Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare the achievement mean test scores in Technical Drawing of students enrolled for the NCE (Technical) program at the College of Science and Technology, Kaduna polytechnic, Kaduna, Nigeria. Test score means were compared between direct and remedial (preparatory) entry students and secondly among type of high school attended. Data were collected directly from students' permanent records. Two major hypotheses with three sub-hypotheses for each were tested. The first major hypothesis compared direct and remedial entry students. The second major hypothesis compared among three types of high schools attended. The One Way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data. The Duncan Multiple Comparison Test was also applied on the second major hypothesis. Both hypotheses I and II were retained at the .05 level of significance. However, hypothesis I was rejected at the .01 level of significance because the remedial entry students were found to have higher mean test scores than the direct entry students. Findings for hypothesis II indicated no significant difference among type of high school attended. It was recommended that selection for admissions for both the remedial and direct enrollments should not be based only on type of high school attended or type of subjects taken; data collected for remediation should bear directly on individuals' academic problems; and aptitude tests should be conducted in addition to transcripts currently demanded.

Abstract:
This work analyses the teaching of architectural drawing at Brazilian schools of architecture, coming to a general picture which is not a good one, for the students do not use correctly the graphic representation of the architectural technical drawing, when creating or producing the object of architecture. Such lack of knowledge for using this basic tool, which is so necessary to the architects, endangers their professional performance. The works presents a theoretical foundation on architectural drawing; a questionary apllied to the teachers of architectural drawing and CAD; a list and analysis of manuals in use by teacher and stundents; and, eventually, interviews with architects and/or teachers. The results instigate us to reconsider our role and to review our positions, in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of the architecture and urbanism teaching and, as a consequence, to a better professional performance of the architects.

Abstract:
Early 17th-century Antwerp, despite political and religious troubles, was a thriving European art centre and home of such renowned artists as Peter Paul Rubens and other painters of his circle, like Jan Brueghel I, Frans Snyders, Anthony van Dyck and Hendrick van Balen. This interdisciplinary thesis in Technical Art History, after a general introduction to this specific art scene, looks at how specific aspects of their studio practice, such as collaborations within and outside their studios or the many copies and versions of their paintings, found manifestation in their works but also in their theoretical concepts. For this an in-depth study and examination of c.20 paintings from mainly Scottish collections (National Galleries of Scotland Edinburgh, Glasgow Museums, Hunterian Art Gallery of the University of Glasgow, Talbot Rice Gallery of the University of Edinburgh, Hopetoun House South Queensferry) was conducted, using detailed photography, multispectral imaging, tracings, dendrochronology, polarised light microscopy and SEM- EDX-analysis of paint samples in cross-sections. The technical examination and analysis, informed by art historical research, significantly aided the answering of questions regarding these paintings’ materials and techniques, as well as they helped to authenticate sometimes contested authorship and date. Four main chapters discuss Frans Snyders’ studio practice focussing on reappearing motifs, Rubens’ tronies, Jan Brueghel’s minute staffage figures in collaborative works, as well as Rubens’ and Brueghel’s painting Nature Adorned by the Graces. An own chapter critically discusses the test results of the application of Stable Lead Isotope Analysis on paint samples, which were carried out at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC).

Abstract:
The present work analyses how architecture students and former graduates have appropriated technical drawing techniques in order to carry out architectural projects. Inexpressive and poorly communicative drawings are shown as a result of deficiencies in teaching some disciplines, such as basic projective geometry, conventions and particularities of technical and architectonical drawing. This study reveals a lack of technical-constructive knowledge in civil construction. It also proves that poor mastery of this type of knowledge, so fundamental for the exercise of the architect\'s profession, compromises proper performance. We propose reflection and revision of existing paradigms, as well as some new didactic approaches to enhance the quality of the drawing teaching process in architecture and urbanism programs and, in consequence, offer better professional training to architects.

