Abstract:

Abstract:
Analyses the objectives and proposals of information organisation developed by the Bibliographic Movement, and indicates its influence in Information Science. This exploratory research, accomplished through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis, investigates in the context of modernity the ideas of Bibliographic Movement exponents Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald, H. G. Wells, John Cotton Dana, and Watson Davis. The Bibliographic Movement was characterized by its plurality, and aimed to respond to modernity\'s effects in the information world. The movement attributed to information the potentiality of individual transformation. Therefore, it changed the focus of information services from preservation to access, and pursued the organisation of collections according to its contents. The development of technology made the Bibliographic Movement exponents emphasise the application of new technologies to the process of information dissemination in order to facilitate and accelerate it. Information Science inherited its social role partially from the Bibliographic Movement, and aims at organising information so that it can be accessed. Information Science also shares with the movement the perspective of employing high technology to disseminate information. The Zeitgeist that gave rise to the Bibliographic Movement led to a common set of ideas and allowed the elaboration of similar proposals for the organisation of information. However, it is not discarded the probability of mutual influence between the individuals analysed. Despite its historical specificity the Bibliographic Movement shares with Information Science modern ideas and its relation to culture. It is concluded that the current information culture and the information culture of the Bibliographic Movement have differences, notwithstanding, they are entwined cultures and many of their problems are similar and need similar solutions

Willshire, Catherine. "Tear dynamics : tear osmolarity and reflex features of the lacrimal functional unit." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2017. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/704072/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is tear dynamics and the regulation of tear secretion by the Lacrimal Functional Unit (LFU), a collection of functions that control tear secretion and maintain a healthy ocular surface. Tear secretion was assessed with the Schirmer test and tear osmolarity (tOsm), in standardised environmental conditions achieved using a controlled environment chamber (CEC). The experiments involved normal and dry eye disease (DED) subjects, including Sjögren Syndrome DED. A novel approach to sheathing the Schirmer strip was tested for the first time in a regulated range of relative humidities achieved in the CEC. This was designed to highlight an artefact of measurement, and free the test from its dependence on ambient conditions. A period of evaporative suppression, achieved innovatively by eye closure, was shown to drive tOsm down, in normal and DED subjects, to a basal level that fell within the range of plasma osmolarity. This basal tear osmolarity value could be used as a non-invasive measure of systemic dehydration, particularly of use in a care home setting and as a reference against which to gauge the severity of DED in an individual. Using the sheathed Schirmer strip the existence of _cross-connections' in humans was investigated for the first time using unilateral anaesthesia in an attempt to answer the question of whether afferent corneal inputs from one eye may have some influence on the lacrimal output of the fellow eye. Previously only studies involving animals had reported positive findings in this area. The relative contributions of each eye to the reflex tear response are relevant in unilateral trigeminal sensory loss cases since sensory input from the healthy eye could reinforce tear secretion of the affected fellow eye. Lastly, an experiment was designed to strengthen our understanding of the mechanism of the LFU in providing a compensatory response in desiccating conditions. This approach differed from previous studies as it included both normal and DED subjects and involved creating a sensory blockade using topical anaesthesia to increase the stress level experienced by the LFU.

Abstract:
Purpose: Assess the relationship between tear film drying and sensation between blinks. Methods: MATLAB sampled a slitlamp video camera, a potentiometer and a microphone while subjects kept one eye open for as long as possible. 23 subjects rated the intensity of the ocular sensation while video and voice data were collected simultaneously. The tear drying on the cornea was measured. Results: The sensation was triphasic. Two linear functions described the latter 2 parts of the data (r ≥ 0. 95). The correlation between TBUT and the elbow in the time-discomfort function was 0. 72. Extent of tear film drying was linearly correlated to time (median correlation = 0. 88). The correlation between the discomfort elbow and image elbow was 0. 93 with single data pair for each subject. Analysis of sensation characteristics showed significant differences between itching and burning for both intensity and time (p = 0. 03 and p = 0. 02 respectively). Conclusions: Simultaneous recording of ocular surface appearance, discomfort intensity and attributes of sensation provide novel information about the development of discomfort during ocular surface drying. The rapid increase in discomfort proceeding blinking has been quantified and the relationship between the time course of drying and discomfort is elucidated.

Lin, Andrew. "Patient-specific thoracic endovascular aoratic repair (TEVAR)." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31136.

