings from the study were analysed and presented with the use of statistical packages. The findings were discussed and presented in chapter four of the study, where it was shown that performance appraisal systems were important in organisations as they create opportunities for the supervisor to know the weaknesses or strengths of his/her subordinates. Rewards were used as part of incentives to motivate employees to perform better. The study established that employees possessing high self-efficacy were bound to perform higher than those with low self-efficacy. The study established that there was a relationship between performance appraisals, rewards and self-efficacy.

Ramotshwane, Tebogo Stanely. "The extent of anthelmintic Resistance on Nematodes in communally grazed sheep and goats in a Semi-Arid area of North-west Province (RSA) / Tebogo Stanely Ramotshwane." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/14781.

Full text
Abstract:
A survey was conducted to investigate the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance of nematodes in communally grazed sheep and goat herds in the Zeerust area of the North-West Province, Republic of South Africa. The fecal egg count reduction test (FECR%) tests were used to assess the sheep and goat small holder farmers. Efficacy of albendazole, ivermectin and closantel was done on both the treatment and control animals. Anthelmintic efficacy of 80% was considered a threshold for anthelmintic resistance. The FECR% showed that all drugs tested more than 80% effective in most instances, but there were some notable exceptions. For instance in sheep ivermectin and closantel were 78% and 7 1% effective respectively. [n goats, albendazole was 78% and ivermectin was 76% effective. A significant reduction (P0.05) except with few drugs. The occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in the small holder sheep and goat farming sector is a cause of concern. Steps should therefore be taken by policy makers to prevent its further spread and to avoid the development of a situation as on commercial sheep farms where resistance is rampant.