Abstract:

SCALES, ALICE YOUNG. The Effect of Learning Style, Major, and Gender on Learning Computer-aided Drawing in an Introductory Engineering/Technical Graphics Course. (Under the direction of Dewey A. Adams and Barbara M. Kirby)This correlational descriptive study examined factors that might affect students? achievement in learning computer-aided drawing and engineering/technical graphics concepts in introductory classes at North Carolina State University. The study involved 38 subjects enrolled in introductory classes that combined the teaching of computer-aided drawing and technical graphics. The three dependent variables used in the study were CAD project grade, CAD posttest score, and final course grade. The seven independent variables examined were gender, learning style, major, student classification, final exam grade, final exam with the posttest score removed, and pretest score. Subjects' learning styles were established by the Group Embedded Figures Test, which measures field-dependence and field-independence. Kendall?s Tau B correlations and multiple linear regression models were used in the analysis of the data. The alpha used for statistical significance was .05.Analysis of the data revealed that the research subjects were primarily field dependent, and exactly half of them had prior drafting experience. Subjects in the study represented 19 different majors. Eighteen students were from engineering programs and 20 from non-engineering programs. Females in the sample reported a lower level of computer experience and less prior drafting experience than males. For the total sample, statistically significant correlations were found between the project grade and the final grade with the project score removed, learning style and the final exam grade with the project score removed, computer experience and gender, and the final exam grade and gender. Correlations were found between gender and the final exam grade with the posttest score removed and between learning style and the final exam with the posttest score included. For females, a statistically significant relationship was found between prior drafting experience and the project grade; this was the strongest correlation found in the study. For males, statistically significant relationships were found between learning style and final exam grade, learning style and the final exam grade with the posttest removed, the project grade and the final grade with the project score removed, the project grade and the pretest score, and the pretest and posttest score.Three multiple linear regression models were created as part of the study, two as predictors of computer-aided drawing achievement and one as a predictor of achievement in learning the course content. Model 1 used the final project grade as its dependent variable to measure CAD achievement. The independent variables used in this model were gender, the pretest score, and major. The model?s R square was 0.31 (p = 0.005). Model 2, which used the posttest score as its dependent variable, was the second measure of CAD achievement. The independent variables used in this model were the pretest score, the Group Embedded Figures Test score, and the final exam grade with the posttest score removed. Its R square was 0.19 (p = 0.056). Model 3 used the final course grade as its dependent variable to measure achievement in learning the course content. The independent variables included in this model were gender, the Group Embedded Figures Test scores, and student classification. The R square for this model was 0.21 (p = 0.043).

Abstract:
In the present research I propose theoretical-practical reflection, confronting some aspects of the philosophy of technique, which discuss the relationship between man and his technology in different periods of history, in dialogue with central ideas of engineering and science fiction visionaries such as Jules Verne, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Nikola Tesla, Gerald Bull, Yona Friedman among others. In this context, I present the series of works entitled Engenharia Perversa as a possibility of crossing between technical drawing and multiple, establishing relations with works of other artists that use technical language, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Leon Ferrari, Regina Silveira and Marcel Duchamp. As a basis for the dialectical construction established in this thesis, I point out cases where science fiction precedes the progress that will be achieved by engineering and architecture. In the opposite sense, this thesis tries to investigate occurrences in which unconstructed engineering projects, when they become only unproven ideas, point to the technical drawing as a source of fictional productions. From these premises, this research problematizes the present artistic production in relation to the fictional field, investigating possibilities of simulacra established by the use of obsolete technologies for the production of images.

Abstract:
The present dissertation discusses the building-work drawing, addressed as a means of approaching the production process of design and the building-works, as well as the relations established between them. The building-work drawing is proposed as the research object, especially because it represents the mediation between moments and instances of conception and of construction in the production of space, and constitutes the result of the process of design that guides the construction in the building site. The use of building-work drawing was studied along history, starting from theoretical approaches that situate it as technical instrument in the mode of production. It aimed at understanding the processes that engendered the separation between distinct instances of conception and of construction in the production of architecture, determined by an increasing division of labor. These theoretical and historical approaches support the questions that guided the observation of the labor activities and the conversations with the agents of projects and works in four specific situations of residential building sites in São Paulo. The analysis of these cases seeks to understand the reciprocal determinations between the production process of the design and the building-work, and its implications for the building-work drawing and the production of architecture.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the history of art education in Sydney from 1850 to 1915. This was a foundational period for the establishment of both art and education in Sydney. It was a time during which structures of schooling first emerged, technical instruction became a priority and a government supported art gallery was established. I draw on a wide range of English and Australian sources to consider what comprised art education in Sydney during this foundational period. It is a topic that has received little scholarly attention, but is important for allowing those currently involved in art education an understanding of the foundations on which our current system was built. This thesis focuses on four key research questions. The first, ‘why teach art?’ is examined through analysis of discourse surrounding art education in this period. Three major motivations that informed the provision of art education in Sydney are identified: the importance of art for industry, a desire to teach taste and the broader educational benefit of art instruction for improving hand-eye coordination. ‘Where was art taught?’ is a second major focus. The art instruction offered through schools, technical colleges, exhibitions and galleries is examined in order to map the landscape of art education in Sydney. This thesis offers a novel contribution through the creation of a chronology, tracing the development of art instruction across a range of educational institutions. Thirdly, ‘who taught art?’ is considered through a series of professional biographies, featuring a range of individuals involved in the provision of art education. These case studies show the way one person could influence instruction across a range of institutions. Analysis of periodicals, personal papers, educational magazines, government records and school archives is undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of the contribution of these individuals. Finally, the question of ‘how art was taught’ is considered through close analysis of the tools used in teaching. Plaster casts and copybooks are examined, both for their pedagogic value and as artistic objects in themselves and how they were used to disseminate visual culture in Sydney.