Full text
Abstract:
Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive procedure to treat aortic aneurysms. Current off-the-shelf devices may not fit the patient perfectly, potentially increasing the chance of post-operative complications. This project aims to provide proof of concept for rapidly creating inexpensive patient-specific EVAR stent-grafts, conforming to the unique anatomy of the patient. After investigating the range of electrospinning shape capabilities on idealised stent-graft geometries (straight, tapered, elliptical, and curved), CT scans was used to create blood and aortic models of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The former was used to design a patientspecific stent-graft geometry, 3D print a conductive electrospinning mandrel, and electrospin (290 mm, +18 kV, -3 kV, 5 ml/hr, 5 mm/s, 750 rpm) Polyurethane (PU). Sinusoidal Nitinol reinforcement segments were subsequently incorporated into the graft. Various geometries were successfully spun. Electrospun PU scaffolds had a mean ultimate tensile strength of 7.3 MPa, mean Young’s Modulus of 1.9 MPa, and a mean maximum strain of 571%. Fibre morphology analysis showed a mean orientation index of 0.25 (750 rpm) and 0.35 (1000 rpm), mean fibre diameter of 2.3 µm, and a mean pore size of 7.5 µm; pore size indicates possibility of endothelialisation. Nitinol reinforced patient-specific graft was successfully made and stent-grafts of various stent patterns had radial forces between 1.3 to 5.8 N (comparable to 2.8 N from a commercial example). FEA simulation highlighted various advantages of customised stent-grafts that conform to the anatomy over standard cylindrical devices such as better seal and contact traction. Simulation results (25 mm Ø, cylindrical, electrospun stent-graft) showed close approximations to experimental results; its use for future stent-graft design optimisations is promising. Mock insertion of an electrospun patient-specific stent-graft was performed in a 3D-printed transparent-PLA hollow aortic model with good conformity, albeit subpar visibility without a backlight and inflexibility. Although further improvements can be made to the individual steps, proof of principle was achieved. This process is very promising for the manufacturing of patient-specific devices that could offer better long term outcomes.

Primeau, Brian Christopher. "INTERFEROMETRIC CHARACTERIZATION OF TEAR FILM DYNAMICS." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/202971.

Abstract:
The anterior refracting surface of the eye is the thin tear film that forms on the surface of the cornea. When a contact lens is on worn, the tear film covers the contact lens as it would a bare cornea, and is affected by the contact lens material properties. Tear film irregularity can cause both discomfort and vision quality degradation. Under normal conditions, the tear film is less than 10 microns thick and the thickness and topography change in the time between blinks. In order to both better understand the tear film, and to characterize how contact lenses affect tear film behavior, two interferometers were designed and built to separately measure tear film behavior in vitro and in vivo. An in vitro method of characterizing dynamic fluid layers applied to contact lenses mounted on mechanical substrates has been developed using a phase-shifting Twyman- Green interferometer. This interferometer continuously measures light reflected from the surface of the fluid layer, allowing precision analysis of the dynamic fluid layer. Movies showing this fluid layer behavior can be generated. The fluid behavior on the contact lens surface is measured, allowing quantitative analysis beyond what typical contact angle or visual inspection methods provide. The in vivo interferometer is a similar system, with additional modules included to provide capability for human testing. This tear film measurement allows analysis beyond capabilities of typical fluorescein visual inspection or videokeratometry and provides better sensitivity and resolution than shearing interferometry methods. The in vitro interferometer system has measured the formation and break up of fluid layers. Different fluid and contact lens material combinations have been used, and significant fluid layer properties have been observed in some cases. This dissertation discusses the design of this interferometer along with analysis methods used. Example measurement results of different contact lens are presented highlighting the capabilities of the instrument. This dissertation also provides the in vivo interferometer design, along with the considerations that must be taken when designing an interferometer for on-eye diagnostics. Discussions include accommodating eye movement, design of null optics for a range of ocular geometries, and laser emission limits for on-eye interferometry in general.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to enable collection and examination of the infant tear film. Therefore a new collection method was developed and applied. Different absorbent materials were tested for the best extraction quality and a suitable material selected for sample storage, sterilisation and for protein analysis. Cellulose rods were the ideal choice and were compared to glass capillary tubes, which are the standard collection method for adult tears. In adults, tear collection with cellulose rods was efficient and no difference in the mean total and major protein concentrations was found (Bradford test and gel electrophoresis). Safety of the technique was assessed by measuring the serum albumin concentration in the tears. Samples did not show damage to the ocular surface by serum leakage. When applied to premature and full-term infants, the cellulose rod successfully collected samples and was a suitable and sensitive technique for measuring the protein content and concentration for total and major protein assays. It was shown that sample volume sizes increased with post- conceptional age. In contrast to adult tears, no relationship between tear volume and protein analysis was found. However, similar to adult tear proteins a relationship with closed and open eye tears was found. In addition, tear ferning showed mainly grades that indicate a healthy tear film. In a pilot study, the cellulose rod was applied to a small number of paediatric contact lens wearers. Tear collection, transport from the clinical location to the laboratory and analysis of tear samples were successfully carried out. Higher numbers of subjects are necessary for conclusive data analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis came from the desire to tell my experience as an Education of Young and Adults teacher, how I lived it, what i learned and what I still want to discover. To that end, I have researched and heard the testimonies od the teachers, thinking about their daily work, their subjectivities and their relationships with school contents and with the knowledge of the students, looking to identify emancipatory practices in their daily educational processes. The students' voices also become audible, through the narrative of their experiences, which allows us to identify emancipatory activities in the midst of their learning processes. The narratives of both students and teachers connect weaving a web of daily memory, highlighted by Nilda Alves (2008) for being a non-linear narrative susceptible to various interruptions and introductions od other parallel stories. This way, I tried to make an intersection between narratives of teachers and students, looking to weave a web based on the narrative of life and the literarization of science.

The experiments were conducted at the Laboratory of Forest Pathology - FCA/UNESP/Botucatu and also at the experimental farm of UNESP in São Manoel/SP. As results for the fruit test, we obtained: Provenance Alta Floresta/MT, 13.33% of Aspergillus sp.; 3.33% of Colletotrichum sp. and Alternaria sp.; 1.66% of Septoria sp. and Penicillium sp.. For fruits from Cáceres/MT, 61.66% for the pathogen Fusarium sp., 8.33% with Penicillium sp., 1.66% with Arthrosporium sp. and Cunninghamella sp. The control under controlled conditions with fungus Olivea tectonae was carried out by spraying a suspension of spores in a concentration of 2,42 x 105 uredynopores/ml-1. It was observed that the latent period was 5 days and in the severity analysis clone S0 presented a number of 59,4 pustules/3cm², S1 with 86,6 and S3 with 88.1 pustules/3cm². The inoculation of fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Ceratocystis fimbriata was made with the introduction of a mycelial culture disc into an opening made in the plant stem at 10 cm from the colon. With the inoculation of F. oxysporum the average results of the lesions found in the stem were: S0 with 8,25 cm, S1 with 8,77 cm and S3 with 11,25 cm of lesion. With the inoculation of C. fimbriata, the mean of the lesions were as follows: S0 with 13,2 cm, S1 with 15,3 cm and S3 with 14,8 cm of lesion. There was no statistical difference between the clones tested. For the elaboration of the diagrammatic scale, 7 levels of severity were determined as a function of the sample distribution for the adult leaves (N0 = 0%, N1 = 2,5%, N2 = 5%, N3 = 10%, N4 = 20%, N5 = 40% and N6 = 80%). With the adoption of the proposed scale, all the evaluators presented better accuracy, with R² = 0,93 compared to the result obtained without the use of the scale (R² = 0,88). Field planting occurred with the introduction of 4.274 teak seedlings, divided into 3 distinct clones (S0, S1 and S3). Fungal diseases with natural occurrence, rust and cancer, caused respectively by fungi: O. tectonae and Neofusiccocum parvum. There was no statistical difference between the clones for any of the evaluated pathogens. It was concluded that, under the conditions in which the experiment was installed, the clones tested did not show horizontal resistance to the diseases described above.

Disney, Julia L. "Tear lacritin concentrations in canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/86440.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a chronic ocular disease of both dogs and humans that can result in ocular discomfort, corneal opacification, and vision loss. Lacritin, a protein found in the tears of many species, has been shown to play a role in lacrimation and corneal health. Because of its role as a potential lacrimostimulant, assessment of endogenous lacritin levels could reveal a correlation between lacritin and tear production in the dog. Objectives: To determine if tear lacritin concentrations are decreased in canine eyes affected by KCS. Animals: 58 client-owned dogs (tear samples from 55 eyes with normal tear production and 55 eyes diagnosed with KCS). Methods: All eyes underwent an ophthalmic exam, including Schirmer Tear Testing (STT), anterior segment assessment, and tear sample collection. Tear samples were evaluated for their total protein concentrations via BCA assay and lacritin concentrations via ELISA. Results: Total protein of canine tears is increased in KCS-affected eyes as compared to normal eyes. Tear lacritin as a component of total tear protein is significantly decreased in tears from KCS-affected eyes. When measured as a concentration (mass per volume of aqueous tears), lacritin is not significantly different between KCS-affected eyes and normal eyes, nor were they strongly correlated to STT values. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Total tear protein levels were significantly increased in canine KCS. When quantified as a proportion of total tear sample protein, tear lacritin levels are decreased in KCS-affected eyes. Relative to tear volume, tear lacritin levels are not significantly different between KCS-affected eyes and normal eyes. Assessment of lacritin supplementation in canine KCS is warranted to evaluate potential effects on lacrimation and ocular surface health.