Full text
Abstract:
The narrative outline of a practice is sometimes sketched by the presence of a simple letter, like a humble dot can reveal the existence of a line. The "e" appears again in the drawing, adorns it with a multiplicity of meanings, giving it the weight never acquired of an autonomous sketch. (There is distinction in French language between the words "dessein" and "dessin" which one I play). At a time of heightened technical reproducibility and through a phenomenon - drawing the Light - the ambition and its tradition question themselves. The Drawing, on a sinuous path, crosses some excessive borders/frontiers, announcing his "transversality". The movement immanent to the material used and the hybridization as an intrinsic concept of the actual creative process, always at the service of the graphic element, will push the Drawing in many directions within and across disciplines - inviting origins, ideas, technical concepts and processes - but also physical. The light produced by the graphic experience, movements between visible and invisible, can be found not only in the sign but also in the photographic index and questions our perception. The research forn brightness and contrast in shades, often with black and white tons, gives an infinite range of potential variations to the creative/esthetic space/arena. This exhaustive potential is threatened by the ultimate act of creativity : the choice, shaping the spatial dispositions of light into multiple graphic compositions.Despite certain technical processes and their evolution, play, phantasy and light phenomenon' poetics protecting the Drawing' secret : an intimate characteristic in which onirism, as a wayto resist, appears. Working with light today - in a secret of a blind act, blinded, blinding - questions the Authenticity as a concept, creating an uneasy relationship to the aura, always between appearance and disappearance facing its previously announced loss

Abstract:
In this research, I propose works that consist of hybrid designs for men and machines, using technical drawing and figure the posthuman as support for reflection, Indulging in metaphor the relationships between humans and their technology, and replacing part of everyday experiences when using machine. These are digital images and linoleum engraving which feature dialogues and tensions between craft and technology, as well as between the human figure and the figure mechanics. The basement is established by the theoretical literature from definitions of technical philosophy of Gilbert Simondon in dialogue with notes of Edmund Couchot and Flusser. Notes on the cyborg are discussed from Haraway, Santaella and Novaes. Hoelscher, Springer, Dobrovolny and Belofsky contribute with historical references and definitions of the technical drawing in dialogue with observations made in patent registers. Are still considered works of artists such as Stelarc, Albrecht Dürer, Da Vinci, Regina Silveira and Rubem Grilo as poetic references that establish dialogue with this plastic production. Try, thereby establishing propositions within the field of printmaking, technical drawing and hybrid languages, contributing to enlarge the construction of knowledge in the field of visual arts.

Abstract:
Deep drawn shapes with orthogonal wall components are usually evaluated by shape accuracy and visual quality. There have been only a few investigations on the stability of such structures; however, the effect of the wrinkles on the stability of the wall is important for packaging applications and can support the shape accuracy. This paper focuses on the influences of process parameters on the stability of orthogonal walls of shapes produced by deep drawing with rigid tools and immediate compression. The wall stability was evaluated by tensile testing orthogonal to the direction of the wrinkles. The stability distribution was characterized with regard to the drawing height, and a comparison was made between the two different materials. The wall stability decreased with increases in the forming height. Furthermore, a blank holder force design and z-directional compression level improved the wall stability. Together with an elevated moisture content of the material and thermal energy supply that delivered two to three times higher resistance against wrinkle extension, these effects drastically improved the wall stability.