Peach, Helena C. "The tear film and contact lens wear." Thesis, Aston University, 2003. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/9651/.

Full text
Abstract:
Contact lenses have become a popular method of vision correction for millions of people globally. As with all devices designed for use within the body, interactions occur between the implanted material and the surrounding biological fluid. A common complaint of lens wearers is that they often experience symptoms of dry eye whilst wearing lenses. This sensation is often heightened towards the end of the day. Through the course of this study, various analytical techniques have been utilised including one dimensional electrophoresis and Western Blotting to study the protein profiles of tear samples. By studying the tears of non-contact lens wearers, it was possible to analyse what could be considered normal, healthy, individuals. A clinical study was also undertaken which followed a population of individuals from the neophyte stage to one whereby they were accustomed lens wearers. Tears were monitored at regular intervals throughout the course of this study and worn contact lenses were also analysed for proteins that had been deposited both on and within the lens. Contact lenses disrupt the tear film in a physical manner by their very presence. They are also thought to cause the normal protein profile to deviate from what would be considered normal. The tear film deposits proteins and lipids onto and within the lens. The lens may therefore be depriving the tear film of certain necessary components. The ultimate aim of this thesis was to discover how, and to what extent, lenses affected tear proteins and if there were any proteins in the tear fluid that had the potential to be used as biochemical markers. Should this be achievable it may be possible to identify those individuals who were more likely to become intolerant lens wearers. This study followed the changes taking place to the tear film as an effect of wearing contact lenses. Twenty-eight patients wore two different types of silicone hydrogel lenses in both a daily wear and a continuous wear regime. The tear protein profiles of the lens-wearers were compared with a control group of non-lens wearing individuals. The considerable amount of data that was generated enabled the clearly observable changes to the four main tear proteins to be monitored.

Abstract:
The design and synthesis of biomaterials covers a growing number of biomedical applications. The use of biomaterials in biological environment is associated with a number of problems, the most important of which is biocompatabUity. If the implanted biomaterial is not compatible with the environment, it will be rejected by the biological site. This may be manifested in many ways depending on the environment in which it is used. Adsorption of proteins takes place almost instantaneously when a biomaterial comes into contact with most biological fluids. The eye is a unique body site for the study of protein interactions with biomaterials, because of its ease of access and deceptive complexity of the tears. The use of contact lenses for either vision correction and cosmetic reasons or as a route for the controlled drug delivery, has significantly increased in recent years. It is relatively easy to introduce a contact lens Into the tear fluid and remove after a few minutes without surgery or trauma to the patient. A range of analytical techniques were used and developed to measure the proteins absorbed to some existing commercial contact lens materials and also to novel hydrogels synthesised within the research group. Analysis of the identity and quantity of proteins absorbed to biomaterials revealed the importance of many factors on the absorption process. The effect of biomaterial structure, protein nature in terms of size. shape and charge and pH of the environment on the absorption process were examined in order to determine the relative up-take of tear proteins. This study showed that both lysozyme and lactoferrin penetrate the lens matrix of ionic materials. Measurement of the mobility and activity of the protein deposited into the surface and within the matrix of ionic lens materials demonstrated that the mobility is pH dependent and, within the experimental errors, the biological activity of lysozyme remained unchanged after adsorption and desorption. The study on the effect of different monomers copolymerised with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on the protein up-take showed that monomers producing a positive charge on the copolymer can reduce the spoilation with lysozyme. The studies were extended to real cases in order to compare the patient dependent factors. The in-vivo studies showed that the spoilation is patient dependent as well as other factors. Studies on the extrinsic factors such as dye used in colour lenses showed that the addition of colourant affects protein absorption and, in one case, its effect is beneficial to the wearer as it reduces the quantity of the protein absorbed.

This dissertation has the objective of interpreting telematic art out of theories from modern physics, which are exposed through metaphors found in scientific publication literature. Those theories are presented in parallel to the analysis of telematic artworks such as Diametral project, which I created in 2011, among works from Mobile Image, Mit Mitropoulos, Dan Graham, Paul Sermon, and others. Many physicists point to the black holes probable attribute of connecting distant points in the universe, such as the telecommunication machines, which we call black boxes. Quantum Physics and Cosmology describes the universe and its constituent parts, which the physicist Brian Greene (2005) designate as the fabric of the cosmos, a kind of quantum foam, in which the reality is determined by the relations between the parts, which have no meaning in isolation. Amongst the affinities between telematic art and modern physics there are the relations between space and time, energy and matter, information and entropy, velocity and the active roll of the "observer" in the experience. The contextual art, which the telematic art is part of, in its turn deals with the sewing of live realities. We conclude that modern science, in its pursuit in describing reality moves away from everyday experience in such a way that it accomplishes the double function of poethics and instrumentation.

Patterson, Benjamin Oliver. "Improving the safety and utility of thoracic endovascular aortic repair." Thesis, St George's, University of London, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.675932.

Abstract:
Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is now the treatment of choice for most diseases of the thoracic aorta. Current evidence and guidelines for practice are based on pooled analysis of data that are of variable quality. Questions remain about the applicability of TEVAR to different pathologies, peri-procedural neurological complications, the subsequent durability of the procedure and mid-term survival of patients. Methods and Results A systematic review of the literature was performed to describe the incidence of peri-operative and mid-term adverse events following TEVAR. For the main investigation, data from five phase IV trials was combined with that from St George's Vascular Institute to form a composite dataset of 1010 patients that underwent TEVAR from 2002-2010. A high rate of mid-term all cause mortality was observed in patients treated for thoracic aortic aneurysm, with less than 60% of those treated living beyond 5 years. Factors predicting neurological complications were determined using logistic regression modelling. Coverage of the left subclavian artery was the most important predictor of post-operative stroke, specifically in posterior vascular territories. Patients undergoing elective repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms were stratified into those at high, intermediate and low risk of a death wi!hin five years using regression models based on pre-operative factors. Those at high and low risk of aortic re-intervention were similarly identified. The models were validated externally using a dataset obtained from the United States. Conclusions Post-operative outcomes following TEVAR are partly dependent on presenting pathology, especially with regards to mid-term all-cause death. Coverage of the left subclavian artery is one of the few potentailly modifiable risk factors for stroke. Patients can risk-stratified according to the risk of midterm all cause death following TEVAR, and careful consideration should be given before treating patients who may not benefit in terms of overall life expectency.

Abstract:
New techniques are proven in this thesis which allow the visual examination of the tear film on the cornea and on different types of contact lenses. The techniques are as follows: 1. A high magnification technique of photography using the biomicroscope and crossed polarised light, allows the measurement of tear film layer thicknesses and on the surface of rigid contact lenses and 'in vivo receding contact angle'. 2. A low magnification technique of photography allows the recording and the analysis of the superficial layers of the tear film over a wide area of the eye and contact lens surface. 3. A clinical instrument has been designed for the routine clinical observation of the tear film. It permits the visual measurement of the tear film break-up time (BUT) without the use of fluorescein. 4. A unique technique of in-vivo photography of the mucous coverage of the corneal epithelial surface and contact lens surfaces is presented. Such techniques improve the understanding of surface wettability problems. As a result of this work the appearance of the normal lipid layer of the pre-ocular tear film has been classified into seven grades within a thickness range of 0.02μm to 0.58μm. As we well as the normal, two examples of abnormal lipid layers are described. The manner by which Meibomian gland secretion occurs and performs its role in the tear film is illustrated and analysed. Forced gland secretion by pressure induced localised lipid thickness increase. Eyelid closure was seen to compress the lipid film and instillation of saline broke up the lipid film. It can be seen that the pre-soft lens tear film usually possesses a thin superficial lipid layer and an aqueous phase of limited dimensions. On the other hand the pre-PMMA rigid contact lens tear film rarely possesses a visible superficial lipid layer and its aqueous layer measured 1.5μm on average. The addition of the 'wetting' solution acts on the thickness of the aqueous phase which increases to 2.5μm and supports a minimal lipid layer. The use of contact lens materials of better wettability permits the formation of films of increased thickness (up to 5.5μm) with a visible superficial lipid layer which was seen to stabilise the film and retard its drying. The main differences in mucous coverage are described as follows. At the level of the basal layer of the tear film the mucous coverage takes a continuous undulated form on the corneal epithelium but a discontinuous sporadic distribution on soft lenses decreasing to sporadic occurrence on rigid lenses. Finally, because of the acquisition of the quantitative results, new infra-structures of the pre-lens tear film for soft and rigid lenses are proposed.