This research aims to analyze the practice of teaching of technical design, integrating traditional and digital tools, starting from experiments in an integrated environment for higher education. This environment, called Integrated Environmental Education Technical Drawing (AIEDT), was developed to integrate traditional practices with digital tools in an applied discipline of Interior Design Technology Degree in Interior Design (CSTDI) of Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Paraiba (IFPB). At specific level, aims to place the picture of traditional technical drawing, technical drawing to describe the digital artifacts; show the integration of different learning environments, mapping the process of teaching technical drawing at the daily practice of teachers and students. Questioned in this work which mainly changes that may occur when using traditional technical drawing (DTT) integrated with computer aided design (CAD) requiring adaptations to their teacher's way of teaching. The hypothesis is that the teaching of DTT and CAD, embedded in a social interaction environment, provide better education and consequently the learning of graphic expression in a college course. The analytical perspective is the cultural-historical Vygotysky Lev Semenovich, where he addressed the concepts of instrumental and symbolic mediation, and social interaction in the teaching and learning. The methodological procedures were based through archival research and field research through direct observation of the practices not participating in a class of 4th period CSTDI. The instruments for data collection were interviews with teachers of subjects related to technical design, aiming to describe teaching practices and perceptions of their current teaching model; the questionnaire with students in order to verify these teaching practices; literature in books, theses, dissertations, papers and documents, in order to describe the phenomenon, its practices and tools. Our results show that the points analyzed were satisfactory in improving the teaching process.

Abstract:
Spatial visualization is the ability of an individual to visualize an object mentally and understand its spatial orientation. It plays an important role in engineering. There have been multiple works that show that spatial visualization skills can be improved with the right training. Creating technical drawings requires mental manipulation and visual thinking. Strong spatial visualization abilities are required for such a mental process. To train students in this process and to improve their spatial skills, Professor Diana Bairaktarova conducted a class in spatial visualization for freshmen in engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The class consisted of 169 students from different engineering disciplines. One of the major pedagogical techniques used in the class was to give students three assignments on drawing sectional views of mechanical objects with a pre-defined cutting plane. All three assignments had the same six mechanical objects to assess their improvement through the class. Students were not given feedback after completion of each assignment. They were asked to do the first assignment at the beginning of the course, the second assignment during the middle of the semester and the final assignment towards the end of the semester. The students were given instructions on how to draw the 2D sectional views. The assignments were then graded by the teaching assistants for the class and the improvement of the students through the semester was recorded. Assignments were graded manually by two different raters using a pre-defined grading rubric. An inter-rater reliability was established between the graders. There were drawbacks to this process. It was extremely time consuming since there were more than 500 assignments to be graded by the teaching assistants. Also, to establish inter-rater reliability, the assignments had to be graded twice. The process would have been more efficient if there was a software that could automate the grading process. Also, this would eliminate the need to establish an inter-rater reliability. This research aims at developing a software for automatic grading of the technical drawings. The software gives students' feedback on the drawings describing their mistakes. This would give a more complete learning experience as the students would get a better understanding of the internal details of the object with the help of the feedback they are getting. In addition, the software is independent of the CAD platform used to create the drawings. The instructor can also upload a batch of images that can be processed by the software at once. The grading rubric that was used for manual grading can be implemented in the software. The software uses Image processing and Computer Vision toolboxes in MATLAB which enables the comparison between the submitted technical drawing and the source (solution) drawing. The software is currently developed for simple geometries with less complicated features as it is being employed in a course where students are new to CAD environment. Students can also use this software as an interactive learning tool as they create 3D models and sectional views of mechanical objects. The proposed software reduces the amount of effort put in by faculty on grading the assignments. It also gives students feedback on the drawings, making it an interactive tool which improves the learning experience. This software can be a powerful pedagogical tool to improve spatial visualization skills.