Abstract:
Information regarding the performance of tests used to assess the tear film is currently incomplete. This hinders the interpretation of their results, and so obstructs the management of patients with disorders of the tear film. This work determined the repeatability and identified confounding variables of methods that assess tear breakup time and tear meniscus height. It was found that the reproducibility of both these tests were poor when considered over the range of values encountered in clinical practice; however, the situation was improved for lower values. Furthermore, results indicated that the volume of Fluorescein solution instilled prior to the assessment of tear break-up time and the delay after a blink when assessing tear meniscus height should be standardized. Additionally, a new instrument to grade the severity of symptoms of ocular surface irritation was developed and psychometrically tested. This has advantages over its predecessors because it derives measures on a linear interval scale and more satisfactorily accounts for missing data. It is envisaged that this instrument will be used in future clinical trials, and will improve the power of inferences made from their data. Finally, the effectiveness of eyedrops containing Sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of moderate dry eye was investigated. A pharmacokinetic analysis established that their beneficial effects on the tear film last several hours, and a follow-up study found that they reduce symptoms and improve ocular surface health when used for a month

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the analysis of phospholipids in the tear film and with the synthesis of phospholipids analogous to hydrogels. The work consists of two areas. The first area is the study of the phospholipids in the tear film, their nature and fate. The use of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry determined that the concentration of phospholipids in the tear film was less than previously thought. Thin layer chromatography showed the presence of diacylglycerides (DAGs) in the tear film at relatively high concentrations. The activity of an enzyme, phospholipase C, was found in the tear film. It was hypothesised that the low concentration of phospholipids and high concentrations of DAG in the tear film was due to the action of this enzyme. The second area of study was the synthesis of phospholipids analogous materials for use in ocular and dermal applications. For ocular applications the synthesis involved the use of the monomer N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-acryloylethyl)-N-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium betaine (SPDA) in combination with 2-hdyroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Charge-balanced membranes were also synthesised using potentially anionic monomers in conjunction with cationic monomers in stoichiometrically equivalent ratios also with HEMA as a commoner. Membranes of SPDA copolymers and charge-balanced copolymers proved to have some properties suitable for ocular applications. The dermal materials consisted of one family of partially hydrated hydrogels synthesised from SPDA in combination with ionic monomers: sodium 2-(acrylamido)-2-methyl propane sulfonate and acrylic acid-bis(3-sulfopropyl)-ester, potassium salt. A second family of partially hydrated hydrogels was synthesised from N-vinyl pyrrolidone. Both of the partially hydrated hydrogels synthesised proved to have some properties suitable for use as adhesives for the skin.

The present research runs upon the importance of oral tradition in contemporary age, an age characterized by the loss of traditional references. It examines "rap" and "repente" as oral poetics that represent popular culture and tell the globalization effects, consequence of the current economic system. The research aimed at identifying the similarities between these two popular musical manifestations, ressignifying the action of cultural agents responsible for the continuance of such tradition, characterized by spoken singing. Under a cultural perspective, it created a dialogue with the interviewed subjects, in order to clarify both their world vision and the way they organize their social practices. By doing so, it was possible to see the elements which allow the comprehension of artistic and social representations of such groups.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the rhetoric of deficiency that frames Latina/o students as lacking with regard to education. This dissertation begins by examining the cultural deficit model entrenched in colonial narratives of history that justify unequal access to resources in the US. I argue that the reimagining of the pejorative trope of 'pocho' by reconnecting it with its etymological root pochteca provides a trope of resistance to deficiency rhetoric, and a trope that embodies rhetorical strategies for Latina/o students navigating academic institutions. Additionally, this dissertation furthers the advocacy of culturally relevant reading and writing assignments and practices, while at the same time arguing that the discursive productions responding to culturally relevant writing demonstrate rhetorical strategies. The analysis of a student publication that responds to and integrates dichos provides a site of analysis where students identify rhetorical strategies that help them navigate obstacles related to education. The use of Twitter by a predominantly Latina/o summer bridge program provides an additional site of analysis where the writing of students in digital spaces allows them to perform latinidad, and create support networks that help them succeed in school. The pedagogical chapter of this dissertation analyzes the Arizona House Bill 2281 and the rhetoric that frames the Tucson Unified School District's Mexican American Studies program as racist and anti-American; following this analysis come suggestions for incorporating culturally relevant aspects of the TUSD MAS curriculum into rhetoric and composition curriculum.

Abstract:
This body of work encompasses two studies: the collection of canine tears via a novel polyester
rod and the comparison of VEGF-A concentrations in tears from dogs with normal and
vascularized corneas. The first study used polyester rods for tear collection in dogs. Fluid volume and VEGF recovery characteristics, as well as potential binding of VEGF to the rod, were determined. Tears were harvested from normal dogs using rods and glass capillary tubes. Tears were assayed for tear film VEGF using a commercial canine VEGF sandwich ELISA kit. Dilutions of VEGF standard were wicked into the rods or drawn into capillary tubes, eluted, and assayed. Percent volume recovery is adequate for polyester rods as is percent VEGF recovery. VEGF is detectable in normal canine tears. The second study harvested tear samples from eyes of dogs with vascularizing corneal disease, as well as the contralateral unaffected eye of unilaterally diseased dogs, and normal dogs. Vascularization scores were assigned to diseased eyes and tear film VEGF concentration was assayed as above. Mean tear film VEGF concentration of diseased eyes did not differ from control eyes, and was not correlated with disease process, extent of vascularization, or other parameters. Tear film VEGF in unaffected eyes was significantly higher than control and vascularized eyes. Canine tear film VEGF exceeds biologically active concentrations, but does not correlate with state of corneal vascularization. VEGF-related control of corneal vascularization may be mediated by other proangiogenic factors.

Bandlitz, Stefan. "The role of the meniscus in the tear film." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/73390/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the diagnosis of dry eye, an evaluation of tear fluid volume is an important parameter. The tear menisci hold approximately 75-90% of the overall tear fluid volume and serve as reservoirs, supplying tears to the pre-corneal tear film. The measurement of the anterior curvature radius of the tear meniscus (TMR) is an indicator of tear film volume and when it is performed non-invasively has been found to have good dry eye diagnostic accuracies. Optical coherence tomography and meniscometry are existing techniques that can measure TMR non-invasively. These techniques have not found wide application among clinicians, either because they are not commercially available or they are too expensive. This PhD describes a series of experiments that investigated the development, evaluation and application of a new instrument for non-invasive tear meniscus measurement. From the results of these studies, it can be concluded: A Portable Digital Meniscometer (PDM) was developed. This consists of an application tool for the iPod-touch, a slit-lamp holder for the iPod-touch and an image analysis software for TMR calculation. A simple iPod-touch or an iPhone mounted on a commercially available digital slit-lamp can be used to project a grid of black and white lines on the tear meniscus. Using the principal of reflective meniscometry, the radius of the lower tear meniscus can be non-invasively measured. This newly developed instrument is a simple, mobile and useful device for measuring tear meniscus radius, and therefore tear volume, and is suitable for use by clinicians. The newly developed PDM was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. It produced accurate and reliable measurements and provided similar values for the tear meniscus radius, in human studies, to the existing video-meniscometer. PDM and OCT measurements of the TMR were significantly correlated. Since with the PDM no image calibration is needed, it seems to be a quick and non-invasive technique for evaluation of tear fluid quantity. The PDM appears to measure the radius of the central section of the tear meniscus The PDM was able to non-invasively measure alterations in TMR and TMH along the lower lid. The flatter TMR and higher TMH at the nasal and temporal locations may be caused by the LIPCOF degree of the underlying conjunctiva. To avoid any interference by LIPCOF, it is recommended that TMR and TMH be measured along the lower lid margin below the pupil centre. Furthermore, the PDM was able to usefully detect changes in TMR following the instillation of artificial tears. The difference in residence time is likely to reflect the different viscosity and Newtonian properties of these drops. An overload with a large drop may result in initial increased blink rate. Blink rate at baseline is significantly related to dry eye symptoms.

Abstract:
The thesis has been carried out as a part of the Master of Science in mechanical engineering at Karlstads University. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how different variables affect the tearing resistance in a multi-ply paperboard. The paperboard’s final quality is dependent on several different process – and recipe variables and has, in this study, been analyzed with respect to ply grammage, ply composition and refining energies. This was investigated by manufacturing of anisotropic sheets consisting of four plies and isotropic sheets consisting of single-ply sheets. The multi-ply sheets were manufactured where one variable at a time were tested at different values. The single-ply sheets were manufactured of pure pulps with the refining energy being varied. A total of nineteen unique multi-ply sheets and twelve unique single-ply sheets were manufactured. All sheets were tested with respect to the properties including tensile strength, bending stiffness, tear strength and delamination strength. The study shows that an improvement in tearing resistance is obtained when the amount of CTMP-pulp in the center plies 2 and 3 decreases simultaneously as the amount of broke-pulp and unbleached chemical pulp in the same plies increases. The consequence of this improvement is reduced thickness and thereby reduced bending stiffness. The study also shows that several pulps has an optimal degree of refining for maximizing tear strength in paperboard. The major source of error is believed to be the method of manufacturing. It is also possible that the amount of test points has been too few to be able to see any clear trends for several variables.

Abstract:
As an exposed structure, the tear film is exposed to a variety of environmental conditions that may adversely affect its ability to fulfil its function. The aim of this work is to investigate tear film parameters and the interrelationship between these parameters during exposure to adverse environmental conditions. A wide range of parameters were monitored over a range of relative humidity (RH) and ambient temperatures. Evaporation rate and ocular surface temperature (OST) increased dramatically when room temperature increased from 5 to 25°C. Also changes in lipid layer thickness (LLT) and tear film stability were seen at ambient temperatures of less than 10°C. Changes in tear physiology were also seen during exposure to 5% RH compared to 40 RH%. All tear parameters observed (except OST) were adversely affected by the exposure to a desiccating environment. Some tear film parameters observed became typical of that seen in patients with dry eye.