Abstract:
Airbrush painting is an art like any other, requiring talent and skill. But it is also a technology that, more than ather art forms, calls for technical mastery of equipment used in the process. Every day airbrush artists develop new groundbreaking airbrushing techniques as they refine and experiment with their medium and pass along their knowledge by practice work. As in Lithuania it is common practice – airbrushing is mostly used on cars and motorcycles or helmets. But in my opinion, airbrushing technology has unlimited possibilities, because it’s good to use on various surfaces. Airbrush technique is the freehand manipulation of the airbrush, medium, air pressure and distance from the surface being sprayed in order to produce a certain predictable result on a consistent basis with or without shields or stencils. Creating the cycle of artworks, named “Retrocar”, for the “Havana” night club, I found one of the way to use airbrushihg technology in the interior. And by doing the theoretical part of the work, I’d explained how does the technology works.

Drawing sketches is certainly one of the most important but at the same time elaborate parts of archaeological work. Currently, 3D scanning technology is affording a number of new applications, and only one of them is using virtual copies instead of the originals as the basis for documentation. Our major contribution are methods for automatically generating stylized images from 3D models. These are not only intuitive and easy to read but also more objective and accurate than traditional drawings. Besides some other useful tools we show several examples from our daily work proving that the system accelerates the whole documentation process considerably.

Abstract:
For many companies, design related information mainly exists as rooms of paper-based archives, typically in the form of manufacturing drawings and technical specifications. This 'static' information cannot be easily reused. The work presented in this thesis proposes a methodology to ease this problem. It defines and implements a computer-based design tool that will enable existing design families to be transformed into 'dynamic' CAD-based models for the Conceptual, Embodiment and Detailed stages of the design process. Two novel concepts are proposed here, i) the use of a Function Means Tree to store Conceptual and Embodiment design and ii) a Variant Method to represent Detailed design. In this way a definite link between the more abstract conceptual and the concrete detailed design stages is realised by linking individual detailed designs to means in the Function Means Tree. The use of the Variant Method, incorporating 'state-of-the-art' developments in Solid Modelling, Feature-Based Design and Parametric Design, allows an entire family of designs to be represented by a single Master Model. Therefore, instances of this Master Model need only be stored as a set of design parameters. This enables current design families and new design cases to be more created more efficiently. Industrial Case Studies, including a Lathe Chuck family, a Drive-End casting and a family of Filtration Systems are given to prove the methodology.

Abstract: The objective of this work is optimize the phases of product development, reduce the main time and the cost involved in itself. Like the development is a wide activity, that can be divided in five basic phases: planning, development of project, development of process, manufacturing, continued increase. Emphasized only in project phase, to increase the specific process of distribution of product drawing made by Engineering, and itself is utilized in many departments of the several units the same company. The challenge was create a computer system to distribution of drawing product, itself can be made in four different CAD systems as according as availability the system and which interface were necessary to attend the customer. After made the new system of drawing distribution, compared with a conventional methodology applied nowadays, which was based in paper copy and distribution by internal mail, showing the profit and the possible inconvenience that could happen. The results show like this new methodology to distribution of electronic drawing lows the cost with the copy drawing, time of the information circulate, and the facility to access electronic drawings

Triyono, Moch Bruri, Thomas Köhler, and Lilis Trianingsih. "Technical working skills of vocational high school students at the interface between digital workplaces and school. An empirical study about construction engineering drawings in Indonesia." TUDpress, 2018. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A33835.

Abstract:
Recent studies report about the need for and difficulties in measuring technical working skills among vocational high school students worldwide (Mabed & Köhler, 2018). Often the discussion is linked to the question of skills versus competencies, not only in the context of new digitized forms of measurement. Furthermore, a growing number of completely new or updated measurement procedures is about to reach the TVET sector in the context of the digitization of TEL (Köhler & Drummer, 2018; Hariyanto & Köhler, 2017). This study aimed at investigating the differences of the technical skills of vocational high school students majoring in construction drawings engineering in industrial working practices. As an empirical approach for their evaluation study authors used a discrepancy evaluation model. The population of this study consisted of 195 students in Yogyakarta and Sleman, Indonesia. A proportional random sampling was used to select 124 students from the population with both, the industrial work and the students becoming the sources of the information. The data analysis process was done using descriptive analysis and Wilcoxon matched pairs test analysis to describe and find the gap/discrepancy of students’ technical skills based on the predetermined standard. The results of the study show that the technical skills of vocational high school students in their industrial working practices are categorized as good with a low discrepancy based on the industrial assessment, and even better based on the students’ self-assessment. Yet there is a significant difference of technical skills among the vocational high school students in their industrial working practices based on the industrial work and students’ assessment with a significant value of 0.000 < 0,05.