Embroider and weave remind us of some manual abilities and productions that, when finished, are built among those who created them. Here, it is not different because by weaving stories along these pages, I have stitched and tied memories from Dulcina de Moraes, Geraldo Martuchelli, Hugo Rodas, Humberto Pedrancini, Iara Pietricovsky, Jesus Vivas, João Antônio e José Maria B. de Paiva, developing, by the way, a shared narrative with our special touches. By studying history and culture, using the methodology of oral history researches, I have recorded narratives and studied them connected with other sources of (written and visual) images found in different collections and then, I have interpreted the theater actions in Brasília, between 1970 and 1990. Therefore, some parts of life’s history these narraters, knowledge, places that were created, repertoires putted in action, daily struggles, difficulties, ruptures, continuities, beauties and legatos were revealed upon my eyes showing me some actions played in the city, in a heterogenic, dynamic and significant relationship between past and present echoing in nowadays reality. Finally, we are in front of some multiple experiences registers in which, in so many times, are revealed with dialogs and in so many others are shown by conflicts as it is seen in the proper history. This text is by me understood with the belief that the historical object is always unfinished and, therefore, this work is opened for other suggestions and interpretations.

History is responsible for inserting man into his context, into his environment and into time. It is able to reconnect us in our complexity and make us perceive as practicing and responsible subjects for the creations of the world, an indispensable issue for human formation and survival in a time marked by gratuitous violence and fragility of ties. This analysis aims at: the construction of historical narrative as a practice of complex thought for a humanizing education. It seeks to analyze approximations and distances between history and literature, focusing on the construction of the narrative sensitive, relating to ideas of the complex thought of Edgar Morin. It understands that the uses existing in this relation can help in the development of a sensitive and humanizing education, thus contributing to an education that exercises complex thought. For this I use as reference the cultural history and the thinking of Edgar Morin to think a sensitive historical writing, inspired by literature and that is able to access our complexity. The research fits in a theoretical discussion using bibliographical sources, from academic works, magazines, theoretical books bases and literary books that come to contribute to the creation of the writing and discussions. In its methodology, we tried to construct a sensitive narrative using literature as instrument, as is the proposal launched in the research objectives. It was noticed that historical writing using the inputs provided by the literature as a key to access the human in its various parts (demens and sapiens, poetic and prosaic, etc.) is able to open doors to the practice of complexity. This narrative constructed with possibilities of rich interpretation stimulating the "ecological" thinking is able to make see the other and to perceive the constructed history, inserting the human in the nucleus of knowledge and responsibility in the historical construction, besides putting its parts, prosaic and poetic in a dance with this language full of windows. The results of this research indicate a path to the practice of complex thought in education and scientific production, because when we produce a sensitive writing that allows us to know and include the subject in the making of the world, we can also bring more than information, bring teachings to life.

The lyric production of Hilda Hilst (1930 - 2004) is marked by the use of symbolic images that amplify endlessly the possibilities of reading her poems. In her knowledge about the world, the poet discovers the cosmos that surround the time which presents her views recast by the poetic reverie. The symbols used by Hilst are expressions of a soul that made the poetry her life during the search of the color, of the link, the wire, the motion of the shuttle, the precision, the texture of the line, finally, of the exact moment of manipulation the wired-word‟. According to this, the eyes of search return to the study of images made by the author, mainly, from the universe weaver. During the investigation of the poetic figurations imagery in the Hilst‟s text, we will consider the imagination like a creative dynamism in the corpus of selected poems from the books: Júbilo, memória, noviciado da paixão and Exercícios. These productions of Hilst legacy show images of the inspired poet and the weaver poet in verses guidelines that combine the strength of the intellect and the need for expression, linked to the poet desire to make the experience of living the raw material of her poems. Thus, the analytical work of the critical myths in the Hilst‟s poems plans to mark the divine nature of human existence, because the poet is spinner, and wired-words‟ are handled under the gift of art, sometimes under the prophetic gift, or under the simultaneous combination of both, the inspiration and work. The Hilda Hilst‟s poetry, connection between prophecy and incantation, it is a mediator between the sphere of the profane and the sacred, capable of making stocks and destinations by the incantation of her corner that leads and snatch. Thus, the voice of Hilst‟s poetry, symbolic representation of the alliance of the words in the fabric of poetic images, protest as an oracle of life that, sanction the reality, can lead to the rapture of the tangent experience to the sacred and, getting to the unflagging unity between poetry and music, can promote the man catharsis in front of his simple reality.
